He has such a calming smooth voice, it's very relaxing. I wish there were more stand out songs on this album than just the title track though. That voice could have done so much more.
This is a strange beast. Obviously it was innovative upon its release, and even today it still sounds like a science experiment. It is quite monotonous though. I was expecting to enjoy this much more than I did. I'm glad I've listened, it feels like something that should be heard, like a lesson in the evolution of music, but isn't really something I'd choose to hear again.
The problem I always have with Santana is that the instrumentals always sound like they were designed to have a lyric, it's just been removed, or the track has remained unfinished. The vocal tracks are awesome though, and obviously the guitar is stunning throughout. This is a really good album to stick on while you're doing other things.
Who doesn't love Otis? Whoever it is, they're wrong, and I wouldn't mind slapping them about the head. This album is just lovely, you can't argue with that voice, it's everything a soul voice should be. Otis sets the tone for millions of others to follow. A lovely listen.
This is offensively bland, I can feel my personality trickling out of my ears. Terrible, how did this even get on the list, is it a joke? Is it just here to make everything else sound better? This man never deserved the Taylor name. Appalling.
I thought I liked Billie Holiday more than this. It's okay, and it does feel like I'm listening to something important, something that should be heard. Her voice is really strange though. I think the problem mmight be the songs on this album, they're all very light and I like her when she's all intense and emotional.
This is awesome! In no way does this sound like 1983, it's more like early 90s grungey sounding, which is totally my thing. I love this. I didn't even know Gone Daddy Gone was a Violent Femmes cover, I should have known this stuff. I'm not sure how this band got past me, not anymore, this is a most pleasant surprise.
It's Zeppelin, you know exactly what you're going to get. I did like this more than I usually like them though. I think doing a whole album here works better than the solitary songs I've heard before.
I really want to kate Kanye, I always have, and yet hes so fucking good at this stuff. I can hate him and love what he makes, right? This is almost perfect hip hop, as are all his albums, annoyingly. Just lovely stuff, beautifully produced, interesting, varied, entertaining, innovative, fun, it has it all. I'll just pretend it's not Kanye.
There's something comforting about Billy Joel. He's always been around, these songs are deeply embedded in the psyche as though they'd always been there. It's like a sign of maturity when you realise he's great, it happens in everyone's life eventually. Great songs, great music.
I've never been a lover of freestyle jazz type stuff. I like rhythm and order. This is not for me.
Costello's voice has always annoyed me, and the songs on this album are all so bland. It's completely unoffensive and mostly biege. Tedious.
I don't like the voice. Voices are so important to me and can quite easily become annoying when they use weird inflections and contrived strangeness. At some stages on this album I can't even recognise the language being used. The music is kind of okay.
Well this is just awesome. There's not a bad track on here. I like to think I would have been all over this had I been a teen in 1969, but the truth is teen me had nasty taste. 1969 must have been really shocked by this album, it still sounds relevant today. Lovely stuff.
This is much better now than it was in 1995 when every DJ was obsessed with how cool Leftfield were. It's pretty pleasant background music, I quite enjoyed it going on around me but never really got involved.
Generally, I do not like country at all. Im not saying I like this, but I did make it all the way through the album for one reason alone - some of these lyrics are hysterical! I didn't love the music, or the voice, or anything really. But the lyrics contain little gems of comedy that made me laugh enough that I could endure the rest.
The Smiths are so frustrating! Had the rest of the band not met Morrissey, and had stumbled into a different singer, they could have been a great band. Some would say they are great already, they are wrong. Musically it's all quite nice, the odd song here and there is even almost bearable, but he really has to go. Another voice here would be glorious. Horrible little man.
What a little gem this is. This mini-album is all new to me, had never heard of it, and I don't really know what's going on with the story. It's very relaxing, I'll be revisiting it for sleep assistance.
This isn't for me. It's harmless enough, though ridiculously repetitive, but that borders on the annoying. I would never choose to listen to this, but I wouldn't complain too much if it were on in the background in a shop or elevator.
Nope. I never got the whole Bowie thing. I find most of his stuff dreary and droning. I quite literally fell asleep trying to listen to this. There are some interesting song ideas here, I guess, but then Bowie drones all over them. I still don't get the Bowie thing.
