Not at all what I expected from a James Brown album.
A good album but not one I'll listen to very often
Very bluesy album.
Great opener and closer songs. Those in between are less stellar although some are worth a listen.
It swings, it rocks and it rolls but it's a bit too dated for me.
Soft and minimalistic but not very remarkable. I forgot I was listening to something and started working without thinking about it.
Favorite songs: Intro & Crystalized
As often between R.E.M. and me it's a meeting that could have been but that wasn't. Although 9-9 almost deserve a star of its own.
Favorite songs: Pilgrimage ; Moral Kiosk ; 9-9
There is nothing especially interesting in the Foo Fighters but for some reasons this album works very well : it's raw, it's energetic, it's a blend of college & garage rock at its finest.
Favorite songs: This is a call ; Big Me
There isn't a song that shouldn't be there, which is very nice!
I mainly know Neneh Cherry from her collaboration with Massive Attack. It's a mix of hip-hop and pop but it sounds way too much like the 80's shitty pop sound for me to like it.
Favorite songs: Manchild ; So Here I come
I have an history with this album. At first I hated it with a passion and when I saw them live at Dour it confirmed what I thought : pretentious and getting on my nerves with this psyche rock and those synth waves.
Then some years later a guy told me that this album needs time to get appreciated and indeed it clicked. The choral singing got me and the repetitive synth lines became hypnotic rather than boring. I was hooked and it became an heavy rotation for some times at home.
Favorite songs: My Girls ; Also Frightened ; Summertime Clothes ; Bluish ; Taste ; Lion in a Coma ; Brother Sport
Some strong & memorable songs. I has this modern take on Rythm'n'Blues that make it quite good but it has also those songs where while I recognize the performance in production and singing it just does not make it for me (e.g. Turning Tables ; Don't you remember ; …).
Favorite Songs: Rolling in the Deep
A big band that plays some swing jazz. As I'm not fond of big band usualy I was a bit afraid of what was to come but in the end it's quite enjoyable.
Favorite Songs: After Supper ; Teddy the toad
While I know very well Scorpio Rising, I never took the time to listen to this album. It's a good old DJ / producer album in the trip hop genre like the 90s were able to produce. While it's a nice trip to memory lane, the album is not all that memorable.
Favorite Songs: Dirge ;
A rap classic with some bangers and simple but catchy samples.
Favorite Songs: Bring da Ruckus ; Wu-Tang: 7th Chamber ; C.R.E.A.M. ; Method Man
A quite generic rock album with some great tunes. I'll be happy when I stumble on it at random but I don't think I'll ever actively search for it.
Favorite Songs: Mr. Brightside ; Somebody told me
This album stand out not only because of the incredible flow of Eminem but also because it has this kind of groove that catch everyone's ear.
Favorite Songs: Stan ; The Way I Am ; The Real Slim Shady ; I'm Back
A pop rock album that has its appeal like the vocal harmonies, the overall very clear and crisp sound. It's without a doubt a hallmark of the 70's post hippie rock.
But the thing is that I doubt I'll listen it very often as I like it better when things are a bit rough on the edge.
Favorite Songs: Don't Stop ; Go your own way ; The Chain
A true metal classic. The songs are long and tell you a little story every time and yet never too boring (sometimes it's a bit too much yeah). It's also really energyzing.
Favorite Songs: Master of Puppets ; Welcome Home ; Leper Messiah ; Orion
A funky instrumental album. It's nice to listen to while working. And it has those happy vibes that light up your soul but I prefered the tracks with vocals.
Favorite Songs: Theme from Shaft ;
A strange blend of styles. I liked the jazzy outro of "On Sir Francis Drake".
A strange album where some songs are a blend of almost heavy rock and funk that groove and others are too long.
Over all I find this album has a strange sense of humor, at least I found it quite funny at times … I mean it starts with "Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time and you all knocked it up" after all.
Favorite Songs: Can you Get to That ; Hit it and Quit it
It's OK glam rock, sometimes catchy and some times spacey ballads. I wasn't impressed but it wasn't boring either.
Favorite Songs: Cosmic Dancer ; Get It On
A nice techno album from the early years.
Favorite Songs: Halcyon + On + On
It might be an historical record of a genre that I quite like but I found it boring nevertheless
Favorite Songs: Annalisa
A very bland pop-folk album with some touches of electronica, I didn't noticed it back then and it stayed unremarkable from my pov. In the end I really hoped the album was shorter.
Anyway I have the impression David Gray is the grand father of Ed Sheeran or the like.
Favorite Songs: Please forgive me (I was not yet irritated and it has some catchy tunes).
10/10 for the cover art, it has this minimalistic vibe that I quite like.
