Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Blur
4/5
ok, heard some of these before as classics. a bit yobby
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
spoken word, poppy, hard to get into at first but quite liked overall
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
i mean it's rumours, i already like it and would probably have it in my top 50 albums of all time, one of those albums you can listen to anytime
CHIC
3/5
not bad, pretty old sk00l funky thing, imo 'le freak' doesn't actually fit with the album too much and is arguably it's worst song (holy shit the album version is 5:30 long, it gets old by two minutes in)
fav track: happy man
Metallica
5/5
the first of the "new metallica" after Cliff's death, don't like it as much as MoP / RtL but it's a good album!
fave track: eye of the beholder
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
maybe i was simply not in the mood but this is just noise and wailing. at least the instrumentals dont suck
least bad song: jackie wilson said
Patti Smith
3/5
> female vocals
> i simp
> but it's spoken word
> mfw
fav track: free money
The Pretty Things
3/5
when was this made ah yes the 60s makes perfect sense
trippier than expected but honestly, no amount of drugs would carry this fairly mediocre album. im sure it was good for its time
fave track: balloon burning (sounds like an ancient king gizz song)
Pavement
2/5
ehhhh
this is the album equivalent of a weetabix served with lukewarm tap water
Jeff Buckley
4/5
the man can sing and carries this album. some of the instrumentals are a little bland. if i listened to this 5 times it might become a 5.
fav song: dream brother
The Birthday Party
1/5
whoever decided this album was a good idea should "blast off".
it's the sort of music you would hear in a movie when the protag walks into a seedy dive bar to help you get the vibe for how shit the place is
some of the instrumentals are decent but, it's too little too late. im sure in the 80s this was good, its not good now.
Underworld
4/5
a really nice house(?)/techno(?)/??? record. a pleasure to listen to.
sick drums.
maybe a little too vocal for my tastes and it loses a bit of its punch towards the second half.
fav track: Banstyle
also, going by the vocals from "pearl's girl" this is the band that did "born slippy" as famous from trainspotting
Stereolab
4/5
starts off funky. sounds like music from "the sims" at times (especially Percolator)
I was sad when the album finished as I wouldn't mind more.
Portishead
2/5
OVERRATED, 2.5 from me
don't @ me
yes it has some bops. yes it invented trip hop. it's not that good an album
fav track: strangers
Bob Dylan
3/5
very inoffensive, struggle to find anything wrong with it but at the same time, it doesn't really impress?
Joan Armatrading
3/5
fine, song writy stuff
Hugh Masekela
3/5
funky. some tracks go on a bit, but overall enjoyable. (3.5)
Sex Pistols
4/5
luv me punk
it's a classic alert. definitely an album that started a lot and still holds up surprisingly well, while not sounding exactly modern it still sounds crisp, pleasanat and relevant.
not a daily driver but nice in a while
Wild Beasts
4/5
nice! reminds me kind of white lies. the vocal style is interesting especially having two very different singers
I thought the album didn't actually flow that well and felt a little disjointed.
fav track: all the kings men
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
reggae innit
did you know jamaica is running out of weed?
https://news.sky.com/story/jamaicas-marijuana-shortage-branded-a-cultural-embarrassment-12209752
Stevie Wonder
3/5
it was alright, nothing amazing but a pleasant listen. 2.5
Madness
1/5
I didn't manage to listen to the whole thing unfortunately
Living Colour
4/5
starts with cult of personality? yeah boiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
pretty decent, 3.5?
makes me want to play san andreas again
2/5
nothing offensive, but very forgettable?
Prince
4/5
i'm quite surprised by how much I liked this.
lots of tracks sound fresh and relevant which is impressive given this is nearly 40 years old.
funky, catchy, easy to listen to with a nice range of songs.
i could see it going up to a 5 with more listens
fav track: something in the water,
Moby Grape
3/5
i don't listen to much beatles, but this is what the beatles sound like in my head based on their image.
is this a beatles clone from the same time period or something innovative before their time?
2.5 - inoffensive, short and tolerable
Prince
3/5
not as good as the other prince album, but like with 1999 i could see this being a grower.
Duran Duran
4/5
bangers all round, nice to see where all these classics come from as i have heard many of the songs on this before.
i liked it a lot, i actually liked it so much i listened to it again. I think some of the songs would get old after time.
4.5
fav track: save a prayer
Steely Dan
4/5
i like it! jazzy, catchy rhythms, smooth.
Steely Dan
3/5
show biz kids was a bit annoying. sounds like a different record to the other steely dan one. (thanks jesse for pointing out it was the same band ...)
not bad, not great? 2.5
Bob Marley & The Wailers
2/5
the other bob marley seemed to sit better with me.
This was mostly wailing
The Charlatans
2/5
LJ would like this.
1.5
The Clash
4/5
short, punchy, catchy and rythmic tracks, just as you get into it a new track comes in.
sounds really clean (but i guess that's the remaster)
really enjoyable, can see why this punk thing caught on...
The Velvet Underground
3/5
id love this on a saturday afternoon. mellow and easy on the ears.
not a bad record, can't think of too much wrong with it. murder mystery was a bit much with the different voices
3.5
Frank Zappa
2/5
middle is good but tracks 1, 5 and 6 fucking suck
maybe if i was drunk it would sound better
The Specials
3/5
lighthearted fun, makes your head bob and some of the lyrics are surprisingly wholesome.
little weak towards the end (e.g 2much 2 young), solid 3.33 (recurring)
The Cramps
2/5
pretty average 2.5
Le Tigre
3/5
i like a few of the songs, but this really doesn't flow like an album should. it's more of a dodgy mixtape.
cannot give it more than a 3
TV On The Radio
2/5
i like the instrumentals quite a lot but the voice just really doesn't do it for me. It sounds like a budget "the national" but kind of fake and just not good?
a bunch of the songs sound familiar - definitely heard DLZ before (maybe on Mr Robot?)
ah, i looked it up and it's Breaking Bad • S2E10 from 2009, the 'stay out of my territory' scene :)
other than that one track i actually have very little desire to listen to this again even though i feel it could grow on me. 1.5
The Style Council
3/5
nice piano
mellow loungey jazz
variety of vocals is nice
some of the later tracks were a bit too bluesy? but i liked it
3.5
The Doors
3/5
not as good as some of their earlier stuff. lacks a bit of the magic / soul that they used to have. still a decent listen - 3.5?
Alice Cooper
3/5
alice's kind of 'theatre rock' is not everyday listening but the album is well polished and flows nicely.
i heard he's a lot of fun live
3.5
Waylon Jennings
4/5
light hearted, short and sweet. sounds a bit like johnny cash but it's all nashville country innit.
The Byrds
3/5
folky, alright but not very memorable?
the bonus tracks gave me deja vu
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
how many times can someone say nigga
the tracks with flying lotus / thundercat are groovy as fuck. some other tracks have their moments but ones like 'alright' drag the album down quite a bit.
it's also pretty long for a rap album.
Jerry Lee Lewis
1/5
manic piano, poor quality recording and crowds jeering?
no thanks, 1.5
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
eh some ok tracks but loses points for the "n word"
2.5
Morrissey
2/5
nice album cover lol
holy bland, on every song either the instrumentals or the vocals just let the song down. 2
Everything But The Girl
3/5
on the whole pleasant but it didn't seem to have much identity as an album. is this dnb? is it... trip hop?
i dunno?
3
Burning Spear
3/5
not that bad, some of the tracks are a bit of a slog to get through (slavery days) but some (jordan river) are actually good.
Black Flag
3/5
death grips samples hehe
cult album with very many references in later works by other artists.
not as good as sex pistols. 3.5
Missy Elliott
4/5
surprisingly enjoyable.
Magazine
3/5
real mixed feelings on this, sometimes there are cacophonies, but some tracks (burst) are pretty good.
in fact, second half is a lot better i think.
Elvis Presley
3/5
2.5
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
unpleasantly long, not cohesive and just strange
Isaac Hayes
4/5
not bad, would probably listen to again
Nightmares On Wax
2/5
didn't really resonate with me, found it pretty dull.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
a bit weird, especially some of the lyrics. the instrumentals are fine, i like 'everybody knows'.
I think on the whole i like it, it's something different
Marvin Gaye
3/5
"romance" themed funk... marvin is pretty good but this album is a bit samey and goes on for too long.
David Bowie
3/5
bit of bowie, not his best, a bit kinky. but still decent.
3.5
Nirvana
5/5
CLASSIC ALERT
one of the first albums i regularly listened to, back in high school. (though i usually listened to my whole collection on shuffle)... anyway, i already know it quite well.
there is not really a bad track on this, some are overplayed sure (teen spirit) but the rest are relatively less known and very very good.
it's close to a 5....
Bob Dylan
2/5
eh
B.B. King
3/5
nice blues, shitty live version. even despite that it is good enough for a 3
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
's alright
PJ Harvey
1/5
my favourite part was when it fucking finished
Van Halen
3/5
sick guitar but just feels a bit dated at this point
Bauhaus
3/5
started off weird but i got into it. i think the vocals are a bit weak to get to a 4 but a couple of the tunes (x-ray eyes) are catchy
Neneh Cherry
2/5
needs to come with a trigger warning, the first track is the theme to "jamie's 15 minute meals"
pretty dated hiphop but fairly enjoyable
Deep Purple
4/5
fantastic example of 70's rock from the UK, some really classic tracks on here.
not a 5 but a dece 4
Terence Trent D'Arby
3/5
i dont think i listened to all of it in the end cos work got in the way, but it was some 80s, not that bad?
Nina Simone
3/5
like a bit of nina - this is fine.
Joy Division
2/5
it did not bring me much joy
Rush
4/5
i know this one :)
not a bad track on it, good variety, great instrumentals, unique style. tempted to 5 it
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
this made me see the light
really tight album with lots of pleasant elements
solid 4, nice
Slipknot
3/5
another one from raf's high school years (oh god)
i like vol3 from slipknot a bit more than this as a cohesive album, this has some good songs though.
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
i like some of their more recent stuff. this is actually pretty dated but some very solid electronic music.
not sure which genre to class this as, it's a bit all over the place but with a debut album i guess they didn't have a clear identity?
i like this but im not sure it tips into a 4
Method Man
4/5
i like wu tang, i like 36 chambers and this has more of the same method man aesthetic. a defining 90s hip hop album
Solomon Burke
3/5
its alright. sounds quite dated
The United States Of America
2/5
the first track (and the last) both gave me a major headache.
this has some potential in places but is otherwise unfortunately just onanistic 60s drivel. #boomerreview
Mercury Rev
4/5
not bad. reminds me of (the band) beach house
good vibes and a decent contender for another listen
Morrissey
2/5
monotone british man moans into microphone
Beth Orton
3/5
folky, some nice tunes and nice demonstrations of the singer's talent but at times it gets a bit screechy
reasonably pleasant to listen to but ultimately forgettable, none of the songs grabbed my attention and that is a shame
The Jesus And Mary Chain
3/5
warming and gentle, this was a pretty mellow record
nothing outstanding but very little to complain about, solid 3
Sly & The Family Stone
2/5
it was a 3 until space cowboy hit
funky music but the vocals dont really do it for me
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
i know this one :)
this is one of the best hip-hop albums of all time, for me. it has a unique sound, great lyrics, terrific delivery, is catchy and never gets old.
the only criticism i have of it is that some of the skitty bits between the tracks are a bit over the top or dated, but its a very solid 4 for me
Sister Sledge
4/5
holy moly this album has a lot of banging singles on it, to be honest i had no idea this is where they came from and that these were all from the same band.
very decent blend of r&b / disco that i will almost definitely listen to again (even if as singles..)
Public Enemy
3/5
this is not too bad, the tracks are alright and it flows fairly well, would need a few more listens and maybe its get a 4?
Neil Young
4/5
this was actually, fairly epic. very solid very pretty tracks.
i have heard of this record and a few of the songs before.
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
MUCORE ALERT
decent album, pioneered its genre, inspired billions, yadda yadda
i do find it a little bit grating and not something i want to listen to often but it's a damn good album
Rufus Wainwright
3/5
not too bad, some tracks reminded me of muse, others of radiohead.
however it fell a bit flat
Arcade Fire
1/5
boring and annoying indie drivel
The Dictators
3/5
some recognizable tracks, nice beachy rocky punky number. 3.5 from me
Depeche Mode
4/5
didnt realise this album was so recent. love depeche but have not listened to a full album, only singles.
this is really good, strong 4.5
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
3/5
some of his later stuff is a bit better (Runnin' Down A Dream)
but this is still alright
5/5
classic alert :)
i like this a lot
very strong opening track
one of my favourite uni memories is when suffragette city got played at crash and me and another guy were rocking out to it :D
i think its a 5 because you can put this on anytime and i will be in the mood for it, and it will make me smile
Drive-By Truckers
2/5
Count Basie & His Orchestra
4/5
really solid actually
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
nah
R.E.M.
3/5
pretty good, like a strong 3? no strong identity but inoffensive and alright
im running out of vocab for the reviews, can you tell
The Fall
3/5
fairly enjoyable, nice cover on track 2 (thanks Jesse)
3
Dusty Springfield
3/5
i enjoyed it more than i thought i would. i assumed it was country but was actually some pretty clean (if cheesy) pop
Rage Against The Machine
4/5
i know this one. maybe its nostalgia bias...
gets a solid 4, a couple of the tracks are weak. drumming bass and tom morellos guitar all have some very iconic riffs on this one. a groover with strong lyrics, whats not to like
Shack
3/5
pretty good actually, closing track was unexpected and great
I don't think there is anything that exciting to have me come back so gets a 3
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
a pretty decent album but a bit gritty, not the best the chillis have to offer. strong 3
Jethro Tull
4/5
i knew a couple of singles from this (aqualung and locomotive breath). really strong prog record that i thoroughly enjoyed
LL Cool J
3/5
slow paced but pretty decent rapping and flows.
however some of the beats get repetitive quickly
also there are quite a few moments in this that are sampled by other artists, i think
i liked the cereal one.
average 3 i think, its just a bit too dated
Shuggie Otis
3/5
pretty nice actually, strawberry letter was either sampled or ripped off in the song 'ms jackson' - its so similar.
doesnt quite earn a 4
James Brown
2/5
"For most of his career, Brown had a strict drug- and alcohol-free policy for any member in his entourage, including band members, and would fire people who disobeyed orders, particularly those who used or abused drugs"
and then he ends up having a drug addiction using PCP and coke... he also beat his wife with a metal pipe
anyway, apparently this is rolling stone's best live album of all time
we all know where we stand with live albums so it's a 2 from me.
George Jones
2/5
im gonna give him a 2 because its country and he doesnt seem to be able to write a song longer than 2 mins
a bit too lovey dovey
Common
3/5
decent, nice lyrics, nice beats. a bit long
Deep Purple
4/5
i like a bit of deep purple (see previous review? :D )
banging solos, album goes quite hard
good stuff
Aretha Franklin
3/5
ended up enjoying this more than i thought i would.
Badly Drawn Boy
3/5
surprisingly good, but not really memorable enough
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
good, i mean classic singles but the rest is fairly standard, soft 3
Eric Clapton
3/5
funky, fine, nice marley cover... would have on in the background in the morning
Hole
4/5
i actually really liked this, decent variety, nice vocals. lots of catchy and fairly unique songs. decent, genre maybe not the most interesting but a nice album overall
Queens of the Stone Age
3/5
decent as a debut, but their later work refines their style into something truly special.
this record is pretty mediocre, though it's nice to see a blend of their kyuss desert rock roots and what would later become their signature style. 2.5
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
It was fine and that's pretty much what I have to say about that
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
I've listened to this before i think. Expectations is a classic. some clever lyrics, creative instrumentals. good stuff
Cocteau Twins
4/5
It's a little quirky 'holds up spork' but damn I liked this album
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
sometimes this kind of new wave music goes too far and just doesnt sound good. i think unfortunately this is one of those times although there are enough redeeming moments to drag it up to a 3
The The
2/5
a bit weird, 80s poppy arty farty shit
Blondie
4/5
has some classics bunged on it, really decent pop album of the time.
Mike Oldfield
3/5
sounds better on vinyl (alex has a copy)
i like it but its a little long and the second half is not as good as the first.
3/5
BECAUSE MAYBEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
my attention span might be bad because i ekep saying this but first half was better than 2nd.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
4/5
i was expecting a bit more new-wave shittyness but this was fairly good.
relax has been ruined as a song by the movie 'zoolander' but on the whole this was a 3.5, round up to 4
Faust
3/5
mmmm kraut
good opener and some nice ideas but not that great
Kid Rock
2/5
story time: i know the opening track well because it's used in the final scene of the pilot for 'the shield', a US cop show we watched in GCSE media.
it's a really good sequence and a very good show
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61Pt5GYsx_w
anyway the album is kinda bad
The Doors
4/5
nice bit of doors, classic sound
light 4
JAY Z
3/5
jayz's style is pretty well defined and this follows that BLUEPRINT HAH
it's alright, would have to be in the mood to appreciate it
Kate Bush
4/5
good!
Traffic
3/5
some nice listening but quite short and it doesn't really do anything novel. a strong 3
Gene Clark
3/5
surprisingly good for country style music, solid 3
Rod Stewart
2/5
better than rod solo
actually enjoyed 3/5
Ice Cube
2/5
i dont mind ice but this album doesn't really do it for me
a bit long and a lot of the flows are just a bit janky
Manic Street Preachers
2/5
aside from track 2 which is a banger, this seems like britpop past its prime.
The Stooges
4/5
was way better than i thought it would be
punchy catchy short and sweet
penetratiooooooooooooooon
Louis Prima
4/5
just a gigolo
but good, upbeat, gets ya moving
Saint Etienne
3/5
some nice ideas, some fail quite hard for me. no incentive to listen to again
Leonard Cohen
3/5
a little monotone and pretty gentle singer songwriter, but clever lyricism keeps it afloat at 3
Sebadoh
1/5
this is really really bad
i made it to track 10
it all sounds out of tune
none of the vocals or instruments sound good
random song writing
surely not just me?
a-ha
4/5
peak 80s
catchy, all round pleasing
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Germs
3/5
maybe it is the first hardcore punk album but, it's not incredible. cool sound though.
also, produced by joan jett :D
gets a 2.5 generously rounded to 3
The Pharcyde
3/5
pretty enjoyable, i definitely had low expectations going into this one.
all good though, solid 3.5
Miles Davis
4/5
pretty good, got godspeed vibes in a way. nice jazz
The Byrds
2/5
another half arsed listen from me, some generic rocky number? not impressed
Killing Joke
2/5
tinny, warbly and generally just strange?
1.5
Talking Heads
4/5
should now have time to properly review things again
some classic tunes, massive /mu/core album that i have listened to once or twice before
i think this lives up to the hype, its a pretty good album for 1980, interesting instrumentals and vocals that very from track to track.
sort of reminds of frankie goes to hollywood
fav track: born under punches
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
quite interesting, i would listen to this again. though the latter 2 tracks are not as good
David Bowie
3/5
quite a funky, mellow sound but somehow missing some of the bowie charm that his other records (and vocal performances) typically have
XTC
3/5
damn, when i saw XTC i got excited this would be electronic music. :(
i did like it though, good variety and pretty good stuff. its like, a strong 3?
Pixies
4/5
nice art
i liked this, very clean rock / punk record.
fave tracks:
something about you, broken face
Sparks
2/5
i wanted to like this, first track was good
but it was just boring after about track 4
maybe it's the mix or just the vocals that are so flat at times
Ali Farka Touré
4/5
what a BANGA
you must be a SOYA eater if you dont like this record and BETO get a better music taste!
this is pretty unique, i like this way more than the recent african record. has some real good groove and character to it, nice melodies.
Björk
2/5
i think i like the concept of bjork
vocals are good, songs are definitely not lacking in variety
just the whole thing seems a little bit disjointed and doesnt fit as an album. 2.5
John Coltrane
3/5
some jazz!
i like the drumming on pt3
other than that... it is jazz!
The Stooges
2/5
found this fairly dull, some nice guitar work and good to know where iggy pop came from but he should stick to insurance adverts.
2.5
Incubus
4/5
i do quite like this, got a soft spot for this kinda era nu metal / alt rock. heard of the name before
this is kinda linkin park meets deftones and i definitely fuckg with that
Todd Rundgren
3/5
some pretty bog standard poprock psych?
forgettable, 2.5
The Doors
5/5
i ummed and aarrd about this, but there is not a bad track on this record, its one ive listened to for years and it is just fantastic.
Paul Simon
2/5
kinda mediocre, the best tracks are a strong 3 at best.
it's a lite 2.5
X-Ray Spex
2/5
some decent ideas and a couple tracks stand up well.
the others however,.... posh british bints wail in a mic.
2.5?
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
pretty cool, couple of classics. but gets old quite quickly. 2.5
Country Joe & The Fish
3/5
kinda fine, though there is plenty of much more interesting psychadelia out there since.
Fred Neil
4/5
actually good!
trying to recall what i liked most about this, i think the instrumentals were interesting and i just really enjoyed it
George Michael
3/5
in one word?
sensual
not sure where i stand on this to be honest
"Sex is natural, sex is fun
Sex is best when it's, one on one"
The Who
1/5
this is a meme right?
Tortoise
4/5
some interesting ideas and sounds. so excited to see some post-rock!
first track has some... bits that sound like a toddler banging on pots and pans
interesting that this is only a year before F#A#inf
strong 4, i would listen to this again to get to know it better
Gotan Project
3/5
fucking dishwasher advert song.
also, zappa feature, nice.
starts of okay and the idea is good, spanish electronic thing but some tracks (santa maria) get quite repetetive.
some nice tracks that feel almost trip-hoppy at the end.
3.5, i dont think its quite captivating enough for a 4
Napalm Death
3/5
having 28 tracks in total is pretty interesting...
all in all not bad though, sound reminds me of slayer
Boston
4/5
funnily enough i just started playing san andreas again so i've heard smoking a few times ^^
pretty good album, not really a bad individual track on there even though the guitar tone gets a little stale, 3.99 recurring
Caetano Veloso
3/5
spanish, pleasant, forgettable
The Go-Betweens
2/5
2.5, some more indie rock from the 80s, yay...
Depeche Mode
3/5
Pretty good, I could see this going up to a 4 over time. Nice instrumentals.
Aerosmith
4/5
I actually really enjoyed this. Surprisingly so.
Joni Mitchell
2/5
canadian or not, i can't say that these vocals did much for me
Chicago
2/5
pretty mediocre, i like some of the sounds but this feels like a collection of 'eh' singles more than an album
im a man takes it down to 2
Talking Heads
3/5
album sounds a fair amount like 'remain in light', they have quite a characteristic sound and its generally enjoyable, but nothing that blows me away
Brian Eno
3/5
fuck, i saw brian eno and i got excited that we might get an ambient record (like airports or smth)
it wasn't bad, the last two tracks redeem this to a 3 (2.75?)
Gene Clark
2/5
fine, quite forgettable. would slot in fine in a playlist but you would never want to learn what any of the songs here are called because they are that bland. 2
Anita Baker
3/5
idk, i feel like this is a good album but its not something i would listen to. she has a great voice and the instrumentals are simple and just work.
but outside of hearing a single on the radio when would i reach for this off the shelf?
The Cure
3/5
has a good vibe overall but its not fantastic, the last track was quite bad
light 3
The Allman Brothers Band
2/5
ehh
Van Morrison
3/5
some smooth sunday tunes, pretty blase on this one
Stevie Wonder
2/5
a bit long and thats the main reason for the 2, some decent soul otherwise
Tori Amos
3/5
i can see why this is critically acclaimed, although one of the best albums of all time? dunno about that
strong 3.5
Primal Scream
3/5
really all over the place but otherwise kinda good
strong 3?
Randy Newman
3/5
fine, forgettable, giving a 3 because it was very easy listening
Fairport Convention
3/5
i was going to just give this a light 2 and dismiss as generic flat folk you'd hear at the beer festival or something but this has it's moments.
still very vanilla though
The Crusaders
4/5
holy shit that was funky
Ice T
3/5
old school. fun!
Lorde
3/5
so i watched the hot ones with her recently, why does her singing not have an NZ accent?
doesn't even sound like her
also she's only 24?
looking at interviews she really changed between 2014 and 2017 (when this came out), almost like its not the same person
i dont mind the voice too much but sometimes she does this... idk what to call it, inflection? that im not a fan of.
some pretty good although bog standard poppy tunes with a gospel kinda vibe.
her (not yet out) album and the singles from it are much more compelling, this is more of a 'talentedish girl pumping out pop tunes with a slight unique angle'
Light 3
Pink Floyd
4/5
definitely a musical journey.
hard to score this one without listening to it 5+ times to really work out what to make of it, it is quite long. im erring on the side of 4 because theres a lot i want to go back to and listen and the album flows very well.
T. Rex
4/5
this was really good!
New Order
4/5
funky beats, a lot of these remind me of some retro video games. enjoyed the very 80s vocals,
strong 3.5
Love
2/5
bit like the beatles, not that exciting, might have some more appeal on another day but not keen to revisit
CHIC
4/5
late 70s bops
very nice album, songs past the banger opener were all up to scratch,
Lambchop
3/5
this is fine, a little bland but tolerable. surprised its only 2000, it sounds older. low 3
David Crosby
2/5
no thanks
N.W.A.
3/5
iconic, but a bit long and at the end of the day it is rap / hip-hop.
strong 3
Billie Holiday
3/5
nice sunday morning music? a bit too vocal, thats the main drawback. otherwise, pleasant lounge? light 3
The Waterboys
3/5
strong 3. reminds me a lot of flogging molly
Amy Winehouse
3/5
i appreciate that she had real singing talent, has some good songs. it's quite sad to listen to what she is singing about / going through.
Beyoncé
1/5
not for me
MGMT
4/5
i like 'little dark age' a lot, obviously ive heard the bops from this one but somehow never listened to the album.
it's really good, im a big fan of the vocals, the synths pack a punch on every track... what's not to like?
strong 4 that i could see myself growing on
Bee Gees
2/5
love ballad kinda thing, fairly luke warm on it. 2.5
KISS
2/5
theres better kiss albums (older ones) with better bops. this was eh
The Rolling Stones
4/5
banger to start and to end, pretty pleasant album in between. i suppose they had refined their sound well by this point.
production seems very good for '69, as far as i could tell this wasn't a remaster
"we all need someone we can cream on"
Eminem
4/5
I'm more of a 'the eminem show' guy (love that album) but this too is eminem at his best, delivering dark, emotionally powerful lines while maintaining his tongue in cheek humour.
all along a fast, aggressive and clean flow backed by excellent production? (produced by dr.dre btw)
strong 4
Radiohead
3/5
hmmm, i wasn't feeling this too much but 'house of cards', 'jigsaw..' made me rethink my scoring.
jigsaw is a very nice track. opener was not great.
I think in the right mood it could be a 4 but too much of a mishmash after 1 listen.
3
Paul Simon
2/5
pleasantish, kinda meh. nothing amazing
The White Stripes
2/5
this guys vocals are a bit whingey
Steve Earle
2/5
eh
Neil Young
3/5
pretty good, not as good as the other one from him we had. very pleasant though, nice beach vibes
Elvis Presley
2/5
man i could go for a decent hamburger
The Temptations
2/5
was excited for some soul but i cant remember a thing about this.
Tangerine Dream
4/5
nice electronic. Mysterious Semblance is a beautiful spacey track like something from a movie. Movements Of A Visionary has a 4tet like 'twinkle'.
will listen to again for sure
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
i quite liked this. fave track: Mausoleum
3.5
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
fun from cover to cover. maybe a bit too many drug lines?
Faith No More
2/5
pretty eh on this, i usually like this stuff but this seems like a bad version of korn?
some of the tracks were interesting in their own way, like the bass work on 'woodpecker from mars'
and i didn't enjoy the 'war pigs' cover, listened to original yday..
Bob Dylan
1/5
one iconic track followed by what feels like generic folky stuff. not impressed, harmonica gave me a headache.
Green Day
2/5
im not 14 anymore but this is tolerable
The Velvet Underground
3/5
thats fucking /mu/core
i dont get why this is so highly rated
David Holmes
2/5
caddell returns was good but quite a lot of the drumming and other instrumental pieces were repetetive, grinding and just annoying.
Elliott Smith
2/5
thats a lot of piano
overall this gets very bland quite quickly, though on first listen it wasnt so bad
Quicksilver Messenger Service
3/5
like a 2.5, some psych that i wasnt especially feeling today
Sugar
2/5
ew
so cookie cutter and boring, the instrumentals are flat, the singing is flat, whats the point?
i stopped at hoover dam on my first pass and came back to it later. I think 1 is too unfair but its not good
1.5
Bon Jovi
4/5
its bon jovi, full of classics, 3.5 round it up to 4.
good but not incredible. very wetherspoons album
Dwight Yoakam
3/5
i kinda zoned out during this. streets of bakersfield has an oktoberfest vibe
didnt mind this tbh
Mariah Carey
1/5
some of the songs are tolerable on their own but man i have zero desire to listen to this album ever again
Leonard Cohen
3/5
i feel like i should compare this to his other album we had on here, but i cant be bothered. this is fine, got a bit used to his voice... 2.5
Massive Attack
3/5
its ok, i found it a little bit slow and dull in places.
very 3
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
4/5
some good old school shit
scorpio was a bit janky but the rest is very good
i love my mother
Coldplay
4/5
hey this is pretty good
Aerosmith
3/5
probably good for its time, and so on, being 6 albums before pump. start was a little rough though i like the 'ac/dc' hard rock kinda feel.
pump was better though. 3.5
Pulp
4/5
going light 4 on this one, its a pretty good album with decent variety of songs
The Flaming Lips
3/5
i enjoyed this more towards the start. in the morning of the magicians, are you a hypnotist were some highlights. after that, the album started to trail off a little. 3.5
10cc
2/5
novel (liked clockwork creep) but... nothing to come back for.
4/5
to be honest they get a bad rep for the album that was preloaded onto apple gear but this album is really rather good, that 3 track opener is almost 5 worthy and the rest of the album takes their music in a few different directions. happy to give this a 4 and listen again
Keith Jarrett
3/5
thats a lot of piano. quite pleasant to listen to and decent backgrounder but not much more. 2.87
The Byrds
2/5
unrefined, uninspiring budget beatles?
Beastie Boys
3/5
cool debut. i suspect alex might like this one. I don't mind it being on, but its not especially my thing.
definite 3
The Flying Burrito Brothers
2/5
started off good, got kinda dull. 2.5
Tears For Fears
3/5
Bangers but inconsistent and it should be better.
The Stranglers
3/5
its very average, 2.5 rounded up to 3 since i appreciate some of the instrumentals and beachy vibes
R.E.M.
3/5
solid but the rest of the album doesnt live up to the 2 best tracks. 3.5
Frank Sinatra
3/5
sure is sinatra, classic sound. bit short. nothing to complain about, decent sunday music
The Sabres Of Paradise
3/5
i tend to quite like ambienty edm sort of things, but this felt like a generic movie or video game soundtrack with not much going for it.
shame, 2.51
Fugees
4/5
pretty well written and thought out album. hard like
Nick Drake
4/5
pretty good, nice voice, nice guitar, interesting songs, short and sweet.
Venom
4/5
fun album, not a 5 but a very solid 4
Hüsker Dü
2/5
i was gonna give this a 3 for being average... but then it "floated away". started giving me a headache just due to sounding so samey after a while
Beatles
4/5
beetles wa wa we wa
that said i will give this a 4 because its not bad but its more of a 3.75
M.I.A.
3/5
Some cool tracks but some equally boring ones. Xr2 bangs. 3.5
ABBA
3/5
I like the piano work on this but that said, the vocals don't really do it for me and get kinda tedious. Very average 3
Cypress Hill
2/5
kinda dull, track 2 is a classic.
The Everly Brothers
3/5
a bit boomer but short and sweet
Tim Buckley
2/5
David Gray
4/5
good listening, very pretty, lovely voice, really clean instrumentals. can't fault this too much, strong 4?
Supergrass
3/5
you got a license for that album?
the one famous song is overplayed in adverts. the guitar is actually solid but the voice teeters between decent and unlistenable.
2.5?
Barry Adamson
4/5
no wikipedia page eh?
what the fuck is this record, random blend of jazz, with spacey ambient, upbeat vocal sections, spoken word tracks??
I'm not really sure how to rate this. it doesnt seem to have a clear identity.. light 4 because of some nice highs?
fav track: in a moment of clarity, something wicked
Khaled
3/5
an interesting assortment of sounds, loses half a point for the imagine cover and is pretty long for an album of this type. i could see myself listening to this once a year but thats about it. nice experience.
Marvin Gaye
3/5
starts with a classic and spends the rest of the album chasing that high. still, a nice enough sound. strong 3
Taylor Swift
3/5
some of this is quite bland but a few of the songs and songwriting have some good qualities?
the lyrics on 'no body' are criminally bad though
Elbow
3/5
interesting. quite a bit of 'british' character to it. (especially the 2 famous songs)
some of the tracks are well done but not really for me.
fav track: the fix
3.33?
Solange
2/5
interesting idea that looked promising on the surface but the vocalist isnt that interesting and the instrumentals are SO flat that this gets old very very quickly.
allegedly soul but actually just vanilla r'n'b, only real positive is the lil wayne feature...
2
Pixies
4/5
feeling generous and giving it a light 4, an example of alt-rock that shows decent track diversity and is fun to listen to
fav track: monkey
Beach House
4/5
the band is an absolute staple of the modern dream pop genre, i do prefer 'bloom' as an overall album though.
Light 4
The Sugarcubes
4/5
pretty good, i didnt know that bjork was in a band and I think this showcases her voice quite well with a good variety of songs.
feeling a light 4 on this record
liked: motorcrash, sick for toys, mama
3/5
if someone asked me 'what is new-wave' i would send them 'the look of love'.
decent album, strong 3 from me, not enough banger tracks to push it higher
Haircut 100
3/5
strong first half that tapered off into something fairly mediocre. 2.5
good tracks: marine boy
Eels
1/5
life is hard and so am i
The Go-Go's
3/5
quite good, i dont recall many new-wave albums with female vocalists. starting to get a little sick of the genre though.
strong 3
Lana Del Rey
3/5
this is fine, her voice is quite nice but the songs are all fairly generic
David Bowie
2/5
so dull for a bowie album, no wonder i didnt know anything from this one.
Elton John
4/5
this was pretty alright, not much to complain about.
Van Morrison
3/5
its ok, his other album was better. quite sombre and can't see myself craving for this but its a good enough listen
Gillian Welch
2/5
just kinda boring, i was hoping for something on the alternative side but it's just slow and uninspiring
The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
1/5
starts off ok but just devolves into random preaching over tribal instrumentals
it has some redeeming qualities but im never touching this again
PJ Harvey
2/5
some of the tracks have potential but otherwise her shrieking is not that pleasant
Violent Femmes
4/5
actual banger, gone daddy gone with the xylophone is mental
top tracks: confessions, prove my love, gone daddy gone
strong 4 i think
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
its ok, definitely an experience. but i dont think its something i will listen to again
Metallica
5/5
i know this one hehe
i dont have to listen to it again to rate it, it's a 5.
when i first listened to it i wasn't that blown away actually (apart from master of puppets, that bangs for anyone), but this definitely grows over time. a masterpiece of metal that is arguably metallica's peak
rip cliff
The Replacements
3/5
its alright. somehow didnt mind the lyrics even though gary's got a boner
The Afghan Whigs
4/5
pretty good, deffo a grower
last track has godspeed vibes
Lynyrd Skynyrd
4/5
even the 'smaller' tracks are actually fairly good. feeling a generous light 4 on this piece of american rock
shame about that plane
Femi Kuti
4/5
was going to dismiss this as more random afrobeat but damn this is actually very good, i wasn't expecting the yolo message on 'live for today'
Lite 4
fav tracks: plenty nonsense, no shame
Muddy Waters
1/5
nahhhh
Madonna
2/5
not feeling quite a few songs on this one unfortunately
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
a little conflicted on this one, i've heard of janis joplin before but i never listened.
very unique voice, and a pretty interesting record but some of the instrumentals are a little rough around the edges.
i think it's a strong 3 as a 'first pass' review and i could see it being a 4 if in the mood for it...
Sonic Youth
4/5
something about this really hits the spot!
it's the first album that i didn't already know that I considered giving a 5.
a lot of the guitar sounds and tones are phenomenal, example second half of 'the sprawl', candle... those moments are my highlights of the album and I don't think there are enough to justify the 5 as some of the upbeat tracks are weaker.
Strong 4
fav tracks: cross the breeze, kissability, the sprawl, candle
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
same stance on nick as before, not a massive fan of the spoken word vocals, this just feels dull rather than something creative or interesting.
3/5
i really dont care for the beatles and no matter how awe inspiring / conceptual / psychadelic / mind breaking this album may be i have no immediate desire to listen to it again
Steely Dan
3/5
decent but not as good as aja?
strong 3
Beatles
3/5
wow such beatles more paul
better than pepper (prefer the beach rock kinda vibe) but still only really a 3 with no real pull for me
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
hey this has a song from shrek on it
strong 3, i actually found myself enjoying this, very rainy sunday mood.
Thundercat
4/5
damn that is not something i expected to come up in this list!!!
i know and like this record already.
funky jams, giving a light 4 to be generous, i think its a little too long and some of the songs feel a bit jerkoffy
Eminem
3/5
I'm still more of a 'the eminem show' guy, this is a decent 3 though.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
this rubs me the right way, very pretty shoegazey noise that reminds of MBV, have a nice life, slowdive etc. very enjoyable time, strong 4
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
seems to only have a few tracks on spotify? the ones that are there are good. strong 3, dont want to rate more since thats not very fair.
Adam & The Ants
3/5
very creative but a bit strange
Pixies
3/5
fine, dont love it, dont hate it. it is, what it is
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
turns out the band that made rumours can make other decent music!
a bit long, light 4. doesn't have the peaks of rumours but is a consistently good record
Goldfrapp
3/5
fine, bit boring... 2.5
Michael Jackson
4/5
nothing wrong with this, apart from the album cover
D'Angelo
3/5
probably just not in a mood for this to appreciate it, didnt seem that bad.
The Damned
4/5
i liked it!
Primal Scream
3/5
first track is a san andreas radio classic, however the album is long, the tracks are scattered and all over the place, and none of the interesting ideas are explored in any serious depth.
light 3
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
wee woo /mu/core alert
ive listened to this from cover to cover many times before, this was a high school special for sure...
some crazy good singles, plenty of dreamy instrumentals and honestly not that many dull or skippable songs which for a 2 hour!! runtime is pretty dang good.
have to give it the light 5
Big Star
3/5
strong 3
Miriam Makeba
3/5
this lost its magic somewhatwith the 'house of the rising sun' cover. light 3
Elliott Smith
2/5
lad's got a nice voice but this was just a bit dull
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
better than the other one, strong 3 to a light 4
Judas Priest
4/5
some decent early british metal fun. love it!
UB40
4/5
solid enjoy, i do like this kind of music and this is a pretty tight album. 4
King Crimson
4/5
moonchild is a bad track but the rest is dangerously based
lite 4
Laibach
2/5
kind of interesting, and... german, but i aint coming back to this
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
short and sweet, a forgettable espresso of an album
lots of these songs sounds a little bit like famous ones from other bands
Paul Weller
3/5
enjoyable, forgettable
Dr. John
2/5
i feel like giving this a 1 but it probably deserves a 2? the last track was interesting.
The Beach Boys
4/5
mellow surf rock that is actually quite hard to fault. strong 3 / lite 4
Erykah Badu
4/5
a grower for sure or maybe the last few songs are just better. a decent soul album, reminds a bit of hiatus koyotoe or however it goes
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
know it, love it. but is it a 5...
Various Artists
1/5
Fleet Foxes
5/5
hey i know this one (shout out to jesse)
for a debut indie album by a band this is spectacular.
the tone of the album with the light reverb, beautiful dreamy vocals and acoustic guitar, cannot be matched. their later albums riff on this formula but this is executed to perfection?
i had a paragraph here about how this isn't quite good enough to be a 5. i listened to it again and removed the paragraph :-)
Tracy Chapman
3/5
its ok fast car is overplayed probably wouldn't reach for this off the shelf often, average 3
Lightning Bolt
4/5
finally got round to coming back to this,
nice warbly guitar, kinda interesting album but im very rarely in the mood to appreciate something like this
The Cars
3/5
its doesnt feel good to give this a 3 but its not that bad, just a bit dull. low 3
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2/5
eh didnt love it
Joni Mitchell
4/5
pretty good voice light 4
Funkadelic
4/5
funky!
Black Sabbath
5/5
such a good album. the 'debut' of "heavy metal" that sparked a generation of music, awesome riffs, ozzy's vocals go with these perfectly, great drumming...
unironic light 5
Beastie Boys
3/5
sabotage is a great track, the rest of this is so-so. light 3
Led Zeppelin
3/5
decent bit of rock, strong 3?
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
hey its zappa
its ok, not his best
Nas
4/5
they call this a classic of hip hop but i never got it, not bad on this listen though.
fav tracks: life's a bitch, the world is yours
Led Zeppelin
3/5
bit long, goes on a bit. they're alright but the schtick loses its magic after kashmir
Morrissey
2/5

