Popular Reviews

Reggatta De Blanc by The Police

Ending the 70s in style and setting the tone for the early 80s. If you were in the uk you could not avoid the singles! Funky post-punk pop.

Black Metal by Venom

Nope. Didn’t get it the first time round. Still nothing 30+ years later.

Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Dec 28 2025

First time listener to fleet foxes. I think they could only have come from the USA with this sound. Layered guitars and layers vocals. When the keyboards came in, I was reminded of the keyboards in Peanuts/Charlie Brown. I mean this all in a positive way! I think the lyrics may be less uplifting than I’m feeling from the music on first listen.

Moon Safari by Air
Dec 29 2025

Ok…in my wheelhouse…not a diner party went by late 90s without this super cool vibing duo. I do wonder if Tony Banks got some royalties for “la femme d’argent”…which could have been lifted off his keyboard on Genesis’s “The Lamb…” 😂

Debut by Björk
Dec 30 2025

Actually bought “Human Behaviour” single when it came out (& I prefer the single remix to the album version). I do find a whole album of Bjork a hard listen.

Reggatta De Blanc by The Police
Dec 31 2025

Ending the 70s in style and setting the tone for the early 80s. If you were in the uk you could not avoid the singles! Funky post-punk pop.

The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground
Jan 01 2026

If Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones had a vocal love child. Proof that people on drugs and not just boring to talk to but also to listen to… “Let’s hold the one note for 5 mins straight” I know I am supposed to think this is one of the greatest most important pieces of work ever. I just don’t get it. 🤷‍♂️

At San Quentin by Johnny Cash
Jan 02 2026

Ignoring the 1 octave vocal range, this is a great live album. Humour and some great uptempo music.

Tommy by The Who
Jan 03 2026

Worth listening to once all the way through…but you know the good stuff off this already. Pinball Wizard, and We're Not Gonna Take It being the standout tracks

Another Green World by Brian Eno
Jan 04 2026

The lineup tells you it’s going to be technically great - Eno, Fripp, Collins…and the stand out for me, Percy Jones on bass. Eno is never a straight forward listen but this is on the easier end of his work for me. Still wouldn’t play it out of these listening sessions though. Pleased that artists like him exist…like high end fashion, he goes first so that others may follow.

New Wave by The Auteurs
Jan 05 2026

Perfectly pleasant but offering nothing new (even for 1993). Felt I'd heard it all before and I find the vocal quite weak.

Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout
Jan 07 2026

This is good, “From Langley Park to Memphis” is great 😀

Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Touré
Jan 08 2026

Skilful guitarists just not something I would listen to

Here's Little Richard by Little Richard
Jan 09 2026

Brilliant. Game changing in its day too. Love it. Rock. And. Roll.

Horses by Patti Smith
Jan 10 2026

Eclectic, sometimes frenzied, sometimes meek. If Jagger, Dylan, and Siouxsie Sioux had a daughter… …but it seems I need more “toons” (melody), and less a fan of solo vocal artists with the voice as the central instrument.

Pearl by Janis Joplin
Jan 12 2026

Never listened to Janis before…but I love Ian Gillan and she reminded me of him! Sensational range, emotion, energy. Love this.

Jan 13 2026

Killer Queen was the only track I knew. Caro has Bowie, I have Queen. On paper they should be one of my favourite bands, but outside of the singles I just don’t get them. Outstanding musicians? Yes. Freddie one of the greatest showmen? Yes. I just don’t love the album tracks :-(

Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Jan 14 2026

Pretentious drivel.

Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake
Jan 15 2026

Very cool. Reminded me of John Martyn.

Moving Pictures by Rush
Jan 16 2026

Their best album? To a lot of Rush fans - yes. Mixing guitar and keyboard and moving into the 80s with a different sound I LOVE this. We should be able to give 10 ⭐️ not just 5. I don’t know how to review this album it’s so good.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Jan 17 2026

Great debut album. Can’t believe I have never listened to it before! Much more reminiscent of Cream than Led Zeppelin for me.

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Jan 18 2026

Open track I quite like…a bit like The Damned 15 years previous…each track thereafter is a bit 1-dimensional. Adding the choir defo help to elevate some tracks. Can’t warm to his speak/singing. Probably a lot better live.

Music Has The Right To Children by Boards of Canada
Jan 19 2026

Love this. Ambient grooves. Very cool. Reminiscent of Porcupine Tree’s Voyage 34. And fae Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿…what’s not to love 😀

Jan 20 2026

“Vivid sound” claims the cover…but this recording is anything but! “Muddy, scratchy, thin sound” would be more honest. I’m sure I’ve heard/seen much better James Brown live performances than this. 😢 That aside…it’s James Brown! The godfather!

Haunted Dancehall by The Sabres Of Paradise
Jan 21 2026

Yikes. A struggle to listen to. At least there were some beats… Any of the tracks over 90s were too long by however many seconds over 90s they were.

