Really enjoyed this album and I can't believe I'd not heard it yet! Probs 4 stars
I don't really like classic American rock! The best part of this was The Kinks cover
It’s Bowie! There so much of him! But it’s good. I like this
Genuinely up there as a modern masterpiece for. Absolutely incredible album
Its The Beatles! I know they are good! But also I listen to them and I feel bored
But then Can't By Me Love comes on and holy moly I get it. (this will happen with every Beatles album. I don't think they are an album artist)
I think The Soulaquarians are probably the most important group of musicians of the 90s and 00s, this is so good
God this is a lot of DnB for a Saturday morning. I probably need to revisit this more in the mood. I can see the influence which always bumps ratings up for me, but not my sort of thing
What an absolutely weird album. The Police are a singles band for me and of course I know Every Breath You Take but to have it mashed into all these other really interesting tracks... Wow.
Good stuff.
I liked bits of this! Its nice also to have a name to this sort of sound with Qawalli
Generational voice, never actually sat down and listened to him as a full album artist. Really special
Completely incredible. Cash's voice is divine, the humour between songs and the honesty of the prison system. Wow wow wow.
Dire Straits are the classic rock band I really gel with and have been for all my life. Potentially a nostalgia thing but god Knopfler’s guitar is just a joy on every track
I was so ready to dislike this as
a) 90s rock bothers me
b) its two hours long
c) its Billy Corgen singing for two hours
Eating humble pie. The highs on this album are incredible, I know the big ones but tracks like Galapogos and Thru The Eyes of Ruby are new discoveries that I just adored. It sprawls out over you and makes you take notice, it feels like a jungle that you hunt for the view from the top. Magic.
After yesterday I thought I would have to start reconsidering my 90s music dislike.
No I'm still correct. GOD I'm so bored. (Why Does It Always Rain On Me slaps, and I quite liked Slide Show)
Krieger’s guitar tone is one of my favourite noises in music and Morrison’s voice is iconic. Deserves the praise and then you get to The End and it’s this gorgeously big track that drives forward for the run time. Gives it an entire extra star.
Appallingly boring in scope, lyricism and musicality. I’m trying to give it a fair listen but I just want to listen to anything else
You finish Side 1 and think “damn this is a great album”
Then Side 2 opens with Isn’t She Lovely and it becomes one of the greatest album of all time.
I'm not really sure why this is in this list? Its not exactly anything exciting, and that Heaven cover is really quite bad?
Hucknall's voice however is so good he needs to be on a house track.
Is this the best album ever? No not really, but I still enjoyed it! Treason is that song!?
Obviously I think you can track the soundscape in British music from this new wave / post punk sound into the Britpop era of the 90s... but I have to ask why they moved so far away from this. This feels interesting.
Guitars sound thick and dirty which I like, but I find Iggy gets lost over the top.
Real good album. Weird and trippy, all the stuff I like about The Cure
This is what I wanted from this challenge. I know how important Kraftwerk and this album is, but I never think “I should listen to this” so it’s just unlistened to me
Holy shit. Just fantastic electronic music that you can let soundtrack your life in what you’re doing.
This started out great and then it kinda faded for me? I love Ian Curtis's voice throughout though but ended a little samey.
For some reason I expected this to be quite bad, apart from Band on the Run (banger)
I had a banging time with this! Mrs Vanderbilt slips! Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five is a great closer! This might be my favourite Beatles/Beatles adjacent album I've heard in my life
Started out annoyed by this, really grew on me as it went and was taken on a journey. Finished too early for me to fully love it though.
A relief to have a different genre then the past few days of various rock outings
Technically this is great. Dre’s production over Eminem’s flow is just so good, but I only really knew My Name Is and Guilty Conscience going into it
I’ve had zero solo women in my list so far, and I feel getting this album before that is just rubbing it in my face. The misogyny and glee in the violence is properly off putting. I don't feel I'm in on whatever joke this is.
Immigrant Song kicks this off in the best fashion, but I was somewhat dreading an hour of that sound as I've never really gelled with Led Zepp beyond that
I was wrong! This is a good album, with some gorgeous highs and lows and flow, with some tender moments backed up by 4 clearly super talented individuals. That's The Way a real highlight
The technicality on display on the guitars is great
But I always feel I’m missing something slightly with metal. It doesn’t move me in the way other genres do.
At points my favourite band ever. I think Eno in their latter albums makes them excel, but the rough edges and sounds here are just SO great.
Don't Worry About The Government is one of my fave Byrne tracks, especially off American Utopia. On this it sounds scared but hopeful. Solo it sounds weary and full of worry. An evolution of a song through politics.
Also Psycho Killer exists. Imagine writing that song! Just incredible stuff
This was a perfectly pleasant album that I’d have on in the background, after getting exciting about hearing Tiny Dancer
This was really not good and then I got to The Colony of Slippermen
This is abysmal.
The bass in this is great, but the album as a whole is slightly forgettable, I keep waiting for a big song but it never comes.
