Arctic Monkeys
First half is all bangers and obviously fake tales is one of my favorites to cover.
All the drumming is sick and there are a ton of good guitar riffs. The lyrics are also pretty clever and funny and the last song kinda perfect sums up the album.
The last line also reminds of seeing the Salisbury boys do some heinous shit when we’re fucked up and if a guy in any other group did it you’d think he’s a fucking douche but it’s your boy so it’s funny as hell.
Definitely one of my favorite albums and is a classic garage rock album.
Favorite: A certain romance
Least favorite: I guess still take you home

Elvis Costello
First two tracks are bangers and start the album off really strong.
I hadn’t listened to blame it on Cain in a while and forgot how good that song is and I like the energy and angst of that one and the first half in general.
The four song run of Alison to less than zero mixes in some chiller songs and shows how crazy the songwriting is for a debut album.
Second half slows a little bit for me and overall it doesn’t have something to bring it to a 5 but it’s still as solid of a 4 as you can get and paved the way for a lot new wave and post punk artists.
Favorite song: Alison
Least favorite: watching the detectives song is ok but white people doing reggae beats is never great

Didn’t love the first half at first cuz I usually like his RnB stuff more than the big band sound and the horns were crazy in headphones but listened to it again in the car and it grew on me.
Overall was a great album and just about anything by ray charles is classic.
Honestly could go either way on a 4 or 5 and was my favorite of albums I haven’t listened to all the way through yet.

I wanted to like this one more than I did but didn’t really get into it.
His slower songs felt like Nick Drake/Leonard cohen songs and the wordy rock songs felt like mid 60s Dylan but nothing seemed all that original to himself or better done than those artists. I guess it makes sense that the best song is an ode to other pop icons he listened to.
That being said, the songs were all still decent and American Pie is a classic for a reason.
Feel like this one could grow on me but just wasn’t feeling it today.

Albums like these are why I was excited for this whole album a day thing cuz idk if I would have sought this album out but I ended up really enjoying it.
Definitely was a challenging album to listen to but was better for it in my opinion. The rawness and edge didn’t feel force or like a crutch to hold up shitty instrumentals and made it feel like a loud music intense live show.
Super unison really stood out as an interesting track and helped set the tone for the really solid second half that followed and this long dynamic track set it apart from a lot of hardcore punk I’ve heard before.
I’m hesitant to rate it as a 5 but I could see it getting to a 5 after re-listening a few times cuz I’ll definitely come back to a lot of these songs.
👍: super unison, hand over fist

Definitely better during the songs with tight grooves and riffs like walk this way. Steven Tyler’s lyrics and singing just ruins a lot of it for me.
It just felt like having a boomer Rock station on the entire time and maybe it was cool to be the first to this sound but I’ve heard done by too many 40 year old cover bands in ocean city.

Wasn’t very hyped when I was it was a spoken word album and at first the vocals seemed produced oddly but the album grew on me after a couple songs.
All of the instrumentals were vibing and were played perfectly. The lyrics were also some of the best off any album we’ve heard so far.
Highlights for me would be the bridge of a very precious time and how it changes the meaning of the questions he’s asking and the sentiment of the whole song in general. The watergate blues was funny and still relevant in a lot of ways. The bottle was a jam and was definitely a huge lyrical influence for Kendrick on swimming pools.

Take your pick of the 10-11 best songs and you’ve got a great album in there (same goes for most double albums).
Aside from the lack of re-listenability from the length, the songs are all pretty good and have the classic Hüsker du sound with fuzzy guitars and sick drumming.

I see why this would be on a list for influential albums cuz this is straights 80s post punk before that genre was invented.
The instrumentals are the highlight of the album. The singing and lyrics are weird af but I can see why some people would get into that kind of sound.
Good mix of tracks too with some fast paced buzzcocks type punk songs thrown in with the keyboard heavy songs.
I’m hesitant to give this anything higher than a 3 cuz I only got to listen to it one time through but it’s a 3 I’m wanting to listen to again.

Sounds exactly like what you’d expect from U2. Kinda cheesy but well made.
Guitars sound cool af and fill up the space really well. The delay on all off the riffs and solos make all of the sounds sound huge. Makes up for some of Bono’s Bono-ness on songs like the fly where the guitar solo saves the song.
The bass tone and bass lines also are solid throughout the album.
Definitely easy to hate on U2 but I think it’s objectively well made with some catchy songs and is a decent 3 that I could understand people really liking.

