Hot Buttered Soul
Isaac HayesYou could have told me this was written in 2020 and I would have believed it. Very modern feel with the guitar and orchestrations. Fantastic!
You could have told me this was written in 2020 and I would have believed it. Very modern feel with the guitar and orchestrations. Fantastic!
I bet Andy Sandberg is hony for harp music.
So far this has been the most unexpectedly amazing album on the list. How have I not heard about this album? Loved it.
The first half is some great contemporary jazz, in the 2nd half there is some cheese white-boy 80s hip-hop. It's probably a 3.5 but I was so surprised how much I enjoyed the 1st half, I gave it a 4 star.
One of the best albums of all time.
Great album, marking a big step forward for REM. Contains the landmark song End of the World which helped to combine rap and pop music.
You can hear the first notes of new wave and synth-punk in this album. Great stuff.
You could have told me this was written in 2020 and I would have believed it. Very modern feel with the guitar and orchestrations. Fantastic!
The roots of Chicago blues. Muddy Waters has a great classic sound with both his guitar and his vocals. He laid the foundation for years to come.
Not really my cup of tea.
Classic Bruce
An absolute classic
The birth of double bass drum
I had heard many of these songs before but I had not listened to the album from start to finish. What an absolute classic.
A band and album i had never heard of. I was pleasantly surprised with the folksy rock.
Great roots of grunge
Pleasantly surprised
Pretty good
One of the most underrated band of the 60s. This album and Cosmos Factory are two of the most influential albums in American music.
A couple of good dance songs, overall average
Super impressed
The roots of punk!
Good world music but not my particular taste
I think this is favorite album of the 90s
Top 10 albums of the 90s
So far this has been the most unexpectedly amazing album on the list. How have I not heard about this album? Loved it.
Sounds like typical white guy 70s music.
Kinda loud
Interesting mix of metal and classical music.
Better than I was expecting but still all I could think about was the Exorcist.
Interesting Spanish language music.
Pretty good follow-up to Rumors
I had never heard this one but really like this album. It is like a mix of Wilco and Muse.
Great first solo album...sorry, Art
This feels like the most 80s of all records.
Traffic is a perfect blend of piano, organ and R&B sound. This is a real defining album for future sounds.
Another great find in this list. Loved it.
I don't like New Order...except for Elegia.
I lived this as well as Purple Rain. Fantastic album!
Another decent but not overly inspiring 80s album. Echo seems to skirt the line between new wave and rock.
Another pleasant surprise, some enjoyable Electronica dance music.
Great 80s Electronica
My favorite Paul Simon album ever
Its ok
A couple of good songs. Bjorn is weird.
Didn't like
What a classic!
The best!
My favorite jazz album of all time
A phenomenal rock album
Absolutely amazing!
I liked the interaction with the crowd.
Pretty good
I really like this album
Fantastic soft rock album
Some great piano, he is one of the kings 🤴
Great cross of David Bowie and early punk
Loved it
A couple good songs
It not my favorite
It was ok
Better than I thought
In the top 5 best Radiohead albums
Again an unexpected gem
Not my cup of tea
The best of the best
It was ok
80s rock
Some jangly rock
One of the grunge classics
Surprisingly good
Its a classic but kind of dark for me.
Average REM album
Probably just me, but I've this album
Not great
One of the best Motown albums
Some smooth songs
I can hear the foundations of 2000s EMD and electronica in here. Liked
It was ok
Way better than I remember.
Ok hip hop
I didn’t know they did Jiggy
Classic R&B
Love it!
I liked it, Truman didn't listen.
I hadn't heard this album before
Loved it
One of the best albums of all time.
Pretty good
Didn't love it
A couple of songs I really like.
I liked it...kind of grungy
Probably a 3.5
Most modern album I've had so far
One of the classics
Like it
Absolutely loved it
Good
I consider this the foundation of modern pop music and jazz and blues.
Probably #4 favorite U2 album
My #3 favorite U2 album
Love the Tramp
On of the best electronic albums I've heard
Probably my favorite Beastie Boys album. I love the contrast from Sure Shot to Sabotage.
Another roots of punk
This was one of my first favorite albums. It is so good from start to finish.
A couple of good funky jam bad songs
I think i am marking this down because I expected more. 3-4 really good songs and the rest are standard rock songs.
Better than I thought, sounded like early Pink Floyd.
Ok...not my favorite
Fantastic
For punk, it is very thoughtful and interesting
Didn't love it...pretty basic EDM
Fantastic Radiohead...I live High and Dry
I love the Scenario but I hadn't heard much of this album. It was really good.
2nd best S&G album
Good indie music
The best of the best
Standard Frank Zappa
Loved it...undiscovered gem
Classi. Metal
My favorite Cat Stevens album
She has a beautiful voice. I loved the Beatles cover.
Another underrated Americana album
Another good hidden gem. Listened while riding the bike through the streets of DC, really enhanced the experience.
Classic
Roots of metal
That is a lot of drums
Let the neo-punk revolution start.
Of course I love Epic but there are some other good songs too.
One of my favorite albums of all time.
This album has significant musical and sentimental impact in my life. Beautiful blend of modern dance and blues music.
A couple of good songs.
I love this album, there is an unowned nostalgia to these songs. It takes be back to a time I never lived. Fantastic imagery and musicality.
There were a couple of songs that were very good. I really like that early EDM sounds.
It was OK
The music is always interesting and the lyrics are full of great imagery but that voice...ugh.
Amazingly soulful sounds and fantastic instrumentation.
Really should be a 4.5 stars. Some of the best Brit Rock songs done in the late 60s.
Such a monumental album. I just feel opposed to the themes and tone.
