Really surprised this one was not on the original list. When this came out it was the biggest thing on the planet. She was sexy and talented and the songs were fun and exciting. The album still holds up and is a blast to listen to again after all these years.

Drunkenly going nuts to man I feel like a woman on my 21st birthday is a core memory for me so I can’t really give this any less than a 5. The rest of the songs are good too.

This was the first CD I consciously remember listening to, and I spun that thing until the edges were worn down. Twain masterfully fused country song structures with just enough pop sensibility to create an album that’s catchier than any pop country release since, and has aged gracefully while being way ahead of its time. Solid songwriting, great lyricism and instrumentals, Twain’s stellar vox, AND the feminist anthem of our generation as the opening track? This LP is stacked dangerously high with talent and delivers on every level.

If you are under 35 then you will really struggle to understand the ABSOLUTE GRIP that this album had on the entire United States from like 1997-1999.
Every single one of these songs was just in constant rotation on the radio. You could not go out in public without hearing it.
So I may be a bit biased. I think they're all pretty much certified bangers, but it's just fully ingrained into my psyche at this point. It's as American to me (for better or worse) as, like, the national anthem.

When this came out it pissed me off to a level that until then music had not yet pissed me off before. Not sure why exactly, it just pissed me off. Still does.

This album is amazing gold. Though it definitely has a bit of a dated sound, it really is amazing that her and Mutt wrote, performed and produced the whole thing. It is just one pop country candy treat after another. She does a great job of delivering a fun approachable sass and style that elevates it from a lot of the female artist standards of the time. I wasn't thinking this was going to hold up after all this time, but was solidly impressed, across 16 tracks even. Amazing!

There is no good reason for Shania not getting some attention on the list! Not only creator of this - one of my favorite country rock albums - Shania became one of my favorite performers after I watched her Canadian Football League Grey Cup performance in 2017 where she arrived resplendent in red fur and glitter on a husky-drawn sled to flawlessly perform a few of her greatest hits in the middle of a snowstorm. Even the drums are covered in a dusting of snow. Look it up if you haven't seen it... and GO CANADA!
This album is perfect country/rock that makes me want to get some boots and take a line dancing class. I've loved it since the first time I heard it in 1997 and I think I love it even more today. Taylor and a lot of other huge stars stand on the shoulders of this musical giant!
Come On Over is packed with so many great songs and brought me so much joy today! THANK YOU SHANIA, and the person who added this making me aware of yet another musical high crime of omission committed by the original list's creators.

Wow, thank you to the person who put this on the list! I never would have picked it myself, but Shania is HUGE and she really did Canada proud with all her pop superstardom success in the 90's. She put on her leopard print pants and shook her ass for the good of her country, and for that I salute her!
Seriously though, this album is a juggernaut of pop country hits. It may be so slickly overproduced but it's good. It's campy and kitschy and silly and stupid. It's everything you want in a guilty pleasure listen. Shania shook her ass so Taylor could shake it off. That's the gospel. Maybe that's why Taylor don't impress me much, because Shania did it first and did it better. Plus, YAYYY CANADA!!!

When people talk about the 90s and how great it was referencing peace time, low prices, and of course Shania Twain. This is just a female country album. This is the female country album. Some songs are classics and still get played all over. This album really transcends the country genre and is just like able. 8.3/10

One of the biggest selling albums of all time, and a really interesting pick. A bit odd that this wasn't in the main list, given it's success, influence and arguably it's representation of the peak of the CD era.
Being in the UK, I'd never heard this 1997 North American edition before. It's so country! The 1998 International edition has a purely pop sound with the country elements almost completely stripped away. A 1999 International edition reissue goes even further down the commercial road, featuring radio and dance mixes of some tracks. You can't accuse Shania of not knowing her markets, and if world domination was the objective of the increasingly poppy packages, 40 million record sales say it was mission successful.
Being used to the International mixes, it's at first a little weird to hear massive pop radio hits as wry country songs. This is most striking on 'That Don't Impress Me Much'. After a few listens to this original version it feels more authentic, appealing and makes the UK Dance mix (that was all over the radio in 1999) feel very cheesy.
It's really interesting to hear the original artistic intent of something that anyone born in the 80s will be so familiar with, but in a different form. The theme of female empowerment also feels more potent and striking given the subject matter that country songs often cover.

It's a good poppy country album. Easy to listen to, albeit very formulaic, but I guess that's why there's a formula for this kind of stuff. Would listen to it again.

