Sounds like a collection of sad elevator music. Long songs…only 6 songs, but total of 45 minutes. The songs all have that pingy melody that sounds like it’s being played on one of those wooden percussion music boxes where you hit the various parts on the top with two sticks with rubber bouncy balls on the end. The vocals are all super quiet and forlorn sounding, all the words are super drawn out and long. Gives a weird feeling. I hated it for the first two songs. By the third one, it was putting me into a weird head space. Kinda trippy. Definitely has a vibe to it.
Jimi is always good. This album isn’t as good as the Ultimate Collection, but it’s still great to listen to in the background when need something to put you in the groove.
Weird album. Admittedly I had never heard of The The. Album had some different vibes going on. It sometimes sounded almost like Oingo Boingo. Sometimes it was a little more rock and sounded kinda like Smashing Pumpkins. Not bad, not great.
“Nd’eurotic to the bone, no doubt about it”… And suddenly I’m 14 again. One of the first albums that my best friend owned on CD. I was never really a huge punk fan, but it definitely brings back memories of being in middle school. This album is the epitome of teenagers in the 90’s. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could.
Loud simple music with a bit of a nerdy edge to it. Makes me think of something like The Ramones mixed with Talking Heads.
80’s to the max. This is one of the first albums I remember my parents playing as a kid. The first song “Shout” brings me right back to being a kid. Everybody Want to Rule the World is alright, but has been overplayed over the years. Head Over Heels is such a classic 80’s song. I don’t really like much from the 80’s, but this album will always have a bit of a nostalgic soft spot in my heart.
Not my favorite Rush album to be honest. I like Moving Pictures and Roll the Bones better, but still, it’s one of Rush’s most influential albums. I actually don’t like Progressive Rock all that much, but some of Rush’s songs just rock so hard and Neil Peart is absolutely insane.
Ugh, stab me in the ear with a fork. That would be more enjoyable than Simon and Garfunkel. I feel like listening to this album might actually cause erectile dysfunction. I force myself to listen to every album all the way through, but this one was a struggle. I’d rather listen to my tinnitus than more S&G.
Not my kind of music. Kinda boring. Not bad to put on in the background if you are working or something like that. Kind of has a spoken lyrical sound with and acoustical guitar, similar to Bob Dylan type music. Not as bad as Simon and Garfunkel, but kind of rough that these albums came up back to back.
Angry girl music from the height of 90’s grunge. Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain from Nirvana are the basically the poster children of that era. Never was a fan of Courtney Love and Hole. I do think I like it more now than I did back then though.
Hell yeah AC/DC! Rock on! Nothing else needs to be said.
Pros: Good heavy beats on a lot of the tracks. Kanye has a great rhythm to his vocals. A lot of interesting unique sounds from song to song. Each song is pretty different from the others. The album has a different sound than most rap albums. I actually like the pulsating background beats more than the front music on a lot of the songs. I’d like to see someone take the background sounds and beats and put something else on top of them. Cons: Too many sound effects, it can get a bit cacophonous. Sometimes within a song, there are jarring changes in the feel and sound as it changes from a heavy rap, to a soft instrumental, to some random sound effects. Too much self-aggrandizing narcissism. I also just can’t help but think about how much of a crazy mofo Kanye is while listening to his music.
Never heard of them. Was afraid it was going to be gospel music. Thankfully it was not gospel, it was Brit-Pop. Not bad, but really not anything special. The entire album just seemed really generic. No real unique sound to them. The songs were all pretty much structured the same. Seems like you could change any one of them out, including the singer, with a random journeyman musician and you would never notice.
Basically a French dude talking into your ear for an hour over some light music. Maybe that’s your thing. Not really for me. Plus, I don’t speak French, so I could be wrong, but I think this guy might have an unhealthy obsession with a chick named Melody.
We are family. I got all my sisters with me. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. They basically take one line and stretch it out to fill an entire song. I really don’t like disco. Now here I am twelve hours later and it’s still stuck in my head.
For the first 10 seconds of Ghost Rider, I thought maybe this could be a decent album. Nope. Monotonous and boring, the tracks are basically spoken tracks over repetitive sound effects. Of the total 32 minutes for the album, over 10 minutes are dedicated to Frankie Teardrop. I couldn’t help but laugh at how stupid the song was. “Oh Frankie Frankie…oh Frankie Frankie!” … 2 min of repetitive whirring sounds… scream into the mic.
