Can't Buy A Thrill
Steely DanWhat a great listen. Strong start and continues through most of the album. Consider me a Steely Fan.

This album shreds but is far from perfect. Jack White has some hits that never left but half of the songs are forgettable.
I wish there was at least one upbeat song. Just depressing.

Starts funky and then shreds your face off in the end.
I was excited to hear and Elvis Costello album because I couldn’t name any of his music off the top of my head. Now I know why. This was probably good radio fodder in the late 70s but nothing timeless. The album is consistent but not memorable.
Not a fan. Maybe you had to be there to appreciate this album, but I will probably never listen to this again.
Decent grunge sound but nothing about the album was memorable.
So many hits but it’s a long album with a few tough listens as well. Prob could have cut a few from the 1 hr 13 min experience.
The best rock band from your high school.
It’s never a good sign when you check how long an album will be during the first song. The jazz was enjoyable, I just couldn’t get into his voice and found it grating.
A consistently good album. Near 5 stars.
I liked it a lot more than I thought considering I had never heard of Mercury Rev.
Another album I had heard probably nothing from before but I enjoyed listening to this.
I like R&B but this album was just ok.
This album is legendary. I just wish I was sitting on the beach and not at my desk.
Eh should stay in the 80s.
What did I just listen to.
David Bowie slowly growing on me but not enough.
I’ve had a rough few picks in a row. This might be a sympathy 3.
This album is better than its cover art would make you think. 90s Rock.
This isn’t something I could listen to all the time and maybe it’s an insult to the artist but this is the type of music I love to sit down and focus working too. Easy listening.
Pretty generic 80s music
Sounds like a one time opener for Michael Bolton.
You go to a dive bar that happens to have a band playing. After a few drinks you pick up their CD for sale next to the stage to take a look. You put it back down realizing you’ll never listen to it. That is Meat Puppets II.
When you put your best song first on the album because you’re worried it will get buried in the rest of your average songs.
I saw the date of the album and was worried I would hate it but it was actually pretty decent. Not shocking they still have a following 40 years later.
It was ok, not really my style.
This was a solid 2 star album until track 8, when I questioned if my Spotify was broken.
This is one of those albums that makes the list seem a lot harder. 2 hours of music, many songs which have been listened to less than 10,000 times on Spotify. And this is top 1000 album all time, why?
I consider myself a Steely Dan guy but this isn’t their best album, high 3 but not a 4.
This was ok. Didn’t sound like standard music from 2002.
The first track reminded me of being in a Chicago jazz club which was wonderful. Didn’t enjoy the others as much.
I didn’t listen closely to the words but pretty easy listening. Would be a 4 if this was more my style of music.
I can’t fathom this as an album in 1979. Ahead of its time? First song is obviously the best but a fun album overall.
I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but it’s a lot of the same song on a very long album.
I can’t fathom this as an album in 1979. Ahead of its time? First song is obviously the best but a fun album overall.
I thought I would enjoy this less. Songs are too long and a bit grinding to get through at times.
I enjoyed the first funky half way more than the punk second half. Pretty weird, second half brings it to a 2.
I doubt this will be the best temptations album on this list. It was good but not great like I expected.
The album has so many iconic songs it’s just not something I could pickup and listen to anytime.
It was pleasant but that was about it
This album shreds.
I wanted to love this album as I know my father does but I honestly found it kind of sleepy.
Classic 90s
Meh, mostly harmless just nothing special.
Not a huge fan of a Tribe Called Quest, but I did enjoy this. Good surprising listen.
Pretty easy listen for a classic metal album.
So prior to hearing this album, I thought Fiona Apple was an actress from the 90s. Apparently I was wrong. The album was solid but didn’t blow me away to the point that I’m not convinced Fiona Apple wasn’t also a middle tier actress.
Not a prince guy. I don’t get it.
Not a big Sinatra fan, seems most albums have one song. But this was better than the first album I got from him by a lot.
