The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
Sep 12 2022

Just noting something strange: I actually have two lists going through this site, and this is the first time they’ve both had the same album on the same day; and it’s September 9, 2022 - the day after Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Hard to believe that it’s just a random selection, but, if so, it’s quite a bizarre coincidence. Unfortunately, that coincidence may the most memorable thing about listening to the album. The music was enjoyable enough, though nothing really struck me. The lyrics had some wry humor, but weren’t especially funny. It was worth listening to once, but I doubt I’ll come back to it.

Psychedelic country. I’m glad I heard it, and I’d like to check it out again, but I don’t think anything here will become a favorite of mine. Does sound very dated.

Fantastic album! A fresh take on classic rock and soul sounds, with great production and introspective lyrics. Personally, this album really meant a lot to me in 2020, with it’s themes of separation, loss, a sense of doom, racial injustice (including the words of the late great John Lewis), but ultimately a sense of hope and perseverance. I still keep coming back to it, too.