just a bit boring, shame
Jungle Brothers
1/5
this is "u" nlistenable
Queen Latifah
4/5
this has no right being this good
Japan
3/5
like a slightly worse duran duran, some tracks had their moments but overall it was not very inspiring.
light 3
fav track: aliens?
Willie Nelson
4/5
i wasn't gonna have high hopes for the fucking stoner's 22nd album that's all country covers but this was almost pleasant enough to give a 4
The B-52's
3/5
kinda fun, but on a bad day these vocals would really piss me off
Orbital
4/5
i've listened to this before funnily enough, i think it's really highly rated on the RYM techno chart or something like that, and i tried it when looking for some "acclaimed" techno
its a good album, not everyday listening but hits the spot when you're in the mood, starts off slow but the album is a nice slow build. 4
fav track: lush 3-1, monday
Brian Eno
4/5
felt long, good? strong 3 / light 4
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
maybe all the new wave is starting to get to me, i thought the instrumentals were quite good.
strong 3
The Pogues
2/5
i think "wild cats of kilkenny" was on the celtic playlist i put on when we were playing 'inis' because it seems familiar.
some of this is OK but a lot of it is sub par and for an hour play time? light 2
Pavement
3/5
the lightest of 3s
Janelle Monáe
2/5
this feels like a movie soundtrack rather than an album
while kinda pretty, simple but effective instrumentals and a nice vocalist, i somehow found this lacking of any real soul apart from on the odd track. (neon valley street)
2 because i was disappointed.
Genesis
4/5
i've listened to this before but i thought it had a strange unpleasant tone to it. maybe the remastered version i tried today fixes this but yeah, solid prog. not as good as 'yes' but enjoyable. lite 4
Suzanne Vega
3/5
decent voice, but some of the tracks lost my attention.
med 3