I didn’t know she sang son of a preacher man. Ok listen, definitely a 1969 time capsule sound.
Sometimes this list feels like 1001 albums I had to listen to in 1980 so I think you should too. More of a 2 than a 3.
It felt like they were trying too hard to be cool almost the entire time. This is a 3.55 being rounded up to 4.
Fantastic album.
Well produced album but largely forgettable.
If this album was a desert it would be a small single scoop of vanilla ice cream with no toppings. Not the fancy vanilla either, store brand.
I like the sound of his music but I never really enjoyed his voice. I understand why he’s popular just not really it for me.
I’m growing to appreciate the Beatles. Easy listen. Giving a 3 although it falls somewhere between 3-4 for me.
Nostalgia album as this was incredibly popular while I was in high school. A lot of classics.
Second Fiona Apple album. I don’t know, forgettable? Not really my sound.
I really didn’t like it at first but it grew on me. I think I get it.
This was very 90s but in a good not great way.
I had never heard of the Yardbirds, but read about their history. What an awesome incubator of talent. Album was an easy listen although a bit long.
I like the White Stripes but this album wasn’t my favorite of theirs.
I didn’t mind it at first but at a certain point it felt like one song that never changed. Not really my style. Very 80s.
Add me to the list of people who had heard of the Lips but never heard a song before. I really enjoyed it. A few songs weren’t really it for me, but after track 1, I was excited to see what I was in for.
Such an intense album. I really like the sound Chuck D brings but Flava Flav is trapped in my head as the reality show version of himself. Not really my style but I can see how others would celebrate it.
A ton of classics but the album eventually melds into one sound and doesn’t have a clear book end to finish it if that makes sense.
My goal is to listen to every album on this list cover to cover and this was the biggest test so far. I hate this album and have negative feelings for whoever said it’s a must listen. -5 stars
This album followed the worst I’ve ever listened to. It may have been a 2, but it was such a pleasant change, here is your 3x
The band name had me hopeful this was an old country album. It was not and I’d say it’s as below average as its cover art.
I enjoy this laid back/indie sound. Very easy listen with a lot of different sounding track.
I just don’t get the Prince and Bowie hype. I’m so glad I didn’t have to pretend to like it when it was at its peak.
It sounded like an album that could play through in the background of the bar at a hip pool in Miami or Cabo.
Just some easy listening Jazz.
Never been a big U2 fan and when I saw this album came out in 1983 I was worried. But it rocks. Really enjoyable album.
Not bad enough to be a 2 but generic enough to be a 3.
So intense. I don’t think I could listen to it everyday but a metal classic.
I’m not really sure what type of mood you’d have to be in to be craving this album but I didn’t really enjoy it.
Funky but fun. Not sure I could listen to it everyday but it feels like the type of variety you’d expect on a list like this.
I’d heard of Emmylou but had no idea what her songs were. None rang a bell. It was a pretty low key album but nothing really memorable.
Had heard a few of the hits over time but never listened to the album. Fun big sound with some sax sprinkled in.
I really like the instrumentals and solos, I’m not sure I dig his singing delivery.
Not a lot of thoughts. I hoped it would be a good listen and it was.
I enjoy folk so this was an easy listen. Classic 3-4 range for me but generic enough to be 3.
Haven’t listened to this list in a while and this was a fun one to come back to.
First 3 songs are pretty timeless. The rest blurs.
Pretty easy listen. Short only 30 mins. Not really something I’d listen to again but pleasant enough.
High 3s almost a 4, really enjoyable listen. Great voice.
90s nostalgia, a lot of average songs on it. But 3 for the memories.
If you take yourself back in time, I can imagine putting this record on and letting it spin and finding enjoyment.
Funk!
I don’t know if it’s because I’m in a good mood but I liked it more than I thought I would.
Why did you do this John?
The first album I ever heard from Black Sabbath was Paranoid, which is hard to match.
A ton of hits buried in between insane intermission and dialogues