The Go-Go's
The vocals are the highlight of this album all around. The backing vocals on tonite were cool during the breaks and worked well with the guitar riff to make a cure like moody song.
I can see how this influenced a ton of 80s bands and still influences newer bands today like best coast but to me the songs got a little repetitive and I was hoping for some more dynamic changes and energy from some songs.
This one is right on the edge between a 3 and 4 for me cuz it’s better than most 3’s I’ve rated but idk if it’s quite a 4.

I was saying to Bryce before those two songs that the back half of these albums has been the make or break point in deciding how I will rate them and if I want to listen again and the end of this one made it a 4 for me.

The interaction between the strings and the guitar on certain songs is really cool and along with the production helps boost this album a lot.
The songs aren’t especially well written and have pretty simple structures but the melodies on most of them are pretty good and his dark vocal delivery is unique.
I can see how this influenced a ton of British artists from the Smiths to Blur and Oasis so it’s cool for that reason too.
Wasn’t a mind blowing album by any means but I did enjoy it and it was one of the better 3’s I’ll give.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
Eurythmics
Wrap it up sounds like the song SpongeBob’s pet jellyfish plays when he’s throwing a rave at SpongeBob’s house.
This album was dope though. The three song run of the walk, sweet dreams, and Jennifer made the album for me.
The walk has so many different elements that occur and build throughout the song and all of them help lift the song rather than distract from it. Sweet dreams is obviously an 80s banger. Jennifer is like Proto-dream pop and almost sounds like a beach house song. It was a surprisingly intimate song and contrasted the previous two darker songs really well.
Certain songs seem a little dated but I think that’s partly cuz of how much of an 80s staple this is.
👍: walk, sweet dreams, Jennifer

Idek what to write about this one. It was probably influential for some hip hop artists but I have no frame of reference to know how influential it was.

Beatles
Come together: every part of this song is dope. The simple ass but moving groove, the lyrics/vocals, and the keys and guitar licks that come in. I overlook this one a lot but it’s a tune.
Something: maybe the best chord progression and love song in pop music. The strings are beautiful and the key change for the middle part lifts the song before mellowing back out for the end. The bass also is weird but fits the song really well.
Maxwell: probably the worst track but still kinda funny
Oh darling: just a good song with insane vocals. The slight backing vocals on this one are also just classic Beatles harmonies.
Octopus’s garden: simple song but kinda reflects the sentiment behind the album of wanting to make one more joyful album as a full band before the drama outside of the studio eventually broke them up. Guitar licks are really catchy.
I want you: the noise ending is sick and it’s another dark groove to vibe to like come together.
Here comes the sun: Perfect 60s pop song. Been played so many times that people overlook it but it’s always fun to listen to and the production/harmonies/lead synth lines are great.
Because: harmonies are crazy on this one and is one of those songs you’d really only hear from the Beatles
You never give me your money: “out of college money spent see no future pay no rent” that’s life man
Sun king: another chill jam with a great guitar tone and perfect harmonies
First 3 song medley: the guitar licks on bathroom window are sick. I think making them a medley helps speed through the second half and keeps you intrigued.
Second medley: golden slumbers has a great melody and I like the call back to you never give me your money in carry that weight. The instrumental breaks in that one are really interesting and the lead guitar is smooth af. The end is a great way to end it and shows how much the Beatles were open to fucking around even on one of the most anticipated albums ever by throwing in drum solos, trading guitar solos, and ending with a string arrangement.
Her majesty: wasn’t even supposed to be on the album and they didn’t know it was there till after it sent to production
Just a happy album all around. I feel like people get caught up in wanting albums to be perfect where every song is deep and emotional but I think the reason this one is great is how it can switch from being a genre defining song to almost nursery like songs that they made just to have fun. It’s an album that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is better off for it.
👍: all but favorites are something and oh darling

Idk how y’all were hating on this one fr.
The guitar riff breaks that follow the choruses on I’m drowning are unexpected but sick.
Baseline on second head goes crazy and is a little smiths like.
I like how the album is really close to being pop but always has an element or chord progression that makes it darker.
The moody lyrics and delivery, bass lines, and guitar riffs definitely influenced a lot of British groups after them.