2/5
ehhhh 2.5

Deep Purple
4/5
very very good, for a live album? just sounds like a greatest hits. the guitar is so clean...
considering giving this a 5...
Ramones
4/5
damn, a real good streak recently. really tight song writing, i only knew blitzkrieg bop but the rest is a bop too :)
Alanis Morissette
2/5
really disappointed, thought this would be good but all the songs are about the same thing, just sounds so monotone
even ironic seems to be weak by the time we get to it which is crazy
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
1/5
Genre Country folk, bluegrass
Length 105:55
no thanks
Meat Loaf

Ozomatli
1/5
couldn't find this anywhere, not even on tpb
Queen
2/5
ehhhh
Super Furry Animals
4/5
surprising actually, started off as 'british britpop wank' but develops character quickly. has a gorillaz quirk vibe to it. not bad
Beatles
4/5
i think its got a few flaws, and its so damn long (compared so something of similar length like smashing pumpkins, this isn't as consistent)
so not quite a 5. but good, very good
Cream
3/5
alright, nice bit of psych. strong 3
The Velvet Underground
2/5
just fucking wank, light 2
Beck
3/5
this is like a 4 gatekeeper, good but not great, quite polished, can't really fault it but it's very forgettable.
Emmylou Harris
2/5
ehhhh a bit too churchy and definitely a bit too country in places. light 2
The xx
5/5
am i going to give every album ive heard of before a 5? maybe
another daily driver, still have this on my phone etc.
big fan of this album. i thnk the flow between tracks could be better but individually this is an excellent selection of very tight songs, don't quite have the right word but the almost haunting vocals with the simple instrumentals sends shivers down my spine every time.
fav songs: shelter, night time, stars
the fact 2 songs are stuck in my head the next day says it all
Green Day
3/5
kinda long. never got into them when they were the hot stuff in high school. alright
Tom Waits
2/5
a bit confused and a bit too long for my zoomer attention span
Merle Haggard
1/5
fuck that
ABBA
3/5
some sort of disco pop? yeah alright nothing to write home about
Iron Maiden
4/5
yea pretty good 4 territory right here
Fatboy Slim
3/5
some of the samples are quite annoying but you have to admit there's some 90's anthems on here. that said, let's leave them as single anthems and not string them together.
Nirvana
3/5
i knew all the 'good' songs off this (box, rape me, dumb, pennyroyal tea, all apologies) but the rest is not that great.
strong 3?
Prefab Sprout
4/5
surprisngly good, maybe a light 4?
The Smiths
3/5
actually some interesting ideas, and some great guitar / bass play. e.g barbarism, nowhere fast.
the titular track is quite interesting.
the wailing on track 2 is however particularly unpleasant...
like a middling 3, its not bad
David Bowie
3/5
has some weak spots, strong 3.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
not that bad, title sums it up. some ballads. quite like the songs with female features.
Dolly Parton
2/5
sure is dolly. nothing technically wrong with it, just a bit not my thing. yee haw. 2.5

The Last Shadow Puppets
2/5

a bit too bri'ish
The Magnetic Fields
1/5
69
OutKast
2/5
bit cheesy, not the best ghetto rap
The Cure
4/5
listend to this before. i love 'lovesong'. it's a little long and hard to listen to often because it's so haunting and depressing but it's a good album in its niche
James Taylor
3/5
mediocre, kinda easy on the ears with his gentle voice.. 2.5?
Air
4/5
as a standalone soundtrack, pretty alright. i skimmed the plot of the film, would be interesting to see how this is used in that, to be honest.
AC/DC
4/5
i remember when i thought ac/dc was cool :D
they still are :D
tight, fun rock, some terrific geetar, the album falls off towards the end a little bit and they do work best as a 'best of hits' kinda band, still giving this a light 4 cos its a bop!
Jane Weaver
3/5
what did i just listen to
some tracks like slow motion have a grimes-y vibe.
then you get to valley / ravenspoint and you have slow psychy folk? and then wish is back to a chiptune bopper.
i'm giving this a 3 because it's confusing. some neat ideas and definitely not unpleasant.
normally im all over female vocalist stuff like this but it just lacks a defined direction.
Shivkumar Sharma
1/5
very little redeeming qualities to be honest unfortunately
Beck
3/5
feels a bit all over the place (am i saying this too much?) average 3, was ok
Gorillaz
5/5
yeah im 5ing this one without listening to it... i know this one.
not as good as demon days, but such a nice variety of creative and clever tracks, from a 20 year old album? love it, it blew my mind as a kid.
some of tracks like 'punk' or 'latin simone' might not be a 10/10 but the rest of the album makes up for it.
fav tracks: re-hash, tomorrow comes, sound check, slow country
Franz Ferdinand
3/5
its ok, some nice british rock, i feel like their later stuff is marginally better?
some boppin, blare this in the park with a can of lager. strong3?
Björk
4/5
didnt mind this, nice showcase of her voice, bit weird and interesting, approachable. light 4
Cee Lo Green
2/5
2.5, its ok... cee-lo hits a niche that is not necessarily for me
Fats Domino
2/5
however groundbreaking or father of rock and roll this was at the time, it doesnt hold up especially for me

budget radiohead
Frank Sinatra
4/5
that's swing, man's got a great voice
Culture Club
3/5
N E W
W A V E
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
actually vibe hard with this, wicked disco / synth instrumentals and the tone of the vocals gives the whole thing a depressing vibe that i genuinely quite like.
close to a 5...
Lauryn Hill
2/5
has some pretty moments but is otherwise quite drab
The Fall
2/5
tedious
The Young Gods
3/5
what would happen if you took a homeless guy out from the parisian metro, recorded his wailings and added some instrumental metal

