Devotional Songs by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Sep 17 2026

Didn’t one of these songs make it onto the Natural Born Killers OST? It’s not my usual style but I enjoyed this quite a bit more than some of the mellower contemporaries over the southern border. Good instrumentation, varied melody (except for the constant tabla, but it is mixed down enough not to be all consuming). Nusrat sings with real feeling and emotion. I loved this.

The Real Thing by Faith No More
Sep 18 2026

A classic of the genre. I never really listened to this much before, preferring the later Angel Dust. However this has some epic compositions on it. The keyboard is perfectly placed to give that sense of operatic drama that FNM are known for

Cloud Nine by The Temptations
Sep 19 2026

A great album of classic soul. It reflects the zeitgeist of the year it was recorded and you can see the influence of some of the psychedelic soul that was prevalent at the time, coming through. The long instrumental ending of Run Away Child, Running Wild is evidence of this. Then side 2 is good old soul again. A good effort and enjoyable.

Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons
Sep 20 2026

So sad that GP died so young and of something so avoidable. His voice was just sublime and the songs are so beautiful.

Sep 21 2026

Glad this came up today. Haven’t listened to this in ages. After Out of Time it seemed subdued and a bit of a letdown. I got into REM when Document was released and this was the first release after Document which did not get better than the previous release. Re-evaluating it all these years later it’s one of the classic run of REM albums that started with Document and ended with this one.

Sep 22 2026

Rap is not my favourite. So you know where this is going... That being said, this is quite inventive and interesting. On two one hour flights into Europe, album one for the first flight and album two for the second flight. I can safely say the 2 hours flew by (which is a lot for me to say about a RAP album!)

Sep 23 2026

A classic melodic exalt offering from Bob Mould. This was worthy of a re-discovery.

...Baby One More Time by Britney Spears
Sep 24 2026

Wow a blast from the past. Pop not talk my scene but listening to it now 27 years later memories come flooding back. This came out the year my daughter was born and so many of these tracks were MTV and VH1 staples at the time. I would not consider myself a fan of this 'bubblegum pop' but the sheer power of memory and the fact that placing this next to today's pop offerings makes this a retrospectively significant album.

Mermaid Avenue by Billy Bragg
Sep 25 2026

Very good. I feel like I should enjoy it more though.

Juju by Siouxsie And The Banshees
Sep 26 2026

A classic of the genre. Can't go wrong with a little Souixsie. This is a regular on my playlists regardless of its appearance on the 1001 Albums list. (5/5)

Live At The Regal by B.B. King
Sep 27 2026

I first heard this album when going through the book just after I bought it (in 2007). I liked this album then, but I love it now. Now I am closer to the subject matter; older wiser. I had forgotten how much chatter there is between the songs, but I do think it adds to the feel of the album. I wonder if the audience is real or canned? The band is on point, drums, piano, horn section and the bass is a constant groove. An excellent album!

Tres Hombres by ZZ Top
Sep 28 2026

I can't recall which mix this is - in fact I dont know, but I do recall this being a classic album. This is one of the most famous boogie-blues albums, and a very good one it is too! Listening to it again made me want to listen to The Rock Professor's (Chris Prior) again. A solid 4/5 from me.

Document by R.E.M.
Sep 29 2026

This is the album that got me into R.E.M. Some classic tunes on here and one of the first albums where Stipe's singing actually makes sense. Some really good tracks on here and even the 'filler' is better than most songs from other bands. This gets listened to at least once a year so this is not something I have rediscovered! A classic (5/5)

Sep 30 2026

I used to have this on CD back in the day. A nice blast from the past and a good album to listen to either on headphones or while working depending on how much head time you want to give it. Even listening to it in the background causes invasion into your mind. An excellent album (5/5)

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan
Oct 01 2026

So nice to have enjoyable albums coming through each day. This is another classic which is a brilliant bit of vocal jazz, the likes of which you don't hear of much anymore these days. Brilliant!

Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Oct 02 2026

Such a classic album. One of the earliest albums in the list before jazz went all atonal. This is a benchmark for melodic jazz music - just love it. I had the privelage of doing some studies under his son Darius in Durban in the 1990s... good times. The highest accolades!

My Generation by The Who
Oct 03 2026

Another classic album - they just keep coming this week! I have listened to the Who quite a lot over my life but revisiting this I can see how much this has influenced the music of the world subsequent to it. A brilliant album.
