1001 Albums Summary

Really enjoyed it. First time I'd heard this album, although I was familiar with most of the songs. Favourite tracks...Homeward Bound and Emily, for whenever I find her. Both beautiful songs. Favourite new song. Poem on the Underground wall.

This one I already own and listened to fairly recently..(UK version) I am a big fan of The Who. However this has always been my least favourite of the 8 albums made by the classic line-up. Like early Beatles, Stones and Kinks it sounds really dated and doesn't have any of the real quality they would show later. It also doesn't help that I have never been that fussed on the much lauded title track. Still not. Listening to it again, 'The Kids are alright' does the job of sticking it to the system anthem much better. So I listened to it fully expecting to give it 2 stars but it sneaked up to 3 (probably, really a 5/10). It's not dull... it's a fairly easy listen and the playing is great. The noise they are making... especially Keith and John...is very different to the sound of, say, Help, Kinda Kinks and Out of our Heads..all released in the same year. It's clear..even listening to this debut that Keith Moon is something very, very special. Favourite tracks. Kids are alright, It's not true, the good's gone.

Already owned and loved for many, many years. I am a big Nirvana fan, stretching back to the early 90s. This is just an incredible listen that has totally stood the rest of time. Stripped of the screaming and feedback, this highlights what a superb songwriter Kurt was. These songs completely hold up on their own. I would easily put it as my favourite of the three Nirvana live albums I own (Reading and Wishing being the others). The relaxed banter between the band is very enjoyable as well. You could quibble the fact that 6/14 tracks are covers but they are all enjoyable listens. Favourite tracks. Dumb and Where did you sleep last night

Owned this for years. Never been a favourite. It's not terrible by any means but it lacks the really great tracks that their debut has got. It passed fairly quickly and for the most part I wasn't bored but I wouldn't say that anybody who doesn't hear this before they die will have massively missed out on anything. I prefer Lou Reed/VU in their softer moments so those were my favourites. Favourite tracks.. Candy Says, Pale Blue Eyes, After Hours.

Never heard this one before. Really not my sort of thing but I gave it a go. Still not my sort of thing and I can't imagine I'm ever going to listen to it again. Rock Box was really good and I had the 'chorus' of 30 days going round my head for a bit afterwards but the rest kind of blurred into a collection of repetitive beats and uninspiring lyrics. Favourite (only) tracks. Rock Box and 30 Days.

Never heard before. Never will again! I tried! It's really not my sort of thing but people talk about this album in such exhaulated terms...I was expecting something magnificent that would override my indifference to hip-hop. And when I was done (and I did stick to the end)..'was that it??'. What have I missed? What was so revolutionary? It was just another hip-hop album, fine if you like that sort of thing but nothing special. I quite liked The Blacker The Berry. I thought about 2 stars as I don't want to trash something just because it's not my genre but the ridiculously ott reputation this album has, combined with an 80 minute runtime, meant that I wasn't feeling generous! Never heard before. Pleasant listen. I like his voice and the style was nice. Nothing massively stood out as extra special after 1 listen but this is one that I will definitely give a repeat listen to at some point. Favourite tracks. With tomorrow and For a Spanish Guitar.

Never heard before. Really not my thing but I tried. I can see why it would appeal. It was short, it was very, very funky. Every time a member of my family came in while I was listening to it they started dancing!

Never heard before. Not my thing. I tried and actually by the end I was kind of ok with it. It's not something I'm going to want to listen to again but I wasn't desperate for it to finish. I'm trying to avoid just trashing everything with 1 star if the issue is simply that it's not my genre! Favourite tracks. Drew Barrymore was fairly listenable to.

Have heard before but not for a very, very long time. Not really my sort of thing, however... So firstly, I'm reviewing the music not the man. Clearly MJ the human being gets 0 stars. I had this on cassette back in the 80s when I was a child who just listened to pop music on the radio before developing my own taste and style. Once I got into music properly in the early 90s this is something I never went back to and although many of the songs are familiar, this will be the first time I've listened to the whole album in at least 35 years. And, despite the name, it really isn't Bad! The majority of the songs are catchy and the whole thing flowed by. Smooth Criminal is a seriously good pop song and I've had it stuck in my head since my listen. The title track is great, I just can't stop loving you is great. I also enjoyed Man in the Mirror and Liberian Girl. Still not really my sort of thing but I will give it another listen at some point...sooner than 3& years time!! Favourite tracks. Own it but not heard it for a bit. 8 Miles High is an absolute classic. One of the best pop songs of the 60s. I come and stand at every door is interesting, if a little morbid. The Byrds take on Wild Mountain Thyme is excellent. Their take on Hey Joe is not. And the rest of the album is kind of just there.