They really have such a distinctive sounds. There are two iconic songs on this album, Love Hurts and Kathy's Clown. The other songs sound like early 60s bangers.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Perfectly constructed with poetic verses mixed into rock hits and brilliant melodies.
I like a few songs by the Smiths but not these ones.
Another great find...I really enjoyed this record.
How did i not know about this album. 1992 is right in my wheelhouse but I have never listened to it before that I can recall.
Great album
This type of folk music is not my favorite but I appreciate it from a historical perspective.
Widely acclaimed as Springsteen's best album, I really like it but would probably put it 3rd on my list of his records.
I think this album transitioned music in the 90s from everyone jumping on the grunge train to the new alternative/mainstream rock path.
Wow! So glad for this recommendation. This is a fantastic album, completely changed the 90s music scene. In my top 10 of all time.
Quite enjoyed this one
This and a few other albums started the multi-instrument folk rock band revolution. Good stuff.
The 90s trying to shed the last of the 80s.
First time I think I listened to the entire album...better than I thought it would be.
Better than I thought
Great songs but live albums never quite recreate the inperson experience.
An album that transitions the 70s into the 80s
This is one of my top 20 favorite albums of all time. The songs just drip with nostalgia for me. Love it!
Ok Latin based album
Probably underrated due to its influence on future punk and new wave.
Good, fun rock album
Didn't like...in my opinion the worst part of 80s music
There are three Beatles albums i would give 4 stars and this is on of them. Really just an ok album, I give it 4 stars mainly for the cover art.
Probably a 3.5 but rounding up. Better than I thought.
Another 4.5, just below a classic. This album influenced the next decade of indie music.
Another quintessential 80s album
I have found i just don't love shoegaze music. I appreciate the musicality of it, but it isn't for me.
Another great find!
One of the most specific period albums of the past 50 years. When you hear it, you know exactly what year it is and what the conditions look like.
Way to creepy for me.
A couple good songs, but sad and angry
I give it like a 4.6. Probably my favorite Stones album with its deep blues roots.
Started out great but the end of it kind of fizzled out.
I think this is Bob Dylan's best album, this had significant impact on the culture and community at the time.
I quite enjoyed this modern rock album
Just ok...I don't think I get the hype around MBV
Great album, very ahead of its time
The great, melloa VU style really comes through on this album. Pale Blue Eyes might be my favorite VU song of all time.
Pretty good, very Scottish sounding
Not my favorite Elvis Costello
4 stars because he's a legend
Too much swearing for me, but good beats
Interesting early 80s new wave-ish rock
I always forget about Dinosaur Jr 🦕 Great pre-grunge band, totally doesn't sound like 1987.
This is great late 50s period music for me. Reminds me of my dad.
Pretty good, not my favorite Marvin Gaye album but solid.
I put this in the realm of some of the best albums of all time.
Some Tom Waits I love and some I just can't get into. This album has such a cool, downtown jazz club feel to it (by design). Really enjoyed it.
I put this at a 3.5 mainly for Cult of Personality. The rest is ok
This album is a much more pure rock album than some of their later work. This for sure my favorite ZZ album.
The quintessential singer songwriter of the 70s. The songs are beautiful, thoughtful with melodies that connect with your soul. If you don't find something on this album you like, you might be dead inside.
I can definitely hear the roots of later rappers intertwined in Public Enemy.
3.5...I am just not a fan of the Prog Rock.
So next to Legend, this is probably the best BMar album. Great development of songs and style.
3.5 for me. I thought it sounded like Carol King recorded a Motown album. A few good songs but not my favorite.
4.5...I love the messages of strength and diversity.
I like Frank but I didn't think this was one of his best.
Probably more like a 3.75 with a couple of really good, innovative songs. Overall some hits and some misses.
Good foundational Afrobeats jazz.
I liked this more than I thought I would. Musically quite good.
This is by far my favorite Rolling Stones album. I am not a huge RS fan, but this album has their most innovative work with a perfect blend of rock, blues and country.
This is the Stones I'm used to, very mediocre in my opinion.
I had never heard this album before. I was familiar with his work in the Byrds but this was a great folk rock album and I am surprised it wasn't more popular. Maybe it just missed its time in history.
Love this album, the organ sounds in it are some of the best to come out of the 60s. Beautiful recording.
Interesting, space rock with a couple of good songs. Not amazing though.
Nick Drake is like a shadowy, mystery musician that made a few great albums. I quite like this album too.
I like Moorhead but after awhile it all kinda sounds the same.
Probably a 3.5 but this sounded so 80s...and not in a good way.
Better than I thought it would be, definitely about 10 years ahead of her time.
4.5 stars, a previously unheard gem.
Interesting Indian music, not my favorite but I appreciate the sounds.
I give it a 4 because I appreciate that Little Richard was a foundational rock and roll performer. I like the music but it gets a bit one dimensional after a while.
Fantastic energy and amazing layered sounds throughout the entire album.
I'm going 5 stars on this one. Some of the best NYC rock to come out of the early 70s. 3 of my top 50 songs of all time too
The ripping guitars of early Deep Purple were just fantastic.
I love Block Rocking Beats, the rest was ok.
One of the RHCP best albums.
I enjoyed the album, 1st time I have ever heard it. It sounded a bit like Wilco.
Interesting but not really my jam
Didn't love it
Another ok album
A fantastic album where I think REM found their voice for their subsequent albums.
Average for Bowie
I know I love this album more than most. Part of it is nostalgia, this was an album that came out when I first started to enjoy and understand music. Also, I think this album was an island of roots rock in a time of synth pop, New wave music and rising hair bands. Great album!
