There’s so much gems outside of them. Need to dig deeper their discography. On Father to Son, Brian May sounds like Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. Also, love that many songs on this album leap into the next one. It’s like listening to a long progressive rock album. 4/5. Really fun and good listen.

There’s better albums in the 50’s than this one. Glad I’ve listened to it though. But it’ll probably the last time. 2/5

To me, And Justice for All, along with Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning, is the golden run of Metallica in terms of trash metal. Love kill ‘em all as well, but those three are something else. Strong 4/5, will definitely stay in my rotation.

Problem is, I’m from that generation when it came out, and it was all over the place. Even today, Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are still heavily played. There’s a couple of songs that reminds me of the old Green Day, like She’s a Rebel and Letterbomb. Don’t get me wrong, that’s a solid album, but the second half isn’t as good as the first. 4/5. Been a while since I’ve listened to it, but probably my next listen will be in a while too.

Besides Kashmir, this is really the first time listening to Physical Graffiti. As a two-discs album, it’s a pretty long one, clocking at 82 minutes, and at the end of it, I don’t know what to think about it. It’s clearly not as their I-IV run, which is I think is the best run by Zep. Many people have high praise for this album, but for me, it doesn’t strike as hard as the first four. They are in another direction, trying new sounds, arrangements. It has hard rock, prog rock and folk elements and it’s the first album with their new record company, Swan Song, after their run with Atlantic. It was a different type of listening experience for me. I’ve listened to it twice in a row, because it was a bit of a surprise at first, I didn’t know what to think. Kashmir is definitely the staple song, no question here, but there’s other gems, like Ten Years Gone and the Wanton Song, the closest to the early-Zep on this album. I can’t put 5 stars like many of the critics out there (and I’m not pretending to be one either), but it’s still a strong release for the British gang. 3,5/5, but I put 3 instead of 4 because I have more songs below the 3,5 threshold than above. It doesn’t grow on me. Maybe after a couple more spins, it can go up to a 4. It was a bit too noisy for me. I know it’s the grunge era and it was the trademark back then, but I didn’t enjoy it as much. I don’t have much more to say about it. 3/5. Slight chance, except for Dirty Boots and Kool thing, I will listen to it again, and probably gave a higher note. I’m very used to CCR, it’s one of my dad’s favorite band. I was introduced very young to Cosmo’s Factory, so I’m familiar with some of the songs, like Bad Moon Rising and Lodi. I love that southern rock vibe with CCR, and on Green River, it’s very up front. But even though there’s some solid songs in there, I think it’s not consistent. Low 4/5. Good album, but there’s some fillers in my opinion. The fun part with that list is there many albums that I know nothing about, like Don’t Stand Me Down by the Dexys Midnight Runners. My listen was a bit conflicted. I understand the buzz around, the fact that it was overlooked, and then rediscovered, but for me, it didn’t stick with me. I had difficulty with Kevin Rowland’s voice on the album. I love him more in short songs like Come on Eileen (which I didn’t know it was them), because in this album, only 2 songs were shorter, with That’s What She’s Like leading the way with a whooping 12:23. I don’t know, it was listenable, but it’s probably the only time I will listen to it. 2/5. Sometimes, the thrill of discovering a favorite artist or song was there only at the beginning, but fade away rapidly. The Charlatans is another one of those bands I knew songs without knowing that it was them. When the first chords of With No Shoes came in, I told myself : « Hey, I know this one! » The first third of this album is very good, but the more I listen to it, the more I had the impression that it sounds too much like Oasis. The Brit pop in that era turned around very much around the Gallagher’s band, and I thought that the Charlatans tried to ride that wave with Tellin’ Stories. Did they were able to do it? I think so, but the more you are of the end of the album, the more it loose momentum. 3/5. Some songs might end up in a rotation. I’m pretty sure that when it came out, it was a hit. But the thing, for me, with English punk rock band in the late 70’s and early 80’s is that it doesn’t aged well for many of them. The production isn’t great. Songs sound pretty much the same. There’s no wow moment in it. Still, decent listen, but I will stick with London Calling. 2/5. Oh Neil, our national treasure. I haven’t dig enough his discography. Glad the challenge gave me a chance to listen to After the Gold Rush. I’ve listened to it twice before giving may rating, because I wasn’t sure if I paid enough attention the first time. And I didn’t, in a good way. I changed a couple of ratings up, and told I love a bit more a rock/folk Young than a stripped down Young like on Harvest. 4/5. Definitely an album I need to have in physical. The more I dip my toes into jazz, the more I seems to like it. That album from Dave Brubeck is a classic. Time out is probably one of the most recognizable piece of jazz. But unlike Kind of Blue, it lack a bit on the second half. First three songs is great but after, it’s good. 4/5. Classic album. Will be in my rotation. I know that Rid of Me was critically acclaimed, and for cause: it’s raw, grungy, aggressive, left-field and doesn’t follow guidelines, which usually, critics loved. But for me? It wasn’t. Besides the grungy part, which I loved, all the rest was tough. I thought it was noisy, deconstructed and everything was scattered in every direction. 