I do own this one but I've never been that fussed and haven't heard it for ages! I quite enjoyed it..more than I remembered. Will probably give it another go at some point.

Owned this one for years and listened to it many, many times over! Beautiful album. Beautiful voice. Just lovely to listen to with a set of charming songs! Why not 5? I'm not really sure. In reality it's probably 9/10 but that's not an option. It's a collection of lovely 4 star songs but only The River really transcends into my personal list of classics. The River is just perfect. I'd never even heard of him until this popped up yesterday! I then read the reviews before listening... something I haven't done previously. I was expecting something awful so I was surprised, in that it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. After about 5-6 songs I think it was heading for 3 stars but it dipped in the second half.

Never heard before. Not really familiar with a lot of Dolly Parton's music, bar the obvious 2-3 that are inescapable! I am partial to a bit of country rock and I do own an album by Emylou Harris so this wasn't entirely out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed it. It was a very easy listen..the voices were superb! Definitely something I will give another listen to at some point! Favourite tracks. Hobo's Meditation and Telling me Lies

Owned this for years but not heard it for a long time. That was great! Totally forgotten what a great album that is. I remembered that Sexy Boy is a fantastic song but the rest was a very pleasant suprise. Not a weak song anywhere on the album and lots of highlights. A really nice sound, good instrumentals and lovely vocals. Favourite tracks. Sexy Boy and Kelly watches the Stars.

Owned and loved for many years. Wow. Just a phenomenal album. From the opening drum of Five Years to the closing of Rock N Roll Suicide, this was absolute perfection (almost...I've never been fussed with It Ain't Easy). So easy to see why it has such a high reputation. Bowie knew how to write a tune and the playing is top notch Five Years is maybe my favourite Bowie tracksuit on any album. The slow build up, the lyrics, the drama...just wonderful. Rock and roll suicide isn't far behind as is the title track. Starman may have been slightly dented due to over exposure but it remains a fantastic pop song with an insanely catchy chorus! One of the finest albums of the seventies! Favourite tracks. Five Years, Rock and Roll Suicide, Ziggy Stardust (everything is pretty much great though!!)

Owned and enjoyed for many years (first bought on cassette from a 2nd hand record sale in 94) Great album..not quite the all time classic of it's reputation and not my favourite AC/DC album (that would be Highway to Hell) ..but it's still wonderful. The playing is great... especially the rhythm section. Such a tight band. You know what you're getting with AcDc but they do it so well. The lyrics are often silly and (through 2026 ears) occasionally problematic but it's all just tongue in cheek. ACDC are at their best when they do gradual build up songs and there is no better example of this than Hells Bells which is such a great opener. The title track is superb as well Favourite tracks. Never heard before. It was ok. I don't mind a bit of country but it's only 3 days ago I was given Dolly Parton and I wasn't ready for some more!! The songs were pleasant enough although it was all a bit samey and nothing really stood out. I think Borrowed Angel was probably my favourite.

Never heard before... however some of the tracks were very familiar! Like a lot of people, I've got an old battered copy of Gold in my collection. And I always kind of assumed that would do as far as Abba were concerned....I think of them as a singles band. So this was the first time I have ever heard an actual ABBA studio album and it was...ok. The singles were obviously great... knowing me, knowing you is probably my favourite ABBA song (a-ha!!!) so that helped. And the deep cuts? Nothing awful and some of it was decent. Never heard the full album before but a lot of it was familiar. Nice listen...a great voice. Only quibble was that at least half of the songs I prefer somebody else's version. A Change Is Gonna Come is an absolutely incredible song, utterly timeless. But Sam Cooke's version is better! Likewise Wonderful World. Never heard before (a lot of the songs were familiar). Will be definitely hearing again! Wow! I've had American Music 2 for years and love it, but that might have been even better! An incredible set of songs that Cash completely makes his own. My new favourite version of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Hurt and Personal Jesus. Not a weak moment anywhere! Never heard before Not bad. I do like his voice and the album flowed nicely. No particular track jumped out as special but I was quite comfortable listening to it and I would happy give it another go.