Ray Price
1/5
bom pom pom nope
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
3/5
alright

long, pleasant but in a background noise kinda way? average 3
Basement Jaxx
2/5
maybe in 1999 this was considered "house" and "good music" but it fucking blows today.
second half was a little better but some of the samples on the first few are insufferable,
light 2
Talking Heads
4/5
sounds like talking heads, think ive said that before, they have a sound thats consistent.
pretty pleasant. light 4
probably better than the other one we had but not as good as remain in light
Oasis
2/5
eh, passable britbong. didnt feel it, 2.5. maybe if i was wankered
Bee Gees
3/5
long, oddly varied. feels like a 1 hour radio show rather than an album by a band.
still pleasant tho
1/5
couldn't find it.
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
ive always wanted to listen to an lcd soundsystem album all the way through, but despite trying my hardest with this, it was pretty hard.
same issue i always have with these guys, i like the instrumentals and the ideas but the vocal + lyric combination is just wet wank
and by 'all my friends' the instrumentals were getting tedious too.
Blur
4/5
interesting to listen to some blur that's not just the first 2 singles off this album.
pretty good for some 1997, some energetic songs that remind of later gorillaz tracks, and a good amount of slower david bowie esque tracks. pretty decent, maybe a bit weird pacing wise
Aretha Franklin
3/5
not that bad, a bit not to my tastes, but nice vocals and good accompanying music. avg 3
DJ Shadow
5/5
i first became aware of the fella when he did the king gizzard remix, which was pretty good.
very happy to see his eclectic instrumentals at work here. at lot of the songs or instrumentals seem strangely familiar, i wonder if he's using famous samples or if his work became sampled.
in any case, a little slice of instrumental bliss.
fav track: stem / long stem , organ donor, napalm brain
Buffalo Springfield
4/5
light 4 would not object to hearing again, light hearted
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
the indie rock label and the curious album art didnt give me high hopes, but this is a highlight of the list for sure.
some weak points and probably deserves more listens, but a solid 4 from me on this record
fav tracks: little fury things, kracked, in a jar, poledo
Everything But The Girl

drab
The Yardbirds
3/5
bit folky, slight bumpkin flavour

808 State
4/5
my notes got lost :( or i didnt save them.
tl;dr decent idm, have a slight soft spot for this stuff when it shows up so im probably overrating it at a light 4.
U2
3/5
kinda generic stadium rock, nothing to go crazy for
Spiritualized
4/5
wee woo /mu/core
first track is a "certified hood classic"
theres a few strong tracks on here, 70 mins of space rock gets a bit tedious though. avg 4
Animal Collective
4/5
My girls = huge bop.
definitely psychadelic, some of the tracks make you feel high. i do quite like this one.
least fav = taste.

Stevie Wonder
3/5
very strong 3? i liked this but probs wont ever listen again
Kelela
4/5

4
The Soft Boys
3/5
not feeling it much
The Slits
2/5
nice cover
songs are pretty rough :/
Booker T. & The MG's

some strong tracks, 4.5?
AC/DC
5/5
damn i haven't listened to this in a long time, used to be on rotation back in the day. to me this is the posterchild of rock, light hearted, technically satisfying and just fun!!

2/5
ehhh feels kinda dated, not too bad but at the same time not my jam
Ray Charles
3/5
pleasant radio / movie montage music :D

3.5
Fugazi

very cool record, fun use of samples / oriental instrumentals
fav tracks: butterfly, sutrix, eclipse, light,

fav track: go?
Finley Quaye
3/5
ah yeah, scottish reggae
drags on a bit
3/5
pretty ok
Radiohead
3/5
the thing is, the songs are all decent individually but the composition into an album is just strange
the first 4 have electronic / ballad themes
then you get upbeat and then you go ambient and end with a sax jaz song?
i'd probably get used to it and even like it more on more listens, but its a 3 atm. in hindsight 'in rainbows' was probably higher than a 3 since it was better than this on 1st listen
Sade
4/5
love her voice, strong 4
Flamin' Groovies
3/5
was ready to hate on this but then i listened to it through the whole way with no complaints.

the instrumentals carry this very hard, but then you get alfie
fuck it im giving it a 1 this is proper dog
Janis Joplin
3/5
if mercedes benz wasnt a track then maybe a light 4. but that brings it down.
sounds way older than it actually is, then again 1971 was 50 years ago...
John Martyn
3/5
smooth
System Of A Down
5/5
im always torn on how to rank system albums, there isn't really a bad track on this, it showcases beautifully what they do, bit of variety..

strong 3? decent punk but the tracks are so short, at least with something like black flag the tracks go super hard, here its a bit mediocre
Megadeth
4/5
pretty good, i had some friends into them but i always though they were in the 'a bit weird' camp with stuff like iron maiden, alice cooper etc. light 4
Destiny's Child
3/5
decent RnB, the hits are a 4 but the rest of this is an average 3, think this genre has a ceiling at light 4 tbh.
Genesis
4/5
i usually find genesis a little bit annoying, and its suprising this is only a year after "selling england .. " since it's much easier to swallow
light 4, it's fucking long but it's all quite solid prog that doesn't get boring
ZZ Top
3/5
boppable kinda rock, some greats, however "tv dinners" is a real low.
light 3
Public Image Ltd.
1/5
badly mastered PISS
Butthole Surfers

every step you take doesn't fit with the rest of the album really,
really cool stuff. fav track: synchronicity II
strong 4
Fiona Apple
4/5
i remember listening to this when it came out and not being a fan. having some time away from it definitely helps approach it fresh. this is imo the definition of an album that should be on this list, there's lots of unique ideas, i would listen to it as a study but probably not for fun. strong 4

you're a big girl all the way eh
didnt find the songwriting to my tastes, and since that's the main schtik here, well...
Taylor Swift
3/5
dunno how to word it without sounding like a hipster but its a bit overproduced, the core is quite nice and fun to listen to but i genuinely start seeing tv adverts play in my eyes when hearing more than 5 tracks in a row
Paul Simon
2/5
eh, about the same as graceland. 2.5
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
the name seemed familiar, a tight 40 mins of clean jazz fun, what's not to like?
obligatory jazz 4 awarded
Roni Size
2/5
i like drum and bass, but this feels quite dated and more annoying than enjoyable.
some tracks like "heroes", "new forms" are ok, but stuff like mad cat sucks...

the guitar playing is lovely, i think pink moon was a bit more sombre and soulful. strong 3 for this one
Metallica
4/5

2 hours of metallica in one sitting is a bit much but i'm out the other side with a big smile on my face
strong 4
Bad Company
3/5

Aerosmith
4/5
short, nice hits, bit jealous of his 10 inch record to be honest.
decent 4, would need to be a touch less lewd to be in the 5 zone
Ministry
4/5
i think these guys supported death grips on tour once, and that makes sense.
nice industrial metal, as is often the case the drumming is noticeably great. not super keen on the vocals but they add to the overall grimey feel
strong 4
Adele
4/5
unsurprisingly i have heard chunks of this before
kinda good, there's obviously potential there and people like this stuff, a lot of it is generically pleasing but not impressive. fav track: Million Years Ago

2/5
inoffensive but forgettable, nothing kinky about it

maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
womaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
Tom Waits
3/5
voiceis a bit deep for me, bit hard on the ears
"in shades" is good tho
Ice Cube
3/5
decent bit of old rap, but not that many bangers
OutKast
2/5
ehh
Joni Mitchell
3/5
a bit like fiona apple, what is hilarious is we've had two albums of hers before and i've said that i like her vocals on "blue" but not on "court and spark".
this is ok, not a fan of the jungle line as the 2nd track, the rest of the album is fine, not wowed
Queen
3/5
decent queen album, not much to say
strong 3
Arcade Fire
2/5
feels like generic indie, none of the charm of something like 'fleet foxes' for me really. strong 2 because i was a little disappointed
Derek & The Dominos
4/5
damn the mix on this 50th anniv. edition is great,
layla is a classic track, lots of decent track all around
probably the best we've had of clapton so i'll stretch to a 4
Radiohead
5/5
le fucking classique
feels a bit wild this is a 25 year old record
fav tracks: let down, electioneering
falls off a little towards the end (climbing / lucky), i was really gonna try and be a lad and give it a 4 but start until electioneering goes so hard it almost doesn't matter
light, diet semi skim 5
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
2/5
so forgettable i forgot i had it on
The Who
5/5
i happily listened through the b-sides without realizing, nice contrast with the last track.
sick album, great bangers, great ballads,
fav tracks: love ain't for keeping (a slow song done well!), getting in tune, behind blue eyes
light 5
Herbie Hancock
1/5
track 1 hurts the ears
track 2 was ok
track 3 is back to noise
this can fuck right off
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
good, i like the back half from 'it doesn't matter' onwards. I would probably listen to singles rather than the full album.
strong 3
The Mars Volta
4/5
oh man i haven't listened to the mars volta in about 10 years
im not super keen on the guys vocals
good modern take on prog rock though
fav tracks: drunkenship of lanterns , televators
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
fuck i never knew that america was a cover when yes did it,
has great tracks but doesn't have the impact of PSRT
light 4
The Isley Brothers
2/5
not feeling this one
2/5
i always thought kick out the jams was a RATM original since i first heard it by them.
i dont think there is any benefit to this being a live album, itd be better in studio quality even if less punky.
not a huge fan, strong 2
Simple Minds
3/5
new waveeeee
2.5
Sheryl Crow
2/5
ehhh
Joy Division
3/5

The Monks
2/5
1966 wow!
ehhhhhhhhhh
The Who
3/5
fine?
David Bowie
4/5
hey look more bowie. really good record,
close to a 5, i think 'song for bob dylan' and 'the bewlay brothers' score too low to avg out a 5.
fav tracks: oh you pretty things, life on mars, kooks, fill your heart, queen bitch
strong 4
Brian Eno
3/5
although this is apparently the birth of ambient music as a genre etc blah blah, i've tried to listen to this before but never found it very engaging.
there are so many better ambient albums that came later:
pop - gas
green - hiroshi yoshimura
el camino real,
aphex twin vol2,
actually i tried to think of more ambient and I couldn't. maybe the genre isn't as big as i thought it was.
decent 3 i suppose?
The The
3/5
yes quite
William Orbit
4/5
quite enjoyable, very 90s sound.
definitely a real salad of sounds
light 4
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
i've heard "can i kick it before"
quite a good classic rap album, very clean, good beats, good raps.
well executed, decent 4
PJ Harvey
4/5
actually interesting folk, her voice is almost bojrky - for example on 'in the dark places'
which is strange that that was my main observation since i hated the other 2 albums we had from her so far.
Songhoy Blues
4/5
unexpected
world music that isn't BVSC is capped at 4, this sits up there. great bops
Eurythmics
5/5
bop city, super funky, love the vocals
easily 5 standard
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
3/5
un dun dun dun dun pin pin pin tin tun tan tun pim pam
Drive Like Jehu
4/5
remind me of 'at the drive in' but also something else i can't put my finger on
ahhh distal's crash of rhinos.
it's not bad, maybe a bit too much noise on this one, plus it's loooong
light 4
Peter Gabriel
3/5
budget genesis, dont love it dont hate it
Pretenders
4/5
really good actually, interesting female vocals, cool range of songs and decent guitar at times.
strong 4!
Heaven 17
3/5
decent 80's bop, i think a lot of the songs have creative ideas and themes but the execution isn't there on all of them
going down to a strong 3, it's a bit long and starts getting tedious
fave track: play to win
Red Hot Chili Peppers
5/5
could this not be a 5? very much doubt it.
every song goes hard and i know most of the words already, another classic back from the days
very easy 5
fav tracks: scar tissue, this velvet glove, road trippin'
Doves
3/5
fine, not amazing, perhaps good at the time or live
Gang Of Four
4/5
decent kind of old school punk, light 4
Robbie Williams
4/5
robbie's a pretty good entertainer huh
enjoyed this way more than i thought i ever would, light 4
The Monkees
3/5
budget beetles, radio 2 music
Screaming Trees
3/5
not that bad, some of the instrumentals are a bit noisy and "crowded", and the others a bit bland
light 3
Elastica
3/5
decent, would bob along if this was on the radio, probably won't come back to
light 3
The Young Rascals
3/5
chill light hearted fluff
light 3
Jane's Addiction
3/5
oh my goodness you hit play and it hits you right in the nose with the fucking exmilitary sample
rest of this is fun, probably not as good as their other album we had already.
strong 3
The La's
4/5
cool songwriting, yeah, why not
2Pac
4/5
decent vibe, light 4
GZA
2/5
ehh, the slower raps feel a little dull on this. not the best the wutang lot have come up with.
The Kinks
3/5
kind of annoyingly catchy, i would hesitate to listen again in case i get earwormed ...
strong 3
Led Zeppelin
4/5
good album, light 4?
Stereo MC's
3/5
first track's been on a lot of adverts i think
maybe a light 4 but it has a track with chicken in the name, so 3
Yes
3/5
not as good as some of their other stuff, missing a certain je ne sai quoi
light 3
The Jam
3/5
fine nice vibe strong 3
Amy Winehouse
4/5
enjoyed this a lot more than i remember enjoying back to black, strong 4 on this one. good stuiff
FKA twigs
4/5
im gonna give this a light 4 for the quirkyness, the slower pacing of the songs is interesting and you do get used to it. worth the liste.
Michael Jackson
4/5
michael jackson, he hasn't been in the news too much lately, where you hiding jacko?
Christine and the Queens
3/5
dont mind it in principle, i think "girlfriend" was a summer hit at some point, maybe when i was in france and i'm really sick of that song. there are some hits on here but a few misses too, light 3
Sonic Youth
4/5
i like this a lot actually, the bleak depressing vibe is great, like the tones.
i gave their other a strong 4 and this is also a strong 4, should probably listen to them more!
John Grant
3/5
a bit camp, strong 3 for some strong moments
Big Black
2/5
lacks refinement
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
this is the tarkus guys right?
its ok, not a great live
Laura Nyro
2/5
not especially impressed actually, feels like some broadway yankee shit. the way she sings is a bit over the top
Parliament
3/5
probably wasnt in the right mood for this first time round, dont feel like i wanna funk myself and listen to it again.
Cornershop
4/5
really weird record, surprisngly electronic, the sitars on butter the soul
probably a 4 because it needs a revisit for sure
Beatles
3/5
tolerable pop, nothing super special tbh
Leonard Cohen
3/5
white man with geetar
Ella Fitzgerald
1/5
christmas album / jingle vibes.
"let's call the whole thing off" is the worst song ive heard in a while, made me physically sick
1
Björk
2/5
sounds like bjork
i like the cover more than the music