But the release in itself it's the beatles when they were still a boys band, my favorite songs were covers of earlier songs and it's telling. Hopefully they got better with the time.
Favorite Songs: All My Loving ; Please Mister Postman ; Money
A really great album, the first two songs directly catch your attention, the chord progression and the drumming on Into the Light is really really good.
A very nice discovery.
Favorite Songs: Spellbound ; Into the Light
Quite boring and sometimes ridiculous (I mean come on "Fall at Your Feet" really sucks and when the choir comes it's really over the top cringe).
It was so lame it successfully disctracted me from work in order to add this to the review.
Favorite Songs: Four Seasons in One Day
It sounds like a good uneventful album : nice voice, good music but nothing that makes me think "wow I needed to ear that before I die".
Favorite Songs: Next Girl
While I like the sound of portuguese in songs, I am not a fan of Bossa Nova.
Favorite Songs: Superbacana
Lots of covers, some great, some less so. Cash's voice is incredible as always.
Favorite songs: The Man Comes Around ; Hurt ; Personal Jesus
What I liked about this album is that even if it's a rap album it's by no way simple loops and samples. There's always something to find when listening to any song.
Favorite songs: Wesley's Theory ; King Kunta ; Hood Politics ; Complexion ; The Blacker the Berry ; Mortal Man
Never heard of The Shamen and understand why, it's by no way in my taste. The shitty electronic sound of the 80's is so prevalent that I would enjoy a trip at the dentist 10_000 times more than listening to this album. Hopefully the second part of the album redeems it a bit.
Favorite songs: Possible Worlds: Deep Psi
A blend of blues rock with harder titles, it's understandable why it's considered a landmark album of rock'n'roll.
Favorite songs: I don't mind ; My Generation ; The Ox
Vocally speaking Björk is doing more thant its part, the rest of the album is meh.
Favorite songs: Birthday
Apart from a best of that I listen to every once in a while, I don't know much about the Talking Heads and yes I should have paid more attention to them. The cohesion on the first songs is very strong with this funky vibe and it hooked me directly.
Favorite songs: Born under punches ; The Great Curve ; Once in a Lifetime ; Listening Wind
This album is so cool and smooth, it's like roaming slowly in a convertible without a care in the world. Perfect for a Monday.
Nice cover art for once.
Favorite Songs: After Hours ; Can I Kick It?
Some nice songs but I'm not incredibly impressed by the record.
Favorite Songs: Darling Nikki ; Purple Rain
It's energetic and cool with great bangers. A pretty solid record.
Favorite Songs: Longview ; Basket Case
It's a record that sounds like a 60's record but sung by the Arctic Monkeys. It's nice but there is no "waow" factor.
Favorite Songs: The Age of Understatement
This album was released a few days or weeks after Cobain's death and I've always found strange that the title of the album was so strangely foreshadowing of what was to come.
Any way, I have memories of listening to this album in a friend's room while discussing all the things teenagers talk about (girls mainly).
Nirvana's influence is all around this album but it stands on its own with great songs and Courtney Love screamings.
Favorite Songs: Violet ; Doll Parts ; Olympia
OK I listened to this, I already knew I didn't like the way he sings. I learned that 38 minutes can feel pretty long too.
Yet another album of the Stones revisiting blues. It's nice and cool but once again it's not exactly my kind of stuff.
Favorite Songs: Shake Your Hips ;
I guess the idea is to depict what long and inescapable suffering is. In this regard the album is a success: I was fed up after two songs.
All kiding aside, this is formulaic speed metal: one bangs heavily, another one makes a guitar solo, there are some screamings and lyrics about the devil and the suffering. Repeat.
Not my stuff at all.
It's a great mix of post-grunge pop rock sounds without any songs feeling weak. A very good record in my book.
Favorite Songs: You Oughta Know ; Hand in My Pocket ; You Learn ; Head Over Feet ; Ironic
A nice country album, one the series of "in prison" concerts he did. I always wonder how do those happen. I really liked that he genuinly seems to enjoy its time there.
Favorite songs: I walk to line ; San Quentin ; A boy named Sue ; Ring of Fire
Me not like that. I know that in all generality pop is not my cup of tea. This album just proves it again. It's not irritating yet but there's still 32 minutes to go.
A classical Dinosaur Jr. album mixing simple melody noise rock which is a prefiguration of what is to come. It's more approachable than Sonic Youth and yet sufficiently edgy / sloppy to trigger all the good signals in me.
And as all thing Dinosaur Jr, I really like the vocals of J. Masics it has this laid back / "idgf how I sing" vibe which makes every song a statement to coolness (I recommend the cover of "Show me the way" for an excellent example).
Favorite songs: Freak Scene
