A truly beautiful record. The fact that this was leftover tracks that were released as an album blows my mind because the composition seems so clean and intentional. Nina Simone's vocals resonated with the lyrics and helped to convey the raw emotion in each song. Great album to put on and relax at the end of a long day.

This is a great album. I've never delved much into Run-DMC, but this style of early rap is definitely one of my favorites. The lyrics were fun and the instrumentals were amazing. The album goes in many different directions, to some lyrics genuinely being somewhat comedic and others being very genuine and heartfelt. It's just all in all a very well-rounded album and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Leonard Cohen is often labeled as one of the most influential musical artists of all time. His lyricism, his vocals, his instrumentals, many people are just drawn to it. This album is no exception. This album was right up my alley. I've never delved deeply into Leonard Cohen's discography, but after this album I think that'll change. The songs range from hauntingly warm to beautifully cold. Cohen just has such a way with words and notes, this is undoubtedly one of the best albums I have ever heard.

Black Sabbath is iconic and I do enjoy listening to them, while not being overly familiar with their discography. This album has some great tracks, but what really stands out to me are the instrumentals. They just resonate so well, they sound grimy in a very calculated way. Fuzzy in a very precise way. Ozzy when compared to other vocalists is not the best, but his voice is instantly recognizable and iconic and fits perfectly with the vibe that Black Sabbath cultivates on this record. I do think though that this record is weaker than some of the other stuff I have heard from them. However, since this is my first full Sabbath record I am keeping an open mind.

A truly great album, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds do not disappoint. However, I feel like Nick Cave's vocals are not for everybody. Its composition was beautiful.

This is your standard 70s classic rock album. For me, this album was a nice listen but nothing really "leapt" out at me after the two recognizable tracks. R&B is not really my thing, so already that was difficult, but I went into this with an open mind. And while the lyrics were beautiful, I found the style of the vocals detracted from the lyrics. This album was honestly a tough listen. I love their cover of "Tainted Love," and expected something of similar calibre. But, the lyrics at many points were nonsensical. The vocals were grating at times, and many times it sounded like the vocals and the instrumentals were working against each other. However, this was the 80s, which was a VERY different time. To me though, this album really just sounded like noise with no real rhyme or reason behind them. Just noise for the sake of noise.

Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Standout Tracks: "No Action," "This Year's Girl," "Pump It Up," "Little Triggers," "Lip Service," "Lipstick Vogue," "Radio, Radio"
Lyrics/Vocals- 3/5 (lyrics great, Elvis Costellos vocals hit or miss)
Instrumentals- 4/5 (lot of songs sounded similar

Overall- 4/5
Whenever I think of Elvis Costello I think of him getting banned from SNL for playing "Radio, Radio" even after Lorne Michales specifically said not to and to play "Pump it Up" instead. Costello went against this request because he felt that the American public would relate to "Radio, Radio" more. He was banned from SNL for the switch up, then when he was unbanned he pulled the "same stunt" with the Beastie Boys. Anyways, all of the Elvis Costello I have heard in my life was from this album, and I understand why now. This was a great listen. Very upbeat, lots of great tracks, and lots of talent is apparent on this record. Elvis Costello's voice is hit or miss often times. I've always felt that his vocals are very "full of himself," if that makes any sense. Sometimes it fits the song, other times it was a little bit grating or difficult to listen to. Regardless though, you can really understand why Costello is held in such high regard by many rock lovers by listening to this album. It's poppy, catchy, and fun, but when you listen to the lyrics you can understand the message behind them.

As another review mentioned, this album is really a product of its time and does a lot better with context. I highly recommend reading that review as I will not be going into it, but reiterating one of their main points: This album is heavy on the lyrics. When just listening to the album I felt very disinterested and did not care for it. But watching the lyrics and taking in the message that they are trying to convey is truly the best way to listen to this album. In terms of its sound, I was not overly impressed. The mixing and tracks were good, production as well, but it didn't feel outstanding. As I said earlier though, this is a product of its time. This album, and Public Enemy in general, were extremely influential to many hip hop groups and musicians over the years, and that influence cannot be understated and you can really see that in this album. Overall it was a good listen and I understand why it is on this list, but it wasn't really for me.

First of all, I love Radiohead, and this is the first album that I have received on this list that I've already heard. Now that we've got that settled, my first listening to this album was about a year ago and I was not super impressed. It was by no means a bad album, but it just didn't stick out to me. In my listen for today, my opinion has changed slightly. I do like this album a bit more than I did originally, but some people would say this is Radiohead's best album and I have to disagree. It has some really good tracks on it, but it is a huge departure from their normal sound. At the very least it is a departure from one of their more acclaimed albums, "OK Computer." This album is a lot more experimental, but I don't have any issues with that. This album struck a different chord on my second listen, I was able to appreciate more of the production aspect and really take it all in. Thom Yorke is an amazing vocalist with hauntingly beautiful lyrics. The instrumentals feel very "dreamlike" and are very well done. The vibes are amazing, although turning on Radiohead at any kind of social function is kinda hit or miss so I'd definitely not do that for this album.

