Chet is an album by jazz trumpeter Chet Baker first released in 1959. The record is sometimes subtitled The Lyrical Trumpet of Chet Baker. Chet features performances by Baker with alto flautist Herbie Mann, baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, pianist Bill Evans, guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist Paul Chambers, and either Connie Kay (on six tracks) or Philly Joe Jones (on four tracks) playing drums. It was recorded in December 1958 and January 1959 and released on the Riverside label. Though Baker was by the late 1950s known as much for his singing as his trumpet playing, this album is entirely instrumental. It contains 9 standard ballads (and the Chet Baker composition "Early Morning Mood" as an additional bonus track on the CD version) played in the styles of hard bop to cool jazz. Though the album is entirely devoted to explorations of the ballad mood, it includes considerable variety. The Chambers-Evans-Jones rhythm section was known at the time for their work with trumpeter Miles Davis.
Very relaxing jazz music
Never heard of this fellow but he can blow a mean trumpet.
Awesome album. Really set the mood. Love Chet.
Yes 5 Don't remember if "Chet Baker Sings" has been put on here. If not I would be a little surprised that you chose this one instead. Exactly what I needed a sunday morning though.
Trumpet instrumental
Jin my humble opinion azz albums are a bit of a rabbit hole for this list because it's a whole other world of music. Still, there's no question that this is a five and a great listen. Thanks for nominating it.
I’ve heard of Chet Baker. Some nice jazz trumpet here! I loved it!
Wonderful. Thank you!
Top notch!
Wonderful! I loved this very much and am so happy to become more familiar with Chet Baker's music.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Alone together
pure gold
Damn, what a lineup.
Gorgeous, smooth and melodic. Dripping with the cool jazz style. Excellent suggestion, thank you very much indeed.
I could just paste in any of a half dozen of my micro-reviews of jazz albums: I like jazz but don't feel like I have the sophistication to really "get" it. I liked this. Guy had a tough life. Heroin is the worst.
Mjög næs.
Jazz canónico trompetero. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Jazz is not typically my musical genre of choice and yet, I enjoyed this.
Chet Baker is a fantastic jazz singer. This album is none of that. I's about an even better jazz trumpeter.
I actually loved this
Relaxing jazz trumpet. An nice but mournful way to spend 42 minutes. Rating: 3.5 Playlist track: How High the Moon Date listened: 04/12/24
Really beautiful album, subtle and soothing jazz. Don't know anything about Chet Baker but I dig this. "September Song," ironically, is going into my Christmas playlist. Perfect for that. Great choice, whoever picked this one! Favorite tracks: September Song, Alone Together, It Never Entered My Mind, If You Could See Me Now, Time on my Hands. Album art: Almost startling clarity to this photo, seems like something that could've been released in the last year or two, but nope: 1959. Looking like a lonesome cowboy. 4/5
Always happy when we can get more jazz on this list. I'm not sure I've heard Chet before but I think I've heard his name. This was very classic and relaxing. Great to wake up to on a cold winter day.
The quintessential sultry, smoky, noir lounge music. I just imagined I was Humphrey bogart solving the mystery of a missing New York socialite and it fit the vibe perfectly
This is some great jazz. Chet baker had a wild life and there must be something about making jazz that is super depressing because so many of them had troubled lives but made great music. This is the type of jazz I could listen to for hours just cool well played horns. Very nice addition and glad I got to hear something new that’s good. 8.3/10
Great Jazz album up there with the best jazz albums on the original list.
A decent jazz album, I wasn’t familar with Baker’s work before this so it was nice to put some tunes to the name. The instrumentals were flawless, just wish this had a bit more bite/personality to give it some flair.
It is a very enjoyable jazz album, but it is still just music, which makes it a kind of lounge score for film or TV, so I cannot classify it as an album with performers. 2.5 stars.
It's nice, but feels like elevator music. 3 stars.
Pleasant as background music during work.
Ok
It's really nice but also kind of so nice it just washes over you. I liked it but didn't love it.
What a great listen for an autumn afternoon. Fave Songs: Alone Together, September Song, Time on My Hands (You in My Arms), It Never Entered My Mind, Tis Autumn
Chet
Very chill jazz. Would have personally gone for "Chet Baker Sings" for a Chet album. Guy was both a great trumpeter and a singer. Don't do three trillion kilograms of heroin, kids.
Man, in a weird and maybe counterintuitive way I feel like I would have enjoyed this more if it was someone other than Chet The tunes are smooth as hell, with some incredible musicians (including the iconic Evans/Chambers/Jones rhythm section) playing remarkably lovely jazz, and Baker’s trumpet playing is truly wonderful. But once you’ve heard the beautiful 1954 album Chet Baker Sings, it’s not that easy to listen to a Chet Baker album where he doesn’t
This was too soft and couldn't hold my attention. I didn't even realise it was over. 2/5.
I'm sure if you're into jazz then this is fantastic but I'm not!
Jazz just doesn't do it for me personally
Sorry chet, you’re not the one for me.