New York Dolls
3/5
good fun strong 3

3/5
fine, sounds older than it actually is.. light light 3
The Youngbloods
3/5
nothing super standout maybe strong 3? good in background but nothing to focus on
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
a bit better than their other stuff we've had, i still find him annoying.
decent 3
The Kinks
3/5
sounds like the beatles honestly pleasant but not incredible not sure what to say helps the time pass
Bobby Womack
4/5
mostly familiar with bobby from his feature with gorillaz, i did like what he delivered there and this is in a more leisurely funky style.
Kate Bush
2/5
in theory i like her voice but this feels quite bjorky in the same way that its a bit uncomfortable to listen to.
appreciated but not to my taste, 2
Megadeth
4/5
pretty good, not sure how it compares to "rust in peace" since it's been a while. same calibre, very decent very palatable metal
Hookworms
4/5
listened while playing dota, have no recollection of album, played the best juggernaut game in a long while though, so 4+
SAULT
3/5
it's ok, funnily enough they came on my radar the day before this because they had some new releases that i saw on RYM
light 3, i found this to be very disjointed though there was not much wrong with individual tracks.
Nirvana
5/5
this is an absolute hood classic that i found about when someone in our high school played the acoustic (cover of bowie) of man who sold the world.
nirvana on albums are great, but this has a special energy, there's no words.
5++
Foo Fighters
3/5
its a funny coincidence if not depressing to go from the MTV unplugged which came out after Kurt died, to the album that his drummer (dave) wrote to help him get over the suicide.
Anyway, i like the foo fighters, never listened to stuff this old from them though.
bit rough and a bit yelly, they get better (perhaps more poppy though) later
Mj Cole
3/5
kinda dull, some nice moments
i think a lot of these tracks would shine if part of a dj mix with other artists but together there's not a lot brought from this being an album and it gets samey.
3+
Brian Eno
3/5
passable, mildly annoying in parts. doesnt have that much going for it
3-
The Shamen
4/5
nice, some of the singing bits could be better. would i listen again?
fav tracks: possible worlds,
4-
The Stone Roses
3/5
fools gold is the best track on the album, the rest is fine, it doesnt have anything amazing going for it imo
Baaba Maal
4/5

4-
Run-D.M.C.
4/5
ITS TRICKAYYYYYYYYYYYYY
De La Soul
4/5
big long, good funky vibes,
4-
Liz Phair
4/5
bold to put your areola on the cover

4- (4 streak lol)
The Kinks
3/5
fine, lots of shorter radio fodder songs
3=
The Gun Club
3/5
not as hard as i expected for "punk"
forgettable but ok 3-
The Cure
4/5
similarly to the other albums they've had on here, the cure deliver a melancholy that delivers pleasure straight to the soul
fav tracks: play for today, secrets, a forest, seventeen seconds
4+
Muddy Waters
3/5
wanted to hate on it for being live but it's still pretty damn good ya kno
3=
Motörhead
2/5
live lemmy, not bad, some of the bits in between songs are horrendous
probably gonna go harsh and 2+ it, i wouldnt listen to this over the clean album
Black Sabbath
4/5
good, strong 4. not as good at S/T
Johnny Cash
5/5
i actually listened to this before, not for a long time.
it really shows the potential of good live and good country music, there's a great deal of emotion, fun and wonderful music packed into this album of bangers. one of Johnny's best!
5
The Divine Comedy
4/5
bit of a broadway stage thing going on, not a fan of the style but have to respsect the fact i quite liked it,
4-
Joni Mitchell
3/5
shes fine, 3+, i wouldn't put this on but i wouldn't turn it off if it was already playing?
Rush
4/5
oh yesssssssss
i think i like moving pictures more, there's decent songs on here but not as good.
light 4, probably should have gievn moving pictures a 5 in hindsight?
The Who
3/5
strong 3? it's a bunch of the who but without studio clean sound
decent
Emmylou Harris
3/5
sounds like dolly parton lol, i gave dolly a 2.5 but this is a bit less yee haw so ill stretch to a very very light 3--
The Mamas & The Papas
3/5
got the one famous song on it, the rest is tolerable, 3=
Peter Frampton
2/5
"i have itchy fingers"
ehh, there's some aspects of this to love but the liveness doesn't help sell him and i just found it annoying.
2-
not even the hit single saves it since i find that annoying too, ooh baby fuck off
R.E.M.
3/5
its kinda inoffensive rock, the voice can get tedious, the bangers are bops, it is what it is 3=
Syd Barrett
2/5
man with geetar but bland
not feeling it mate
New Order
5/5
pretty great, this is what i think of when i hear the phrase "new wave" actually.
the synths are absolutely killer throughout this, all killer no filler
4+ / 5??
the only thing i dont like is the silence at the start of elegia but that might just be my copy
Scott Walker
3/5
short clean and tasteful, 3=
Ash
2/5
like a blend between greenday and weezer with the appeal of neither, splash in some of the united kingdom pop dusting on top and you've got this, while not particularly problematic just another of these dime a dozen rock albums
2
The War On Drugs
4/5
zoned out a little during this so perhaps didnt give it the full attention but seems enjoyable, not too bad, light 4?
Def Leppard
4/5
lots of easy listening big ass bops, hell yea
not sure what the cover art is meant to be though
4=
fav tracks: rock of ages, billy's got a gun, photograph, die hard the hunter
Janet Jackson
1/5
found this offensively dull, crappy beats and flat vocals
Dire Straits
4/5
didn't realise money for nothing had slurs in it
bops are good, tail end a little weaker, still stretch to a light 4
The Modern Lovers
3/5
psychy kinda rock, not tragic,
strong 3 / light 4?
Siouxsie And The Banshees
2/5
ehhhh like a 2.5 tolerable
The Rolling Stones
4/5
not bad, so many stones i dunno how to rank them all.
light 4?
Little Richard
3/5
its ok, theres not really anything wrong with it but i associate this music more with being in movies (or tv ads) rather than something people actually listen to because it's old / sounds old?
light 3 for that reason i think
The Flaming Lips
4/5
more mellow and easier to vibe to than yoshimi
i liked the beat on 'the observer'
lite 4
Gang Starr
3/5
old school, some cool tracks with cool delivery, but the instrumental is a bit squeaky at some times
3=
Jacques Brel
1/5
when i see the name jacques i think of marge learning to bowl
france can suck it
Iggy Pop
3/5
somehow i associated iggy with something heavier, more rocky
this sounds like a bowie album sang by a yank (which makes sense given the history of how it came about)
strong 3 i suppose
Beatles
3/5
i recall white being better, not all too impressed tbh
Spacemen 3
3/5
spacemen 3 = 3 (did i make this "joke" already?)
it could hit 4 on the right day, but not every day
Sufjan Stevens
3/5
its a little bit quirky holds up spork, not terrible, hovers between a 3 and a 4 and the problem is mostly that if i had a vinyl of this it would never get played
3
Deerhunter
3/5
deerhoof is better
kinda inoffensive rocky thing without too much going for it at first listen
light 3...
Deee-Lite
3/5
some alright tracks, some very very 80s garbage on others.
light 3
Tom Waits
4/5
The style is ok, I like his voice but not necessarily the pronunciation.
The lightest of fours because it's interesting.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
funkayyyyyyy
The Prodigy
5/5
actually legendary, there's some really wicked tunes on this one. how have i not heard these before
fav tracks: break and enter, full throttle, poison, no good, one love, claustrophobic sting
Soft Cell
5/5
sex dwarf is a masterpiece, i knew tainted love of course, but this is really really great, a little bit camp in places but the synths slap
i can't imagine this coming out as the debut in fuckin 1980,
strong 4 / light 5,
Billy Joel
4/5
ayy, finally some billy. Has a style, well executed, doesn't fully deliver to my personal taste
4=
Missy Elliott
4/5
surprisingly good, strong vibe on this one that caught me off guard
dece 4
Hanoi Rocks
4/5
pretty good glam rock kinda thing, surprisingly enjoyable actually, enough to stretch to a 4. had an underdog angle, probably wouldn't rate it a 4 if it came from a band like KISS or something
not awful, its u2. feels like a 3 of rock that shows some creativity at times but never pushes the boat too far leaving you with... something fairly average on the whole
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
whys it so long
surprising there are so many tracks with 100m+ views i've never heard before
overall solid tho, lots of influences from this on later music and loads of familiar samples taken from this (I assume)
strong 3
Arctic Monkeys
3/5
A kinda Brit laddish drinking kinda thing, the instrumentals are a lot better than the moaning
Not a fan of the lyrics so it's a 3, could be a four on a drunk day.
Skunk Anansie
2/5
i think my friend's dad used to listen to them, (and went to see them live?) i remember the name but not sure if i know any songs
theres a real smorgasboard of stuff on here, dont love her voice, the album is a bit confused
worth a listen but not again, 2
Soundgarden
4/5
great grunge, very very solid and a high point for the genre
strong 4
Aphex Twin
5/5
on the 1-5 scale, xtal is a 10/5 track
glorious fuzzy ambient beats, i think there's a slight dip at I/ Green Calx , but there's so many hood classic bangers (tha, pulsewidth, ageispolis, heliospan, schottkey, ptolemy, actium) that it has to be a 5.
Can
2/5
so noisy, listening to years of gizz has kinda spoilt me, this has good moments but some real lows too.
light 2, never again
Leftfield
4/5
was really not expecting an album on this list to have someone from dreadzone on track 1
some good tracks, some middling. space shanty was great
light 4
The Black Keys
3/5
fine indie / light psych / blues rock kinda thing
inoffensive 3, nothing really stands out for me despite the good variety of songs
Elvis Presley
2/5
would be easy to give this a good score cos its elvis ya kno
but actually there's very little of interest to me here, so it's a 2
The Verve
1/5
noisy guitars and bri*ish wailing, no thanks
The Sonics
2/5
a bit loud and harsh, 2.5
The Icarus Line
3/5
inoffensive american rock, on the side of a strong 3?
Tina Turner
4/5
the song private dancer felt a bit painfully long, some of the songs are quite depressing
perhaps a light 4? it kinda flew by while being quite fun so
MC Solaar
4/5
if its french, is it world music?
ragga jam was funny...
was quite good, you dont need to understand the vocals the way they are integrated with the music on this, clean fresh beats
deserves the 4
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
oh boy a second lcd soundsystem album
much easier to enjoy than the one we had before,
"how do you sleep" was a decent track
i do still loathe the vocals, especially on "tonite" and "emotional haircut".
strong 3? the highs don't outweigh the lows for me sadly
Koffi Olomide
3/5
Congolese deez nuts
Lou Reed
2/5
i didn't pay close attention to the lyrics which might be my issue, but i found this a little bit dull, sorry lou
1/5
his voice is so nasal, i can't stand it on this
Mott The Hoople
3/5
i think i enjoyed this, though it was hectic at work at the time.
nice bit of british rock, a bit of an amalgam of lots of bands of that time in terms of sound, like rolling stones or queen, bits of bowie or something.
strong 3 / lite 4
Sonic Youth
4/5
i feel like i've heard a few of these songs before, on radio 6 perhaps?
kool thing is on geetar hero 3 as well.
i adore the guitars sound on tunic.
it has some special energy that's the same at the start of mote, it's a cure-esque dark vibe that is incredible. It's not there on the whole album unfortunately
the alternating male and female vocals are great.
decent 4
fav tracks: tunic, mote, cinderella's big score
Johnny Cash
4/5
mfw sixty-seventh studio album
cool covers, some nice takes on the songs and well executed
probably strong 3 / light 4
Pink Floyd
3/5
didnt love it, felt a bit drawn out. there's prog with more bite to it
perhaps an off day, light 3
Rocket From The Crypt
4/5
strong punk, the vocalist sounds a little bit like a saner version of the Dillinger Escape Plan fella
i've heard "on a rope" somewhere before, perhaps crash or from high school friends?
fell off a bit towards the end, light 4
Turbonegro
3/5
inoffensive kinda glam rock, quite easy to digest and enjoy, fun album cover
perhaps 10 minutes too long but a very strong 3
Willie Nelson
3/5
you know what willie, you're alright.
Lenny Kravitz
3/5
some of the song lyrics are a bit cringe, the religion / overly psychy bits...
still, kinda enjoyable
Machito
4/5
strong trumpet, strong jazz
lite 4 that is typical of jazz i suppose
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
the boss
cheery poppy stadium rock kinda dealio, its alright, like a better u2
middle 3
Pearl Jam
4/5
good grunge, like the genre, like this. lite 4
Prince
4/5
proper pop, interesting tracks, interesting instruments, character
strong from prince, gets a 4 from me
4/5
i suppose the question on everyone's mind, is whether this is as good as 'fragile'.
and the short answer, is no
50 Cent
3/5
there's no way in hell someone listens to this album all in one go
that said, it sounds older than it is (though it's still 20 years old)
has a fresh and oldskool vibe at the same time, some good tracks but i am not gansta enough for dis shit
Crowded House
3/5
a bit mellow, not necessarily in either a good or bad way
The Incredible String Band
2/5
the singer is a bit of a wanker, lost all my good will on the first track
The Saints
4/5
saints or sinners?
pretty good actually, didnt have high hopes going in but was alright. light 4
John Lee Hooker
2/5
its probably fine but i cant say i love this sort of blues, its just a bit 'tramp in a dive bar' ya know
Röyksopp
4/5
oh man, i've heard eple loads of times, one of these bands i've heard of but never sat down and listened to an album of.
vibrant, colourful electronic with interesting and bright (running out of synonyms here) tunes that seem to hit the perfect balance between minimalistic and enthralling
gets the feet tapping for sure, but i dont think its quite a 5
fav tracks:
poor leno, in space, so easy, remind me
Buck Owens
1/5
finally, the opportunity to give something a 1
Radiohead
4/5
about half of this is generic rocky (though good for 1994) but then you have these melodic, entrancing radiohead ballads that I would say is their signature sound.
street spirit is great
probably the same ballpark as Röyksopp, just short of a 5 i reckon
fav tracks: street spirit, fake plastic trees, my iron lung,
Dizzee Rascal
3/5
the beats are pretty crude and generally very lo-fi but i guess that's part of the charm
some strong lyrics and rapping, better than central cee for sure
avg3?
Eagles
3/5
rock
Billy Bragg
3/5
feeling generous so giving this a strong 3, good variety and not unpleasant
Frank Ocean
3/5
didn't blow me away, but there wasn't anything noticably wrong with it either. quite a polished rap album.
went back fro a second listen, i think the lyrics dont form any real connection which lets this down. avg 3
The Clash
4/5
i expected something more punky, the variety of tracks was nice.
solid 4!
fav tracks:
lost in the supermarket, death or glory, the guns of brixton, jimmy jazz,
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
its not loveless
Justice
4/5
listened to this before, some really cool iconic tracks.
daft punky style electronic, quite like. great drums.
light 4?
Supertramp
3/5
i listened to it, i can't remember a single thing
Goldie
3/5
bit slow until "a sense of rage", even afterwards it's just so long, and not that good?
but what would be my benchmark of a good drum and bass album?
level select by pizza hotline? sewerslvt?
the talvin singh?
i think for the most part this genre thrives off singles and then dj mixes rather than albums, except in unusual circumstances.
avg to strong 3 for this?
Fela Kuti
4/5
shoutout to the nigerian government
Nick Drake
4/5
wait, the boris akuma no uta cover is a reference to this?
that's funny and surprising.
anyway, nick drake continues to deliver and justifies his album placements on the list to be honest, one of the best artists to be introduced to.
Ride
4/5
Strong Xgaze, decent 4.
Might be /mu/core, was already in my Spotify likes
Spiritualized
4/5
strong debut, very spacy
shine a light is a cool track

