Willie Colón & Rubén BladesI felt like I was on vacation on some island paradise, drinking a cocktail and listening to the local band. Good vibes.
I felt like I was on vacation on some island paradise, drinking a cocktail and listening to the local band. Good vibes.
Interesting listening as I’m more acquainted with his more popular songs from his Let’s Dance album. Dare I say this is pearls before swine as I’m not a huge Bowie fan.
Loved the first song, Maggot Brain. The guitar licks reminded me of Jimi Hendrix. The rest of the album felt repetitive and at times cacophonous.
I was expecting the quintessential guitar licks that Hendrix is known for. What surprised me was the poetry of his lyrics especially in the track If 6 was 9.
Quintessential misogynistic, angry rap. Obviously he hit a chord with many young men who used his rhymes to validate their own lives. Not sure if Eminem was playing a character or sublimating his own life story. Perhaps a bit of both.
Repetitive. Screeching. Dark and depressing. Not a fan of this genre so its “magic” is lost on me.
What a treat! It’s been awhile since I listened to Joshua Tree. Ah the memories!!! I’ll be honest, I never got past the first three tracks because they were just soooo good. But today, I listened to the entire album. I understand why it launched U2 into stardom.
Nope. Can’t get past the screeching guitar and screaming lyrics. I know Punk Rock is a music genre but why?????
Except for Music and Don’t Tell Me, I never heard any of the other tracks. Auto tune seemed to be the trend for this album which was disappointing.
Felt “other worldly” with the electronic elements sometimes I felt like R2D2 was in the background. Haha. I did like “Do You Realize” I recognized from somewhere although I can’t place it.
Love Coldplay! The three hits on this album, “the Scientist”, “Clocks” and “In my Place” were my favorites. The rest of the album’s tracks felt unremarkable in comparison.
An eclectic mix of music genres for sure. I think Malcolm was having fun creating blends. Not for me.
Love the simple acoustical guitar. Haunting lyrics, some apropos for our current times. Perhaps reminiscent of Bob Dylan.
Classic Ray Charles. Love when it’s just him and the piano. “I can’t stop loving you” brings back memories of listening to this song with my Aunt Annie. I get how the string instrument intro was standard for the times, but it was annoying. Background singers felt like listening to the Lawrence Well show. Just Ray and the piano. That’s all there needs to be.
Interesting personal story about the artist and his comeback from a tragic accident which left him paralyzed. Experimental rock is something new to me. I kind of think of it as the parallel to abstract art?? Didn’t really enjoy much of this album until I heard the haunting jazz notes of September the Ninth.
Gotta say the woman can belt! Was “Hello” overplayed to the point it became a meme, yes but whoa so good. I thoroughly enjoyed this album!
I’ll admit I never heard anything besides Old Man and Heart of Gold before this venture. It was a good first listen.
With the first track, Juanita,I can totally imagine a sea of bouncing humans vibing to this techno feast and then everything gets turned on its head with the second track, Banstyle, so cool and easy. Quite the eclectic mix of sounds although I found the repetitive nature of the rhythms tiresome after the first few minutes.
Folk music fans would love this album. Haunting voices coupled with a variety of melodies made this an enjoyable first listen. And I’m not a folk music fan!
Wow this brought back memories of high school. P-Funk and Give Up the Funk were favorites.
Hmmm. I heard a couple of these songs as background on a couple of early reels my daughter created back when she was a teenager. Best in the background.
Was looking forward to hearing this album because I was obsessed with “I’m not in Love” and “The things we do for love” when I was in high school. What a disappointment.
Heavy dose of electric guitar and repetitive rhythms left me wondering what so appealing about the British rock scene?
I was surprised by the heavy bluesy honky-tonk influence within so much of this album. It gave me a new perspective of The Stones music.
Meh. Twangy. Not a fan.
I was first introduced to Suzanne Vega from her pop hit, Tom’s Diner. I was excited to hear this album. Her speak/sing voice reminds me of Joni Mitchell.
I’m sure there are plenty of listeners out there who’d appreciate this group’s experimental sounds. I’m not one of them.
Great first listen. I really enjoyed the irreverent lyrics! Quite hilarious at times.
So many good memories with these songs. Not happy with the alternative version of Teach Your Children, but that’s just me.
Soulful for sure. Wasn’t expecting all the storytelling. An interesting first listen.
Except for Smoke on the Water, I didn’t enjoy this album.
Unfamiliar with many of these songs. It is a tribute to how powerful sublimation can be as a means of dealing with tough life circumstances like divorce.