Somewhat of an interesting listen. Seemed to have a mix of soul, early r&b, and maybe a bit of jazz all mixed together. He’s pretty talented, but the songs didn’t particularly grab my attention. Not an album I particularly loved, but I didn’t hate it or count down the minutes until it was over either.
Amy Winehouse was so talented. It was impressive that she could sound so much like singers such as Billie Holiday, but it doesn’t sound like it was a gimmick or an impersonation. Probably my favorite album to come up on here so far.
Yuck. Basically 80’s crap pop. This has everything I hate about 80’s music. Synthesizers, cheesy lead vocals, cheesy backup vocals, piano rhythms. Way too much emphasis on lousy singers and no real music behind it. Hated it.
The Smiths have always just been ok to me. For some reason, I’m just not a bit fan of the lead singer’s voice. His voice almost sounds kind of uppity or something.
Ok, Iron Maiden, how do I rate this? I feel like I should like metal music, since I like rock. However, I just can’t ever get over the high pitched scream singing that gets held for a super long time. I tend to like my rock music heavier and lower in tone. Metal always all just seems so high pitched. In any case, it’s high energy and the drums are always fast and in your face, so that part rocks. I just wish the vocals were done differently.
Pleasant surprise. I’ll admit that I’m a bit partial to Brit-pop, especially the depressing moody ones like Radiohead, and this seems to be right in that genre. I like the dark feeling of the album and although a couple of the songs go a bit overboard on sound effects, I really like it. Will definitely check out other albums by Doves now.
Not my jam. It is a bit of a weird mish-mash of styles. It’s got some weird punk, rockabillly, surf band vibes. I feel like if you threw Billy Idol, Brian Setzer, the Ramones, and the B-52’s in a blender, this is what would get spit out.
A couple of good classic songs and a bunch of long, slow instrumental pieces. Listened to it while on a road trip and about fell asleep and drove off the road. Not my favorite.
My 13 year old self loved this album back in the early 90’s, and my 43 year old self still likes it quite a bit today, possibly mostly for nostalgic purposes. Regardless, it was fun to head bang through all the songs for old times sake.
I really hate “American Pie”. I’m always a little embarrassed to mention it, as it seems like everyone else likes it, and I always feel people judge me for being un-American for hating it. It always seems so cheesy to me and the lyrics always make me cringe a bit. Plus, it’s almost 9 minutes long. In any case, I had never listened to any other songs by Don McClean. If I was only rating that song, I’d give the album 1 star. After listening to the rest of the album, I’ll upgrade it to 2 stars. Still not my type of music (too boring) by any means, but the rest of the songs don’t annoy me as much as American Pie does.
Boring yet somehow still catchy. Can take one riff and two vocal lines and stretch it out to 8 minutes on repeat. Disco sucks.
Not bad. Sounds like a garage bad or a band you would hear live at a local festival. Not a polished album, but I kind of liked that about it. Had some hints of Tom Petty and maybe some Counting Crows. I don’t like some of the songs, particularly the ones where the lyrics are all spoken instead of sung. 2.5 stars
Ignoring all the drama and ethical issues around Michael Jackson, this album is just too important to not give it a 5. Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It, Baby Be Mine, P.Y.T., all on one album? Insane. The only blemish is the horrible “The Girl is Mine” with Paul McCartney. Almost worth knocking off a star for that, but we’ll keep it at 5, since this really is that much of a heavyweight of an album.
Ok, not sure how to rate this. It’s not something I would just put on to listen to it. It’s more something I would use for meditation or maybe to help me fall asleep. It’s almost more of a tool than it is music to me I guess. That being said; I like the way that the sounds are put together. A lot of times with meditation/relaxation music, there are sounds mixed it that end up becoming distracting. However, this had a nice consistent sound and feel to it that makes it able to melt into the background. In general, I dig it and will give it a try for relation/meditation/sleep.
Super short songs. Interesting mix of sounds though with some songs having funky bass lines that sound kind of like RHCP or Primus. A bit rough and simple for a few of the songs, but overall I didn’t hate it.