Another one I’m quite surprised wasn’t on the original list mainly due to the sheer size of it. According to Wikipedia it’s the 8th highest selling album of all time (putting it ahead of Rumours, Saturday Night Fever, ABBA GOLD, and any one album by The Beatles) and a whopping 12 of its 16 tracks were released as singles
It’s probably the peak of pop country, and while there are some elements I’m not a fan of at all - a lot of the production choices are very lifeless or just generic, so many songs have great chorus/boring verse syndrome, and the duet From This Moment On sounds like the big ballad from a forgotten post-Menken Disney film - but Twain has enough presence and charm to pull it off. And when the songs hit, they sure do hit. I think every Shania Twain song I know is on this album, including songs I forgot I knew like Love Gets Me Every Time and When. Some of the songs I didn’t know are a lot of fun, filled with needless stand-up key changes that are all pulled off annoyingly well. It all just sounds so professional and expensive and meticulous, and has enough heart that the downsides that kind of sound can bring are easily overlooked. There are a few weaker songs towards the end, especially the very cringe Rock This Country, but thankfully it pulls things back for the tender closer You’ve Got a Way

I suppose as a Canadian I should love Shania Twain and I think she is fine. The songs on here are well known and bangers but in the end, it's not really for me. It's got a specific sound that is just so 90s. That's not a bad thing, but it's not ultimately something I connect to.
Now saying that, the fact it isn't included in the original list is another baffling ommission. This album has had a huge impact on country music and its sound since its release.
My personal rating: 3.5/5
My rating relative to the list: 4/5
Should this have been included on the original list?
Strong yes.

I'm struck by the sheer number of singles that came off this album. This album was a massive hit in its day and a really catchy, well-crafted collection of songs. Definitely an oversight leaving it off the original list.
I was never particularly into Shania in her heyday, but it's hard not to respect her talent. She has a killer pop sensibility and a natural charisma as a performer that is incredibly engaging. The songs are assertive but big-hearted and highly listenable, with little in the way of filler.
Fave Songs: You're Still the One; Man! I Feel Like a Woman!; Whatever You Do! Don't!; When; That Don't Impress Me Much; I Won't Leave You Lonely; You've Got a Way

I can't judge this fairly due to my despising country music. If you look at some of the one liners? Amazing? But then you add the country requirements of twang and whatnot and I can't. 3 stars for the one liners.

HL: "Man! I Feel Like a Woman", title track, "From This Moment On", "That Don't Impress Me Much"
I feel like I'm not as enthusiastic for this one for reasons beside the music. There's a reason many of these songs still endure after almost thirty years (at least in Canada), but much of the time that I'm listening to this I imagine a darkened community centre, floor sticky from all the spilled booze, where everyone does the boot scoot n' boogie because that's the only socially acceptable dance.
Shania opens this album with an all-time banger though, so can't complain about that

Shania Twain has a few stellar achievements with this album: best-selling studio album of all time by a solo female artist, best-selling country in the United States, album of the year grammy nomination, and significant influence on other country stars like Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, and uh...who am I forgetting....oh right, Taylor Swift.
To say that this album has an important place in music history would be an understatement, so why is it so often overlooked by music enthusiasts? Well for one thing, it's a country pop album which is basically considered a death sentence. That's not to say country pop is a genre devoid of artistic merit (I love Patsy Cline and the Dixie Chicks), but in the minds of many "enlightened listeners" this is a combination of two genres that are just generally uninteresting. I will not be so dismissive, but that's my theory as to why this didn't make the list.
Come On Over is Shania Twain at her most confident, fun, humorous, and straightforward. Giving Gen X women songs like If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!, That Don't Impress Me Much, and Honey, I'm Home brings a sense of female empowerment with Twain playing around with gender roles. This is especially evident in the killer opening track Man! I Feel Like a Woman! which has every concert-goer with a bedazzled cowboy hat go crazy for the line "Let's go, girls." Are the songs any good? Yeah, most of them are, but they're also not innovating on anything that much. It's a fairly safe country pop album that had enough hits to cement Twain's legacy as THE woman in country. 12 singles over three years, to be exact.
CONTENDER FOR THE LIST: Sure, why not.

28 years ago, when the singles from this were being released, I absolutely hated all of them. Just that visceral reaction of "Oh for fucks sake" when you heard that "bap bap badow ba bap bap" in a nightclub and you knew it was time to go to the bar to get another pint of three point something percent lager and wait for that intermimable tripe to stop.
Nearly thirty years later, I can't think of many things from the late 90s that I miss less than Shania Twain.
It was everywhere, which didn't help, but then so was cigarette smoke and that literally gives you cancer.