Reminds me of honky-tonk rhythms that I imagine I’d encounter if I went back in time to a bar in the rural southern U.S. Not my genre, but an interesting listen.
I get how it is innovative and led the way to today’s synthesized music. But it doesn’t mean it’s a great listen.
Kashmir was on constant repeat in my dorm hallways in college— especially on Friday afternoons. Was pleasantly surprised by the instrumental, Bron Yr Aur. Didn’t know they had it in them.
Get it on was the only song Inwas familiar with. Pleasantly surprised with the other tracks. A fun first listen.
Really couldn’t connect to anything in this album.
Rock the House-amusing lyrics Star Shine-haunting Clint Eastwood-catchy, playful 19-2000-love this song!! Couldn’t stop dancing! Fun first listen.
ELO! College daze. Memories! ❤️
Boomer here. Can’t relate.
Yes!!!!! Another college fav! Every song. Magic. THIS album truly deserves to be on this list.
Classic Bowie. I’d recognize his quintessential sound anywhere. None of his classics, but still an enjoyable listen.
Interesting instrumentals. Kinda spooky at times. Love the experimental orchestrations. Different from what I’d expect.
Not a fan of synthesized music but I see the seeds of today’s techno in this album.
Was looking forward to hearing this until I realized my favs: Call Me, Rapture and The Tide is High weren’t on this album. I wish we could just listen to “the best of” compilations.
I was eight years old when this album dropped. I remember waiting for the radio station to play “Everyday People” or “I want to take you Higher”. Lots of big hair and protest songs back then. I really didn’t understand what was going on with the Vietnam War, I just knew my big sister’s friends were getting drafted and she was sad.
Is it just me or did every song sound eerily similar?
Not my genre so I say 😕
Ugh! So much screaming. I know the band is iconic. But eh.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Now we’re talking. Beautiful music and soulful lyrics. A classic.
I can hear a little George Harrison influence here—which is nice. But the album sounded too repetitive to me.
Angry. I get that. But it unsettles me. I prefer music that inspires rather than enrages.
Nope.
What a treat. Brought back good memories. Loved the easy flow of Babylon. First time hearing other songs I would listen again 😊
Amazing album! How did I miss this one when it first dropped? Love the eclectic vibe of soul, a little funk, and R&B.
Meh. Not my genre.
I don’t get it.
Feeling the Elton John touch with this album. Several songs felt like he was a major influence in their composition. A good first listen.
It’s not my genre.
Too repetitive for me.
Quintessential Johnny Cash. Seems like he curated sings especially for his audience at Folsom Prison. So many songs were about circumstances that probably spoke to many who were incarcerated.
My only exposure to Rush was from the movie, “I love you Man” with Paul Rudd. His character was OBSESSED with Rush. An interesting first listen.
So happy to see this album come up. I have used three of Moby’s songs in my yoga classes: Porcelain, Natural Blues and Everloving. Each time I put Moby in a playlist, I have students come up after class to ask who I played.
Loved listening to the classics with a Willie Nelson flavor. Such a treat!
I remember Def Leppard blasting down the halls in my college dorm. Head bangers playing their air guitars. I get they are legendary. Just not my genre.
Lots of Boston heard at my college. Really enjoyed this walk back in time.
I know it’s iconic. Not my genre.
REALLY repetitive. Not a good listen.
Well before now, I’ve never been exposed to “industrial music”. Hopefully, this will be the only time I have to listen to such crap.
Was hoping to hear some of Queen classics with this album. Disappointing.
Repetitive. Did remind me a little of the background music of the old television show, Gunsmoke.
Not a fan. Even when this came out. Not my genre although I appreciate TLC was a big deal.
Meh
Nope.
Iconic band. Was expecting more.
Lo-fi and electronic music seems to be my flavor right now. Good first listen.
Scratchy. Repetitive. Not my genre for sure.
Not a fan of this genre, but still gave a listen. I much prefer reading the lyrics. Call me crazy. Call me old.
Cacophonous. Glad it was only 17 minutes.
Suspicious minds. A classic. Everything else felt over produced. I could hear Elvis’ age in his voice.
Too angry for my gentle soul. 😉 Obviously not my genre… so…
“Groove is in the heart” is the only one I was familiar with prior to this listening. Everything else…meh
So many good songs. Good memories. Quintessential late 60’s protest songs.
Not a fan. I’m sure that comment is sacrilegious.
Meh. Kinda boring
It just seems like this should be heard live in some honky tonk smoky bar.