For a non Beatles fan this album is probably waaaay too long but I’m obviously a huge fan so it’s like a gold mine of classics as well experimental tracks that makes you feel like you’re in the studio for a day hearing all the a-sides and the b-sides they’re working on.
I will, mother natures son, Julia, and blackbird are some of the best acoustic songs ever and show they can be great songwriters even without the orchestras and experimentation that made so many other Beatles songs great.

Torn between a 3 and a 4 on this one cuz nothing stuck out as great but I liked the rough and noisy vibe of the album a lot.
Other grunge bands seemed a little clean and whiny while this one still has the rawness and energy of an underground band.
The guitar playing is never off but has a loose vibe that feels like it’s about to fall off the rails but never does.
Broken hands goes hard and the beat on pokin around is a lot of fun.
Gonna rate a 4 cuz I think this would be sick to see at a show and I like that they tried to keep that feel.

I love a the satirical lyrics of the album and its depictions of different characters and aspects of modern life. Instant British classic with its mix of humor, timeless melodies and harmonies, and its new take on musical influences like the Kinks (harmonies and instrumentation of end of a century) and the jam (on songs like trouble in the message center and Tracy jacks).
Even though the melodies seem familiar, all of the songs seem fresh and unique from each other so there was very few dull moments. It might not be perfect but my enjoyment of the album was a 5.

Super late to this one but I finally got the chance for another listen through. Very much night and day between first to second listen. The album has been hyped up to be very transcendental and I didn’t really understand why at first.
On second listen I was driving with my dog on a nice day and it hit me a little more. It’s a very free album lyrically and musically that takes you to another place if you just kinda drive and let it play. A lot of the songs like sweet thing have very all over the place lyrics but all have the same sentiment that tie them together and come off as a stream of consciousness which I think works well. Like if you go into a studio and try to make a happy song but make it into a perfect pop song with everything very neat it loses that carefree feeling which this album conveys very well.
The last song is also intriguing cuz it kinda comes out of the blue and has a much darker theme and sound.

Obviously the first half is full of bangers and Michael’s plus Quincy jokes production makes all of them classics but the back half blends a lot of soul, jazz, and RnB for a smooth vibe to close it. Comparing it to the first half could make it seem lackluster but it’s really a great close to a great album that full of insane grooves, smooth vocal harmonies, and way ahead of their time beats.

Not in in your face great album but definitely one that you could sit with for a while and it would grow on you.
Starts off with a jam and I was thinking it would be a pretty lively album but it moved into a somber and desolate album about isolation due to the fake fulfillment of fame and loss of youth.
Revolution blues is a really interesting one and almost feels like he’s siding with manson’s viewpoint due to his hatred of Hollywood’s general bullshit and lack of substance.
I also love the last two songs touching on some of his own personal loneliness with the imagery of sitting in front of your tv with nothing good to do and the recounting of his old 60s folk scene days in ambulance blues. Motion pictures has so many good lines and sums up the vibe of the album really well: having everything you think people would dream of like fame, fortune, and a fancy tv but all you feel is isolated.

Sonic Youth
Really influential album and sound. All of the instrumentals are dope and have a lot of cool dynamic changes. I also like the very straight forward lyrics in some of these songs. A lot of the noise/shoegaze bands usually have very cryptic lyrics but songs like swimsuit issue are almost like punk lyrics.
I didn’t love Kim Gordon’s vocals at first but they grew on me and the music is just so good.
JC has a haunting kinda sound that I really like and stuck with me. A lot of the songs have great riffs and/or melodies under the layers of noise and distortion which I feel like takes the songs to another level and conveys the energy of the writing really well. Whether it’s adding to a fast song to take it another level or destroying the more soft songs like JC. So many cool dynamic and tempo changes in this one too that draw you in and makes the album fly by.

Narrative so far is basically “we’re not all racist in the south👉👈🥺”
Boring good ole boy ass music that adds nothing to Southern/Americana music. Aside from lyrics, the singing sucks and so does the overall sound and instrumentation.
Fuck these guys are dumb. Is he trying to say George Wallace wasn’t racist and his worst sin is just being a pandering politician?
“Guys I have an idea for an album!! Let’s retell the history of the South that downplays segregation and specifically only mentions white artists. Their chord progressions and guitar playing definitely weren’t inspired by black blues musicians 20 years before them so no need to mention their accomplishments. White people have such a proud history in the South and only telling their stories is the best way to retell the history of the south.”