soft kinda ballad, a bit dull, not especially my style
avg2

Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
decent
Run-D.M.C.
2/5
hey the synth from hard times sounds a bit like DG's system blower
a bit slow, feels like they've forgotten to put a bit of the backing track on each song
not a huge fan tbh, 1.5
Jeff Beck
3/5
bluesy, not sure how i feel about rod stewart's vocals on this (generally, not great)
felt kinda eh on first listen, gave another try and will lean to a 3.65
Meat Puppets
4/5
there's a few tracks here that are mostly famous after being covered by nirvana in the mtv set, but they are still great tracks on their own in their own rendition
not an everyday listen but pretty good stuff, variety is a word that gets used a lot in these ratings but this is a smorgasbord of tracks
Joan Baez
3/5
can't deny she has a good voice but im not a fan of stuff like the 'house of the rising sun' cover
just think its a bit over the top, pref something more 'casual' 'low key'
the song in spanish is great
lite 3
Wilco
3/5
we had something by these guys before right?
kinda intersting midwest styled rock with some character but also some american blandness.
avg 3, inoffensive but not particularly exciting
The Rolling Stones
3/5
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZW3jqFlnlo
anyways, sounds like the stones, not their best.
ehhh
Rahul Dev Burman
1/5
this firmly confirms i am not a bollywood fan
physical pain
Randy Newman
2/5
couldn't take the guy seriously as soon as i realised he did the toy story soundtrack
Kraftwerk
4/5
funky, bit slow and old skool but kinda cool
i like the three tracks from trans-europe express that all have the same train chuggy beat
cover art is banging. strong4?
Happy Mondays
1/5
fucking dreadful, they can go get bummed
Mylo
3/5
ok electronic, very disjointed and more of a collection of stuff than a proper album.
some of the sampling is a bit crap to be honest, average 3 across the record?
Iggy Pop
3/5
another iggie bowie collab eh?
its just fine, not as good as the other one, light 3
Tom Waits
3/5
perhaps his best we've had so far, the jazzy chat style works well with his voice
its probably not really a 4, a strongish 3?
Slade
3/5
fine, has the ac/dc kinda vibe where they're not taking themselves too seriously.
strong 3?
4/5
she's had a real redemption arc for me in this 1001 journey, the early stuff we got was horrid, this is much better. i liked "the whores hustle..." and the follow up track with the surprise thom york is gorgeous
would have to compare this side by side with the other stuff but in vacuum this seems like a light 4
Thin Lizzy
3/5
why is half of this missing on spotify :/
its fine, its stadium rock recorded live, you get what it says on the tin
Joe Ely
2/5
CAN I GET A YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAW
John Lennon
3/5
not that bad not that good easy to give it a 3 and fogettaboutit
Marvin Gaye
4/5
got more soul than jamie's olive oil
The Adverts
3/5
fine, not feeling very verbose today, its fine.
Iron Butterfly
3/5
nice solo, simpsons did it better tho
if i wanted to listen to this type of rock / metal i'd rather listen to sabbath and have it executed flawlessly.
not a bad record, just a bit unpolished.
light 3
The National
4/5
my friend likes the national but i never gave them a proper shot and found them a bit dull.
this is terrific, poignant songs and melodies and a very enjoyable listen. Not too depressing, but decently melancholy, nice vibe.
can't complain really. it's a strong 4? I don't know if it has enough appeal to relisten but i did 2 in one day and it was good fun.
Kraftwerk
4/5
very cool, light 4
Aimee Mann
2/5
woman with guitar, the epitome of average
giving it a 2 because it's so forgettable, i suppose it says "whatever" on the cover...
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
strong debut album, a few classics on here. strong female pop but sounds a little dated
i furiously hate the cover art, everything from the font, the colors, the composition, bare feet in the street
strong 3
The Undertones
3/5
classic english punk sound, short snappy stuff.
light 3
David Bowie
4/5
later career bowie is interesting and new to me.
the back half is very cool. light 4 good record
SZA
1/5
Roxy Music