2/5. Rough listen for me. I understand what the album is, but definitely not for me. Won’t listen again. I looooove Earth, Wind, and Fire. Even though my bread and butter is prof metal, disco (thanks to my father) have a special place in my heart. So obviously, there was a lot of EWF in the house. That’s a Way of the World wasn’t an album I know much. I’ve in a past listened to it one time, but that’s probably it. First half is very good, but the second half is ok at best. Lots of experimentation on that album. I’ll give a 3/5. Not my first choice for a EWF album. The Doors are a kind of hit or miss band for me. Sometimes, I think they are great, and other times not. But that first album is a good one. There’s definitely some bangers in there. Definitely a good listen and some of the songs will be on my rotation. 4/5. First hip-hop album on my journey! Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor is my first album into his discography. It a very long album, clocking at 1h12, and I think it’s one of its flaws. Maybe some song are fillers, or it doesn’t need an intro and an outro, to cut some minutes. Overall, that’s a good listen. Sometimes his flows looks like Logic (even his beats). I didn’t have a wow moment, but that doesn’t mean the album is bad. 3/5. Some songs will be in my rotation. What a way to start Straight Out of Compton by N.W.A with the title track and FTP. But after that, it gets harder to keep the pace. Express Yourself reminds me of playing THPS, but the second half can’t hit as hard as the first. Low 3/5. But the title track is maybe one of the greatest entry song of that decade. I was very intrigued with the album cover and the year it came out. To my surprise, it wasn’t the kind of music I thought I would discover. It was a very enjoyable listen. A blend of plenty of styles, with some orchestrations. Acoustic guitar is very present (love it by the way), some bits of folk, psych. Is it an album I will going back? No. But that not means that it’s bad. Just happy I listened to it. If the album was like Bummer in the Summer, that would be in heavy rotation. 3.5/5. First live album (well technically it was a live album, but the guys dubbed it in the studio after), and already 2nd album of Neil Young on that challenge. Just like the previous one, this release is good. Love Neil, his voice, his melodies. It’s a really short album and that’s a plus. Since he published so many songs, some of them are forgettable, but some are anthems. 4/5. Another solid album from the Canadian artist. Groundbreaking album and essential for rock and roll, the debut album of Little Richard is a must listen to understand the shift in the 50’s from the crooners to rock’n’roll. Even though I think it’s a bit repetitive, Tutti Frutti and Long Tail Sally are massive hits. You can see the shift with the vocals, the fast-paced saxophone. It was a nice 30 minutes. 3/5. Always cool to hear those precursors before the birth of a genre. Typical Girls is a good song, and I understand why riot grrrl movement starts with them, and without the Slits, we wouldn’t have bands like Bikini Kill, but oof. Not a painful listen, but clearly not for me. The blend of reggae and post-punk is not something I was expected, and in a sense I didn’t like it. Typical Girl is the only “punk” song of the album, and their best by a mile. 1/5. Won’t listen again. For me, there’s no wow songs on Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, but one thing that album has and some on others albums I’ve listened to since the beginning of the challenge don’t, it’s there’s no bad ones either. It’s an album that was consistent from beginning to end. 3/5. Kid A is good, but it’s definitely not my favorite Radiohead album. A bit too experimental to me, I love them more on the rockier side. Excellent album on a late night or on a rainy day. Besides the title track, which is one of my favorite Sinatra’s songs, all the rest is good, it’s very enjoyable. It’s maybe a bit too long for that kind of album and mood. Could be 2-3 songs shorter, but nonetheless, it’s a very good listening session. 4/5. Even though tracks at the end isn’t as good as the first half and I have more 3’s than 4’s and 5’s, in its entirety, the flow is very good. So individually, it’s a 3, but if you have it on vinyl, you can enjoyed it more, it’s a 4. That wave of British pop in the late 90’s and early 00’s is the best. What’s The Story Morning Glory is definitely a part of it. Is it my favorite Oasis album? I’m not sure. First time hearing a full Outkast album. Unfortunately for Stankonia, I knew all of my favorite songs on that album. Does it make it a bad album? No. It’s a middle of the road for me. Very good listen for the Downward Spiral. It’s very like a concept album. It’s dark, eclectic and Trent Reznor mastered the atmosphere. But, this album is way better listening in a whole sitting instead of picking songs. They were placed in an order that flows very well, but individually, except for Closer, they loose that edge a bit. 4/5. Someone will probably throwing rocks at me, but even though it’s not a harsh listen, I don’t enjoyed it either. Sunday morning was a good entrance, but some chords and the violin was rough sometimes. 2/5. The birth of trip-hop for many critics. You know that it’s embryonic, but it’s groundbreaking on the other hand. It was a cool listen. There’s some really good songs on that record for sure. 3/5. One of the surprise so far on that challenge. I don’t know what to say about that record. It’s very rocky, and I like to think that sometimes it was improvised. Problem is, I don’t know if I like it or not. I was listening to it at work, and I wasn’t paying attention that much, so that’s a good sign, but I wasn’t looking around because there was a good riff as well. I think on the end, there’s good flashes, but not enough to really appreciate it. 2/5.
