You can tell that he had a lot to get off his chest after leaving the Beatles.
Felt like they were throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. Some songs sound like the Beach Boys, some like the Doors.
Album full of great soul!
Most of the record holds its own with Walk on the Wild Side. Very solid album front to back. Lots of interesting music variation. Very Bowie-esque in many ways.
Lots of similarity to Stevie Wonder and other 70s R&B with some interesting jazz tunes
Catchy psychedelic modern art rock
More gritty and stripped down album of underdogs. I actually kinda liked most of the songs.
Somewhere between Silversun Pickups, Modest Mouse, and Cake
So many banger classics. The mix of rage and catchy pop rock is so good.
I actually liked it! The accent that annoys me on Wonderwall added a lot to this album. Very solid rock album.
Such a great album. Every song is great and is written like poetry.
One of the best prog albums ever. My favorite is Heart of the Sunrise.
So many great ones on here. Surprising use of alternating time signatures and polyrhythm on several songs.
Pop with super dense and complex layering. His vocals are like Broadway meets Thom Yorke.
I thought the rest of the album was meh next to Song 2. I'll give them that it's diverse, but I was zoned out for a lot of this.
Love this album. There are some super fun songs, mixed with more mellow and reflective tracks.
Interesting and unique intersection of rap with British/Indian culture and female voice.
I thought this would be mostly Americana songs in the vein of Love the One You're With, but it was very eclectic. Some blues, soul, and funk mixed in. And I enjoyed reading about and listening for the other notable musicians who contributed, like Ringo and Hendrix.
Interesting mix with the orchestra. After a while the same backing phrasing got repetitive and could have been more interesting. Metallica was metallica. Another commenter thought it sounded like Metallica doing a James Bond score: totally agree with that! I had the same thought.
Cmon, this is an easy 5. Every song is strong in its own way and I think having the diversity of three different composers is a major strength.
Sometimes interesting, but this just isn't my aesthetic.
I definitely hear the co.parisons to the Stones, but I enjoyed the more raw edge and rockabilly nature of this. I was tapping my toe to pretty much every track. Sounds like a bunch of guys just playing music they love in a fun way.
Excellent album front to back! Songs were strong on their own, but the arrangements and orchestration brought it up even more!
Loved listening to this for the first time. Yeeeaahhhh Boyyyy! I didn't realize Flav had so much rapping to himself, I thought he was a hype man before listening to this. Samples were great and funky. Some of the lyrics are just lyrics for lyrics sake and don't hold much, but some are really excellent.
Incredibly unique. I'll probably need another listen while reading along with the lyrics to fully appreciate it. Orchestral folk, but I like the terms "prog folk" and "freak folk" to describe it. Not my cup o' tea musically, but maybe I'll give it another shot.
Never listened to this album fully, but I've heard all but a few of the songs anyway. This makes me wish ai was a little older and could have been a part of the scene at the time instead of learning about it 10 years later.
I got part of the way through Gang Bang and started skipping ahead. Grooves were ok, but it wasn't worth it. Was this on the list because of its shock value?
Tour de force from Janis and the band. So many classic from this one. I didn't realize they were all from a single album. I think I got contact high just from listening.
Morr vibe than music. Sounds just like every 90s video game and dance party.
I'm surprised that the singles come near the end. S&F were never favorites of mine, but Mrs. Robinson was always a classic to me.
Interesting mix of traditional folk and rock folk bordering on Dylan and Janis Joplin rock.
Damn, I never listened to Hole, but of course knew of Courtney. This hits up there with some of the top grunge albums!
Not my normal cup of tea, but this was delightful.
Load of great tunes, amazing for a debut album. You can tell they had all this in their repertoire for years before recording. Too bad about the racism.
I always have a soft spot for good disco.
Bleeding me away that this was all improvised.
I really liked this. Beatles-esque 60's pop done by jazz artists with lots of jazzy arrangements, medlies, and interludes.
Some cool concepts, but the final 2 or 3 tracks could have been half as long and been better. Other sound scape songs are constantly changing, but these were just repetitive.
Just great grooves front to back
I didn't even finish this one
