Album Summary

Pussy Whipped is the first full-length album by the American punk rock band Bikini Kill. It was released on Kill Rock Stars on October 26, 1993. It is their most commercially successful album, peaking at number 20 on the UK Independent Singles and Albums Charts. David Browne of Entertainment Weekly called Pussy Whipped "the first great riot-grrrl album". The Guardian wrote that "Hanna is so enraged that words to fetching tunes like 'Hamster Baby' and 'Star-Bellied Boy' are transmuted to wild shrieks." Heather Phares of AllMusic said, "'Rebel Girl' is a manifesto just waiting to be discovered, and the rest of the album sees the band occasionally adding fun to their recipe for punk chaos."

Girl punk groups are just way more consistent than the average. Nearly all of them that have come up on here have been a great time. I've made my peace with nobody being able to top X-Ray Spex (that saxophone's just too good), but this is the closest I've heard anyone come.

Yes, this is exactly what a punk album should be. 24 minutes of guitars, drums and killer vocal. Last track is a bit of a slowdown, but meh, it was the style at the time.

Glad to see Bikini Kill getting the 1001 recognition they deserve. Absolute ripper of an LP, and a shot in the arm for 90s' punk – the in-your-face rage and frustration channeled by Kathleen Hanna and co. funnels perfectly into 24 spastic minutes of musical release. May be somewhat homogeneous throughout its brief runtime, but that hardly matters when the raw, frenetic garage rock instrumentals at the album's core are so good. A much-needed addition to the list, not often a band spawns an entire subgenre and calls out the entire music industry so brashly in one go.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Blood one

A foundational text in the feminist punk movement. These are some rockin’ jams. They all sound pretty much like the same song so it’s a good thing that song fucks. It fucks hard. I enjoyed this a lot. Great submission. 4/5

Pretty good

Punk rock, riot grrrl. Ni fu ni fa.

Absolute shite

Rebel Girl is a great song. Listening to an entire punk album is a lot to ask, but this one was good.

Very standard punk. Was alright

Hell yea

We making it out of the comfort zone with this one! I think this should be on the 1001 for the same reasons I don't love this. It's a burst of noise and fury that stands out next to contemporaries Hole and Sleater-Kinney for its even more abrasive tone. But Dig Me Out and Live Through This had more discernable song structures and don't sound like shit. For the record, punk is one of the few genres that gets away with sounding like shit, so I can't fault Pussy Whipped for that. Followed this up with The Singles (1998), which is an interesting midway point between the scuzzy sound of this album and the polish of Le Tigre's self-titled. I get this is pioneering and all, but I don't know it adds anything substantial to this (already fairly shallow) post-punk/hardcore sound. Driving guitar, heavy drum and bass, vocals that are basically hollering. Supposedly there is something feminist going on with the lyrics but since I can barely make out a word that doesn't count for a lot. It's fine but I've outgrown this sound.

4/10. I still don't like Bikini Kill. Thought maybe I would have come around to them now that I am a cool guy(tm) who likes Sleater Kinney and Le Tigre, but I dunno there's just something about Bikini Kill's style of yelling and chaotically playing instruments that doesn't do it for me. Maybe that mean's they're better at what they are doing because it's harder for a man to enjoy it.

So this is the reason I can guess Grrrl as a word on Wordle? 4/10

This wasn’t my cup of tea, but seemed pretty good.