I think The White Stripes were always a couple of years out from when I really got into music, so this is a joy of a new listen to me. Jack’s voice is so layered to me, the instrumentalism is fascinating
Oh it turns out I love The Pogues? This is an absolute riot and Shane’s voice drawling over the top is just something special.
Enjoyable when working out, but perhaps not quite in the mindset for it.
My judgement on chanson music is "How much do I want to smoke a cigarette during?"
I would've maybe had two to this? But slowly and maybe with a French 75 cocktail. Enjoyed!
Longest yeahh boiiiiiii.mp3
So so great. The opening 3 tracks are just sheer excellence and the rest just builds to Heart of Glass and you're like... damn.
Debbie Harry. Unreal woman.
There’s a level of introspection on this album that from his debut that is interesting
But Eminem continues to be homophobic and misogynistic in a way that is just uncomfortable.
Probs my fave band, audibly cheered when I saw this popped up this morning.
I adore this album, Matt's lyricism is as close to poetry as you can get in music for me, and its coupled with this gorgeously rich baritone. He's so evocative especially on England and Conversation 16. The Dessner's back him up with both incredible production and guitars, whole Bryan thumps the tracks on with drums when needed.
It's indie, it's hipster, its peak Pitchfork wankfest. It's fucking great.
Completely fine, and I enjoyed the slightly more melodic tracks. Also credit Halford for being an openly gay man in this genre.
Jazz baby jazz
Pretty good! Not my usual genre but I enjoyed it
Some of these lyrics are absolute clunkers and its just so boring.
Interesting stuff. You can kinda tell he was about to go into his Ambient era, and he's really trying things out. Not quite for me but respect the attempt.
Just a buzz that you get from these albums. Fun, raucous and you’re never sure where the next bar goes. Good stuff.
Oh great an American punk album, fine whatever
I should never judge an album by its genre! The moment the Blues guitar kicked in I was fully on board. This is so fun, what a great blending of genres.
Half my favourite bands are probably going to have this as an inspiration and I get why, although I think modern stuff has evolved it.
You’ve got shoegaze, art pop, multi instrumental all layered below a really effective vocal. Really liked it.
I was expecting to enjoy this more if I’m honest! Still good but No Sleep and Fight really carry this album. Enjoyed Girls though!
So it’s not Songs In The Key of Life but like, still bloody great
I just don’t get Bjork. I appreciate the influence but I rarely run back to a track apart from Big Time Sensuality
Pagan Poetry though is magic.
Preferred Melon Collie but had a good time with this! Smashing Pumpkins - good!
"Yeah its Nevermind, it's fine" kinda forgetting how stacked this album is.
Unreally stacked. So cohesive. One of those classic albums that deserves the hype and history.
Terrified tomorrow is going to pop up Blackstar and I'm in for the double.
This is a really beautiful. Treaty especially.
Refuse to believe this has had more influence on music than any Lady Gaga album
Oh and then we get a f slur?! Nah fuck this.
I loved this! Really was trying stuff and seeing what flowed and sounded good in the sound scape. Really great.
Extremely impressive when you know the story behind it, overall just very very good.
God this was just an hour of tedious noise
I do quite like new wave but this didn't grip me as much as I was expecting?
It is good and I appreciate it for that, but Bruce has never really moved me apart from the big tracks.
Enjoyed this more than I expected too, and John Peel had a point about Teenage Kicks.
This was really great focus and background music. It tried something and it just really sat with me
Really really liked this. Long Time Gone just a real home run
Perhaps this is because this is the first genuine female popstar I've had on this list, perhaps its because its one of the greatest comebacks in pop, perhaps her voice is just one of the best we've ever had.
It's five stars. Any album whose title track is that good is five stars.
Generational talent. Everything that’s been said about her has been said before, everything about this album is so wonderful.
Case of You just spectacular
This started out so fun, Personal Jesus is so so great, then it just kinda faded into sameyness?
When I say I like shoegaze, I really mean I like Slowdive
I do really like shoegaze based on this
Just a joy of an album from front to back I don’t really have any more words. My fave.
This was fine? There’s some great tracks
This didn’t really do anything for me? I dunno. Just a bit… dull? Maybe not in the mood.
One of those ones where I know it’s good, but just didn’t take me anywhere
This really grew on me as an album and frankly ending on Constant Craving bumps it up half a star.
I didn’t dislike this as much as I expected.
I mean I doubt I go back and listen but hey it was trying something.
This was really enjoyable
Probs a bit of nostalgia for me, but its such a great piece of rock imo. Hysteric especially this beautifully echoing track that lingers in the air. Karen O's voice is so gorgeous.
I thought this would be heavy metal I don't dig but actually this was quite a good listen? You can tell all the influence it had on grunge, so a star for that.
RIP Prince you'd have loved singing horny songs with Sabrina Carpenter.
Really enjoyed this. The title track is properly thick and full of talent. What a great discovery for me.
This was released the same day as Definitely, Maybe and the world decided Oasis was the band to fall in love with?
No. Absolutely not. What is wrong with Britain.