I don’t think this one suffered from being too long as much as some of the other double/triple albums did. I liked just about every track on it and there are plenty of different genres being mixed in this album to keep you intrigued.
Personal favorites are Here is No why and 1979. Here is no why’s riff is fucking sick, really moody, and like the rest of the album it has a great guitar tone. 1979 is just a perfect song and for me it encapsulates the nostalgic feeling of this album really well.
Toss up 4/5 for me but the only thing that might hold it back is that the back half didn’t have as many standouts as the first. Even though I liked the whole second half it didn’t hit as hard as the first.

The Doors
Listened to the doors a lot growing up but fell off listening to them in recent years so this was a nice re-listen.
It’s cool to see when bands hit the ground running with their first albums and immediately find their sound like with this debut. Manzarek’s keys lead the way on the best songs off of this one like Soul Kitchen, Break On Through, and Light My Fire.
Jim Morrison’s vocals and lyrics are also unique and an interesting contrast to the light hippy music of the 60’s. The vocals can go from a deep, jazzy tone to erratic and loose rock singing that elevates a number of songs. I think the lyrics are best on songs like Break On Through where they aren’t the focus of the song but add a darkness to it that matches the jazz/blues rock instrumentals. On The End the lyrics lose that sleekness and come up really flat in their aim to be groundbreaking.
Other slight complaint with this album is the covers don’t really seem to add much and even though Alabama song is kinda funny idk why you’d put it in this one.
👍: light my fire, break in through, soul kitchen

In The Wee Small Hours
Frank Sinatra
We can kinda thank this album for this entire list because it was one of the first times a major artist specifically chose songs for an album based around a cohesive theme both lyrically and sonically and reimagined the way we view albums.
All that aside this album is just a mood from start to finish. The title track immediately sets the scene and allows the rest of the album to take you through the varying feeling and thoughts you have after being heartbroken.
The band and Sinatra do a great job of portraying the range of emotions from the frustrated end of “When your lover has gone” to the dreamy “I see your face before me” to the despair of the title track. They also know when to add more emotion to a song by stripping away some of the flares. The smaller backing band on Dancing on the ceiling allows for a more intimate song along with the freely playing Spanish guitar that sounds like a memory of dancing with the one you love.
There are a few tracks I wasn’t immediately struck by like Ill wind but I think they serve the narrative well and that song still shows another side of the emotional range of the album by focusing on the feeling of being sick of being sad and just wanting it to all blow away. That one is also cleverly placed cuz if you had any listener fatigue at that point from the consistent theme it’s almost like he’s saying “yeah me too this shit sucks.”
Every song on this one serves a unique purpose and Sinatra’s voice ties it all together with an earnestness that brings every story to life.
👍: I see your face before me, dancing on the ceiling, In the wee small hours

The Smashing Pumpkins
Apparently Billy Corgan is problematic for some reason but don’t fucking tell me why cuz I don’t need this shut ruined for me.
This one doesn’t have as clear of a highlight for me as Mellon Collie did with 1979 but every single song is great and I could listen to this one just about anytime. I honestly don’t know why I don’t listen to the Smashing Pumpkins more cuz the songwriting and guitar playing is as good as any 90s group.
This album does a great job of having a good mix of sounds and moods from the really heavy parts to the lighter ones like Disarm and Soma. Even the songs themselves can have wild dynamic shifts like in Soma and t but everything still comes off as cohesive and sounding like a group that is totally in their bag.
Also I agree with pat, the little half beat pauses with the feedback on mayonnaise go hard.
👍:mayonnaise, cherub rock, soma

Sticky Fingers
The Rolling Stones
Typical Stones album: has a couple huge hits (can’t you hear me, wild horses, brown sugar) and some of the dumbest blues songs you’ve ever heard (you gotta move, I got the blues).
Never listened to Sway all that much but really enjoyed the groove this time around. Can’t you hear me knocking has a similar mid tempo groove that fucking rips. The first half of that song is peak rock n roll. The riff is great, the drums are simple but groove, and kick jagger adds a ton of attitude to it.
Bitch gets right back into the rocking songs after the shit show of you gotta move but is followed up by another couple dull songs. Those ones aren’t as bad just not great.
Dead flowers has always made me laugh and is a funny fake country song. Moonlight mile is a classic sounding album closer.
Good album that could be great if you trim that fat and replace it with one or two more well written songs. Like I said though that’s just about every stones album.
👍: can’t you hear me knocking, sway