Jan 22 2026

I’m inclined to concur with Dion himself and distance myself from this durge.

Black Metal by Venom
Jan 23 2026

Nope. Didn’t get it the first time round. Still nothing 30+ years later.

Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys
Jan 24 2026

Boldly going where they had gone with their first album, but without the hits. If you like the BB you’ll like this too.

Ten by Pearl Jam
May 22 2026

I only knew Alive from this and have not knowingly heard anything else by Pearl Jam…but now I’m intrigued! Great and different sounding vocals, lots of layered guitar. High energy. Kinda reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd! Will be listening again and the rest of the back catalogue.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme by Simon & Garfunkel
May 23 2026

Forced to sing this at primary school. Hate it with every atom in my body. How do I give negative ⭐️?

Miriam Makeba by Miriam Makeba
May 24 2026

What. A. Voice. Never heard her off of her before…Will look out some other tracks now. Only 2 misses for me: house of the rising sun, One more dance

May 25 2026

Love the energy, can relate to the vision of life in the UK - does this travel? Some clever observations for anyone who’s ever been 18-21 and clubbing. Thought it was overhyped when it came out but in retrospect it’s a bit of a banger. If you don’t like his vocal style you’re out of luck as it doesn’t vary at all. FYI: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor cover by the Sugababes is even better than the original 😃

At Newport 1960 by Muddy Waters
May 26 2026

Love this… I do prefer any of the Motörhead live versions of Hoochie Coochie Man 😁

Hard Again by Muddy Waters
May 27 2026

Muddy boldy going where he went every album

Elephant by The White Stripes
May 28 2026

This should be right in my wheel house…but… …beyond 7NA I just can’t warm to this album at all 😕

Boy In Da Corner by Dizzee Rascal
May 29 2026

Interesting new genre to me at the time…my sons were right into it but they were 12/15 or so. Unlikely to listen to it ever again.... not heavy on melody

Arrival by ABBA
May 30 2026

Classic. Every song a pop banger.

The Genius Of Ray Charles by Ray Charles
Jun 02 2026

Tam White & the Dexters introduced my to Ray Charles in the dark sweaty Preservation Hall, Edinburgh. Good times indeed but sadly the rolling did stop in the end. Tam’s version is on 😢 Anyway…back to Ray Charles. I prefer the first half by a country mile. His voice and piano are great.

Teenager Of The Year by Frank Black
Jun 07 2026

Excellent energy. Never even heard if them before. Thinking the Cramps meets Ramones at the start. Will be back for more.

Deep Purple In Rock by Deep Purple
Jun 13 2026

Every song a banger. One of the first albums I ever bought, and I still put it on 40+ years later. The keyboards, drums, base and guitar all top in their field. Then you add Ian Gillan’s vocal. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ this album.

Rust In Peace by Megadeth
Jun 22 2026

I like rock. I like metal. I don’t particularly get thrash. No doubting the skill or musicianship but the weakness for me is the vocal and lyrical content. Which is a problem given it’s his band! Some nice hooks, Poison…, Lucretia esp. But it took me two or three listens to get to them. First listen I found quite repetitive with little melody. Everything my parents claimed of the rock I liked as a teen 😂 Second listen - much more rewarding. Going to give it 3 stars though esp for the solid drums and bass, and some great guitar kicks from Friedman.

Boston by Boston
Jun 23 2026

What can you say? Just give it 5 ⭐️ and move on!

Master Of Puppets by Metallica
Jun 28 2026

Interesting that this was only a few days after a Megadeth album… trying to start a ruck? 😂 Still don’t get thrash/death/doom/etc but the singing and lyrics were better on this than the Megadeth album. It’s ok. About as excited as I can get for it 🤷‍♂️

Jun 29 2026

Ah late 90s pop/club scene… This bothered the charts a lot and still holds up well. Catchy hooks everywhere you turn.

Different Class by Pulp
Jun 30 2026

Possibly the most cleverly written album of all the Brit-pop era. Some sharp accurate observations on real life lyrically. Some excellent mostly upbeat music. Especially love the keyboards. I hadn’t listen in years but will now dive back into their back catalogue.

What's Going On by Marvin Gaye
Jul 01 2026

Genius stuff. Political pop. Always in the top 10 albums with good reason. This is soooo listenable and cool.

Cafe Bleu by The Style Council
Jul 02 2026

Cool jazz is not what I expected next from The Jam’s Paul Weller. Liked it much more than I expected but unlikely to return to it.

Jul 03 2026

Tight as a snare drum - Kilmister/Clarke/Taylor era at its live peak. If you’re not a fan already this isn’t likely to change your mind, but it gives a great impression of the intensity their gigs had. If you are a fan then this is a must must-listen.

Can't Buy A Thrill by Steely Dan
Jul 04 2026

5 stars and it’s not even their best album. Cool, sophisticated, catchy, intelligent. What a debut.

Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
Jul 05 2026

You only get two options with Iceland music. Catchy genius or weird shit. This falls into the second category. Eclectic soundscapes. I didn’t hate it but not an easy listen.

461 Ocean Boulevard by Eric Clapton
Jul 06 2026

Scandalous thoughts… this is kinda —1 dimensional and a tad boring.

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Jul 07 2026

Effortlessly cool.

Third by Portishead
Jul 08 2026

Their first two albums were hardly happy go lucky pop but this takes it into a much grungy, industrial, super-bleak place! Yikes

Pump by Aerosmith
Jul 09 2026

Not even trying to hide the problematic behaviour this band are known for, Aerosmith open this with “Young Lust”. Left it there.

Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons
Jul 10 2026

Never heard of Gram before. Sounds a lot like the Country (& Western) I heard growing up in the 70s in rural East Scotland, but with more serious/contemporary lyrics.

Hunky Dory by David Bowie
Jul 11 2026

Bowie pretends to be a Beatle in much of this but no bad thing. Rick Wakeman’s piano emphasising this. The weakest tracks sit in the middle, Kooks and Quicksand not hitting as high for me. Changes is the standout track by a country mile.

All Hope Is Gone by Slipknot
Jul 12 2026

First time Slipknot listener. Probably last as well. Love metal, hate dirty vocals etc so Psychosocial and Dead Memories are among the few that interests me.

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
Jul 13 2026

Proper song writing and some great acoustic guitar. Paul Simon stepping out on his own and joining the cool early-’70s singer-songwriter crowd.

Duck Rock by Malcolm McLaren
Jul 15 2026

Pretentious noise nonsense.

Kollaps by Einstürzende Neubauten
Jul 16 2026

Why must I hear this before I die? Would happy wait until after…

In Our Heads by Hot Chip
Jul 17 2026

Clever, soulful and quietly adventurous

Smash by The Offspring
Jul 18 2026

Raw, energetic American pop punk/grunge/metal. Surprised by how much i enjoyed it.

Fuzzy Logic by Super Furry Animals
Jul 20 2026

Really enjoyed this. Beatles inspired Welsh pop!

The White Album by Beatles
Jul 21 2026

Mostly brilliant…with occasional fillers (looking at you Bungalow Bill)

Orbital 2 by Orbital
Jul 23 2026

Trippy dance isn’t usually my thing but this was ok. Not going to sit down and listen to it but having it on in background worked

Home Is Where The Music Is by Hugh Masekela
Jul 24 2026

Super cool jazz. I didn’t realise how much I like jazz until I started this marathon.

Shaft by Isaac Hayes
Jul 29 2026
Arc Of A Diver by Steve Winwood
Jul 30 2026

Film score for a wholesome American movie like Toy Story. Or Big. Or any other early Tom Hanks movie. Well written, produced, etc but not setting the world on fire

Ill Communication by Beastie Boys
Jul 31 2026

More of the same? Perhaps…but no one does it quite the same

Bug by Dinosaur Jr.
Aug 02 2026

Do this band know what they are? Jingle-y guitar, metal guitar, bit of everything.

Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C.
Aug 03 2026

Nope. Still don’t get rap. I need a tune!

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
Aug 04 2026

Didn’t get it then and it sounds really dated now.

1977 by Ash
Aug 05 2026

Much better than I remember! Vocals are bit limited but I like the energy and there’s some great rock licks in this, right from the get go with Lose Control. And Girl From Mars was everywhere summer of 1995!

Aug 06 2026

I never listen to rap…but I’d listen to this again!! 😀 High energy and anger mixed with political messages. Love it.

The Visitors by ABBA
Aug 07 2026

Certainly a more “adult” ABBA but still very much ABBA. Less catchy than earlier stuff.

Natty Dread by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Aug 08 2026

I can cope with reggae as background music but actually listening to it I find hard. Everyone knows at least No Woman No Cry and I found that the most accessible track too of you don’t listen to reggae.

Oxygène by Jean-Michel Jarre
Aug 10 2026

Brought electronic music to the masses. Used everywhere on TV. Still sounds great. Still sounds ground breaking. Fabulous production. Pt 2 & 4 stand out even now. It’s hard to emphasise how different this was back in 1976!

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Aug 12 2026

Soundtracks are tricky as they often need to keep the same sound/feel across an entire movie. This has this problem, but luckily the sound/feel is super cool!

Low by David Bowie
Aug 15 2026

Sound and vision is great. Lots of electronica which I didn’t expect. That’s it was Gary Numan a couple of times! I want to give it more…but it would be just for S&V really…so

Chelsea Girl by Nico
Aug 16 2026

Blesk. Disperate. She has a different vocal but I would have preferred her fronting a regular guitar/bass/drum group and not the strings and horns. She's also deeply problematic as a person 😬😬😬
