Not for me. Smug French saxophone. Listenable though but not ideal
I'm tried to be impartial, but this is utter tripe
Very listenable. I do find his voice pretty grating though.
3. Good but far from their best work
I like Ray Charles but I really don't like this. Big band swing, not my cup of tea at all and I'm not convinced by his singing. So many songs almost identical, same chords, poor man's Georgia.
It's very clear where the Libertines got their sound from. It's good, but doesn't blow me away.
For some reason it didn't really do anything for me. Some of the sounds actually quite annoying.
A great album. I prefer the acoustic first half. Less bothered by the fuzz rock side, otherwise would be a 5.
Not for me ta, too much widdly Jazz. Perhaps good if off your head
It was very nearly a 4. But just a few too many songs that I didn't rate.
The same song over and over ag5
A good listen. Could be a 4 maybe from multiple listens but shall go with a 3 for now.
Yep, pretty good, nothing much to say
Delightfully atmospheric and tuneful. It didn't matter that I don't understand the lyrics. Perhaps I'll listen with the translations at some point but perhaps not! 4
Prog rock that I don't really get
Some astonishingly good songs. But can it really be a 5 when it includes I'm in Love With My Car and The Prophet's Song?
Nice enough and an easy listen. But this is supposed to be albums you have to listen to. You don't have to listen to this. Pretty average really. Even at it's release unremarkable so seems out of place in this list.
The harmonies can get a little grating, but there enough great songs on here to make it a 4.
It's satisfyingly bleak and dark. But also gets a bit samey. Not sure if I'd return to listen again, perhaps.
It's a pleasant chilled funky listen.
I remember quite liking this at the time, and I still quite like it.
This kind of 80s pop is very much not my cup of tea generally. This is alright, although I did find myself switching off listening and each song just blended into the next, the album just passed by. Ok, but not for me really.
I've never got Bruce Springsteen and I still don't. Parts of it made me think of Vic Reeves.
Jolly. But once you've heard one track, you've heard them all.
I have no idea what is going on here. StillI I don't dislike it, whatever it is, it's just not aimed at me.
No stop this please. This whole 1001 albums thing started so promisingly. Hopefully this stream of dirge is just temporary.
I'm sure it should deserve a higher score for its cultural significance. But I'm just rating it on a listen and I think its good.
Pleasant as background music.
Quite interesting album of short fairly unusual tracks. 28 songs in 41 mins makes a change from the last one that was 4 tracks in over an hour.
A man and his guitar. Glorious.
I didn't mind this, but I also forgot I was listening to it, so perhaps not the best review.
It's good and very enjoyable. I think it may be a 4 it the vocals weren't so shocking.
What a strange album. Quite enjoyed it though.
My favourite album of recent years. Faultless
It's very good and has some great songs. But based on Simon's overall set of work, a couple of songs just not quite up to scratch.
Pleasant background music that I will never listen to again
Self indulgent widdling taken to a new level. The musicianship is clearly outstanding but that certainly doesn't mean the music is good. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I was going to give a generous 2 until the last track, but it's such twaddle that much like the Spice Girls, 2 became 1.
Enjoyably dark. I do prefer a lot of their singles but there's still some great stuff on here.
It doesn't sound like it was recorded in the 80s, which can only be a good thing. Clearly a leap forward from their previous work. Excellent production and interesting music. Enjoyable.
I feel like I need to understand the cultural history of this album to appreciate it properly. I don't. I'd rather just be able to appreciate the music to be fair, which is ok.
This not my genre at all, but there are so many classic songs on here it has to score highly.
Its good fun and a pleasant listen. Not sure much more than that though. Lots of short upbeat tracks.
This would make good film soundtrack music. But to listen to alone I just can't get on with jazz. It's just too smug and pretentious for me. But at least it's not prog rock.
I like Nirvana a lot but am certainly not a fan. But this is clearly one of the all time great musical performances.
The album takes me back. Forgot it even existed and how good Oh My Sweet Carolina is.
I was surprised that this did very little for me. I found it quite boring.
Very enjoyable upbeat listen
I enjoyed all of this. Some of it quite a lot. Morrissey is a cunt though.
It doesn't do much for me, but also doesn't annoy me. Kind of generic and uninteresting faux-metal.
This is some of the better jazz I've listened to. I still can't get on with it but it's better than some of the more the pretentious smug stuff. And it's fairly short (I didn't listen to the double disc extended edition, over 2 hours!). Ok, which is a complement from me when it comes to jazz.
These songs seem to improve with age. I wasn't a fan back in the day but listening today they sound pretty much spot on. Only criticism is I find the songs a bit samey as it goes on and I prefer the acoustic versions mostly.
It's ok. I just don't really get it though. What is it?
It's very different, and for that reason I commend it.
As far as hip-hop goes, I find Public Enemy the most accessible for someone who is not into it in anyway whatsoever. Chuck D has a commanding and engaging voice. However even with all the positives, this is just not my kind of music at all. I can only rate on my own experience of the music.
It's enjoyable and pleasant to listen to. With the odd bit of darkness, though more would have been nice. Good but not great.
Potentially in my top 10 albums of all time. Maybe. Every song a belter.
One of the main reasons for following this list is to discover records I've never heard of or listened to before that I really like. And after 65 albums it's happened!
Fast and bulbous. That's right the mascara snake. Bulbous also tapered and a tin teardrop. No more needs to be said.
I think I like it, at least don't mind it. Though I'm not sure. I guess that means it's ok.
If this is the pinnacle of this particular genre, which I understand it is up there with it, then it doesn't say much for the genre as a whole. It's just a stream of childish cliches. At best a daft novelty record. Obviously it's not remotely aimed at me.
Every song is exceptional. An amazing talent that was sadly taken so young. Amazing voice and songs.
It's pleasant enough, whatever it is. Should it be on this list? Who knows.
Actually I just read on the wiki article that producer Suba died from smoke inhalation while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire. That is why it belongs on this list! Doesn't change the score though.
I listen to all these albums on half decent headphones. With some albums this enhances them a lot, with others it seems to show them up. Here the music just sounds at times tinny and empty. I can hear how this band will have been influential on a lot of the indie music that followed in the decades after but for me it is lacking something. It's like a band pretending to be the Pixies but not as good. Still not awful though.
There are some amazing songs and covers on here, but some are also pretty suspect. However it's still a great album and reinvention of the great man.