Pretty good
You can hear the foundations of 70s Brit rock in this album. This must have been quite revolutionary at the time.
I always forget how much I enjoy Dire Straits. Ironically, Sultans of Swing was one of my least favorite songs on this album.
Probably a 3.5 really, quite good and an album I'd never listened to before.
4.5 for sure, one of the better unsung albums of history and ushered in an new era in music.
Loved it
Another album that you can see throughout music and culture.
One good song...others are average. It sounds like an album that was really trying to copy the Beatles.
This is probably my least favorite S&G album, but that being said it is still amazing.
Great interactions with the crowd, and beautiful collaborations with June
Fantastic!
Closer to 3.75 stars, interesting world music
I can appreciate it but the sounds are just not my favorite.
3.5 to be fair, I hadn't listened to this one before. A couple of good songs but not my favorite.
A dark and brooding feel to it. Lots to say but the musicality doesn't spark much in me.
I quite like this album too. I have heard of the Doves but I dont think I had heard them. This has a good pre-Muse sound to ir.
I liked the deep cuts better than the known hits
I'll give it a 4 because of the iconic sound, I thought much of it sounded the same but still pretty good.
One of my favorite rock albums in history. This is absolutely a classic.
Another surprising find...I have heard of Ryan Adams for years but never listened to him. This album was fantastic, a great blend of blues, rock and Americana.
Once again, another gem that i hadn't heard before. Fantastic album with classic R&B/funk sound.
I liked the blend if punk and new wave sounds.
A good song
Interesting post-punk album
Loved the beats and the flow but playing it in the office was a bit of an issue.
3.5...a great sound but again, playing it at work is difficult
Classic R&B/funk album. One famous song and lots of other good songs.
I just can't get into Yes
So 90s, this sounds like it comes straight out of a Fresh Prince episode. Fantastic!
Very standard 80s and new wave, synth pop. The songs focus on those darker, minor tones and I didn't hear any particularly catchy song.
Still one of my favorite albums of all time. The variety of styles and symbolism used on the record is amazing. There is a little bit of fluff and filler but not much.
Interesting album
Great groovey, folk rock
Great album.
One of the best songs ever written. The other songs are fantastic as well. This is a 4.5 for sure.
Oh how I want to like this album. I understand it is more artsy than some other Bowie stuff. I just don't find it pleasant to listen to.
Great oldies rock
Sounds like Portland
Great post-ska reggae songs. I would give this 3.5 stars. Not groundbreaking but a good listen, especially if you are on the beach with a mango juice.
Another great find, Brian Eno surprises me with the scope of genres in which he works. Very cool.
Never heard it but it sounds like something played to parody the 60s in San Francisco.
Wow! Another great album and it took me down a rabbit hole of bands/albums id never heard before.
The dramatic, whiney voice is a huge turn off for me
This is just a fantastic pop album. Loved it
3.5...a nostalgic classic for sure. If you take all of Bon Jovi's best songs you get one great album.
Loved this album, it is a beautiful composition of spacey, groove rock.
This sounds quintessential early 2000s post punk.
I'm always intrigued by 4 song LPs like this one. I did like it, the style is somewhere between Raggae and Afro-Jazz
This album brings up memories of being deployed to Iraq in 2007. I listened to the heck out of these songs.
Love this album
I hadn't listened to the 1st album, it was fantastic!
I consider the Wall as on of 10-20 perfect albums. The songs maintain the theme well, some have hooks, some are more melancholy. The album has 2 of the best guitar solos of all time
A vaguely EDM album which seems about 20 years ahead of its time.
This is my favorite album of the 90s
Fun little punk album
Such a great voice
Obviously, a weird album but great musicality and tone
Good classic reggae
I have to give this a 5, her voice, sound, the throwback style but not too cheeky is perfect.
Not my favorite TH album but pretty good
The title track is so overplayed that I forget how amazing and late 70s iconic the rest of the album is.
Nice folky, almost country album.
This is in my top 5 favorite albums. It might be the most perfect album of all time. The vocals, the variety of sounds, the timing and pace are simply amazing 👏 🙌
Never listened to the full album...not bad
This might be the most efficient album every, 36 minutes of straight banners
I live the Seed
You cab hear how the moved a lot of mainstream rock into the grunge and punk genre.
Short sharp songs...this album always makes me happy. I would say the best White Stripes album.
Fun techno, EDM album
A couple of good tunes, but not may favorite genre
This is an album that every time I listen to it I think this is my favorite album of all time. The sounds and textures of it are so progressive and unlike anything else in the era.
Loved it
I was going to go 4 stars but then I listened again and realized this one is absolutely a classic. Some of the best and most "singable" of Billy's tunes.
Some of Elton's best work
I know I am in the minority but I love this album. I think this record launch an entirely new genere of music with house and DJ beats.
Decent little album
Better than I thought it would be, but it is oh so 70s
Way better than I expected
I think this album transitioned rock from the 80s hair-metal to the 90s hard and alt rock. Such an iconic sound.
I've always thought this was kind of an amazing album from the period
Love it
Don't like
One of the best of Miles
Probably a 3.5 for this list. Good group of moody songs
Great merge of EDM and ambient genres.
Music ok, wierd talk-singing isn't my favorite
It Ziggy Stardust is a 5-star classic masterpiece this is a solid 4-star amazing album. Aladdin Sane is probably closer to a 4.5 star rating, with his wide variety of sounds and textures in all the songs.
This album embodies the evolution of the 60s sound.
Definitely not my cup of tea. I can see how some would enjoy this album but I didn't care for the wailing guitars and doomsday lyrics
Love this album, it takes me back to HS and skipping 7th period to go play volleyball in the park.