Except for So Fresh, So Clean—I have to say this was a first (and last) listen for me. Not my genre.
Nope.
Loved this! Quintessential Marley. Made me want to see his documentary.
Amazing guitar rhythms. Interesting blend of African melodies mix with the Blues. First listen. Not bad.
My favorite genre! I could listen to Miles all the time. Love the soulfulness. Hadn’t heard either of these songs before. What a treat!
Interesting first listen. Not sure why it received such bad reviews and then years later it’s considered a gem of this genre.
So many awesome songs on this album. Great reminder of how music can capture a moment, an experience, a culture.
If Hip Hop had a musical comedy category, this album would be at the top of the list. Fun listen.
Loved this!! Hauntingly beautiful. Little echos of Coldplay.
I like electronic music so this was my jam, although a bit repetitive at times.
Ahhhhhhh music perfection! ❤️❤️
What????? Two albums in a row that are absolutely perfection??? I’m in heaven!
I get the concept. Same song, different flavors and venues…but…Nope.
Not fond of the vocals. Guitar and piano have no subtlety. Not for me.
Live albums are interesting in the fact that the audience becomes part of the musical experience. As a listener, I always feel kind of left out because I wasn’t actually present at the concert. This isn’t my genre so I’m fine with being outside the Thin Lizzy bubble.
I was a little young for Bob Dylan’s music but he definitely made a mark with his cultural observations about race, class and gender. I appreciate his song lyrics much more as I age.
Sleepy and repetitive.
Except for IGY and New Frontier, I was unfamiliar with the other songs on this album. Donald Fagen certainly has a particular style that is recognizable and perhaps a bit too repetitive. I’d give it another listen.
Loved the variations of my favs. A different sound each time. Thoroughly enjoyed. 😊
Ahhhhhh I loved this album back in the day. George Michael was everyone’s crush. Men. Women. Didn’t matter. His sound was soooo good. RIP.
Nothing Jewel-like about this tragic mess. 😑
Didn’t think I’d really listen to this album with any sense of enjoyment. I was surprised with the variety, the musicality and the poetry of his lyrics.
Who came first? Tracy Chapman or Joan Armatrading? Don’t care. Love them both. Loved this album!
I felt like I was on vacation on some island paradise, drinking a cocktail and listening to the local band. Good vibes.
Nope.
Love the instrumentation and then when the vocals come on…😑
Nope.
Definitely music from it’s time. It’s never been my preferred genre, but I’m grateful country has evolved over time. I can actually listen to it today without cringing. 😬
Well..it’s Taylor. What else can I say? 🫶🏽
Fun first listen. Too bad I don’t speak Portuguese, but it doesn’t matter. What a great voice!
Repetitive. Loud. No thank you.
Eminem. 😑 Not gonna lie, wasn’t looking forward to hearing this album. So angry. So poetic. So revolutionary. So not me, but I get why he’s on this list.
Lots of covers of my favorite songs. Great voice. Dare I say reminds me a bit of Adele?!?!? 🫣
Perfect for Karaoke. Otherwise nope.
Damaged and Life of Pain. Great titles for my experience listening to this album. Not my genre, for sure.
Quintessential James Brown. Live albums are always interesting. Trying to pick up on the energy present but sadly it just felt like I was too distant.
Thinking of my sweet son in law who idolized Bowie. ❤️
Love me some jazz! I imagine sitting in a corner booth of a darken jazz club in NYC with a glass of wine, closed eyes, allowing the tunes wash over me. 🎶🎶🎶
The “Doctor” performed an experiment that failed.
Quintessential blues. Love it! ❤️🎶
Nope. Not my genre
Freddie Mercury’s voice. Unmistakable. Didn’t know many of these songs but was an interesting first listen.
More Bowie. More fun! Once again, unfamiliar with many of these songs. I’m learning more about his layers. Interesting first listen.
Other than The Way You Move, I say, no my genre.
Meh. 😒
❤️❤️❤️
Interesting vibe. Good first listen.
Meh. Sleepy.
Why???
Ah high school memories. 😊
Nope.
Eclectic mixtures of sound and rhythms. Interesting first listen.
Loved this! What treat tripping down memory lane with BST! Spinning wheel, You Make Me So Very Happy. Love the vocals and the brass. Reinforces my love for jazz.
When I am grateful for pauses of silence, that tells me this isn’t my genre. It felt like Nine inch Nails on a Chalkboard 😫
Never been a fan of Honky Tonk. Gave this an honest try, but still not a fan.