clickbait cover, didnt enjoy the record that much, middling 2
Bob Dylan
3/5
can't believe he'd steal ideas for songs from death grips...
anyway, bit tedious at the starts but a few songs have their moments. average 3, not great as an album
Maxwell
4/5
never even heard of maxwell
strong 4, great r&b / soul, flew by
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
nice to put a sound to the name since i've heard of buddy holly (thanks weezer) but not listened
Massive Attack
3/5
fine? better on vinyl
first 2 tracks are good, spying glass is good, the rest is eh, the light my fire cover is painful
dont mind it when its on but would never pick this to listen to as an album i think, light 3
Dennis Wilson
3/5
nice variety of tracks, strong 3?
Slipknot
4/5
a bit unpolished but impressive that this came out in 1999, some great tracks. (edit: saying that, korn's follow the leader was out same year and that's in a similar style, though less hardcore)
the random DJ record scratches and bits are very funny (and are probably not meant to be)
one of their later albums would get a 5 from me but probably not this one, those have more nostalgia value
Astrud Gilberto
4/5
pleasant background music straight out of the sims with vocals added
light 4
Talking Heads
2/5
sounds like talking heads, could take it or leave it.
2.5
Slint
5/5
/mu/core /mu/core /mu/core
can't beat that first track, fantastic album
Dolly Parton
3/5
i gave the previous dolly a 2, this still is dolly and executed well,
hit at the right time so it gets a 3, wasn't that bad.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
ah fuck, the titular track is on the gta: san andreas k-dst radio, that's a nostalgia fest banger song to start with
somehow manages to hit the sweet spot between country and rock and roll to deliver something that is far better than it has any right to be.
probably just skewed because of the great opener. Still, it gets a 4
Kanye West
4/5
the phd line on "breathe in breathe out" killed me
you have to say no-one does it like kanye
i like last call especially the first half.
fav tracks: "get em high", "all falls down", "we don't care",
Public Enemy
3/5
flava flav is not in jail
all the songs start sounding the same after some point
Brian Eno
2/5
a bit too on the art side?
Stevie Wonder
4/5
casually puts this out as his 16th album...
strong stuff from steven, nice instrumentals, very nice
decent 4
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
nothing magic about this, there are some bits that sound vaguely promising but its just discordant noise for the other 98%
The Boo Radleys
2/5
sounds american despite being british
not sure what to call this. not a huge fan, generic rocky thing?
Fela Kuti
4/5
drums go hard, typical 4 bye bye
The Darkness
4/5
Justin has a great voice for this kinda band, nice polished modern take on glam rock.
Stolen from a youtube comment, but it's all killer no filler!
good range of songs from hype bangers to ballads.
light 4
Christina Aguilera
4/5
to be honest, wasn't expecting this to keep me listening for 77 minutes
some songs are a bit too poppy (i hate 'beautiful', it has been way overplayed on radios and adverts in the UK ) but the rest of this is actually really solid R&B
very surprised, light 4? I would listen again lol
The Electric Prunes
2/5
i find this album much like a prune. sweet and somewhat satisfying, but you don't find yourself saying "i really fancy a prune" or eating the whole bag in one sitting.
strong 2
Peter Gabriel
3/5
like a new wave genesis, with at times less annoying vocals
kate bush feature was a nice surprise
light 3
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
sounds a bit like the cure, nice gloomy aesthetic, a bit lame at times
lightly 3 probs not a revisit
Jean-Michel Jarre
4/5
knew the name from #4, nice classic to have and get to know on the list.
very cool example of what you can do with synths, light 4
The Human League
2/5
found this a bit dull and boring compared to some other new wave we've had, the instrumentals got stale in the songs pretty quickly? felt more like noise than music
2
Marilyn Manson
3/5
fine industrial, bit long, not a huge fan of the guys style.
light 3
U2
3/5
i dont think it's as good as joshua tree which i gave a 4, but it's definitely better than the stadium filler we've had from them on here because it has a bit of character and personality.
Harry Nilsson
4/5
I think I have heard "Without You" before. such a great track, and there's plenty of good stuff on the album too. coconut is so out of place though and almost makes me want to spite rate this 1/2.
fav tracks: without you,
hated tracks: coconut
it's a 4 if you skip coconut i would say
Linkin Park
4/5
oh to be 13 again.
meteora is better but this is a cool debut, some classics on here
Holger Czukay
2/5
but is it art or is it just random jam sounds held together by tasty, tasty glue?
persian love was good
2.5
Stan Getz
3/5
more sims soundtrack bossa nova
hard to dislike it but it's hard for this to impress. 3.5
Kanye West
3/5
not as good as the one we had recently, kinda passable to be honest.
3
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
feels like a demo tape, some cool ideas on here. not really a proper album though
Nine Inch Nails
4/5
great album, lots of stuff to sing along to, used to listen to this more back in the day.
falls off slightly at the end. 4+
fav tracks: piggy, heresy, march of the pigs, i do not want this
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
strong 3, probs some of the best the US has put out tbh
King Crimson
3/5
prog, not particularly engaging compared to some of their other stuff
Beck
3/5
feels like generic slightly edgy indie / alt rock, lands the same as the previous becks at an average, forgettable light 3
Stan Getz
4/5
girl from ipanema is a recognizable one
still sims music, significantly more jazzy than some of the others so it gets the mandatory jazz 4
David Bowie
4/5
rip bowie, went out continuing to be an artist and putting out quality new sounds.
pretty depressing but definitely something to listen to before you die
fav tracks: lazarus, girl loves me
Orange Juice
4/5
some funky moments on this, similar to talking heads but better?
decent 3 to light 4
fav tracks: turn away, I can't help myself (sax solo)
Kanye West
5/5
my pussy was reupholstered by yeezy
Pink Floyd
4/5
solid prog, don't get the giga hype though, it's a 4 not a 5 for me
Travis
3/5
reminds of Elliott Smith and U2, more energetic though. its fine. strong 3 for this late 90s indie rock
Baaba Maal
2/5
Senegalese deez nuts
Pink Floyd
3/5
hey it's that death grips sample, biattttttttch. i guess that's part of the reason they cant sell exmilitary
not particularly memorable or interesting beyond that
Stephen Stills
3/5
fine, it feels like there is probably a 4 hidden in there amongst all the filler.
Sonic Youth
4/5
these guys might be a highlight of the 1001 for me, love their aesthetic and I never would have listened to them beyond "kool thing".
great vocals, great guitars.
strong 4
Weather Report
4/5
if album.genre = "jazz";
album.rating = 4
fav tracks: teen town, palladium
Mike Ladd
3/5
instrumentals are a bit like deltron 3030 and show the most potential, bu definitely feels like a mix/demo tape rather than a complete album.
strong 3
fav tracks: bladerunners, no 1 st
4/5
they definitely were one of the tops bands of that time
Tight, punchy catchy songs with a distinct enough vocalist to stand out.
Origin of Symmetry is a perfect 5, this is nowhere near as good as a whole album unfortunately
fav tracks: starlight, knights of cydonia
light 4 on this
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
4/5
rattled me
pretty good, it's like a weezer but of the mid 80s
light 4
Scritti Politti
2/5
jangly michael jackson style poppy stuff
not a huge fan, strong 2?
Sonic Youth
3/5
interesting cover art
decent, and has their character, but not as compelling as their others we've had
strong 3
4/5
never heard of these guys but they brought some good stuff to the table
decent 4
fav tracks:
animal zoo, mr skin, space child, life has just begun
Madonna
3/5
really good until they slammed down the autotune and created the masterpiece that is "nobody's perfect"
without the autotune it would be pushing a 4 but those tracks are shocking
the difference between "Paradise" and "Gone" is night and day, it sounds like a different artist almost
american pie is a real cherry on the top of this as well
N.E.R.D
4/5
suprisingly good, didnt have high expectations somehow from the cover, it looks like hiphop but is actually full of clever tracks
not sure if i'd come back to it?
fav tracks: jump, she wants to move, breakout,
light 4
Cowboy Junkies
4/5
lullaby country & covers, i am falling asleep here
its both a 2 and a 4 at the same time, the songs are well executed, great singing, but it is very slow paced and hushed.
did a partial second listen and i think its another 4ski
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
is it as good as green river?
some classic tracks, but less nostalgia value on this one for me
strong 3
Hole
4/5
seems similar to their other one, palatable 90s rock. seems a bit older / punkier, "celebrity skin" was more modern sounding
female nirvana vibe on this one, light 4?
The Mothers Of Invention
2/5
definitely sounds like zappa had his paws on this one
experimental psych can easily go off the deep end and i think this does
in their words, "hot poop".
light 2
4/5
wow, cool record.
fav tracks: tantos desejos, na neblina, sereia, samba do gringo,
v strong 4?
Ute Lemper
2/5
bit slow, bit dull, feels dated for being from 2000(!)
waste of time
Bob Dylan
2/5
the death grips of jazz?
its just noise, too far off the jazz end
Miles Davis
2/5
oh no i fucked up the review for the bob dylan that was before this
===
the death grips of jazz?
its just noise, too far off the jazz end
Leonard Cohen
2/5
gloomy moody cohen
on the lower end of the stuff we've had from him
Frank Black
3/5
trash cover art
decent surf rock, pleasant enough, nothing to blow you away. avg3?
Skepta
4/5
pretty cool uk mandem represent grime ting...
man -> shutdown -> that's not me is smashing
i really dont like the vibe of numbers in the context of the album though, feels really out of place
light 4?
The Associates
2/5
ehhhhhhhhh
Kings of Leon
3/5
cool to see a side of these guys that is less "generic commercial rock" and something more unique
bit too "southern" banjo kinda thing
Serge Gainsbourg
3/5
yum, french spoken word
tolerable
Sigur Rós
5/5
a long time ago i knew someone with good music taste who listened to sigur ros, though never gave them a try then.
would it be better if it was entirely instrumental, or do the foreign vocals effectively act as another instrument?
hard to say. on first listen they were a little distracting on the earlier tracks.
(second listen edit: was chatting shit, the vocals work well)
it took a minute to get into fully, but it is very pretty, dreamy, charming music. worth sitting down and just listening to.
fav tracks: ny batteri, olsen olsen, agaetis byrjun
Fairport Convention
3/5
slightly better than filler folk? nice album cover art though
light 3
The Teardrop Explodes
3/5
catchy kinda new-wavy rock?
reward was a bop, avg 3
Snoop Dogg
4/5
hey the sample at the start of serial killa is in death grips (takyon)
some may call this crass or brash
but snoop dog's here 'cos he's not trash
a west coast sound gangsta is what you get
with funk and lyrics you won't forget
iconic sound of the 90s, light 4.2 for snoop
Happy Mondays
1/5
"madchester", really?
not very impressed, bob's yer uncle is particularly tragic
a big miss for me
3/5
sounds like a damon albarn album, pretty much what you would expect. avg 3
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
strong background hip hop, easy to vibe to, can't say i paid attention to the words as much as on say, snoops
strong 3 / light 4?
Kraftwerk
3/5
signature kraftwerk beep boop moog sound
train > car am i rite
can't really give this a 4, the other albums were just a bit better?
might be an ordering thing too, if we got trans-europe as the third album, maybe that would get a 3?
Radiohead
4/5
hmm
good, another one i think where the band has grown on me over time, so some of their earlier might score a bit higher?
feeling a strong 3 / light 4
Britney Spears
2/5
too catchy damn it
i can see the appeal of some songs but as an album it doesn't really do it for me
strong 2?
Anthrax
3/5
not a bad piece of thrash, pretty fun
like this big bowl of oats though, got a little stale towards the end
strong 3
Van Halen
3/5
those 6 years made a big difference, this feels a lot less dated than their s/t
maybe its all the synth
punchy short geetar fun, not sure its a 4 though
ZZ Top
3/5
hitting some real classic in the last few days, well. at least bands i have heard of
bluesy rock goodies, it really sits in the same zone as anthrax or van halen, I like the music and there's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't particularly wow or impress me.
Kacey Musgraves
3/5
cheesy but fairly minimalistic modern take on country pop with incredibly clean vocals
not getting a flannel out but its actually good enough for a 3
The Byrds
3/5
my previous comment of "budget beatles" still stands, why do we have 4 albums from these fucks on here
perhaps their most agreeable thing on here, almost interesting 60s psychy rock
still no more than a three tho
Richard Thompson
2/5
richard from the fairport convention eh
36 minute has never felt so slow
Sepultura
2/5
First track is classic but downhill from there
I think the vocals let this down
Marty Robbins
2/5
it's fine, showing its age
puts the camp in campfire?
strong 2
Suede
3/5
ok, blends in, not really sure its any better than the s/t we had
light 3?
Supergrass
2/5
maybe there's some radio hits on here but surely there's no way anyone would vote for this as the greatest of anything?
more mediocrity, it has some moments but otherwise its just eh
avg 2?
Led Zeppelin
5/5
it's got the song on it!!!
pretty good album, it only has decent tracks on it, and i've listened to it 3 times since yesterday...
i think im 5ing this
Moby
4/5
iconic electronic, some very recognizable tracks on here
strong 4, i don't think its cohesive enough for a 5 but its a good album for sure
John Lennon
2/5
not my thing
Nitin Sawhney
2/5
kinda dull, wikipedia kinda lied calling this drum and bass
disjointed and all over the place, has some moments but nothing that really got my attention on the first listen
Jamiroquai
2/5
they have some bops but i didn't hear any here, maybe it just came at the wrong time
Sinead O'Connor
1/5
nahhhhhhh didn't land at all for me
I Do Not Want This Album
Gram Parsons
2/5
maybe one day i'll look back on this list and think man, i miss the country
today however, nahhhhhhhhhhhh. its fine but not my thing
T. Rex
3/5
an interesting mix of rock trax, some upbeat and catchy, some ballady
avg to dece 3?
The Specials
3/5
dunno if this is really ska, some interesting vibes and tunes though
strong 3?
Nico
3/5
ok? i had some thoughts but they're completely gone
Tim Buckley
2/5
it is easy for folk rock like this to just wash over me and not make any particular impression
Hawkwind
4/5
nudity on album art??
*jaw drops to floor, eyes pop out of sockets accompanied by trumpets, heart beats out of chest, awooga awooga sound effect, pulls chain on train whistle that has appeared next to head as steam blows out, slams fists on table, rattling any plates, bowls or silverware, whistles loudly, fireworks shoot from top of head, pants loudly as tongue hangs out of mouth, wipes comically large bead of sweat from forehead, clears throat, straightens tie, combs hair*
anyway the albums the hawkwind classics performed well, albeit for 2 fooken hours
since we're evaluating this sober it probably peaks at 4
Tom Tom Club
3/5
respect the ideas, it starts too strong and the rest of the album doesn't live up to that
strong 3
fav tracks:
on on on, wordy,
The Rolling Stones
4/5
fine mellow stone stuff its dece?
Peter Gabriel
3/5
we get it peter, you were in genesis, get off my list
its a light 3
Nanci Griffith
1/5
the dolly parton style female stuff can be marginally more tolerable, but in short i am a false believer
The Police
4/5
iconic tunes and some other average ones, i like their sound
light 4
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
i know "heads will roll", i somehow did not expect this sound based on that hit track.
sounds like a punked up "metric" or similar. good sounds, fun record
light 4
Small Faces
3/5
remember to put in a funny joke about nuts before submitting the review
its just beatlesy rock with spoken word?
the bass on the first track was fun
rest was eh
Big Star
3/5
super soft stuff,
The Libertines
2/5
right geezer we're going to spoons to see if we can get some proper english lads to make a record
is how imagine this happened
has its moments but it has a general amateur aura, not in a good way
Antony and the Johnsons
2/5
first track is absolutely killer. the pause after it had me worried. the album continues and honestly, not sure if i like it from then on. it strays further from the vibe that first track set.
"what can I do" which uses a different vocalist was good..
giving this a 3 feels like it doesn't capture this album, its kinda either a 2 or a 4.
Throwing Muses
4/5
i love this, it's a very charming and well done punk album
no frills, wonderful clean vocals, simple punchy instrumentals
maybe 5ing it is a bit much, but i enjoyed this much more than anything on the list in a while
Elis Regina
2/5
the foreign vocals made this harder to appreciate, didnt do much for me.
Boards of Canada
4/5
muuuu coreeee
i always thought this had an aphex twin esque quality to it, though much much more mellow and chill.
the lyrics on aquarius are always a good laugh
it's definitely an excellent album, shame I already knew about it.
Strong 4, I think it's a bit too long and doesn't captivate me to get the full 5.
Thelonious Monk
3/5
harvey monkman?
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
🐰🐰🐰
fluffy and sleepy just like a bun, not super impressed. he has a nice voice but eh
light light 3
Paul McCartney
2/5
it's the sausage woman's boyfriend
> former member of the beatles
> genre: lo-fi
> mfw
its a guy with a geetar in a shed pumping out 2 min jams
he'll get a star for each of those minutes...
Malcolm McLaren
3/5
quack quack
a really odd selection of tunes, it's like one of those saharan cellphone mixtapes rather than an album
curious world music, strong 3?
Hot Chip
3/5
i like the electronic thing they do, but their vocals are always a bit creepy to m.
their hits like "over and over" are good, but i would rather listen to an album in this genre that isn't so jarring, i just dont like the singer
takes a 4 to a strong 2 / light 3 for me.
M.I.A.
3/5
pretty clever, sounds "old" to me though, that early 2000s vibe.
Rufus Wainwright
4/5
DreamWorks Records?
my man looks like a shrek side character on that album cover, and the opener trumpet certainly sets that medieval vibe
jokes aside, some quite nice, slow chamber pop which is a genre i do tend to like
light to decent 4 because there is actually very little wrong with it, it's just a little odd at first (like all good things eh)
fav tracks: oh what a world, vibrate,
The White Stripes
3/5
blue orchid is one of my fave tracks of theirs.
should they really have 3 albums on here?
really light 3, its modern and freshish take on rock though in this record it mostly sounds like they're copying the rolling stones / led zepp in a slightly hateable way
Abdullah Ibrahim
3/5
i think ive used "the sims" music as a term a few times, this is another mellow jazz style thing
pleasant, low key, nothing special? strong 3
Incredible Bongo Band
3/5
nice name, the fact it has a few covers reminds me of the ondatropica covers album with i ron man
strong 3
Dion
3/5
from hard bop to doo wop?
its just folk rock busker music, nothing crazy
Ian Dury
4/5
> pub rock
i really love the genres recently,
this could have been cringe but it's hit me at the right time, i love the british geezer's equivalent of the wurzels. god bless the 70s, who else could sing a song about getting girls drunk and giving them mdma?
light 4 for the hilarity
fav tracks:
billericay dickie, sex & drugs & R&R, wake up & mlwm
Suicide
2/5
pretty crap, even if they claim it influenced spacemen 3
Portishead
5/5
bristol massive represent, i think this is technically /mu/core too?
nylon smile into the rip is very nice,
the moog on 'the rip' is huge, also on "small"
fav tracks: nylon smile, the rip, machine gun, small, magic doors
deep water is the only weak track imo
Little Simz
5/5
i liked "sometimes i might be introvert" more (its a 5) but this is still awesome, surprised to see it on here given all the other country filler
perhaps in the context of the list i could 5 this, but its a light 5 if so
fav tracks: selfish
Astor Piazzolla
3/5
ayyyy can i getta piazzolla to go boss
kinda fun, not a conventional album though just a live concert recording.
a really light 3
Sarah Vaughan
4/5
have we had any female jazz?
this is great, though it lost me a bit on "How High The Moon" at the end.
Still, gets the jazz 4.
The 13th Floor Elevators
2/5
ehhh, psychy drivel
Carpenters
2/5
quaint middle class pop including covers
drier than weetabix. light 2
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
4/5
the acapella-ness reminds me of some polish sea shanty albums, shame i have no idea what they're saying, i think that puts a slight cap on foreign music.
strong 4 though
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
3/5
"the album was recorded after Spence had spent six months in Bellevue Hospital. Spence had been committed to Bellevue following a delusion-driven attempt to attack Moby Grape bandmates Don Stevenson and Jerry Miller with a fire axe"
perfectly forgettable man with geetar otherwise
Lou Reed
4/5
he does the cover of "perfect day" pretty perfectly
i first heard of lou on the plastic beach gorillaz album, its been interesting to see his history with the velvet underground etc..
the last track is a bit "toy story"
solid album, strong 4
Jazmine Sullivan
3/5
the cover makes it look like its some techno or something, was a little disappointed to find r&b inside.
wanted to hate on it but there's a couple of decent tracks on here. some of them are dire though, lows of 1.5 and highs of 3.5, i'd stretch to a light 3
Madonna
3/5
way better than the other Madonna we've had that's for sure.
it's quite slow and not in a great way most of the time, but the tracks are decent and inoffensive
avg3 ?
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
i mean he is iconic and he's put out some good rock but he's hogging a bit too much of the list really
strong 3 / light 4
The xx
3/5
what the fuck they have a third album i have genuinely never heard this before, i thought "on hold" was a jamie xx track, and i've heard "say something loving" but thought it was a one off single.
it does sound like a jamie xx record really, its a poppier, dancier version of the tracks they've delivered before.
still fun, but lacking the charm of the other 2 albums.
strong 3
Bill Callahan
4/5
nice, "country" label on wiki is almost unfair, it's just a solid good folk/folkrock album
great mellow vibes, light 4
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
fucken bunnies again
seems better than the other one we had, first track made a good impression for sure
avg3? slightly interesting and inoffensive
Stephen Stills
3/5
pretty good, definitely a few interesting tracks and more than just man with geetar
dece 3
Iron Maiden
5/5
iconic metal that defined a generation, an album of only bangers
its close to 5, very close, does it have a bad track?
i'll give it a 5, i think i'd always be happy to listen to this.
Minutemen
2/5
45 tracks of... something
i think one of these tracks gets used in jackass (corona?) and that's probably the best thing to say about this
Strong 3?
Silver Jews
3/5
the lead singer's story is pretty sad and it's definitely a depressing album, but it is essentially sad man with geetar
light light 3
5/5
Gonna try make the case why this is a 5.
Nostalgia - high school era album, listened tens of times, know the words
Genre - new take on nu-metal with a rap frontman, less serious than other bands
Fred Durst - love him or hate him, he defines the band and their style
Instrumentals - their guitarist is crazy good and the drums on this also rock. All the songs are catchy and the hits are bangers with an emoji b
Grateful Dead
3/5
it's fine, live albums are not my favourite most times anyway though this had more pull than most.
expected psychy drivel and got slightly more, light 3