A couple of good songs
2 good songs but not as strong as some of his later work.
It sounded like I thought it would
I had heard of this band but I dont think I'd ever heard them. I really enjoyed the blues/rock fusion.
Another great find. I am excited to look into more Lambchop
Quick, crisp oldies rock
Don't like Joy Division...at all
Pretty good, I give it 4 stars because it was clearly ahead of its time.
Eh...I can appreciate that there is some avante guarde merit there but not for me.
Beginnings of a great bad
Not really punk, as it is touted, but a great album all the same.
Groovey ska band
A solid 3.5 as the music transitions from oldies to more developed rock and roll.
I love this album he has a great tone quality and fantastic lyrics.
Right at the intersection of Rock, folk and blues.
Better than I remembered.
Definitely interesting, not the most amazing thing I've heard but a good listen.
Classic 70s, not my favorite but its a classic
In my top 10 favorite albums of all time
A solid 4.5 ⭐ the sounds and lyrics on this album are classic 60s. The song Triad is bizarre.
I consider this one of the most underrated albums of the late 60s (yeah, it came out in 1970 but its a 60s album). A finer collection of roots rock you will not find.
The most New Wavy sounding REM album
A masterful album
Terence's comment that this was the most important album since Sgt Pepper has not aged well. I like the blend of soul and 80s synth but not that epic.
Another great find. I love a song with French horn as an accent element
Some good songs 🎵
This album sounds like a pop star becoming an angsty teenager. Some good songs, some a bit whiny
Great throwback album
Johnny's voice on this album is epic!
Pretty good, Latin techno beats
A solid 1st release from the Eagles
5 might be a bit high but I gave it that score because it was so unexpected but yet still an amazing record. I was blown away by the depth of feeling in this amazing jazz album
A beautiful folk rock album
What a weird album. These songs sound like they would be used for a 1971 B-movie about a murderous band of hippies, especially during a scene where they are dancing around chanting. All filmed with a dreamy, grease lens of course.
Better than I expected it would be
Great classic rock album
Ya know, this album was better than I remembered. Lots of angsty screaming but some good songs in there too.
Nice, smooth and soulful jazz album
I like the Hives. They are easy to listen to with catchy, punchy songs.
I forget what a great guitarist Frampton is. Fun to hear it in a live venue.
Good but a bit angsty
A hit machine, I love these songs
This really feels like the 90s as the New Wave and Electronic developed into EDM. I'd give this a 3.5 if available. Not amazing but a cornerstone of music to come.
Love the Beach Boys. Crazy when this came out it was their 8th album in 3 years...amazing! This album was a pivotal move between their first, more basic albums and their more ambitious albums such at Pet Sounds and Smile.
More interesting than I thought it would be but overall an average album
Not bad, but it sounded like fairly generic electro-pop
Classic rock at its finest
A 4.5 for sure, this was the last of the Beatles really young pop albums. Some great hits
Fun album but fairly one dimensional
I'll go 3.5, so standard 60s psychedelic jams
Yet another great find. I don't know how I missed this, the timeline is right in my wheelhouse. Great 90s non-grunge rock
A bit too melancholy for me
I didn't like this one at all. In my mind, it is all that I don't enjoy about 80s new wave, the plastic synth, the high-pitched vocals, weird themes...not a fan
Average Latin vibe album
Multi-genre album, that i hadn't heard of before, but I quite liked
Great mid-50s orchestra jazz
For an 80s new wave, this is one of my favorite
2 really good songs, then a weird bunch of other stuff
I really enjoyed this album, the Kinks are highly underrated.
I have tried to like Nick Cave for years. His music isn't horrible, but it isn't particularly enjoyable to me. It sounds like very basic, Brit rock.
Didn't love it
Another interesting album I had never heard before. It is a great blend of folk and rock.
2 good songs
Unique blend of psychedelic folk and rock.
The Boos are a very nostalgic band for me as I "found" them in the early 90s. Because of that, I probably rate them a bit higher than deserved, but I still really like them.
The vocal arrangements on this album are probably the best of all-time. I think this close to a perfect album.
This album sounds like the forerunner to Mumford and Son, Bon Iver and other folk rock acts. Pretty good, I'd listen again.
Ughhh...I hate this type of 80's synth soul. This is literally my least favorite type of music
Great 90s vibe, I'd give this a solid 3.5
Tom Waits is weird. Some of his music have great melodies and jazzy vibes, others are just bizarre.
This album defined hard rock for the 80s. Fantastic guitar and I really prefer David Lee Roth's vocals too.
A couple of good songs
This is in the all-time top 10 album, classic lyrics and songwriting.
Another album that is famous for one song but I thought was better than expected.
Wow! This was so much better than j remember. This definitely shaped the genre in the early 2000s
Didn't like
Crazy that this album was made in 1988. It sounds so mid-90s. I early like it.
Interesting from a music history standpoint
Pretty good
Funky world beqt vibe
Ughh...more thrashy, screamy. Not a fan. I can appreciate the guitar and drum work but that is about it.
Great album with a lot of energy.
I quite enjoyed this album. Great funky beats.
Before the lemons. Before the messiah complex. Before Adam Clayton’s lolling penis on the inlay of ‘Achtung Baby’. Before any of these divisive factors, there was ‘The Joshua Tree’ and holy shit, it is incredible. This is U2's magnum opus and for my money one of the Top 10 albums in history. It has heart, feeling and musicality...beyond that, it is interesting and pleasant to listen to. 5 stars for sure
Not my cup of tea
Definitely one of the first punk albums of all time
I'll give it a 4 because it is a classic but it is a bit repetitive.