It's all so disjointed it makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't listen to music for that. I get what they're trying to do here, I know they're doing it on purpose, it's the point of the thing to take you out of your comfort zone, it just really doesn't work for me at all. Some of the sounds could be quite pleasant if it weren't for all that dissonance.
Quite a decent listen, it had my toes tapping. There are some interesting tunes and melodies throughout. I enjoyed it, though I likely won't ever revisit, it didn't stand out from the hip hop crowd at all really.
Tedious, even by old crooner standards. It's harmless, but it does nothing I don't expect, even on songs I haven't heard before. I know exactly what the melody will do, what word rhymes will be used, where the tune will go. I assume this wasn't the case upon its release, but it is now. This is a great listen, very nostalgic, fantastic production values, lots of familiar songs that are well known for good reason. I liked it.
This is clearly the forerunner of everything I loved about 90s grunge, and I should love it. 'Where Is My Mind' does a lot of the heavy lifting of the score here though. I do like it, I think perhaps I'm biased against it as it has been held up as a shining beacon of innovation that can do no wrong. That one song though might be worth a whole 5 on its own. So good.
Late breaking news: Talking Heads are awesome! I've always been aware of them, and some songs that were great, but had no idea what was lurking on their albums was better than any of the singles released. All interesting tracks, none sound remotely like they're over 40. I'm very late to this party, but I'm really enjoying Talking Heads.
As disco as it gets. Lovely smooth production on all the tracks here, deep basslines throughout, super catchy melodies. It does exactly what you expect Chic to do. It's a nice comfortable listen.
I can't. I just can't with that voice. All that uppy downy on every syllable thing he does makes me want to hurt not just him but anyone I can get hold of. It's an instant rage maker. I get that he's very popular, but no, you can't make me listen to this, no amount of persuasion will work. Ick, I heard half a song, I want to scrub myself clean.
This sounds like it's the best album from a decade that doesn't exist. It's a weird amalgam of 60s, 80s and punk. If you described this to me in any way, it would be all the things I hate about music. And I fucking love it! This should have been much more of a thing, it should have been emulated, started a trend. How did it not?
This should be better. It starts well but quickly fades into background music because it's so samey throughout. I kept forgetting I was listening to it. It's obviously very influential, you can play 'spot the sample' throughout the thing. Disappointing though, I thought it would be more and it so veryn early was.

Strange album, strange band. Most of this feels like it should be an intro to a song that never comes. It quietly does its thing without really disturbing anyone, until it starts screaming. I really don't like that, it's very jarring.
Why is this on the list? Why did this even get recorded? If this man hadn't been a Beatle I wager that neither would have happened. It's sentimental trash with very few redeeming qualities at all. I'm worried peeople will see on me that I listened to it, I need to scrub it off.

A friend once called Elliott Smith a 'talent vacuum'. I think he was being too kind. There is definitely a black hole of anything good around the man. One of the first albums of this quest was his, and I've dreaded another coming up since. It's fucking awful, it gives me a physical reaction because it's so awful. Pile o' shite!
This is really rather good. It's an instant good mood being piped directly into my ears. I have no idea of anything they're singing about, but whatever it is it's being done really well. The music is lovely throughout. An enjoyable listen from start to finish.
Joy Division are really good, who knew?! The rhythm section is so enjoyable to listen to, the drummer never misses a beat, it's wonderful. I think i will be returning to this album, there's so much to like about it. I never really got the Joy Division thing before, mainly because I hadn't explored them. Now I have reason to try.
Boring country type stuff, it's not for me.
You can't not like Aerosmith. This is rather good, doesn't sound at all aged. These guys are fun, always, and this album is fun.
I'm quite annoyed it's taken this endeavour for me to realise how much I like Iggy Pop/Stooges. This stuff fucking kicks ass. I've wasted so many years, this music could have been with me my whole life. It's raw, punky, simple, energetic, and it rocks.
It's Lennon. I already loved all the songs I knew, but there were a few I was unfamiliar with, and even those are lovely. Aside from loving this throughout, I have to go top marks in case one day Mum finds out I didn't, she'd hurt me, I'm sure of it.
This is all quite pleasant, unexpectedly so. It was a nice accompaniment to my pottering around. Nothing wonderful, nothing terrible, straight down the middle niceness.
Everyone knows all the Blondie staples, most of us don't realise they all lived on one album. This might be one of the best albums ever created. I forget how great this stuff is, it's not until you sit and pay attention that you realise how awesome it is. Not a bad track in the bunch.