This will likely get buried under the Clapton Hate reviews, but I am not basing my opinions on this album off of how shitty of a person Clapton is. However I am basing it on how shitty of an album it is. Clapton is know for being an excellent guitar player, yet none of that was demonstrated in this album. His cover of "Hand Jive" is probably one of the absolute worst covers I have heard in my entire life. "I Shot the Sheriff" wasn't as bad as some people say it is, but obviously does not hold a candle to Bob Marley in any shape. The opening track was the best track on the entire album, and the rest was just... there. It did feel very soulless, which is ironic given the amount of soul in blues and how bluesy this album was. I found myself bored, nothing stood out and it just droned on. It was wooden and plain. It's not a very good album.

To tell you the truth, this album was instrumentally very beautiful. It was produced insanely well, and that's something that stuck out most to me. It seemed like some of these songs were multiple songs wrapped in one, and it wasn't a bad thing. One of my favorite genres is 70s rock because it just has such raw talent and emotion woven into it. That said, this album was somewhat forgettable. The standout tracks to me were very strong, but a lot of songs generally felt like filler. But nothing is better to me than an album you can turn on and just relax to.

This album was weird, to put it simply. Randy Newman is often times associated with Disney, and truthfully I can see why he's made so many songs for Disney. His music just has that feeling to it. It was by no means a bad thing, but it does I feel detract from the album itself when you're constantly thinking of Toy Story while listening to this album. The album felt humorous in many ways and I could sense some satire in some of the songs on it, but if you can't get past the "Disney vibes" then this will be lost on you. I think overall this album was okay. It was fun, but I wouldn't consider it one of the best albums of all time.

Avant garde is not for me, but I figured I'd give this a try. Holy shit I tried... it's a cacophony of noise. It sounds like somebody rubbing balloons together and stepping on rubber ducks while someone else fills a dryer full of loose change. My cat hated it. I let a few YouTube ads play all the way through just to get a break from it. That said though, it takes a level of impressiveness and talent to improv in such a way. This album was not for me, and I know very few people who would actually like this album if any at all. But, if you're looking for a quick way to end a college party then look no further.

I did enjoy this album pretty well as I am a fan of RATM. However, something that really stood out to me, having never listened to a full album before, is how similar all of their songs sound. Obviously the songs aren't all the same, but they were all so similar they kind of blended together, which did detract from the album a bit. However, the lyrics were powerful, along with their delivery and just sheer anger/angst. The instrumentals were amazing with the bass lines sticking out most to me. RATM has a very unique sound, and I am not shocked they're on this album. This isn't an album you turn on to relax, it's an album you turn on to get mad. All in all a great album.

Hole has some really good tracks, and this album in particular has some really good songs. The lyrics are deep, impactful, and punchy. They really portray anger and frustration at essentially what it's like being a woman, and more specifically what the expectations of being a woman are especially if you're somebody famous. However, Courtney Love's vocals did pull me away from the album at times. Even if being off-key is a part of conveying that emotion, it does really pull you away and make it harsh to the ears. However, the vast majority of songs were the angry, gravelly vocal style of your average grunge singer. The instrumentals were great, and overall this was a good album. You can tell that Kurt Cobain was involved in a variety of ways and the instrumentals themselves sound like Nirvana. Listening to the lyrics for the messages changes the experience tremendously. If you are a fan of grunge or riot grrrl music then this will appeal to you.

This album is a weird one to rate. The slower songs are the ones that appeal to me the most, but on the other hand the harder songs are so full of rage and anger that I feel like it's really jarring, going from the soft "1979" to the angsty, rage-filled "Tales of a Scorched Earth" for example really messes with the flow. However, despite that I would consider this album to be a masterpiece. It's a long album, at 2hrs and 5 minutes. It's a great listen all in all. Definitely one of those albums where it may not be for everyone though, but if you're really into that grungey sound or that just rage-filled piss and vinegar type sound then this is for you.

I was surprised to see this album on the list, as the soundtrack to "The Virgin Suicides." While never seeing the movie, I know its premise and the music definitely reflects that melancholy feel of the movie. The music itself is very relaxing instrumentals, minus "Suicide Underground" and the opening track. Arguably the most haunting is the last song, which reflects the end of the movie and tells the ending. The opening track was a beautiful track, with amazing lyrics and lo-fi vibes. All in all, there wasn't much that stood out because this was all background music. However, I did really enjoy this album.