I bet Andy Sandberg is hony for harp music.
Very enjoyable country album with a lot of feeling.
The "2nd side" of this album is one of the best ever.
It was ok
Good grungy punk
Very sultry, kind of interesting but it sounds very similar.
I will give it 4 stars for 2 iconic 70s songs. The rest is a 3 star album.
The eas way better than I thought it would be. Amazing, soulful blues rock
Thats a lot of songs
Fantastic album
I will go 4 stars because there are 4 good songs on here. There are several skips but a few of the high quality songs have become iconic, so JT gets the bump from 3 to 4.
Interesting, but avante garde music is not really my thing.
In the top 5 best 80s Heavy Metal albums ever.
Sounded like I thought it would
Not my thing
Groovy, ambient almost lo-fi hip-hop before that was a thing.
This is one of my least favorite Zeppelin albums but it's still quite good.
Heading in to the 70s with some funky jams.
Horrible
Phenomenal progressive jazz record.
I like his style, some good folk rock songs.
Interesting, but pretty good music from members of the Talking Heads.
Not my style but pretty good stuff.
Boo....didn't like this and I like music from that generation. I feel like this snuck into the list for some ulterior reason.
Liked it, didn't love it
This might be my favorite Elvis Costello album. It is beautiful and melodic with great lyrical imagery.
Probably a 3.7 but I will round up.
Loved this album. Perfect to play at a party in the background or just to study with.
Ughh..how did this make it on the list. I understand it has cultural relevance for the time but so do bell-bottoms and cholera.
This is a band I haven't spent a lot of time with this band but their music was better than i remember. I loved the mix of punk and new wave sounds.
Never heard of it, actually loved it
No my jam and not even the best ABBA tunes
Such a classic
New find! Loved it
Everybody loves Dolly
Reminds me of the 1st year of university. An extra 1/2 star for nostalgia.
Not as good as CSN, but solid
So fantastic songs and baseline grunge tunes, but it lacks the musical identity of many Radiohead albums. Still a solid listen.
Pretty good, roots rock album
I will give it a solid 3.5, lotta filler for a double album
Obviously very different from the disco jams of the late 70s
Interestingly, Bohemian Rhapsody was one of my least favorite songs on this album. There is a lot of great music there that doesn't get recognized.
I am bias because I really like Wilco, but I love the sounds of this album. There is a peaceful, folk rock tone to the songs.
This is Still best solo work, great songs and very cohesive.
The first half is some great contemporary jazz, in the 2nd half there is some cheese white-boy 80s hip-hop. It's probably a 3.5 but I was so surprised how much I enjoyed the 1st half, I gave it a 4 star.
Sent me on a Jurassic 5 deep dive, I quite liked it.
A solid 3.5 in my book
Led Zeppelin IV is an absolute rock masterpiece that still resonates with timeless brilliance. From the iconic opening of "Black Dog" to the thunderous climax of "When the Levee Breaks," this album showcases Zeppelin's musical prowess. "Stairway to Heaven" remains an epic, a journey from serene acoustic beginnings to a soaring crescendo. "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Rock and Roll" exude energy and grit. With Page's electrifying guitar work, Plant's wailing vocals, Bonham's thunderous drumming, and Jones's versatile bass, this album defines classic rock. It's a sonic adventure, an album you can revisit endlessly. A true gem in the rock pantheon.
I like it but it is not my favorite Radiohead album. Probably #5 or 6.
I feel like this album gets overlooked in MJs category, it might night be quite as strong as Thriller or Off the Wall but it is pretty solid.
I really think this is one of the more underrated albums of the 90s. It really gave birth to a lot of the lo-fi hip-hop sounds.
The 2000s were a pivotal era for music, witnessing the rise of indie rock and an explosion of innovative sounds. Amongst this sonic renaissance, "Hot Fuss" by The Killers stands as a beacon of musical evolution. This album, released in 2004, not only captured the essence of the times but also reshaped the future of music. With its electrifying blend of post-punk, new wave, and synth-pop, "Hot Fuss" breathed fresh life into rock music. The infectious hooks, anthemic choruses, and enigmatic lyrics struck a chord with listeners, making hits like "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" instant classics. What truly sets "Hot Fuss" apart is its ability to traverse genres effortlessly, incorporating elements of dance and glam rock into a cohesive masterpiece. The album's impact is undeniable, as it inspired countless artists to experiment with their sound, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. In the annals of the 2000s, "Hot Fuss" by The Killers shines as a transformative force, an album that not only encapsulated the spirit of the times but also helped redefine the future of music. It remains a timeless classic, reminding us of the lasting influence that great music can wield
Cool, instrumental album
So cool hear famous songs that I didn't know the origin. Good power pop
Really liked this album
It was ok, a real 80s vibe to it
This album is where the Beatles traded "yeah, yeah, yeah" for introspective brilliance. A musical kaleidoscope blending folk, rock, and introspective lyrics. Timeless melodies and innovative songwriting make it a perennial top 10 contender, proving that sometimes the soul speaks loudest when it's rubbery.
Funky 60s pop hazz
Classic metal and it sounds so much prettier than the metal today. Interesting album.
Let It Bleed: the Rolling Stones' sonic masterpiece that bleeds raw energy, timeless lyrics, and Mick Jagger's vocals that age like a fine rock 'n' roll vintage. If albums could wear leather jackets, this one would have a permanent spot in the Hall of Cool."
Really enjoyed this album. It has an incredible soulful vibe with some top-notch guitar licks.
Good beginning to their career
It was ok...not my favorite
Probably his 4th best solo album.
Didn't love it
One of the best follow-up albums ever.
