Album Summary

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (often shortened to Three Cheers or Revenge) is the second studio album by the American rock band My Chemical Romance, released on June 8, 2004, by Reprise Records. The album was produced by Howard Benson, and was written and recorded from late 2003 to March 2004. Writing sessions were highly influenced by the mental health and personal lives of the band members, particularly the death of Gerard and Mikey Way's grandmother. Revenge has been characterized as multiple genres: emo, alternative rock, pop punk, post-hardcore, punk rock, and pop rock. The album's more polished sound and extended production period marked a shift from the band's preceding release, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (2002). The style of tracks range from those aligned with traditional punk rock to more pop-structured tracks. Central themes of the album include love, loss, and revenge, with some songs also covering exploring one's gender and sexuality. The album follows a loose narrative that serves as a continuation of "Demolition Lovers" from Bullets; following the titular characters deaths, they are separated between heaven and hell, only able to re-unite should the male lover harvest the souls of a thousand men. The album received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success for both the band and the Reprise label. The record produced three singles—"I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena", and "The Ghost of You". It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) less than a year after its release, and has sold over three million copies in the United States. A "deluxe edition" of the album, with all of the original tracks remixed and four live recordings, was released on June 6, 2025.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is the second album of emo band My Chemical Romance. In some way their music has aged like good wine. At the time I thought it was ok and not more than that, but nowadays I really enjoy it. The Black Parade is a better album, but this one shows a preview of what's to come. "Helena", "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" and "The Ghost of You" are great songs and the rest of the album is not bad either. Not any filler material there.

User album #27. I probably have heard this band before, but I don't remember. I think maybe they are considered screamo(?) Let's see... Well, color me surprised! This is awesome! Sounds a bit like Coheed and Cambria which I love. And I'm 51. I'm not supposed to like this, am I? Oh well. I didn't really take the emo stuff seriously. I laughed out loud at "I'm not o-fucking-kay!" Favorite tracks: Give em Hell Kid and Thank You for the Venom. What the hell, 5/5

5 4 Love it Almost

Ok, I know I'm biased but my impression of bands like My Chemical Romance is that it all kind of sounds the same. Which is why I was surprised to read that they were trying to make every song sound distinct on this album. And ok, yeah, when I'm listening more closely it's a bit more diverse than I gave them credit for. Unfortunately I still found a lot of it kind of boring and flat. I appreciate that this is largely subjective and that other people probably think my favorite bands all sound the same too. But this album to me felt a bit like driving very fast on a long, straight road with no traffic. It's exciting at first but then inertia sort of takes over. You need a few curves in the road and some occasional accleration to make interesting. Otherwise, it's just kind of auto-pilot. What the album desperately needs is some dynamics to make the highs feel more high. Or simply put it just needs some space to breath and the gut punches that you get in good rock and roll songs. But that's just me. I did kind of enjoy "The Jetset Life is Going to Kill You" and yes, I concede that it's not *quite* the same song over and over again. I can't say it really made me into a fan though.

Sorry but MCR have always been a band I disliked.

Great pick !

Well, it’s no Black Parade, but still extremely solid. 2/2 from them on making emo albums that I actually like a lot, rather than merely tolerate

Iconic

Rating: 10/10

I loved The Black Parade and this one did not disappoint! Some interesting variety here with some real pop punk, emo, and Interlude evoked Radiohead a bit… what a great listen!

Yeah I know Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge very well, I've listened to it regularly since it came out, seen them play it live, all of that, and it's really good except to say that it's not as good as The Black Parade, though that's an impossibly high bar to hit. Since I don't class TBP as an emo album I reckon this is maybe the best emo album of all time, or certainly the one that defines a genre, and it's littered with hits. I don't think the non-singles are as good although It's Not a Fashion Statement... is an absolute belter and top 5 MCR songs for me, then Give 'Em Hell Kid is a wild ride. Just like the best records across any genre, if you can convince me of what you're singing about with passion, intensity and feeling in your voice, you've got me, and Gerard does that and then some. Easy and high 4/5, pretty close to a no-skips (Interlude is pointless), misses the 5/5 partly because they went on to do better but also because there are a coupla filler tracks.

Hard to compete with the decade-defining masterpiece that is The Black Parade, but this is still a fun and extremely catchy album from MCR. The singles still bang after all this time, now I'll have "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" stuck in my head for like a week.

Trip down memory lane. But this album was less good as I remember it

You know it's good as hell

I also was in high school in 2004

Emo, alternative rock, pop-punk, post-hardcore, punk rock. Está bien. Un 4.

These guys were on to something here. Slightly singles-heavy in terms of quality

Moves deliberately. Definitely one of the better ones for the time

Wasn’t as familiar with this LP as I am with Black Parade, and enjoyed hearing some new-to-me MCR. The band’s brand of blistering pop-punk has aged quite well relative to their peers, and this was another fun listen even if it feels a bit more understated and homogeneous than their other efforts. No doubting the cultural significance and impact of this band, so this feels like a worthy addition to the list.

An absolute blast. Not as ambitious in scope as its follow up The Black Parade, but a delightful explosion of emo rock, incendiary and endearing

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is theatrical, and that's not something that normally appeals to me. Underneath the shiny veneer are some genuinely good songs, but the high drama and bombast often get in the way rather than serving them. Helena and I'm Not Okay are the obvious singles and rightfully so. Reading the lyrics while listening, you can see exactly why I'm Not Okay struck a chord with teenagers when this came out. It's clever in places. But the songs that do best for me are The Ghost of You and I Never Told You What I Do For A Living, the two that close the album and feel genuinely emotional rather than performed. This is closer to Hüsker Dü than anything gothic or electronic, melodic pop sensibility wrapped in hardcore aggression. Familiarity with the songs only made me want to hear them stripped of the costume. The theatre should serve the song, and here it too often does the opposite.

Gerard is so talented but I've never connected with his main source of income. The genre (whatever you want to call it) doesn't appeal to me to be honest and maybe suits angsty teens better? Still, some of the tracks aren't too bad.

I missed out on this emoji phase. I wonder if I would have been a fan.

too long to be foisted in people .. fuck you

From a time period where I wasn’t really listening to much new music. Just doesn’t do much for me. I think if I was a little younger when this came out I might have really loved it. But as is it’s fine. Just doesn’t grab me.

I think it's okay. A little too early 2000s emo with that edginess but it was a product of its time. My personal rating: 3/5 My rating relative to the list: 3.5/5 Should this have been included on the original list? No.

Better than the other one tbh

A band name I always recognize but can never remember what their deal is. Competent post-punk, hardcore-adjacent rock is what. It's fine but I can never shake the feeling that things it reminds me of (Hüsker Dü, Bad Religion, Suburbs, Operation Ivy) did it better and frankly with more fun. So Dark. Grim end tale for the drummer too, friendly reminder that nitrous can kill you dead (I get it's not for sure that's what did it but you know, Occam's Razor). Dentist gives you oxygen with it for a reason, kiddos.

I think simply this genre / this band is not my speed at all. It's all too *press play then stay frenetic* at the same(ish) pace and volume. Also I really don't like the vocals - probably not necessarily a specific "this singer sucks" thing but this style (emo pop-punk?) just pushes me away pretty quickly and it's hard to not get distracted by it. It's all too much - not a lot of breathing room here. 3/10 2 stars IMO: Belonged in the book? No.

I didn't really care for this. Too frenetic for me. 2 stars.