I’ll admit that I never really knew what kind of music ELP played. I always assumed they were soft folksy music like Simon and Garfunkel. I was a bit surprised to find out they are actually Prog Rock. Prog Rock really has to thread the needle for me to like it, and this just doesn’t do it. I don’t like the wandering instrumental sound that makes you feel like it from a bad movie about outer space. Also, way too much synthesizer organ music. I’m not a huge piano fan anyways, and organ music makes it even worse.
90’s hip-hop. A good flow on a lot of the albums…reminded me of Jurassic 5 at times. However, there is also something about albums like these in the 90’s that just feels…I dunno…inauthentic. Kind of like they are the flake plastic cheese version of a real album. I think it has to do with the gimmicky, porny type intro where they are trying to add performances that are not part of the music. It was kind of in vogue to have those kind of intros, or like the short little acts (less than 10-15 seconds long) that they had in between tracks. Definitely a 90’s kind of thing that makes the album feel commercialized and a bit dated.
I generally like 60’s music, and this had a few rock songs that were alright, but it also was too often too far into the hippy-dippy, dreamy, everybody love everybody kind of 60’s music.
90’s rock brings back serious memories. Definitely reminds me of some of the music I was listening to in those days (Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, etc). I remember when this album came out, Hole got ripped by a lot of people for being sellouts. This album was less raw and less grunge than the previous album, and it felt a bit more commercialized. I was never a big fan of Courtney Love at the time, so it was never really on my radar. I guess I didn’t really think she was a good singer. Listening to it again now, I can see why the hardcore grunge fans would feel that way, as this album does feel more polished. To be honest, it’s more along the type of music I would have listened to and this album feels a bit easier to listen to than Live Through This, although I’m not sure I would say it’s actually the better album. Torn between 3 stars and 4 stars. Probably would be 3.5.
Haha…I can’t even take this album seriously. The Shaft theme song has always seemed comical to me, probably because it has been referenced in pop culture so many times. Most of the album feels like elevator music to me. Reminds me of music that would have been playing when my mom would drag me shopping with her through Pic N Save in the 80’s. It would have been a 1 star, but the 20-min long “Do Your Thing” barely gave me enough to give it 2 stars.
The music sounds great but I had a hard time paying attention to any of the songs. There just wasn’t any feeling there. It’s almost like it’s a bunch of incredibly talented musicians that don’t know each other but have each played these songs a million times and are just punching the clock to get their paycheck.
One of my favorite albums of all time. I remember when it came out while I was in college, and I must have listened to it at least a hundred times that year. From those first few descending notes on the first song, I was hooked. It’s unique, haunting, emotional. How to Disappear Completely is probably the most depressing song ever. It makes you just sit and wallow in it. That sounds horrible, but this album just makes you FEEL things...down to your soul. It makes you sad and pensive, but it makes you feel alive. I love it.
I always want to like the Pixies, but every time I listen to them, I just…don’t. Not exactly sure why. The sound of the guitar is just too harsh and it overpowers the rest of the sound. I like a couple of their songs here and there (like Where is my Mind?), but otherwise, not really a fan.
Pleasantly surprised. Fast paced songs. Heavy rock on a lot of songs. Sounds a bit like Rush without the long hippy nerdy interludes, and with maybe some Rusted Root percussion thrown in on some and some fast System of A Down or Tool type patterns on others. Definitely some tricky drum rhythms. There are some slow filler type songs mixed in that I would rather skip, but the fast ones hit pretty hard.
I like this album more and more the older I get. I never really listened to it much when it came out, but I like it more now. It’s a really well put together album.
I don’t like a majority of r&b albums. They all sound the same to me. This is no exception. All the songs sound the same, and I’m just not a fan of his voice. That’s a problem since the songs are pretty minimalistic and the focus really is just on the vocals. A nice short surprise by Andre 3000 in there, but otherwise, I struggled to get through it. Also, I hate skit tracks or skits to open songs and there were a few of those in here.
Smashing Pumpkins are hard for me to rate properly. They are a great rock group and they have some fantastic songs…but I just can’t stand Billy Corgan’s voice. If they had someone else sing it, it would be a 4 star album for me, maybe even a 5. But I just can’t stand it because his voice is so grating to me.
