Hard to see the guy with tits in Fight Club 50 years earlier belting this out, but there it is. It’s like Jack Black if he got a record contract before comedy started. I feel like I’m listening to Rocky Horror Picture Show long cut. It’s good and maybe even great, but not for me.
Imminently listenable. At home in a "trainspotting" sequel. The vocals harken to early Joan Jett + Miley Cyrus, and mesh beautifully with the synth and driving beats. Later tracks were less dance, more "dance in the rain". Dig it. Will listen to it again for sure, and with 1001 albums looming that says something.
So interesting to hear these white dudes who were so heavily influenced by the old black R&B greats. You have affected voices, harmonicas, clapping and signing as in a Southern Baptist Revival church. Fascinating. Behind it all you have great arrangements, some classic tracks (title, The Kids are Alright, I can't Explain) and when placed in it's time, some really groovy tunes man! I can see hearing this why they were right there with the Stones at the time, but to me, this doesn't stack up comparatively. My rating will be based on their contemporaries similar outputs. I would give some of those Stones albums 5s, so this will have to be lower. Not even sure it's a 4 honestly.
Absolutely fantastic. Felt like I was in the islands. Will play
ahead of it's time is an over-used cliche, but having been alive and listening to music in 1991, I can tell you this sound wasn't in the mainstream (i.e. college). It's a good album, but my ratings are too high in general. Since it's not my taste, I'm going to give it a 2, but only because it's not my taste. If you are a hip hop fan, you are likely to give this a higher number considering the frame of it all.
I think I know why this never hit it huge. Credit to the writers of Spinal Tap if they were channeling this - got a serious "listen, to what the flower people say" vibe. I will likely never listen again, but get how the Doors were influenced. Just not my jam.
like many others have said, I think you had to be there.
Paint it Black out of the gates shows the level these guys were at compared to their peers. Then they show the year on track 2 with Stupid Girl. Still a little edgy, but never bound to be a hit. The other hit (Under My Thumb) is an obvious banger, but the rest of the album will be the rating. Pretty much classic Stones. Pithy lyrics, great harmonica, simply chords, etc. Like it, but not up there with my fav Stones albums, like Out of Our Heads.
My guess is these dudes hung out with Morrison, Bowie...Lou Reed? First listen, and I dig it. Sort of like spoken word.
great start. roundabout is just a great rock tune, but hooking you with beautiful fingering and then a killer bassline.
just a waste of time. not a fan. like many others say...it's just bland rock and roll. If I saw them on a Wednesday at a biker bar, it would be about the level of music I would expect.
One of my faves growing up, and it doesn't disappoint after all these years. just a great album start to finish.
This is flat out one of the best so far. The hooks we know - We Are Family is something everyone who has attended a wedding in the past 30 years is familiar with - but the lesser known tracks are orchestral, great lyrics, beautiful voices. I WAS born in Detroit early 70s, so maybe these jams just speak to my soul, but a firm YES.
Relaxing background music. Like if my dentist gave my a glass of white with my cleaning. Which would taste bad.
love these guys, but this wouldn't be the album I choose from them (maybe another one in there, but doubt it).
FUNKY. This must be on here do to it's weight on the 70s funk scene. It's wild, and simply great.
Original as it gets. For my money he created the rockabilly sound that permeated through Orbison, Son Volt, Wilco...you name it. Influenced so many that came after him. Stevie Ray Vaughn, for example. Since it was new, it's deserving of a pretty high score.
good easy listening. honestly sort of forgettable and probably won't listen to it again.
meh
First album bought!! BANGER start to finish. I love it as much today as the day I bought it. RIP eddie.
really great intro song. sets the stage. Ive heard some tunes by them before, but not an album, and wasn't on the radar. Can see why after five tracks this is on the list. Start to finish not a weak one in the bunch. This is setting up to be my first "never heard of these guys but know a few tracks when I hear them" five stars. Kept it up throughout. This one is a keeper.
This is perfect working music. Dig it when I actively listen, doesn't intrude on progress when I am just "hearing it". Probably fantastic for a night with friends enjoying wine...all sorts of uses. I DIG IT MAN!!!!
Haven't heard this one in a long time. Almost campy, early Batman tv show - but the power of Morrison's barritone and the unique fusion of keys and guitar make this a quintessential late 60s album.
dug this one. some killers, some radiohead influences.
Some classics, the rest of the tracks are good, but not fantastic musically. Punk scene of the late 70s early 80s on display, but not my fave. Would be a worthy addition to a playlist of the genre but don't see myself seeking it out.
Her voice is great, the music is good. Not my cup of tea.
New genre. Return to ACTUAL rock and roll. Simply fantastic after all these years. Glad Grohl held the torch.
This must be before Rod became the sappy non-rocker. gotta give it up to early Rod. Good stuff
Could be a backdrop to a bad episode of Miami Vice. Flight of the Conchords does this style better - funnier, and not trying to be serious. Sorry guys if reading this, but this aged poorly.