Again, better than I expected
Probably my least favorite album I have heard on here
I don't think of myself as a Smiths or Morrissey fan, but this was quite good.
I really enjoyed this sound
Who's Next delivers a sonic punch that echoes through time, like a musical meteorite leaving a crater of legendary tracks. From 'Baba O'Riley's electronic rebellion to 'Behind Blue Eyes' soulful introspection, this album is a rock masterpiece, proving The Who's legacy is not just a fleeting moment, but an everlasting sonic journey.
"Harvest by Neil Young is like a musical crop yielding a harvest of quirky brilliance. It's the only album where you can simultaneously sway to the tunes and contemplate the deep, philosophical implications of the harmonica. It's so good that even scarecrows would ditch their posts to two-step in the fields. Neil Young didn't just plant seeds with this album; he cultivated a garden of musical hilarity that leaves you wondering if your ears just experienced a musical harvest festival.
Soild, Southern blues album
Probably my 3rd favorite Doors album
Not my cup of tea
Another great find, I had heard a few of these songs but the entire album is great!
I'd say a solid 3.5, not quite a 4 on this list. I enjoyed some of the folky, rocky songs.
Santana's "Abraxas" is a foundational rock classic that seamlessly blends Latin rhythms with electrifying guitar solos. Each track is a vibrant fusion of styles, creating an album that's timeless and utterly captivating.
I will say it was interesting
Better than I remember Afghan Wings, but still for this list probably a 3.5
Fun bluesy album
"My Generation" by The Who: A musical time machine that takes you back to the revolutionary '60s. It's like listening to rebellious youth wrapped in a mod suit – an audio rebellion served with a side of British wit. If this album were a person, it would probably smirk at authority and then break into a spontaneous guitar solo. Cheers to The Who for providing the soundtrack to generations of teenage angst and timeless coolness!
Fun OG punk
A very late 90s sound of rock/punk with emerging Electronica. I'll go a 3.8 on this one.
Van Morrison's 'Moondance' is a sonic awakening through jazz-infused bliss. Each track is a moonlit dance of soulful melodies and poetic lyrics—a musical rendezvous that leaves you craving more. It's not just an album; it's a celestial groove that transcends time. This I'd truly one of the best albums of all time!
A lot better than the Eileen song. A solid 3.5 stars.
Interesting, weird album
Beautiful acoustic guitar 🎸
This album is the bridge from 70s to 90s rock
Another great find, I could see this album being a large influence on many early 70s artists.
The seedling of the grunge tree grew here
Love Willie, fun album of cover songs. I'll give it a bump for Willie but it's probably a 3.5 star album.
Achtung Baby is my 3rd favorite U2 album and a great departure from their previous work.
Lots of familiar songs
Ugh, how was this on the list?? Listening to this album was painful.
In the vast expanse of jazz's temporal landscape, "Time Out" stands as a masterful anomaly—a paradoxical masterpiece that both defies and defines its era. The Dave Brubeck Quartet's groundbreaking 1959 release boldly ventures into uncharted rhythmic territories, epitomizing the boundless experimentation of the post-war jazz scene. Each track is a meticulously crafted sonic journey, where Brubeck's piano prowess intertwines seamlessly with Paul Desmond's ethereal saxophone melodies, Joe Morello's intricate drum patterns, and Eugene Wright's steady bass lines. At its core, "Time Out" is an audacious exploration of odd time signatures, notably the iconic 5/4 of "Take Five" and the hypnotic 9/8 of "Blue Rondo à la Turk." Yet, beyond its technical virtuosity, the album resonates on a deeper level, transcending mere musical innovation to evoke a profound sense of timelessness. With "Time Out," The Dave Brubeck Quartet not only crafted a timeless classic but also redefined the very essence of jazz itself—a testament to the enduring power of creative exploration and artistic ingenuity.
Interesting country roots album
Better than an average post-pop princess performance. Some intelligent, thoughtful songs.
Possibly R.E.M.'s best album
It's a fun lovin hip hop album, a solid 3.5 stars
Beautiful album with distinct imagery in thr melodies and lyrics
I loved this album when it came out, but I hadn't listened to it in awhile. I enjoyed revisiting these songs.
Another one that was better than I thought it would be. Like many disco albums by the 3rd or 4th song it all kind of runs together but the first half of the album was solid.
Reggae classic
Ughh...I really don't enjoy this music. I struggle to see the talent and creativity in the style and genre.
Perfect background music album
Solid 4.5 - In "Sheer Heart Attack," Queen unfurls a kaleidoscopic barrage of musical prowess, blending genres with abandon and dexterity. From the thunderous stomp of "Stone Cold Crazy" to the whimsical art-rock odyssey of "Lily of the Valley," the album showcases the band's eclectic range and flamboyant charm. Freddie Mercury's operatic vocals soar over Brian May's intricate guitar work, creating a sonic tapestry that defies convention and invites repeated exploration. Tracks like "Killer Queen" and "Now I'm Here" pulsate with infectious energy, while the tender balladry of "Dear Friends" offers a poignant counterpoint. "Sheer Heart Attack" is a captivating journey through Queen's imaginative universe.
A beautiful, sad, sultry album...one of his best.
I am kind of surprised this isn't more famous album. I like it better than their previous work, but had not heard anything off it.
Never heard it but pretty good.
For my money, this album is a 5. I don't see a wasted track on here and so much of what REM produced in this and the last two albums ended up influencing rock music for generations. Absolutely fantastic.
The album is oozing with a mid-70s vibe.
Loved it! This album is a great blend of gospel, blues and hip hop. A great vibe.
Not there best but a fee good songs
Eric Clapton is bringing it on this album.