Maybe I should’ve gave this a better chance but it’s just reminds me of every cheesy sounding 90s post grunge band ever so I didn’t really to listen too intently.
As soon as I hear that wannabe Eddie vedder style of singing I tune out. Some of the songs are kinda catchy or have a good groove but I’m not interested in listening to much of this ever again. It sounds like an album that tried to keep coasting off the wave of grunge music but couldn’t find any interesting places to take the genre.
Listening to this right after smashing pumpkins also made me realize that even though Billy corgan isn’t the best singer at least he went for his own style during this era of every rock singer sounding the same.
This one was really well produced though so even though it wasn’t great it wasn’t unpleasant to listen to at all.
👍:look at you

Blonde On Blonde
Bob Dylan
Blonde on Blonde isn’t my favorite of his (still top 3) but it definitely feels like the closest he ever got to fulfilling his vision as an artist. It’s filled with surreal stories, circus like characters and instrumentals at times, a bright soulful sound, and underneath the layers of sarcasm some of his most tender songs like visions of Johanna.
There’s some albums like this one that aren’t punk albums but embody that rebellious spirit and go against all expectations. At this point, Dylan was well into being hated by the folk community for going electric and rather than pulling back he doubles down on it and ditches New York all together for Nashville and writes a collection of even more long winded songs in a style that owes nothing to the New York folk scene.
A lot of the songs are filled with sarcasm and take slight digs at the materialism and fake activism of the New York scene but they don’t come off as harsh as songs off of Highway 61. The humor of many songs sound more like Dylan accepting that severed tie rather than having as much anger towards it.
I definitely appreciated this album more this time listening to it and enjoyed going deeper into the lyrics. Even without driving into the lyrics the album has a unique sound that has great musicianship but still sounds very loose.
Also I read pats review first and totally disagree about the album opener. Rainy day women is awesome.
👍: visions of Johanna, just like a woman, one of us must know

Muse
It’s little overdramatic at times but I liked this more than I expected. I’m probably gonna give it a 3 but I enjoyed listening to it and there’s a good number of songs I’ll add.
I could also see people say that this is a radiohead rip off but I’m not a Radiohead nerd so that doesn’t matter to me.
I said it to Pat already but this album sounds like an edgy version of the killers especially on Starlight and a few other songs. For some people that’s probably awesome but idk if it’s quite my go to sound.
The singing is on point the entire album except for the weird high auto tune at the end of the album. Really all of the instrumentals are well done too if you’re into that intense sound. I do like how soldiers poem breaks up the high drama songs too and almost sounds like a beach boys song at the end.
Good music for the gym so I’ll come back to it for that.
👍:starlight, soldiers poem, assassin

Don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing that I fell asleep to this album twice while trying to listen to it.
Super chill one that you can relax to and enjoy listening to the wall of sound. I saw some of the complaints about lack of vocal melodies but that’s a huge part of what makes this enjoyable for me. There’s no main line to follow so you can drift in and out of listening to any of the instruments and their specific parts cuz it’s all so heavily layered or you just let the whole wall of sound hit you.
I’ve been getting more into shoegaze the past year and this is another album in that genre I’ll come back to a good bit.
👍: don’t know because none of them stick out as way more memorable than the others but again that’s part of the reason I liked it

