I liked the musicianship here, but I wasn't that much of a fan of the vocals. I really enjoyed The Bones of You, but it's a little slow for my taste. Some of the unique sound elements are nice, though, some harpsichord and other choices are nice. The later songs the singer is growing on me a bit giving me some Peter Gabriel vibes.
I am digging Joni's amazing lyrics, and the subdued guitar and riffs behind her are additive to the experience. Risk, love, travel. Definitely expressing lived experience. Peoples Parties doesn't exactly do it for me, there's something off about the cadence and sound, but the first 3 tracks are certified bangers. The Same Situation is so much more, the lyrics and rising sound feels right. Just like this train is pretty groovy but some nice vocal notes. The thematic little flourishes that are the same across sounds gives some continuity to this album. Raised on Robbery is a nice counter note of some upbeat sounds, and I'm enjoying what I think is a nose harp? Joni Mitchell's voice really carries parts of this album. Twisted got the vibe of a generation past, reminiscent of songs from the 40s? 50s? Kind of a fun song!
This is such a pretty album. It's built for summer. A smooth sound with good lyrics are always a nice touch. The little audio bits like bird calls and synth sounds really give it a warm vibe. This reminds me in someways to the Joni Mitchell album I just listened to. I wonder if 1001 albums has a bias to a certain type of sound? I guess I'll find out. Haha. Do you realize?? is such an epic track. This is a pretty album.
It's amazing the two most famous songs from this album are the last two. I felt like this album was too cool for me, and it was a little hard for me to get into, but it's definitely the case that Watchtower and Voodoo are bangers.
The Beastie Boys are timeless, and their sound as rap and comedy music is on point. I enjoyed this album but the Beastie Boys themselves aren't really my sound.
This album is epic. This sound is so unique and good, the production is incredible. This is art, comedy and fucking dark themes all wrapped up together. I love this thing.
This album has a lot going for it. At times sounds a little like Cold Play, but then has bangers like Knights of Cydonia. I love a lot of the big effort songs on here most of all. So many of these albums have their best songs near the back of the album.
This would get such a higher rating if Lars and James weren't such dillweeds. Also, a lot of the music is repetitive but there are definitely some epic songs on this album. So like it's good for its time, mid for now, and it was just a minute before some of the best music of my generation: alt and grunge.
This will be my first 5 star album. It's not even my favorite Beatles album, but it's so technically and melodically superior. Somehow, in half the length they're crushing out the best riffs and harmonies. Damn this album is fine. The lyrics are all awesome, too. Real life but poised and relaxed. Yeah. I can see why these guys created what we know as pop music today. <3
Very smooth, very nice. It was an enjoyable listen throughout. I wouldn't say it pushed too many boundaries, but I was happy listening to it. And that's important.
Very melodic, very uplifting, a bit dreamy and drifty. I liked it. I wish I could make more out of the lyrics, but it's still a jam. I like the strong power cords and ethereal voice work.
This was beautiful. I was going to say it gave shades of Outkast until I saw Big Boi collaborated on one of the songs, it was classic and retro but with modern vibes, beautiful songs, I loved it.
Honestly, this album does very little for me. I get at the time there was some mystique around this pair, their relationship, a duo making indie music. But I just don't get enough from it myself.
I am biased because I'm Irish, but I find this album very beautiful. It seems like every single song on this album has been featured somehow. There is a simplicity and beauty to the music. It's a lot coming out of Ireland at that time in history, too.
I enjoyed this album a lot, although at the time it was drifting weirdly in the middle, it's definitely a rocking album right before the NuMetal crazy. I'm a fan!
I love Bob Mould, this sound was the prototype for Sugar, which I think is his best work. I think the sound is so unique here but the lyrics are still raw. Hard call between 3 or 4 stars.
