This album is oozing in personality. Cash perfectly captures the feelings of guilt and yearning from prison life, while having the sense of humor to perform it within the prison he sings about. This album listened as a whole makes you feel like you are in the audience with the incarcerated. Lyrics are clever, and a testament to Cash's legacy.
An album that instantly feels dated and also experimental. I personally hate when an artist smushes 10 songs together into one but sure whatever. The soundtrack to a movie I wouldn't watch.
The only other cover album I've listened to completely was Weezer Teal, and this is better than that. Why don't artists make cover albums anymore?
Also Willie Nelson is still alive?!?!?!?!? What the heck I thought he's been dead for years.
I have personal beef with Steely Dan that's not anyone's fault. But seeing as this is my 3rd 70s album in 3 days, he's just not helping.
Like it was fine, but I just wanted it to be over sometimes.
please 1001 albums. i want an album that was made since the vietnam war ended.
Also I was a jazz kid from ages 12 to 18. and like its good jazz but it doesn't make me feel anything ya know?
I lied. I played Flight of the Foo Birds for my last Jazz concert of middle school. It took me right back. I miss my saxophone.
3 stars
The quintessential 60s band and the quintessential 60s sound. It is dated but in a nostalgic way, not a cringe way. I liked it.
3 stars.
what the heck is this.
one star jesus christ
cozy. not particularly offensive or memorable
3 stars i guess
gay cowboy music?
4 stars
finally an album i've heard of.
Californication is fine. I'm not the biggest chilis fan but I appreciate what they did for 2000s rock.
3.5 stars.
im sick of UK alt music. its so mid
"so what do you want to hear?"
A critique of 1001 Albums as a whole: I understood the significance of a johnny cash prison album from the other one I heard two weeks ago. I did not need to listen to two before I died.
Led Zeppelin is the worst of good classic rock. I can't say they're bad, but I would not purchase this album if I was 19 years old in 1969.
pink floyd is such a fascinating band. I get why people love them, but I didn't grow up listening to them. I like some of their songs, but these long experimental projects don't do much for me.
3 stars.
the main theme of this album is "long"
second theme is "dive bar"
i listened to this at work (like i do all the albums) and it was good focus music
3 stars
groovy
spotify said "you might like this: sad soul"
3 stars
did not slay the house down but my dad would love it
3 stars
My curse is kinda good. I've listened to so much altrock at this point that nothing really stands out but this album is fine.
2 stars only because it's so mid
i love that he got criticized for this album being too "rock".
you know. the most folksy 60s album i've heard.
yeah sure.
4 stars.
what an opener
if you told me this album was made in 2003 i probably would believe you at first
i liked it more than i thought i would. which is better than i can say for most of the albums on this list.
4 stars?
just girly things
3 stars
woah aren't these the guys from the big orb
3 stars
I retract previous statements. I do not support *all* women.
I hate UK alt rock but the smiths are the best of a bad genre. and this guy was from the smiths.
Edit:
TIL that this guy sucks as a human.
welp it was going to be 3 stars but now its 2 stars
DON'T HURT EM CLARINET
what a great album. I've never heard of lang before, but today, I am a fan.
5 stars
This album feels like one I grew up with, even though I didn't. This album is cozy and nostalgic, even though it isn't nostalgic for me. I first heard Vienna from a Tik Tok of a guy singing Karaoke. And in the few years since, I have fallen in love with the stranger.
There doesn't seem to be an album with this name on Spotify, so I listened to some of her greatest hits instead, as that seemed to be the intention of this inclusion. What a voice. Her talent and personality is so apparent in her performances.
I have to give this album 3 stars however, since I did not actually listen to it, just the artist.
Look I am a band kid but I really lost the plot with some of these songs. I am sure this group is more interesting in their live performances.
2 stars.
I don't know if I've ever heard this album before, but I can instantly see how it influenced rock for many years to come. I like.
I learned that the fact that I have had 0 albums past 2000 is a 1 in 160,000 odds.
I like how The Offspring's albums are all so different while also all being the same.
listened to most of it. It was fine
I liked how witchy it was. It inspired me to make a witch themed playlist. Not anything super grand but it was fun
4 stars? Maybe 3 ill see how i feel tomorrow.
A debate for the modern age: can you separate the art from the artist?
To argue for "yes," art is its own independent thing. It has a life of its own, outside of the individuals or team that created it. It represents history. It represents those who love the art and hate the art. Its story is completely independent of its artist, yet the artist is quintessential to its story. Art can be defined by its technical skill. A painting is realistic. A musical is performed well. Art can be defined by its impact to culture.
To argue for "no," we live in a digital age. By listening to this album on Spotify Premium, I am giving tiny amounts of money to the artist. The artist can then use the money to continue to live their lives as they choose, without my consent or contribution. By listening to this album willingly, you could argue that I support Kanye West. That I can be associated with him, as one of his "listeners." That title comes with baggage, because Kanye is not a good person, and it is important to me that I am one.
I don't know what the right answer is. It's a good album. Maybe even a great album. But to boil down its nuisances into a 1-5 star rating is impossible.