Never heard in full, although some of the songs were very familiar. One of those albums where I would have liked to have given it 3 and a half (or 7/10). The best tracks are the most well known....Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger and Raw Power are absolute classics that have more than stood the test of time. And if that was the standard throughout we'd be going 4...maybe even 5...stars. But the rest of the tracks don't really have the same quality. Never heard before. 2 stars feels a bit mean..it was probably closer to 2 and a half! My second MJ album in a fortnight and I preferred Bad (I'm assuming Thriller will appear at some point). He's clearly very talented but nothing really made me want to listen to it again. Don't stop is the famous one of this album but it's not really my style. Favourite track. She's out of my life.

Never heard before. I've had a copy of World Without Tears for years and although I really like it I've never got round to hearing anything else she's done. So now I have. I liked it... probably not as much as WWT but that might just be because I'm not as familiar with the tracks. I'm definitely going to give it another listen at some point. 3 stars feels a bit mean... it's probably 3 and a half...but I suspect it's an album that needs a few listens to sink in and become a classic. Never heard before. Not normally my sort of thing but...... I'm going to put this one down as 'pleasant suprise'. I quite enjoyed it and may be tempted to give it another go. I liked her voice and the music had a nice sound to it. Lullaby was a really nice song...I really enjoyed Perfect Places as well. Writer in the Dark also stood out.

Owned for many years... really love! Great album! Dominated a bit by 'that' track, which I would happily never hear again....but there is so much more than that! Turn to Stone is a great opener, To the border, Stepping Out, Big Wheels... pretty much every track is a belter. Even Mr Blue Sky, I'm prepared to admit is not bad!!

Owned for a few years Probably a 3 and a half...just lacks that one killer track. The whole album is decent but doesn't really have a proper Iggy classic on there. Loose is great, the title track is great... it's like an entire collection of very good songs without any of them being excellent!! Favourite track. Loose

Really agonized over this score..more than any previous rating. Believe it or not, in nearly 50 years on this planet, this was the first time I had ever heard a Prince album all the way through. And...I am still not sure. It's not really my sort of thing but I could definitely tell the quality in there. The Cross was excellent, I really enjoyed Starfish and Coffee and Hot Thing as well. Realistically, with so much material and very much out of my listening comfort zone, it's probably 2 stars on first listen. But I suspect repeated listens would probably push it up..so that's what I'm going for!

Loved this album for many years. I almost didn't give this a 5. I felt time had dulled its impact a bit and it was heading for a 4. Then the ending of Rebellion (Lies) kicked in and I was transported back to 2005 when I played this album endlessly and I was reminded what a joyous and beautiful work of art it is! Neighbourhood 1, Wake Up and Crown of Love are the other highlights but the whole thing is just terrific. Such a shame that they've never really hit these heights again (in my opinion, obviously) As a little side note, this is now the third album I have been given in this project (after ACDC and The Who) by a band I have seen live!

My favourite ACDC album! I've always preferred this one to it's more high profile successor..partly because I've always preferred Bon to Brian. This whole album is just spot on. Title track is obviously a classic. Touch to Much is great, Shot down in Flames also. The final trio of If you want blood, Love Hungry Man and the utterly outstanding Night Prowler is the strongest finish to any ACDC album.

First time heard. Like a lot of people I've got a copy of Bob Marley's 'Legend' compilation album...I think it's great. Like..I suspect...most of those people I've never heard a Bob Marley studio album the whole way through, even Exodus. I had no idea this album even existed so it's proven a very pleasant suprise. Stir it up is on Legend so I am very familiar with it. A real classic and still sounds great. Stir it up was, unsurprisingly, my favourite on the album but there were other highlights as well. Concrete Jungle and Slave Driver was a great opening 1-2 and No more Trouble stood out as well. I will definitely give some more of Bob's studio albums a listen ( I'm assuming that Exodus is on this list somewhere)

Never heard in its entirety before. I am a big prog fan. There have been other albums in this project I have given 2 stars to purely for not really being my thing. This album doesn't get that excuse. This album sums up why you are always having to justify prog to people who don't get it... nothing more than 3 very talented musicians showing off. Pretty much devoid of all decent songs or memorable moments. Insanely forgettab

Just amazing. One of the greatest albums of all time.... certainly one of the most important! Utterly perfect from start to finish! Too many highlights to mention.. The Boy In The Bubble has always been my personal favourite but Graceland is wonderful, I Know what I Know, Diamonds..... The album ending...the climax of All around the world is utterly joyous! 5 stars isn't enough!!

Owned this for many years. So, cards on the table. I never liked Soundgarden quite as much as the other three members of grunge's big three. I never quite liked this album as much as Nevermind, Ten or Dirt. It was quite refreshing giving it a listen with this project in mind. My view had always been that it was a little too long and had too much filler. It still felt quite long but every track was pretty good and I can't remember what I ever considered filler. The three big singles are all still great, obviously, but so is the title track, 4th of July, Spoonman and many others. Really good album!