I got this album the day it came out, which was about a month before I left for Canada. I probably listened to this album 100 times before I left. It is dripping with the feeling of 1993 and that time in my life. Beyond that, the album is a tight, sonic follow-up to what some thought could never be reproduced in Nirvana's initial venture. Absolutely fantastic. 4.5 stars.
Some will say 5 stars is too high for this album, they can all blow my sax because this is one of the foundational records of modern American music
Interesting album that sounds like the foundation of electronic music
Loved the first song, the rest was ok
Interesting but I am not really a fan
Stevie builds a solid bridge between R&B with this 1972 classic. I think the case could be made that Superstitious launched an entire genre. A strong 4.5 stars 🌟
The birth of the Jam Band
A solid 3.5 stars for this list, Mayfield's smooth falsetto provides an exquisite contrast over the rolling, funky bass lines.
How have I never heard of Wire?!? They are fantastic
One of the first, one of the best
Beautiful, pop album
In the timeless vortex of rock and roll lore, Aerosmith's "Pump" emerges like a leather-clad phoenix rising from the ashes of 80s excess. With a cocktail of gritty guitar riffs and Steven Tyler's unmistakable howl, this album is a sonic time capsule, transporting listeners back to an era when MTV still played music videos and cassette tapes ruled the highways. "Pump" isn't just an album; it's a snapshot of an era where hairspray flowed freely and denim jackets were a requisite fashion statement. From the infectious groove of "Love in an Elevator" to the bluesy swagger of "Janie's Got a Gun," each track is a testament to the band's enduring prowess in blending hard rock with pop sensibilities. Yet, beneath the surface of catchy hooks and anthemic choruses lies a darker undercurrent. Tracks like "Janie's Got a Gun" tackle weighty themes with a deft touch, showcasing Aerosmith's ability to infuse social commentary into their rock anthems. But what truly sets "Pump" apart is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia without feeling dated. Whether you're a die-hard fan reliving the glory days or a newcomer discovering the magic for the first time, there's something undeniably timeless about the raw energy and infectious melodies of Aerosmith's "Pump." It's a reminder that some albums don't just stand the test of time; they define it.
Good for someone, just not me
CCR is, in my opinion, the quintessential American 60's rock band. Bayou Country is probably their lowest rated album but still a raging classic!
I had heard of Roxy Music before but this is the first time really listening to them. Fantastic, artsy album.
For this list, probably a 3.5. Some classic songs but a very dated feel.
Classic weird, need rock
A funky little album
In 1975, David Bowie found himself standing at the intersection of music's past and future, peering into the abyss of Glam Rock's fading allure while simultaneously glimpsing the neon-lit promise of new sonic frontiers. "Young Americans" emerges as a paradoxical testament to Bowie's chameleonic genius, a sonic odyssey that both embraces and eschews the glitter-drenched excesses of its era. With "Young Americans," Bowie deftly navigates the treacherous waters of musical evolution, shedding the sequined skin of Glam Rock to reveal a soulful, funk-infused underbelly pulsating with raw, unfiltered emotion. Tracks like "Fame" and "Young Americans" exude an infectious vitality, capturing the zeitgeist of an era teetering on the brink of cultural upheaval. Yet, beneath the veneer of glossy production and slick hooks lies a profound sense of existential unease, as Bowie grapples with the fleeting nature of fame and the soul-crushing weight of societal expectations. In "Fame," he confronts the Faustian bargain of celebrity with biting wit and incisive insight, while "Somebody Up There Likes Me" offers a haunting meditation on the ephemeral nature of success. As the final notes of "Fame" fade into the ether, Bowie bids adieu to the glittering excesses of Glam Rock, embarking on a daring voyage into uncharted musical territory. With "Young Americans," he leaves an indelible mark on the annals of music history, a testament to his unparalleled ability to transcend genre constraints and redefine the very fabric of popular culture. In the end, Bowie's departure from Glam Rock heralds not just the end of an era, but the dawn of a new musical epoch.
Decent album
Another great find
This album is the King of the 90s Post-grunge era. An absolute classic
Wow! So much better than I anticipated. The early 70s edgy glam rock shone through in this album.
A fine, sleepy-voiced album by Nick Drake
2nd time I have had this one, not an album I have heard often, but a solid off-beqt electronica album
Great cult band that influenced a lot of the 90s bands
Good 70s white guy R&B.
Fine Kinks album
This is some beautiful melodic rock. I can see this as a precursor to bands like Evanescence.
The version on Amazon is no bueno
A little cliché but such great grooves and vocals. Gotta go 4 stars!
Jazz with a world music infusion.
I love this fun, early punk album
Gotta go 4 because of how foundational this album is to rock and roll.
Funky, punky album
I forget how beautiful and serene Eno's music is.
"The Velvet Underground & Nico" is a sonic trip into a dystopian carnival, where pop art and avant-garde collide in a beautiful cacophony. Lou Reed’s deadpan vocals and Nico’s haunting, Teutonic drone are like dueling sirens luring you into the dark underbelly of 1960s counterculture. John Cale's electric viola and the band’s unorthodox instrumentation feel like a séance with the ghosts of rock ‘n’ roll past and future. The album's raw, unapologetic take on taboo subjects—heroin, S&M, and urban ennui—transcends mere shock value, forcing a reevaluation of what rock music could say and do. It's as if Andy Warhol, with his pop-art sensibility, dipped the whole record in a can of Campbell’s soup, only to reveal the simmering angst beneath. This isn’t just an album; it’s a manifesto. It’s the sound of beautiful losers finding salvation in chaos, and it's utterly timeless in its imperfection.