Music From Big Pink
The Band
This is the style of Americana/country/folk rock I can vibe with. When jazz/blues/bluegrass players were still all mixed in with the scene so the musicianship was rock solid and the music itself had soul to it.
All of the songs have a great groove so even when the lyrics aren’t the best. That being said most of the songs are well written too especially the ones Bob Dylan helped or wrote himself. I shall be released is one of my favorites by Dylan especially the version Jeff Buckley does. And the weight is an all time classic that never gets old and is the perfect Americana song so it’s kinda funny that it was written by a Canadian.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
David Bowie
I think it’s important to know Bowie did tons of characters like Ziggy throughout his career cuz that’s what separates this from some of those cheesy old rockstars who took the godlike archetype of rockstars way too seriously. To Bowie this was just another mask he wore as an artist.
It also makes the album way more fun and cinematic and has become a humorous take rockstars and celebrities by comparing them to alien creatures.
Even when you ignore the narrative the album still has a ton of great jams and lyrics like on Soul love. If you look at it through Bowie’s perspective rather than Ziggy’s it seems like a shot at the hippy love songs of that time that make love seem like the answer to everything but never describe what it even is or looks like. Bowie is obsessed with this divine like idea but can never actually feel it. The imagery of the first verse also makes you immediately realize this won’t be another cheesy love song.
The imagery throughout this album is what sets the lyrics apart for me. During a time where singer songwriter music was at its peak and songs were all very realistic, Bowie says fuck that I’m describe a totally different version of the world.
The music is also all really well written and performed and the song hang on to yourself even sounds like a punk riff 5 years before punk was even invented.
This seems like the type of album I would hate and if anyone besides Bowie tried this it would be so corny but he made a style that is completely unique to himself and I respect that.
👍: moonage daydream, soul love, rock n roll suicide

Was a fun listen through the first time but lost most of its charm as I went back through some of them. Any of them with lyrics are dumb as hell and would’ve been better as a completely instrumental album.
Metropolis reminds me a 90s video game soundtrack a little bit and I think this whole album would’ve made a decent soundtrack if they went completely instrumental. They needed a better songwriter/composer to make all of these cool sounding ideas into good songs.
Also neon lights started off so well and was totally ruined by the vocals. “Sad!” -Bryce

Was about to give this one a whole second listen through cuz I wanted to give the lyrics a chance but then thought what’s the point. I don’t like the music so it’s not gonna make a difference.
The descriptions of this one call it something like an album waiting to be rediscovered by its intended audience. I’m not that audience.
I totally see its appeal and combing show-tunes with a singer songwriter/Americana quality is unique but lost on me.
I think I’ll come back to this one day and give it another shot cuz maybe I just didn’t get it but not feeling it today.

The Cure
Good album and like some of the reviews said it sounds like a stepping stone to even better albums to come.
I was enjoying more of the fast paced and built up songs over the ambient tracks but I think that might be due to setting. It’s almost summer so listening to ambient goth rock is not exactly what I’m looking for but this was still a really good album and I’d probably enjoy it more around Halloween.
The four track run to close the album is what made this one for me. Sounds like classic Cure with a nice mix of pop and goth.
It’s a Spring 3 and a Fall 4 so sadly I’m rating it in Spring

Sounded like a 90’s album by the who were their way out of their prime and trying to do new shit that just doesn’t work.
I was hoping forked from this one cuz the description was saying it was the teardrop explodes frontman maturing as a songwriter but it just sounded like him slowing down. Like literally, the songs were all mid tempo and didn’t have the charm of the tight sounding new wave music from his past band.
Some of the instrumentals were good but his singing sucked so bad on this album

Was a little disappointed when I realized this was all covers cuz I was hoping this would introduce me to some oh Willie Nelson’s music but this was still a very pleasant listen. He also made all of the songs sound like his own too and I liked his mix of jazz and country guitar playing.
Not much to say on this one besides it’s great to thrown on and relax too on a nice day.
Actually, one flaw I have with this isn’t even much of a flaw it’s just that no one could ever make a version of Georgia on my mind that comes close to Ray Charles’ version.

Adele
Little bit more pop than 21 and I think I preferred the more soulful sound of 21. The songs were all good but they just didn’t pack a punch as much as the ones off of 21.
Singing was all outstanding as always though. Adele could sing basically anything and make it sound good. I think part of what hurt this one personally is that when I lifeguarded as a teenager the people at our pool would always ask us to put on key 103 and that station play Send My Love ALL FUCKING DAY. I started that song and was like “you know maybe enough time has past cuz these verses sound pretty good” then the chorus came and I got flashbacks to yelling at annoying ass kids and their alcoholic, entitled ass parents.

White Blood Cells
The White Stripes
You could listen to this and Is This It and you’d have a pretty good understanding of the basis of all guitar music for the last 20 years. It’s crazy that those two albums came out in the same year cuz they are both so innovative. You can name a variety of influences on Jack White but there really isn’t a clear predecessor to this album. It’s where they found their sound and it was totally unique to them.
I love the roughness and energy to this album so much and how it combines two totally different genres of blues and punk. The drumming and lack of bass is what makes it so unique too cuz it’s very sparse instrumentally but that forces them to hit everything so much harder.
Little room is also one of my favorites of theirs cuz I think it perfectly sums up the goal of the white stripes. It’s about as stripped back as you can be and is singing about making music just for yourself. But I think the important point that it makes is that you don’t need the best gear, studio, or even a full band to make good music you just need to play it hard and mean it.