Owned for many years....not a massive fan. However... Back in the early 00s Mojo magazine published a '50 punk albums you must hear' article. Sounds familiar? As a young professional with spare cash and a decent record store in my city I went out and bought the lot. And discovered that I don't really like punk!! There were some surprising success. Dead Kennedys (are they on this list?) but most of it wasn't that great. Including this album. Three tracks in I hadn't changed my opinion. But then on came Damaged Goods and something changed. Firstly that song is awesome anyway and I'd forgotten that! But it sounds so like Fontaine's DC and I'm a big fan of them and suddenly I was hearing it through fresh ears and I enjoyed it a bit more. It went from 1 star to 2 stars and by the end I was enjoying it enough to give it 3! As well.as Damaged Goods, Return the gift and at home he's a tourist were also superb.

Never heard it before. Not bad. Not really heard a lot of Beck before. It was decent....I especially liked Golden Age and Sunday Sun. Will give another go at some point!

Really not my thing. Was ok for half an hour or so but I'd kind of had enough by around track 7. Sure it's brilliant but if that is the music you like but not for me.

Had this for many years. My Cd copy has a number of excellent bonus tracks (including the brilliant Autumn Almanac) but I only listened to the original tracks this time. Ray Davies is quite a songwriter. The best tracks on this album are another level. Waterloo Sunset may just be the most perfect pop song ever written...the equal of anything The Beatles did. Death of a Clown is also exceptional. David Watts, Love me Till The Sun Shines .....I also like Two Sisters. Didn't quite make 5 stars as it does occasionally meander into filler territory but still a great album. Favourite track (and one of the best tracks ever by anyone!!) Waterloo Sunset!

Heard it before many, many times! Van Morrison's run between 68 to 74 (Astral Weeks to Veedon Fleece) is up there with any artist. I have no idea how many of them are on this list but this is the first time that Van has appeared for me. Not my absolute favourite but it's still great. The title track obviously, and it stoned me is also wonderful. My personal favourite has always been Glad Tidings. Van has a habit of ending a lot of his albums on a real high and this one was no exception!

I really wanted to like this more. I'd recently watched a YouTube video on Herbie Hancock and this one featured heavily. So I tried...I think when it comes down to it, jazz isn't really for me. I respect all the talent involved I really do but it didn't grab me.

I own this but it's not something I reach for that often. I'm a big Blur fan so I got this when it came out but it isn't really my sort of thing. Clint Eastwood is a good song as is 19-2000 but a lot of the rest of it didn't really resonate.

I like a bit of alt-country/Americana. Pure country is a little trickier to get into! It wasn't a hard listen...over and done in half an hour...but I won't be hearing it again! Streets of Laredo is one that I had heard many times before, done by various different people, but I didn't know that was what it was called!

On a recomendation i bought fetch the boltcutters when it came out and absolutely loved it. Never actually got as far as exploring the rest of her stuff until.now. Three tracks in i thought i was heading for a masterpiece as good as bolt cutters but it didn't quite maintain the quality throughout. I will listen again though!

Actually preferred this to my previous hip hop selections (Kendrick and run dmc). Feel a bit mean giving it a 2…probably a 5/10 Lyrics weren't really my thing but i did like a lot of the backing. Favourite track was Gin and Juice

Never heard before. I have owned a copy of slanted and enchanted for years but never really got into it. This one i actually preferred. Whether i was just in the right place to hear it i don't know but it's definetly getting a repeated listen. The last song.....Filmore Jive. ..was especially good.

Arghh!! This one feels like a terrible score and i feel mean. Do i respect this album? Yes. Do i appreciate its quality? Totally. I can completly see that in terms of playing, composition, mood and influence this is a 5 star album! Did i personally enjoy it? Erm, not really. It was short but it really wasn't my sort of thing! Part 4 was quite nice.

Stunning. Not a massive rap fan in general but this is stunning! Dark lyrics on top of beautifully crafted backing tracks creates something dark and armospheric. Stan is a great highlight as is Marshall Mathers. Kim is one if the most unsettling listens i can ever remember. Grear stuff.

Owned this one for many years. Big prog fan but Yes have always been in my 'b list'. This is their best album however. 3 tracks..each one fantastic. I think i like them in descending order...title track first, you and i second and then Siberian Khtru third. Wonderful playing and songwriting.
