Everywhere at the End of Pop 5

Pop is the fourth album by Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, released on 28 March 2000 on Mille Plateaux. At the time of its release, reviews noted 'a striking left turn' in the sound, compared to other Gas releases; the album sounds considerably crisper, with a less muffled kickdrum and less of the 'underwater' quality present on other releases under the name. Pop is the only Gas album to be released identically on vinyl and compact disc. The third song would appear in an extended format in Gas' second box set, Box. Pop was named the sixth best album of the 2000s by Resident Advisor and the 85th best of the decade by online magazine Pitchfork. In 2016, Pitchfork ranked it the 11th best ambient album of all time.
Everywhere at the End of Pop 5
I would say ambient electronic music is underrepresented on the list and underrated in general. This is a shining example. Intriguing balance of synthetic and organic. The texture and atmosphere envelops you. If I were to take acid again, this is the kind of thing I'd like to have on.
I like this kind of ambient relaxation music. Use it a bit when I'm in the zone at work and death metal would be too intrusive. 4/5.
like taking a warm sonic bath
It's alright I guess as something to have on while you're doing other things, but not very interesting to me. 3 stars.
If I was dropping acid in a German forest I'm sure I would be vibing outrageously with this. Listen: minimalist art is always challenging and there are things in the visual realm anyway I feel like I developed a real regard for and pleasure in by educating myself about their deeper context. So I'm open to the possibility that there's more to this. But my experience of it was of a (admittedly, not unpleasantly) abstract monotony that quickly receded into the background of whatever I was doing.
Ambient music, in it's nature, seems difficult to talk about. It's supposed to fill the background and not made to be focused on, correct? If that's the measure, it's good. Light, airy synths breathe over very, very light pulsing kick drums. I find it difficult to discuss further, since that's my entire impression of the project. It did it's job. Favorite track: "Pop 4"
Unexpected...I thought it was going to be electronic music and I came across some "induction" type sounds like those that abound on YouTube, for relaxation purposes or other things I wouldn't have thought of. I didn't like it either as a lounge or to pass the time because the "trance" lasts too long, it's not for me.
This is just lofo electronic music. Hardly even music if you ask me but some people apparently love it. To each their own I suppose but this was background music for background music. This could be in for 8 hours and I probably wouldn’t notice. 1.9/10
This was an interesting addition. Like Brian Eno’s Music for Airports, I can think of a lot of great situations where some ambient music like this would be just the ticket. I kind of loved this for the background, which is likely the point? Terrific!
Being a lover of minimalistic, ambient music, it's a shame I had not paid attention to this album in 2000. There's sure was a thing happening in that particular field at the turn of the century, between GAS, the first albums of Tim Hecker, and William Basinski's Disintegration Loops series. *Pop* sounds repetitive at first but then this foray into darkly poetic woods easily reveals its sonic subtleties -- more a matter of (shadow) frequencies than proper music, admittedly, but the effect was undeniable on me. The two cuts where the bass kick... kicked in surely became exhilarating, especially for the breathless closer. Many thanks to whoever in this group took me to those memorable woods. Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Pop 7
Reading and working music done well. If I meditated, I think I'd like to meditate to this
Inspiring ambient album. Never heard of it before, but it's now one of my favorites in the genre.
Not that I listened to loads of ambient music but this is up there with the best Iv heard, one to keep in my collection for the correct moment.
I like ambient and I like minimalist. I like Synth too. You might say lots of people (Eno for instance) did this a loooooong time before this guy but I still liked it. Remember the definition of Ambient is there is no discernable intrusive rhythm or key. It's in the background? It predates things like Disintegration Loops and Everywhere at the End of Time so could be classed as groundbreaking? I'll play this again.
This one nearly exceeded my patience, but managed to stay within tolerance through some interesting synth instrumentation and melodies. Felt very organic and alive in its production, which helped the 10-minute tracks feel slightly more tolerable and dynamic as a relatively static progression can be. This one will definitely get some hate here, but I was able to mostly vibe with it and I think it was the LP I needed today.