Still confused on how this made the list though. What was influential or great about it? It wasn’t bad but it’s a musician after his era of fame doing some easy listening tunes.

Also I remember talking to my dentist a few years ago about the pixies and this was his favorite album by them. Which would’ve made me think “wow this guy’s definitely a virgin” but he actually fucked my old dentist’s wife and now has kids with her.

I actually really like the strings on this one and how the guitar interacts with them. Pink moon is obviously great for how stripped back it is but this one is a really easy listen with the brighter sound.

London Calling
The Clash
Never Been a huge fan of the ska on this one but even those ones are still well written songs and with how great the rest of the songs are this album stays a 5 for me.
I still might like the first clash album a little more but this one is so influential and you can hear how songs like Spanish bombs and lost in the supermarket are still relevant in indie music today.
There’s still enough punk songs on it to make it fun but they moved forward a lot with this album and avoided the mistake that most punk bands make by trying to remain punk purists their whole career. After a while you almost sell out by not changing your music and the Clash solidified their legacy as one of the greatest punk bands by not releasing a punk album.
Also the drumming is great and let the songwriters move into new genres and sounds as a result of it.
Toss up between Spanish bombs and London calling as my favorite songs but I’m glad I relistened cuz there are a couple that I used to pass over that are awesome like I’m not down.

Wasn’t as good as I remember honestly but I think that had something to do with setting. It’s a great album on a chill rainy day but you gotta be in the mood for it.
I also think it’s a little top which may be why I remember it to be better than it was cuz pale blue eyes is one of my favorites songs ever.
I also respect the total change in direction they made. It’s a little similar to the clash’s third album with how both bands started as very rough and punk and rather than trying to keep pushing the limits on that style they go for a softer sound leaning more on songwriting. They keeps the first two album as more groundbreaking and important for their sound and also makes the band less one dimensional.

So late writing this but Smiths are an all time great band for me and this is their songwriting at its best. Johnny marr has so many classic riffs on this one and is at his peak of writing instrumentals. Morrisey also has a ton of highs on this album with lyrics like There is a light. That one in particular is super nostalgic to me and has been an important one for me since high school.
The boy with the thorn in his side and cemetry gates are probably my other two favorites on this one and have such a unique and bright sound compared to anything else at the time.

Theres really no legit complaints you can have on this album. Yeah the first half has been overplayed to hell but that’s because it’s all classics.
The back half really makes the album for me too. The drumming on the faster songs is insane and Dave Grohl might be my favorite drummer. Idgaf about technicality or any bullshit like that when it comes to drumming you just gotta have good energy that fits the song and grohl does exactly that on every song.
Kurt Cobain also wrote so many great melodies on here too but the main take away from this album is just how much energy and passion went into the songs by all three members.

I thought this was gonna be some boomer nonsense after the first song but I actually liked this one a good bit.
Obviously his voice is an acquired taste but I was able to get past it and enjoy it on some songs.
I think the songs that hit the hardest for me are the ones like leaving the table and treaty that give off a feeling of surrender and acceptance of your life despite regrets and shortcomings that’s very haunting coming from an artist near his death.

This one isn’t usually my go to zeppelin album but still is a great album and is a clear step forward in their progression as a band.
Immigrant song is the best hard rock song ever in my opinion so it starts off with a banger. Celebration day and out on the tiles are two that I haven’t heard much but we’re kinda fire too.
Since I’ve been loving you is another Led Zeppelin staple and highlights how good the band is at making dynamic solos and not just blistering fast shredding.
I wish they didn’t split the album into a mainly electric front half and acoustic back half cuz I like all of the back half but definitely prefer the energy of the first. I do like the folky-ness if the acoustic ones though and they only get better on the next album.

Been enjoying Neil Young’s music a lot lately. I think something I missed the first time I heard this album or whole listening to him previously was that he is has a very rock n roll vibe to his music that is overlooked cuz he’s thought of as an acoustic songwriter usually.