Weird album to rate. I had never even heard of these guys. Interesting mix of songs. Each one has a unique style. I don’t usually like new artists when I hear them for the first time so I tend to judge them a bit harshly. I actually ended up listening to this one twice since it was so interesting. Songs reminded me of several different artists: David Bowie, Tom Petty, B-52’s, Muse. Red Dress was one song I liked the first time I heard it.
Ok, so I’ll admit that U2 has some issues. Bono can come off a bit arrogant and cringey, and U2 sometimes act like they think they are more important than they are… But man, they put out some great albums. Achtung Baby is maybe my 3rd or 4th favorite album of theirs (behind Joshua Tree and War at least), and it’s still incredible and easily a 5 star album for me. The song writing is phenomenal and the album has such an awesome feel to it. Love it.
CCR is feel good music. It seems like something you would put on after your last day at a job you hate. You walk out the door, get in your car, put on CCR, and drive out into the countryside on a deserted road on a sunny day and just cruise.
Queen never really seems like a real band to me. They seem like a musical caricaturized version of a band. Like if there was a musical that did an over the top opera of a rock band, this is what they would end up with. A couple of the songs were alright. The Loser in the End was pretty good. Most I hated, partly just because they do that thing where all of the vocals sing and hold a long high note together, and they do it so often. The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke is just ridiculous. I would maybe give them 2.5 if I could.
I will admit there are several songs on the White Album that are not my favorite Beatles songs. But it’s still the Beatles. Throw in the fact that White Album includes While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and that alone is enough for 5 stars.
I’ve got a soft spot for dark and depressing music (Tool, Radiohead, Morphine), so naturally this has to be a 5 for me
The Kinks are a hard one to rate. I can never tell where to put them on the scale between the Beatles and the Monkees. They have some great songs, but they also have some really cheesy gimmicky songs that make them feel like a cheap knockoff of the Beatles (like the Monkees). I’d probably go 3.5 stars, but we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and go with 4.
I had a copy of this album back in high school but never really listened to it.of course, Bittersweet Symphony is the best known track, but to be honest, I’m so sick of that song. Listening to the rest of the album, I actually liked it. Gives a lot of Robbie Williams and maybe Jane’s Addition type vibes.
So so. Good background music. Acoustic and folksy, Kinda like James Taylor with a bit of a drawl. Not my favorite but I didn’t hate it. 3 stars seems perfect.
Just noise. Not interesting enough to listen to intently. Not relaxing enough to have on in the background. Maybe if you were on mind altering drugs it would be interesting. Was hoping for more of a chill bossa nova vibe, but nope.
Not bad. Thundering drum set. Feels like if you took the members of Cream when they were still in high school and playing together in their garage before they really developed their skills, this is what you might get.
How many random instruments can you throw into one song? Messy experimental prog rock. I think I heard a zuzuphone in there somewhere, and I’m not even sure that’s a real instrument. Plus the lead singer’s voice, along with all of the vibrato, grates on me.
British new wave punk style music. Would have maybe liked it a bit more if it weren’t for so much organ music thrown in there. I just typically don’t like organ or piano in my rock music.
Good musicians but I don’t like the music. Cheesy, jazzy, and just not my style. Plus they use synthesizer/organ a lot, or which I generally am really not a fan.
This was a hard one to rate. I had to listen to it twice. It could be anywhere from a 2 star to a 4 star for me. Some of the songs have a gloomy ethereal kind of feel to them, kind of like Radiohead, and I like those. However, some were too spacey and artsy. Hard one to rate but I guess a 3 makes sense.
Soft, cutesy, quirky album. A lot of it sounds like it would fit in during the final scene of movies like Little Miss Sunshine or Juno, where all the conflicts are resolved and everyone is content. If Jessica Day (from New Girl) had a favorite album, this would probably be it. Long album (1 hr, 15 min). Not sure what to give it. It’s not bad by any means, but it just doesn’t really fit the soundtrack of my daily life I guess.
Enjoyable. Easy background music. Reminded me of David Gray on a few of the songs, but with a bit more of a bluesy feel. Good relaxing music. Hadn’t ever listened to his music before. Bummer to read he’s apparently been a real asshole to several female musicians. Puts a damper on enjoying his music.