Can't distinguish this from the music that my wife listens to as white noise to fall asleep sometimes. I guess it is fine, it just makes me feel kind of...zzzzzzz
This wasn't the best for driving to work on a groggy, dark morning. That might have skewed my take on it.
It's very chilled and atmospheric. A bit too ambient for me, but definitely beautiful.
Pop!
Interesting background music. Some of the songs were interesting enough to want to replay and some sounded like a robot's idea of jazz.
Idk what it was about this one but I hated it so much in the first 20 minutes that I was about to dnf it before skipping ahead a bit and kinda enjoying where the album ended up. It’s no aphex twin but it definitely set a mood.
Yeah, ambient techno just isn’t really for me, sorry. There were some very interesting textures in this and I appreciate that it was a bit more varied than I initially thought - with the last couple of tracks picking up the tempo- but otherwise it all just kind of blended into one
I have three thoughts about this album, so you'd better believe I'm sharing them all! 1. Pretty much any track could be a background texture in virtually any song from Kid A. Listen to both through headphones (and within a couple of days of each other) for the strongest effect. 2. Anyone who enjoys this music should try the app 'Mubert' and/or the soundtrack to 'No Man's Sky', both of which have points where their procedurally generated sounds could easily inhabit space in this album. 3. When people catastrophise about AI taking over the creative industries, this sort of thing feels like it will be the first musical domino to fall, as AI can hoover up hours and hours, before spitting out a passable facsimile.
Unfortunately not on Apple Music, but I listened in on youtube--a nice ambient album. Alex and I had a discussion today about scaling back on these user albums a bit. It's becoming a Sisyphean task, as the final number has increased by dozens since we started, and I'd rather just listen to other things at this point. Today, this incredible journey comes not to a screeching halt end for me, but the cool down begins. I'll try reviewing albums I can, or ones I'm interested in, but others may get a cold shoulder. Apologies in advance to any I snub, but I've grown weary and I don't want the "listen before you die" to become "don't stop listening until you die." 3.5/5
A little too repetitive and ambient for my taste, but I see why people like it. 2.5/5, but rounding down.
I don't think I understand this genre. It's so monotone. Maybe it's good to meditate or something 2*
This was pleasant enough to listen to, solid as background listening. Everything kind of blurs together here, so there really weren't any standout tracks. I didn't dislike this and I appreciate a submission in this genre, but this one was fairly unmemorable for me.
Ambient- I’m the wrong audience.
Not sure what to do with this. I think i like ambient, but it doesn't have to go somewhere... even just a little. This barely has a heartbeat. This is some life later, Untitled 4 seems to have a little something as does Untitled 7, but it just isn't enough to want to stick with it, especially as they add a little static at times which makes it a bit less listenable.
Fourth studio album: check Seven songs seventy minutes: check Sequentially numbered pop songs that I'll never remember: check Looks like we're ready for launch. I wonder how long it would take for me to memorize this to the point that I could accurate identify which song is which. How many notes would it take me?
Perfectly fine e background music, but not something I'm looking for on here.
Ambient is not really my thing
I think I’m usually more open and understanding with these user submissions but wow, this is borning.
Music on ket.
For some reason not available on Apple Music and if not readily available to me :(
Why?
Ambient meditatvie relaxation music. Not a patch on the Om nommy nom song. Rating: 1 Playlist track: Pop1 Date listened: 04/11/24
An hour and 9 minutes for 7 tracks of electronic buzzing crap... no thanks. Sorry to the person who chose this record, but electronic music is my most despised genre. It's not you, it's me. But, 1 star selection in my opinion.
Not for me. I got desperate after 2 songs.
Ambient, ambient techno.Muuuuy machacón. Un 1.
Repetitive and boring as hell...
Gas is about right because it was a lot of hot air.
Not for me. Just plain BORING with seemingly no reason to listen to.
79 minutes of ambient. Fuck you.