Kind of a campy, country western Byrds album
This album is probably the beginning of mainstream hip-hop. The style is very basic lyrically but it's got a great jam.
***Here is my review of, what I consider to be the best album of all time*** Revolver, the seventh studio album by The Beatles, is not merely an album; it’s a testament to the zenith of the band's creative zenith, or perhaps to the zenith of rock music's zenith. By 1966, The Beatles had already transcended the boundaries of pop stardom, morphing into a cultural phenomenon whose every move was both scrutinized and sanctified. But Revolver wasn't about appeasing the masses or living up to their godlike image. Instead, it was about dismantling the very constructs of what popular music was supposed to be. First, let’s talk about the opening track, “Taxman.” George Harrison’s cynical, sardonic take on the British tax system is not just a protest song; it’s a sonic middle finger aimed at the establishment, laid over a groove so infectious it could almost make you forget you’re being gouged by the government. Harrison steps out of his quiet guitarist persona, showing he’s more than capable of holding his own against Lennon and McCartney’s lyrical prowess. “Eleanor Rigby” is McCartney at his most existential. In two minutes, McCartney encapsulates the bleak, anonymous existence that modernity can impose. It’s not just a song about loneliness; it’s an exploration of the human condition, backed by a string quartet that strips away any hint of rock pretension. It’s classical, but it's also deeply contemporary, making you question the purpose of all those forgotten lives. Lennon’s contributions, however, are where Revolver truly deviates from their earlier work. “Tomorrow Never Knows” is the sonic equivalent of a psychedelic experience, predating the summer of love and acid trips becoming cultural mainstays. Lennon’s voice, distorted through a Leslie speaker, intones lyrics inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead. It's not just avant-garde; it’s a prelude to the entire genre of electronic music. Listening to it is like stepping into a kaleidoscope, every sound spiraling into infinity, yet grounded by Ringo’s relentless, primal drumming. Then there’s “Here, There and Everywhere,” perhaps McCartney’s most beautiful love song, a track that manages to be both heart-wrenching and euphoric. It’s a moment of pure, unadulterated emotion in an album that often feels like it’s reaching for something far beyond the grasp of mere mortals. What makes Revolver unparalleled is its seamless integration of disparate styles and influences. It’s a melting pot of Western and Eastern, of classical and futuristic, of the mundane and the metaphysical. Harrison’s “Love You To” introduces the sitar in a way that isn’t cultural appropriation, but rather a genuine exploration of global sounds. It’s a track that transcends rock, borrowing from Indian classical music and infusing it with the ethos of the 60s counterculture. The beauty of Revolver is that it’s both a product of its time and timeless. It's an album born out of the chaos and innovation of the 60s, yet it doesn’t feel dated. It’s experimental without being inaccessible, philosophical without being pretentious. It's The Beatles at their most fearless, unshackled by commercial expectations or genre limitations. In the grand scheme of rock history, Revolver is less an album and more a manifesto—a declaration that music could be art, that pop could be profound, and that a band from Liverpool could alter the course of culture forever. Listening to it today, it’s easy to see why it’s often hailed as the greatest album of all time. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s perfectly imperfect. It’s a snapshot of a band, and a world, in the midst of seismic change, captured with all the raw, messy, beautiful energy that entails.
I love this early Beck sound
This album is definitely not my jam
I think this is one of the perfect albums of the early 2000s. Adele's voice is melodic, serene and at times, bluesy. The depth of feeling in this album is the benchmark for the decade.
Classic shoegaze
That...was...interesting
A great follow-up to Elephant, a little more distorted and blusey
This might be the best grunge album of all time. I know Nirvana apologists will kill me for that but I stand by it.
Mmehh...I thought it would be better.
Tom Waits is a vibe
No on Amazon Music 😕
This might be the only true (definitely the 1st) punk rock rap album. The Beastie contributed to rap what it is today.
Fun summer songs
Another one that is better than expected
I'm gonna go buy a yacht now
Not really impressed
This is probably by 4th favorite TP album, but it is a great one.
Honestly it was just ok.
I consider this one of the few rock classics of the 80s
Wow, this was better than I remember.
A couple of great tunes that are foundational to ska.
Fun rock album
Spurred a deep dive into the Bee Gees, and frankly, I wasn't too impressed.
While I don't love this genre, I did think there were more hits than misses on this record. This album has the quintessential 80s instrumental as well.
Probably a 3.5 star album for this list. They sounded like a muddy version of Oasis. 3 or 4 good songs though.
Neil Young's *After the Gold Rush* feels like the soundtrack to a melancholy daydream—vivid, strange, and existentially unsettling. It's the kind of record that unpacks your nostalgia in real-time. "Tell Me Why" is deceptively optimistic, like a cigarette disguised as meditation. Then, there’s the title track, which feels like you’re reading sci-fi poetry from an old hippie’s diary. Young’s voice isn’t for everyone, but it doesn’t matter—it’s exactly what you’d want on a hazy afternoon, when you're thinking about the end of the world while making coffee. It’s flawed, brilliant, and oddly prophetic.
He has a rich, mesmerizing voice
A great album but it has that definite transition from 60s - 70s/80s feel. Still some great songs.
Don't like Birt Synth-Pop
I give them credit for being pioneers but nothing too catchy for a punk album.
One of the best albums of the 20 teens. This record has a lot going on.
Love this classic album
I will give it a 4th star because it was so incredibly innovative.
An amazing set of collabs as the swan song for one of the fathers of the Chicago blues.
This really is a late 90s masterpiece
I think this album is thr bridge from 70s disco to 80s pop. An absolute classic
Wow! Loved this album. Stevie Wonder is a legend
Interesting background type music