Slow folksy acoustic with a bit of an old school country fee to some of it. As far as slower background music goes, I kinda dig it. I feel like it might be one that I like better on another listen.
I was never a big fan of Metadeth or speed/thrash metal growing up, so I wasn’t looking forward to this one to be honest. After listening to it, I actually didn’t despise it as much as I thought I would. A few of the songs were more the type of heavy metal that I like than I expected. If you took the best 8 or so songs from the album, I’d probably give it 3 stars. However, it was 21 songs and 90 minutes long. Because of that, it was a slog to get through all of the thrash metal I don’t typically like, so I had to give it 2 stars.
My favorite Rush album. So many great songs. Neil Peart is ridiculous. So many awesome rhythms on this album. One of my favorite of all time.
This one was a bit of a roller coaster. The songs have good energy and they were good to listen to out on a walk/run. Electronic sound with upbeat tempo. The sound can get repetitive within a song as a lot of the sounds just pound on sixteenth notes all the way through the song. It actually can get a bit tiring to listen to the whole album. I probably would have dropped it down to 3 stars by the end, but then New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down saved it and brought it back up to a 4. That last song was great.
I’d never really listened to The Flaming Lips but kinda knew what their vibe was all about. Pretty odd songs with a sound that is often off the wall and weird. Kinda hipster-ish. Giving it a bit of benefit of the doubt that I might like it more on another listen.
Love this album. Sultry, moody music that makes me feel like I’m sitting in the corner booth in a darkened bar with live music playing and dim lighting reflecting off of dark red curtains hung around the bar.
I had no idea no idea who Solange was before listening to this album. As I was listening to it, I kept thinking it sounded a lot like the most boring songs that Beyoncé ever sang. It wasn’t until I looked her up and realized it is her sister. Not my style of music at all. Too slow, too boring. Even the breaks and cuts in the song grated on me. I feel for her though, as it’s gotta be hard to be in the music business with Beyoncé as your sister.
It was alright. The songs were upbeat and sounded good, but I just really wasn’t a fan of the lead singer’s voice. Her voice just seemed grating to me.
Awesome album. So many classic CCR songs. A lot of bluesy rock songs too. I even liked the 10+ minute long rendition of I Heard It Through The Grapevine, and I usually am not a fan of overly long songs. Get some beers and head out to the beach, put this album on, and just cruise.
Now that’s some old school, folksy, country sound. I don’t know if I love it or hate it.
I like it more than The Beach Boys I guess. Pretty generic sounding but there were a few good ones. Long ass album though.
I’ve always felt like Kiss sounds like they are just a Kiss cover band. Never been a fan.
I know this isn’t a great album. It’s basically just a bunch of repetitive beats and noise. …However….I did listen to it while on a road biking exercise ride, and I have to admit, it served a good purpose. It was not distracting, no vocals to draw my attention, and the music had a good pace and cadence to it that helped me just get into a zen zone and just pedal away. So it has its place.
The music is not half bad but the lead singers voice grates on me a lot of the time. Didn’t hate it, but wouldn’t actively choose to listen to it again.
One of my favorite albums of all time. I’ll be the first to admit that Bono can be annoying and pretentious and, well, douchey, but this album is just fucking fantastic. Even if I’ve listened to it 100 times since then, it always brings me back to how it felt growing up as a teenager in the 90’s.
Where to go with this? The Wall is difficult to rate. Its not something you can appreciate by just throwing it on and kind of listening to in the background. You have to sit and listen attentively and connect with it. It feels more like an artistic piece than a musical album. It’s like a novel in musical form. I can see how people that grew up in the era would find it so important on a personal level. I just am not the type to sit and get that cozy with the underlying message of a song. Maybe part of that is the fact that I really don’t listen to lyrics at all. I feel like this should get 5 stars based on the real impact that it has on a lot of people. However, as I listened to it, I wanted to give it 3 stars. Near the end, Comfortably Numb came on, and that song always does hit me in the feels a bit, so I feel comfortable giving it 4 stars.
Meh, I don’t know…wasn’t really feeling it. Maybe if I listened to it again, but really don’t feel like it. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and go with 3 stars but nothing about the album really captured my interest.