At first I hated it for the voices. Then I quite liked it for some of the music. Eventually I became completely indifferent to it.
Quite mediocre throughout, nothing stands out, nothing is innovative or interesting. We've all heard this kind of thing a million times, and it doesn't get any better here. It's not even interesting enough to dislike with any conviction.

I was enjoying the instrumental tracks, they're quite pleasant so took the edge off the Weller vocal tracks. However, in a completely unexpected swerve, rap happened. From Weller. The second hand embarrassment is too much. What the fuck was he thinking. It's so cringey, it hurts.
One of my favourite albums from one of my favourite people on the planet that I am more than a little obsessed with. I am totally biased. This album is beautiful, full of wonder, peaceful and just lovely. This album and I are friends.
Most of this sounds like all the club trash from the mid-90s, but then it was released in 1990. I'm afraid being an innovator doesn't help when that trash got played to death for years. Groove Is In The Heart is always fun to hear though, and there are some cool samples throughout.
The Chain. That is the only song worth hearing on this album. I never really got the Fleetwood Mac thing. The only reason I like that song is because it was the theme tune to F1 racing for years. The rest is all too mellow and nice, it has no passion in it.
I really like Blur, they get even better with each album. Nothing sounds quite like Blur, they're very recognisable and interesting, even the songs I don't love are interesting to hear. The sound of Albarn's voice transports me straight back to the 90s, even on their newer stuff, Blur are the 90s in my head. A fun listen.
I had no idea ZZ Top were so religious. How did they go from Jesus band to party band so fast? The music here is almost perfect rock, it's like the template for rocking. I'm not so keen on the voices though. This is my failing rather than theirs, I'm fussy aout voices. Regardless, this is a fun listen.
Released three weeks after I was, this album is feeling its age as much as I am these days. It sounds dated, it is very seventies with no mistaking. I've always been a fan, my older sister's fault. An entire album of this might be going too far though, I could have done with a couple of tracks less. Still, a good listen.
I had heard one song from this, and always liked it. Turns out the rest of the album is even better. I love this! It's an easy listen, fun, melodic, and rocks out. I wasn't expecting this to be so good. A very nice surprise.
Nothing here was designed for me, and that's okay, not everything has to be aimed at me. I don't like the music, I understand very few of the lyrics. It's a lazy, lay around in the sun type of record. Nothing here is bad, it just isn't made for me.
I had the album before this one, and loved it. By the time this one came around I was a little bit over the band. There are a couple of excellent tracks here, namely It's A Sin and Heart, but also a lot of filler. No matter the quality though, it's a surefire nostalgia machine transporting me straight back to 87.
Oh that voice, it melts my soul. These songs live in the ether, in some kind of collective memory that we all know. So familiar the sound has become a cliche, but nobody does it quite like Muddy Waters.. It's all just beautiful, and sounds like it just happened organically, like he picked up a guitar and this album just happened. It's a wonderful force of nature we all have in us.
This is awful. I want to give it less than 1. It has a lot in common with things I adore, however, there's enough wrong to make it terrible. The 'singing' is the worst thing of all, it's barely even a voice, just some whiney sound in the background. The production is all off, the music is a mess. The worst I've had to listen to in this project so far.
It's okay, it's no Thriller though, obviously. There isn't much else to say about this, it's a Jackson album. I always considered it one of the weaker ones, but lots of people seem to like it.
I can usually be objective and I understand that just because I don't like a thing that someone somewhere might love it. Perhaps it's just not for me. This album, however, made me angry. It's so bad. So so bad. I can't even figure out what they're trying to do here. There's no cohesion, no atmosphere, no point. Awful stuff.
One' could score top marks on its own really. It is by far the stand out track on this album, the rest trailing behind in its wake. I wonder if it makes the rest of the album sound bad because that track is so superb. I only scored this 3, because I know Metallica do so much better. But still, what a track One is, faultless.
These guys were so hyped in the mid-90s I got sick of them before I ever listened. This is actually a decent album, I'm surprised how many songs I know already, that hype must've worked. There are two types of song here, the surefire hits and the fillers. The hits are a fun listen, half of this album would have been better than all of it.
