Come On Over
Album Summary

This album has been submitted by a user and is not included in any edition of the book.

Come On Over is the third studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Shania Twain. Mercury Records in North America released it on November 4, 1997. Similar to her work on its predecessor, The Woman in Me (1995), Twain entirely collaborated with producer and then-husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange. With both having busy schedules, they often wrote apart and later intertwined their ideas. Twain wanted to improve her songwriting skills and write a conversational album reflecting her personality and beliefs. The resulting songs explore themes of romance and female empowerment, addressed with humour. Produced by Lange, Come On Over is a country pop album with pop and rock influences. The songs contain country instrumentation such as acoustic guitars, fiddles, and pedal steel, in addition to rock riffs and electric guitars. She released an international version on February 16, 1998, with a pop-oriented production that toned down the country instrumentation. Then Twain embarked on the Come On Over Tour, which ran from May 1998 to December 1999. The album spawned 12 singles, including three U.S. Billboard Hot 100 top-ten hits: "You're Still the One", "From This Moment On" and "That Don't Impress Me Much."

This was the first CD I consciously remember listening to, and I spun that thing until the edges were worn down. Twain masterfully fused country song structures with just enough pop sensibility to create an album that’s catchier than any pop country release since, and has aged gracefully while being way ahead of its time. Solid songwriting, great lyricism and instrumentals, Twain’s stellar vox, AND the feminist anthem of our generation as the opening track? This LP is stacked dangerously high with talent and delivers on every level.

One of the biggest selling albums of all time, and a really interesting pick. A bit odd that this wasn't in the main list, given it's success, influence and arguably it's representation of the peak of the CD era. Being in the UK, I'd never heard this 1997 North American edition before. It's so country! The 1998 International edition has a purely pop sound with the country elements almost completely stripped away. A 1999 International edition reissue goes even further down the commercial road, featuring radio and dance mixes of some tracks. You can't accuse Shania of not knowing her markets, and if world domination was the objective of the increasingly poppy packages, 40 million record sales say it was mission successful. Being used to the International mixes, it's at first a little weird to hear massive pop radio hits as wry country songs. This is most striking on 'That Don't Impress Me Much'. After a few listens to this original version it feels more authentic, appealing and makes the UK Dance mix (that was all over the radio in 1999) feel very cheesy. It's really interesting to hear the original artistic intent of something that anyone born in the 80s will be so familiar with, but in a different form. The theme of female empowerment also feels more potent and striking given the subject matter that country songs often cover. Really surprised this one was not on the original list. When this came out it was the biggest thing on the planet. She was sexy and talented and the songs were fun and exciting. The album still holds up and is a blast to listen to again after all these years. 5/5

When people talk about the 90s and how great it was referencing peace time, low prices, and of course Shania Twain. This is just a female country album. This is the female country album. Some songs are classics and still get played all over. This album really transcends the country genre and is just like able. 8.3/10

It's alright. I don't mind the more pop-oriented tunes. When it veers more country-ish I'm not a fan. 3 stars.

I'm struck by the sheer number of singles that came off this album. This album was a massive hit in its day and a really catchy, well-crafted collection of songs. Definitely an oversight leaving it off the original list. I was never particularly into Shania in her heyday, but it's hard not to respect her talent. She has a killer pop sensibility and a natural charisma as a performer that is incredibly engaging. The songs are assertive but big-hearted and highly listenable, with little in the way of filler. Fave Songs: You're Still the One; Man! I Feel Like a Woman!; Whatever You Do! Don't!; When; That Don't Impress Me Much; I Won't Leave You Lonely; You've Got a Way

Not too bad considering. There were a few songs from this on the radio back in the day. Pretty harmless, would never listen again but hey it's a 3/5.
