Samba rock!? I love this album. A lot of different genre blending (funk, jazz, Afro soul, Rock). My perception of samba up to this point has been Stan Getz and his soulful acoustic music and soft voice while Jorge Ben is the polar opposite. Beats are catchy and the guitar work is impressive. Wish I could speak Portuguese so I could understand what he is saying. Will be listening to this one again 4.5/5
Love the commentary from Cash and the story behind the album. Great songs and a great live recorded album. 4/5
Guitar go fast
The Beastie Boys debut album is packed full of testosterone and misogynistic lyrics. Listening through the album I can’t shake this image of a 24 year old frat bro chuggin beer along to the beats. Yes I understand this was a very influential album (one of the first white rap albums with mainstream success) influencing countless future musicians but lyrics like: “Your mom threw away your best porno mag” and “Girls, two at a time” make my eyes roll. Pretty sure they bring up White Castle so often that I had to see if there was a reason for it but I guess they really just like White Castle. I did enjoy “Paul Revere” and to the albums credit the beats and samples are very catchy. But besides that I guess it’s not my type of music I guess… 2.5/5
Not my favorite steely Dan record (more pop than rock or jazz) but still so catchy. 3.5/5
Although the songs are repetitive, it’s pretty apparent this was the backbone that the mid 2000’s Dubstep scene was built off, inspiring some of the top artists like Diplo, Noisia, Excision, etc. I see a lot of people bashing this album with the justification that the songs are boring, but these are songs meant to be played LOUD. If you can’t hear the bass you are missing out. 3/5 Favorite tracks: Dirge Death Threat One More time
Fantastic album and Kate Bush’s most accessible. This album has really grown on me. You could draw a lot of parallels to the music of Pink Floyd which makes sense seeing as David Gilmour was the one who discovered her. The instrumentation piano/synths/drums/ lyrics are all excellent
To Leonard Cohen, music isn’t so much about instrumentation but more over lyricism. Most of the tracks were very dark and Cohen’s voice isn’t the most pleasant thing to listen too at points but that doesn’t take away from the lyrics which are pretty dark. 3/5 Favorite Tracks: Bird On A Wire The Partisan The Old Revolution Tonight Will Be Fine
I was really surprised because I was expecting this to be a dark gloomy album based on the title track which I have heard many times but the genre is more ska punk/ reggae. I really dig it and see why the album gets the praise it does! Reminds me of Parquet Courts and early Modest Mouse Favorite tracks: Spanish Bombs London Calling The card cheat Wrong Em Boyo 4.5/5
All the song sound so similar and I did not enjoy the style 2/5
If I hear the phrase “Showroom Dummies” or “Trans-Europe Express” again I’m going to lose my mind. Most songs are just the same phrase repeated over and over. Early electronica is pretty important and was influential in a lot of mainstream artists as well as development of synths in the 80’s but the album feels so mechanical and dull. 2/5
After hearing the first song I was dreading having to listen to the full album but was presently surprised after the first track. A pretty fun blues rock / soul album. 3.5/5 Favorite Tracks: Has my fire really gone out Wild Wood Instrumental 1&2
I am torn on this album. I don’t enjoy the spoken word style singing and low monotone singing that is 80% of the album but when Cope really goes for it, it makes the song like on double vegetation which gives of an early R.E.M vibe. The real star of this album is the distorted shredding guitar. I absolutely love the jam solos on these tracks. The album itself seems a little bloated with 18 tracks clocking in over 1 hour 15 minutes. Favorite tracks: Double Vegetation If you loved me at all Leperskin
This album made me sad. Not because I didn’t enjoy it, but because it really is a shame that Joplin died so young. The enthusiasm and soul that she can sing on a track is absolutely unparalleled. I don’t think there was a single song I didn’t enjoy. The opening track “Move Over” is a perfect introduction to the album. The vocals missing “Buried alive in the Blues” is haunting. Then “Me and Bobby McGee” plays like a Dolly Parton song and I love country shift and the lyrics freedoms just another word for nothing left to loose. 5/5
Ready good party music
All about war
The positive N.W.A I like the almost spoken word portions sung on “Children Play with Earth”. “Mamas always on stage” is a jam. Fun funky album 3.5/5
I really enjoy this album. It is creative and a few of the songs are pretty mid 2000’s iconic. I think the muse get a bad wrap because their newer music is no where near their old stuff, and because of this people dislike this album. I can understand hating this album because you played Knights of Cydonia on guitar hero a couple thousand times but for me, Matt Bellamy’s voice is solid and I miss the old Muse 4/5
Better than expected
I had higher hopes for the album since I’d heard American girl before, but the album felt forgettable and I didn’t particular enjoy Tom Petty’s voice
Was expecting more being a fan of Paranoid and the self-titled album. I am not loving the stoner metal sound and I feel like “Changes” doesn’t really fit in this track list. Favorite songs: Supernaut Laguna Sunrise
This album really drives home the point of the project. If I didn’t have to listen to the full album I would have turned it off after the first song. But listening to the full album changed my perspective. The instrumentation is really interesting. I don’t enjoy the lead singers voice very much on certain tracks as well.
Rock Opera
I’ve listened to this album so many times but am still excited to listen to it. Still not my favorite Radiohead album but top 3. 4.5/5