A decent listen, Lots of the bands I used to listen to would name these guys as among their influences, but I have never got around to checking them out. I quite like, it didn't sound as dated as I expected, and the songs are really catchy. It does all get a bit samey quite quickly though.
England was slow to catch on to the REM thing, and I feel I sort of missed the boat because of that. If they had caught me late 80s/ early 90s, at my most impressionable I think I'd be a total fanatic. They are really good. I know most of the songs here, but had no idea these were from 87. I feel my youth was robbed of REM. Love it.
The final track is worth the top mark on its own, it's stunning. This album reignited my appreciation for Nirvana when it waned a little following my Nevermind obsession period. The Unplugged sessions were such a great idea and produced some amazing musical moments. This is always a great listen, it can't really be faulted.

I love this. I always loved this. It's one of the world's great 'get up and go' albums for when some musical motivation is needed. Full volume in the club I worked at turned this album into a monster. So many tracks here made the crowd go nuts, we had to ration Prodigy for when we had enough doormen to handle it. Such power, I fucking love it.
You can't really argue with what Madonna does, love it or hate it, she's very good at her pop thing. This album is full of classic pop tracks, easy to sing along with, easy to dance to, easy to relate to. I'm not a big pop fan these days but I enjoy most things she put out through the 80s. It's so streamlined and polished. Good stuff.
There's not really anything here to like or dislike, I found the whole thing entirely unremarkable. It's there, it's doing its thing, it isn't interesting me at all. I had to keep reminding myself to listen.
It's The Temptations, doing what The Temptations do best, Temptationing all over the place. Always a nice listen.
A nice surprise. I generally find Springsteen really cringeworthy and just too American. This is a nice album though, understated, thoughtful, calming, nothing I would generally associate with him. It made for a pleasant evening.
I'm not listening to this trash. I tried, for a minute or two, but I haven't done anything wrong to deserve such punishment. This album was released around the time I was getting into harder music, exploring metal and hard rock. It made me question everything, maybe I should just stick to the crap pop stuff. I'm sure it's only on this list as a reminder that other music can be really good.
'Last Night' is a great little song. It does however appear to be the only song The Strokes have. Everything else sounds exactly like it, like they wrote one good thing and decided to stick with the template as much as they could. They is no variety on this album at all, it's a real disappointment.
I wanted to like this more, I thought I would. It gets a bit samey over the whole album, though there are a couple of good tracks. I like Depeche Mode, I'm glad they exist, getting through a whole album like this is a little like hard work though. They're so very mood-altering, draping everything in a dystopian melancholia that isn't that welcome right now.

The longer it went on, the more bland it sounded. And then, without me really even noticing, Paradise plays and suddenly I'm almost crying! Maybe it's hormonal, or just perfect timing. How dare he cause emotions, I'm so mad!
This is new to me. I fucking love it! On rare occassions a dance album just grabs me and I fall head over heels in love, this is one of those times. It sounds so BIG. I've listened in the middle of the night, on low volume. I cannot wait to put it on the big music system and go loud. There are a billion samples recognisable throughout, it's funky as hell, and impossible to not dance like a nut to. Love it.
It's difficult to comment on something that sent me to sleep on the first track. This album is very relaxing, even when you don't really want to relax. Forced relaxation is quite annoying.
Really tedious, and just to make it totally unbearable, you can hear the scouse accent all over it. Nastiness.
I've loved these guys since the 80s, and yet I constantly forget what a great listen most of their albums are, so keep being surprised by how much they rock. Few bands can make me smile as much as the Beastie Boys do. They're familiar, we grew up at the same time, they're practically family. This album was a great start to the day today.
A surprisingly relaxing album, it's perfect to have on while working, it doesn't distract from the task at hand but decorates the space around you with sound instead. It's a nice place to spend some time.
I like a lot of CCR stuff, none of it seemed to be on this album. This seemed just too much CCR, it was overrun with high levels of CCR-ness. Someone turned up the CCR to 11. It's an overbaked cake, a hat on a hat, CCR squared. Even the voice was too much for me. Too CCR, too American, too much.
This rocks! I honestly don't know how the whole Joplin thing passed me by, I've never really heard much of her music. One tiny complaint, this album does go on a bit too long. I could have happily lost a couple of tracks, but yes, that Joplin chick is pretty great! It was fun to spot that Eminem sample in there too, like a little cameo spot.
