That was awesome - live album recorded at Folsom prison is so punk and the audience cheers and laughs and boos added a ton.
Favorite song: cocaine blues
Fun and catchy AND short and sweet. Not the biggest fan of Elvis Costellos voice. Will listen to songs from this album again, can’t say the same for others on this list
Favorite songs: the beat
The album feels like it is actively trying to make me tense up waiting for the other shoe to drop. While I didn’t “like” it, it was super compelling and I totally lost myself in it (to the point where I fully missed my train stop).
Not for casual listening but if I had to pick a favorite it would be we suck young blood
Edit: not sure what I was on when I wrote this review? I love this album and have now returned to it multiple times. 4 stars!
I could make the obvious comment that all the songs sound the same, but that formula works. Favorite song is highway to hell and that could honestly be because I heard it first and then the rest of the songs blended together a bit. I also loved if you want blood & night prowler
Can’t stop listening to I bet you look good on the dancefloor. Overall great album, takes me back to high school - very nostalgic sound
I love Miss Misery but it’s not on the album. For that, 4 stars.
If I had been doing this project a few years ago when I was almost exclusively listening to “sad” music, this album would’ve gone triple platinum in my corded headphones. Today, still excellent, but not going to achieve that elusive 5th star.
Under the bridge is and has been one of my favorite songs, but a lot of the rest of this album could go. 79 minutes is about 30 too many minutes for a chili peppers album…
Great background music and when you tune in, great (maybe dated) lyrics, but overall, boring and not really my taste. Favorite: maggie may
My first 5!!! The production and everything is spectacular. I’ve never heard of this band or this album, but will definitely be added to the rotation.
Favorites:
Broken heart
Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space
Loved this album - it is definitely dramatic, but it works.
My favorites are Lover, you should’ve come over, Lilac Wine, & So Real, but I have to say this is one of the best renditions of Hallelujah I have ever heard
I appreciate the cultural significance of this album but it is not really my cup of tea. For that, a 2.
My favorites were god save the queen & pretty vacant
I prefer the grittiness in some of his earlier stuff, but Elvis’s voice is undeniable. This album just seems more polished and less interesting than his other songs.
Favorites: suspicious minds, in the ghetto (reminds me of that one new girl episode)
This album was great background music to listen to while working, walking, grocery shopping, etc. There is nothing truly special or individual about this album, but it was pleasant. My favorite was move any mountain.
I’ve never listened to depeche mode before but I really liked this album. It was moody and had super interesting sound. Loved it!
Favorites: Strangelove, never let me down again, behind the wheel, pimpf
Ugh. This album was so boring and repetitive. I was hoping that the lyrics would be a saving grace, but they were not. The xx have lovely voices but simply nothing to say. Because I told myself I’d pick a favorite from every album, my favorite is on hold because it sounds a little different from the rest and because unfortunately I resonated with the lyrics
Sue me I really liked it. In the end is so iconic but also loved many of the other songs. I don’t usually listen to this type of music but maybe I should….
Dad rock for sure but loved it. I loved Rikki, With a Gun, and the guitar solo in Pretzel Logic was fantastic. I definitely prefer Aja for an overall album as this one did start to feel like elevator music after a while - good thing it was only 33 minutes!
I think I just like electronic music. There was decent variety in this album too and I feel like that’s my usual critique of electronic albums. Not to be a baby but I was excited to have something from this century after too many 70s albums in a row :)
Favorites: Sparks, Eple, She’s so
This was great! I’ve never listened to this album top to bottom before and I loved it. Grungy, clever, and I wasn’t in high school in the 90s but dang I wish I were and I was listening to this in my parents basement as an angsty teen.
Favorites: serve the servants, pennyroyal tea
Favorites: Sparks, Eple, She’s so
Overall generic and repetitive - maybe I am biased because I had nirvana yesterday and from a grunge perspective, that was lightyears ahead of this. I liked the sound though and respect Mark Lanegan. Sworn and Broken & Traveler both were slightly more interesting and compelling than the rest.
I love a live album - feels like I’m a part of it. Also loved all the ad libs in there :) this album just made me smile. Is it my particular music taste? No, not at all. Will I listen to it again? No, probably not. Did I thoroughly enjoy listening to it today? Absolutely. And that’s why I’m doing this whole project! Favorite: medley: it’s all right/sentimental reasons
I actually really did like it. I have never listened to Moby before so I think I was immune to a lot of the criticism that this album was too commercial. I think if I played this in the background at a party it would be cool. Favorites were natural blues and why does my heart feel so bad
At first, I was like ENOUGH OF THIS CORNY 70s STUFF!!! But then I was begrudgingly toe tapping and then ultimately, come the second half of the album, it kind of rocked. Favorite song: Bye Bye Love
THIS ROCKS!!! Love the variety in the album and have to appreciate the cultural impact. Favorites: bohemian rhapsody (obviously), seaside rendezvous, you’re my best friend, death on two legs. Sorry 4 stars because of you know what
Alright. Enough of this era. I appreciate the experimentation and was laughing out loud at the gift but come on, it is not enjoyable.