Radiohead
3/5
definitely different, it sounds like the kind of album that might be incredible after 10 listens but on the first one there is certainly some odd bits
a bit too much noise and stuff. I wish I gave in rainbows a 4, having heard more of their repertoire
Christina Aguilera
1/5
but why is it 78 minutes long
it's not what i look for in female pop even though Ain't No Other Man, does slap
its the closest to a 1 we've had in a while, not a shred of desire to listen again
Scott Walker
3/5
not that bad, he's got a mighty voice on him
avg 3
fIREHOSE
2/5
doesn't do a lot for me i'm afraid
Public Enemy
4/5
FLAVOR FLAVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
a rap classic though some of the tracks get a little monotone with repetetive instrumentals. light 4
Tricky
4/5
a fine album, father of trip hop etc etc and so on but it needs a specific mood and even then it's not an "easy" listen which IMO is part of what makes a 5.
light 4 from me
Calexico
4/5
had low expectations, was very pleasantly surprised to get a world music kinda record with cool instruments
would listen again so gets a light 4!
fav tracks: "attack el robot!", "black heart", "guero canelo"
Gil Scott-Heron
2/5
his music is ok but the political thing gets old and isn't for me.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
it's not "come on eileen", they get their third 2 of the 1001, congrats!!
it's not really good enough for a 3 im afraid
American Music Club
1/5
bleh, garbage americana with the highs being mediocre man with geetar stuff
Bad Brains
4/5
surprisingly good, it's hard to describe the genre, it's like a groovy alt metal. sounds like an early 2000s record but its from '86!
i am not suprised wikipedia claims this inspired sepultura, there are similarities in the sound for sure. apparently also ROTM and dillinger escape which is very cool.
it is a strong 4? seems slightly crazy im considering 5ing it
Julian Cope
3/5
large selection of creative rock that is fine, bowie like at points even, but does not really impress at any point. you could probably condense this to a decent 45 minute album by trimming all the chaff
light - avg 3 on this one
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
4/5
kinda cute twinkling instrumentals, can't say i'm surprised to see brian eno was involved...
light to decent 4
Duke Ellington
4/5
tasteful jazz, eligible for the jazz 4 award
Mudhoney
4/5
sometimes names go too far and set up a negative first impression of the band
luckily the first tracks makes up for it pretty quick
pretty strong grunge performance, its not a titan like nirvana but enjoyable
light 4
4/5
pretty cool, sax on the title track goes hard, that track is a 5 the rest is not as good
light 4
Red Snapper
4/5
i have been satisfied, as the track says it is bussing
really unique selection of sounds, strong 4
Mudhoney
2/5
didn't we just have mudhoney?
not as good as fudge, bit rough round the edges. at least it's short
strong 2?
The Beta Band
3/5
falls off a bit, good instrumentals and vocals are ok but is just missing something
avg 3
Barry Adamson
4/5
nice, pretty piano and interesting concept, telling a story through an album with little words
the ambient instrumental vibes reminds of the twin peaks soundtrack (which should be on here tbh)
light 4
The Auteurs
3/5
its not even new wave, 0/5
fine rock you might hear on the radio and not think twice about
Daft Punk
5/5
i actually haven't listened to this album properly, im more of a "discovery" guy
that said, i have heard lots of the tracks in a "best hits" album.
strong electronic, very strong, lots of bangers, who needs a dj when you could slap this bad boy on
fav tracks: high fidelity, rolling & scratching, revolution 909, burnin, alive
White Denim
4/5
some sort of curious mismash of rock that sounds like fleet foxes, radiohead and imagine dragons and more all at the same time
sounds more like tracks than an album, at least after 1 medium attention listen?
little bit hectic but not bad if the mood is right, light 4?
Klaxons
3/5
new rave XD
golden skans was popular during its time, i remember that song, and of course "it's not over yet".
some classic british tunes to remind you of year 7 but not a lot of substance left behind
avg 3
Jeru The Damaja
2/5
very mediocre hiphop by the standards of the list
the closing track sums it up, "rhymes like semen"
The Streets
3/5
fucking hell i was not expecting this on here
i'll tell you what this is, its louiscore
its an interesting way of telling a story, the music is definitely pushing the definition of "music" at times with mike just chatting over a shitty beat
still, some tracks bang (blinded by the lights) and it has a certain british charm to it, for better or worse
avg-strong 3
Sabu
3/5
forgot to make notes when listening. some good tracks and some that are just drums being banged
avg 3
Scissor Sisters
2/5
lots of tracks that were popular in the uk, on the radio or in shows and tv adverts and shit like that
can't say i love their vocal style, ive always found it pretty annoying, drags an avg 3 down to a 2 for me
Garbage
3/5
at the beginning it sounds like rock that might play in a burger joint that you wouldn't really pay attention to
some of the tracks (e.g as heaven is wide, stroke of luck) later on get more interesting
strong 3? it's a slightly confused album genre wise
Santana
4/5
black magic woman is a great track, glad to see the rest of this album delivers the same quality
strong 4
Marianne Faithfull
2/5
almost agreeable but a bit naff, the last track is funny
Miles Davis
4/5
short and jazzy, light 4
Frank Sinatra
3/5
once again, it's unmistakably sinatra, what else can you really say
Joanna Newsom
4/5
I've listened to this before, it's folk /mu/core I think
her vocals are quite pretty, though slightly annoying at times. the harp is KILLER
light 4 if in the mood
Lupe Fiasco
3/5
i used to listen to "The Cool" a bunch, i don't think i've heard this record though.
sounds a bit dated especially compared to "the cool". fine for hiphop, the later album is deffo a 4, much better than this
avg-strong 3 on this
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
they could have probably left it in the metal box to be honest, its mostly a little bit crap
Neil Young
4/5
pretty good, hard to find any flaws in it. good mix of rock pop and folk. light 4
Dirty Projectors
1/5
just found it annoying to be honest, not a fan.
Cheap Trick
3/5
surrender is a classic track from them, there's some nice energy in this live recording so to be honest, it wasn't that bad
leaning towards a light-avg 3, might revisit this again in future if in the mood?
Fatboy Slim
3/5
reasonable electronic, he has quite a funky sound to the stuff he puts out, but i don't love some of the tunes. avg 3
Ms. Dynamite
2/5
im sick'n'tired of bland shit like this
3/5
musical cigarette, quick, nothing special initially but I could see myself getting into it if i had it a few times a day
avg 3
Grizzly Bear
2/5
two weeks is a classic track.
as for the album, if i had the patience for it i might appreciate it more, but on this listen it just sounded wanky and dull
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
actually ok by the standards of post-punk / new wave we've had on here. nothing mindblowing
not quite a 4 because nothing super memorable here
Fiona Apple
4/5
i guess i can now see why people had such a hardon for fetch the bolt cutters, since this is actually very good. i like it a lot more than bolt cutters which got a 4 though...
it's still a 4, a strong 4, not sure if her vocal style is my kind of 5
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
dive bar stuff, kinda harmless and sounds like REM
not really bad enough for a 2, definitely not good enough for a 4
Justin Timberlake
4/5
i always think of his collabs with lonely island which makes all of his songs sound like parodies to me.
some are a bit hard to take seriously but you have to admit it's a lot of killer pop tunes
The Residents
3/5
fucking hell one thing is for sure it IS art
almost tempted to 3 it, since there are elements of it which sound good
George Michael
3/5
strong 3 / light 4, probably not in a rush to listen to but he does do good music.
on par with faith so closer to 3.
Funkadelic
3/5
its fine, goes off the rail at times, avg-strong 3
Metallica
4/5
solid album, not my favourite of theirs though.
Korn
4/5
ah finally. one of the nu metal classics. how can you not love something that has a track with fred durst on it?
some of it is a little edgy (cameltosis) and some of it could have aged better.
still, solid 4
Pere Ubu
3/5
was gonna dunk on it and give it a 2 but it grew on me quite quickly, i would compare the vocal style to the dillinger escape plan
actually sounds surprisingly modern, strong 3 / light 4?
The Beach Boys
3/5
bit mellow, bit sleepy piece of psychy pop rock?
no real feelings about it, positive or negative. avg 3?
The Bees
4/5
it feels somewhat ironic listening to this beachy summer rock with 30mph winds and the rain slamming down on the windows.
very enjoyable, if it was sunny it'd be strong but still a 4, would play mtg to
Girls Against Boys
4/5
nice, from the name i expected something softer (and female vocals perhaps?)
very good, groovy rock record
strong 4
Kendrick Lamar
2/5
another unsurprising appearance. makes me think of harry hewer
backseat freestyle really sets the mood eh...
some good tracks (money trees, bitch don't kill my vibe) but the rest is mediocre to just plain cringe (backseat freestyle, maad city)
i like plini's version of poetic justice much more too :D the original seems hollow by comparison, but i heard plini's first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW_olfygAcs
Donald Fagen
4/5
was expecting some tom waits type shit from the cover and instead got a surprisingly peppy record, sounds like the talking heads.
the instrumentals on e.g "the goodbye look" are so chill
really fun, tight and easy listening, light to decent 4
The Rolling Stones
3/5
The rolling stones
sounds like generic 60s rock and roll. a bit bluesy and country like creedence at times which i suppose is what they were
sounds like the stones, lands in the forgettable "3" stones pile with 15 other records we've had from them
Arcade Fire
2/5
yay a third album from a band that has so far not impressed...
much of the same, they have that mumford and sons kinda indie sound that i'm not a fan of, maybe. something about the singer is off
light 2,
Dr. Octagon
3/5
funny that it came up around halloween since the theme is pretty spooky
reminds me of deltron 3030, i do like "themed" rap albums to be honest, when they're done well, there's some slightly odd tracks on this and it's a bit fucking long though
R.E.M.
4/5
this one has all the bangers, orange crush, stand, classic tracks
probably a light 4, they have their unique sound but surely everyone's heard of them by now
The Divine Comedy
3/5
was what is says on the tin, nothing particularly wowing for me on this one.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
see my previous comments on costello, they remain unchanged.
Kings of Leon
4/5
lots of hits, has the same U2 stadium kinda energy but with a bit more emotion on some songs, a modern take.
light 4
Can
3/5
it's alright but you get a track like moonshake where random noises just start happening in the middle of it and you really start to question what you're listening to.
Light 3
Os Mutantes
3/5
bit odd, no idea what to make of it actually
gonna give it a 3, its generally just noise on revisit
Björk
2/5
why does she have a chest pussy
it sounds like bjork, much like her other albums i just don't quite get it, though i like her voice and her samples on grips.
might unlock something after 5+ listens but that feels unfair to devote to some and not others on the list
Todd Rundgren
3/5
i remember absolutely nothing from his other album on here.
quite agreeable easy going pop music, go on, have a 3
Peter Tosh
3/5
but what does he want us to legalize?
reggae isn't great but it's not illegal anywhere, is it?
cliched rasta songs, good if in mood. light 3
Pantera
4/5
fuck yeah, though if this is on here does it mean "cowboys from hell" will be?
anyway, walk is an iconic track, some quality metal on this record
strong 4, its a bit too angry to be a quality 5
The Coral
4/5
i was wondering after the first track if this was the guys that did "dreaming of you".
for once, an album with a recognizable single on it actually has other redeeming qualities
quite enjoyable, id say it's slightly psychy and has a light sea shanty vibe to it at times. light 4
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
1/5
man it's too long, it just gets annoying after a few tracks.
The KLF
4/5
its good, it sounds like a random mix you took off nts or rinse fm, pretty much exactly what i was listening to before I put this album on.
avg-strong 4
Orbital
3/5
hey nice, let's see if it's as good as orbital 2
edit: it's not as good.
avg 3
The Killers
4/5
an anthem to british life apparently
lots of well written, soft rock tracks with a lot of charm and personality.
strong 3 or light 4, it does suffer from some of the tracks being overplayed to fuck and not often in the best situations (mr brightside at a clubnight anyone?)
The Beach Boys
3/5
hey its their classic album
some classic pop rock, what is there to say. strong 3, i wouldn't choose to have it on but wouldn't complain when it is.
Tim Buckley
2/5
well, he's gotten two 2's from me so far on the list.
and he's getting another one, strong 2 for this rather lacklustre man with geetar record
LTJ Bukem
4/5
hmm there are a few versions around. I listened to https://soundcloud.com/smittttcontact/sets/1996-logical-progression-ltj-bukem
very decent drum and bass, it has that slight "playstation" crisp and general 90s sound to it but that only adds to the aesthetic.
not perfect or particularly mindblowing but a solid 4 for sure
Traffic
3/5
its some psych rock, didnt care for it much. light 3
Simply Red
4/5
enjoyed these slow pop rock ballads a lot actually, its reminiscent of christmas songs / this cold time of year somehow.
great voice
light 4
Einstürzende Neubauten
1/5
tried to appreciate this a couple of times but it's too far off the rails.
Slayer
5/5
yess, huge album, this one is a certified classic. people might say it's just noise or that it all sounds the same but who cares, it makes your head bang
fav tracks: piece by piece, jesus saves, postmortem, raining blood,
Pere Ubu
3/5
definitely got the recognisable, jarring vocal style that we've had before from them before.
nice album cover.
still kinda fun, a bit whack. decent 3
The Zutons
3/5
what a zany album cover and name.
it sounds a lot like the 'my chemical romance' album they did where they sound like the hoosiers.
barely more than generic rock, light to avg 3, some of the tracks had a funky character but just a smidge too zany in the beginning
CHVRCHES
4/5
starts with a couple of bangesr, i'm pretty sure i have listened to this album before.
there's something annoying about the band that bothers me, hard to say exactly what. the backing vocals? the lead vocals? the synth sounds _slightly_ off sometimes? not sure.
strange since it should be right up my street.
light 4 for the album i think, its decent enough
Ananda Shankar
2/5
interesting record, not super keen on it. the covers feel odd
strong 2?
David Ackles
3/5
leonard cohen -esque ballads with interesting instrumentals. has a light musical vibe.
definitely decent for something so not my style, strong 3?
Ghostface Killah
3/5
a rap album from the wu-tang guy, kinda just washes over you at some point
light 3 / strong 2
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
3/5
would give this a low "yee-haw" two, but any album with a cocaine track gets +1 score automatically.
Jack White
3/5
less annoying than the white stripes, would consider 4ing this. decent rock record.
Death In Vegas
2/5
some nice ideas but probably not one worth getting out of the cupboard again
The Lemonheads
4/5
90s soft alt rock sound, quite nice. "hannah and gabi" sounds a little country...
might actually 4 this, there are some good tracks and nothing really too bad
fav tracks: confetti, rudderless (great track), big part,
The Dandy Warhols
2/5
sonically? fine but the songwriting and themes are a bit lacking so it all falls a bit flat for me.
light 2
The Roots
2/5
eh, unimpressive hip hop, certainly didnt come at a great time. avg 2
Roxy Music
3/5
some random camp rock, some good tracks (In Every Dream Home A Heartache stood out) but some are pretty weak. light 3
Bebel Gilberto
3/5
bossa nova = sims music,
Steely Dan
4/5
it's not aja but it's another very enjoyable steely dan record.
decent 4
Minor Threat
3/5
short blast of punk, s'alrite innit
Soft Machine
3/5
starting with the live track doesn't really set this up for success. a dank and unpolished jazz prog frenzy,
some good moments but some questionable ones, light3 / strong 2
The Cult
4/5
very solid 80s classic rock, cant say much wrong about it (except perhaps the born to be wild cover being a bit soulless)
strong 3/light 4
The Offspring
3/5
cant say i love their style / vocals especially. some good tracks especially the ska style ones (what happened to you?),
avg 3 overall i think, it is a classic that might need some time to get used to
Van Morrison
3/5
big boomer kinda rock stuff, its fine, really really light 3.
Ali Farka Touré
4/5
strong 3 / light 4 world music.
nice as a "once in a while" oddity kinda thing.
4/5
the guy is from swindon...
some of the songs are art for sure, some are just good though ("knights in shining karma"). "your dictionary" is quite witty but a little cringey.
all in all strong 3 / light 4, interesting record with some creativity to it
Guided By Voices
2/5
"let's put 28 mediocre 1 min long demos on an album and call it a day"
Arrested Development
2/5
its a strong 2, some good beats (e.g "U") but not for me
John Cale
4/5
an art pop record that doesn't suck ass, not bad!!!
light 4, it was inoffensive enough to get in my good graces today
The Cardigans
4/5
the "iron man" cover is completely deranged.
vocalist reminds a bit of "metric"
sounds like fairly modern slightly quirky pop, strong 3 / light 4?
was gonna be a 3 until lovefool came on, what a choone
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
5/5
ain't nothing like a gang bang
Afrika Bambaataa
1/5
i prefer the rage cover of "renegades of funk".
yeah this is just dated whack, not feeling it!
Kings of Leon
3/5
the sound you kind of expect from them at this point, since they've been on the list a few times.
strong 3, something interesting, not fully to my taste.
Sepultura
4/5
out of all the metal in the world do we need two albums from these guys?
unlike "roots" this doesn't have so much of a unique sound, it just sounds like (was gonna say budget but it's not actually bad) metallica.
if we have this shit and not "ride the lightning" on here that's tragic...
strong 3 to light 4 perhaps? can you 4 an album with "orgasmatron"? probably unfair to give it a 3, it's fairly good.
TV On The Radio
4/5
it has a familiar sound that im struggling to place.
"staring at the sun" is a beautiful track, a real hair raising, goosebump quality to it, between the distorted guitar and vocals.
it's a shame the rest of the album doesn't pack the same punch but it's still very enjoyable.
strong 4
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
costello :(
the 6th album from him fails to change my opinion, light 3
Tom Waits
4/5
hey there's a 2023 remaster of it so it's gotta be a classic
i've heard a few of these tracks (in the neighborhood, underground)
it is probably his most charismatic record we've had, the style of this uses his unique voice better than the others.
was really easy to get on with, decent-strong 4
k.d. lang
4/5
was ready to slag it off as "yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee haw im from tennessee"
but its actually some of the more tasteful country / singersongwriter we've had
light 4, pretty singing
Super Furry Animals
4/5
sounds like mogwai / gorillaz blend, interesting stuff
light-mid 4
Adele
5/5
classic, would say it's not to my tastes so i can't 5 it but then the lovesong cover slaps on and i'm cooked
as an album it is very hard to fault.
Sleater-Kinney
4/5
ive heard the name a lot, and i think they have a new album out soon since there's a single thats been getting some radio 6 play time.
short snappy (fairly soft) female punk rock, the songs are tight, interesting and each somewhat different so it was fun to listen to. light 4
Love
3/5
vocals are annoying af at the start, the final jamming track is fairly good
light 3
Django Django
3/5
django
strong 3 indie alt rock kinda deal, doesn't have the charm of alt-j or fleet foxes while in a similar sound space.
Robert Wyatt
4/5
of course it's got brian eno on it.
slow boomery prog, light 4?
Dead Kennedys
5/5
punk classique
holiday in cambodia is a guitar hero 3 staple as well. very strong punk showing, feeling a light 5 on this one, would love to listen to it again, there's so many bangers
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
3/5
ok bluesy punk stuff, some wack (fuck shit up) and some decent (wail)
Coldcut
3/5
opening track: vibrant, bouncy party house. great!
rest of it devolves into slightly tedious electronic.
perhaps there's a reason most electronic releases are just 2 / 4 track EPs
devolves into a rather mediocre 3 as an album overall unfortunately.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
i hate the right ear percussion on "the boxer" actually.
beyond that, this is exactly what you would expect from S&G, difficult to find many faults in it, still i'd give this a strong 3, the others were more enjoyable
The Vines
2/5
fairly generic rock with some variety of tracks and lack of clear identity or appeal
nothing really stood out to me, strong 2 which seems harsh
Johnny Cash
4/5
good album, but "folsom prison" has some magic to it that this doesn't quite.
The Byrds
3/5
country with some real tasteful banjo, strong 3
Dagmar Krause
1/5
yum, avant-garde cabaret. opera-esque... quite something
in short, not for me!
4/5
i dunno what determines whether one of these "noisy" albums sounds good or like complete ass, but this sounds pretty great
reminds of some of daughters stuff, interesting percussion and riffs, keeps you on your toes. fun listen, strong 4
Brian Wilson
1/5
he might be the beach boys fella but I don't love them in their prime, this is just a 60 year old man making arty farty pop and it sounds bad!
just listen to this version of "good vibrations" and the OG.
Maybe for beach boys fans this has some merit, for me it does not.
Blood, Sweat & Tears
3/5
what an incredible opening with the flutes
the organ on later tracks (blues pt2) is fun, not terribly polished in places but a fine album, mid 3
G. Love & Special Sauce
3/5
drums hitting you in the face!
cool jam session type record, strong 3
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
classic pet shop boys sound. Don't have time to listen to "very" again to see if it compares but another strong 4, very nice record.
The Beta Band
3/5
ok indie electronic rock outing,
some tracks like "space beatle" were a bit cheesy
average 3?
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
2/5
first track recognisably has sinead o connor on it so thats nice, a bit dreary though
interesting ideas on some of the tracks but not something i feel obliged to revisit, mostly because of the really crappy electronic drums.
strong 2
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
he's had a bunch of stuff on here, this is the first album that actually got my attention, really cool punky country ballady blues stuff, very atmospheric with his voice
avg 4 on this one
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
4/5
i would call myself a gorillaz fan, but who knew that there was a damon albarn supergroup album?
demon days is one of my fave classic albums and this carries a lot of the same energy from Damon, with all the twangy acoustic guitar bits.
fun listen, not 5 material though since it feels like a demo tape really.
Bert Jansch
4/5
man with guitar, strong emotion in his voice
light 4, good for the style actually

nice mellow indie rock, some good rainy day instrumentals (e.g sea song) that remind a bit of porcupine tree, actually
i though the opening of `"a house" was hilarious
strong 3 / lite 4?

"gold" got a light 3 from me, been a while to do a side by side and anyways, its generic nashville geetar man, what is there to say.
avg to decent 3, some tracks have good emotion to them (oh my sweet carolina, bartering lines) and don't have the usual overplayed country instrumentals
