Older is the third studio album and major-label debut by American singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine, released on April 5, 2024, by RCA Records. It serves as the follow-up to her previous album, Five Seconds Flat (2022). McAlpine wrote and produced Older in Los Angeles with Mason Stoops, Ryan Lerman, Jeremy Most, Tony Berg, Taylor Mackall, and Ethan Gruska.
The album centers on relationships, heartbreak, and self-acceptance. Older is primarily an Indie folk and chamber pop record, with elements of baroque pop. The album was preceded by the release of two singles: the title track on February 13, and "I Guess" on March 13; the former was promoted with a televised appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In support of Older, the singer embarked on the Older Tour in 2024, visiting North America and Europe.
Upon release, Older was met with positive reviews from music critics, with praise towards McAlpine's greater maturity and artistic growth. It debuted and peaked at number 93 on the US Billboard 200, while also charting moderately on the main charts in Australia, Flanders, Ireland, and New Zealand. A deluxe edition of the album, titled Older (and Wiser), was released on October 4, 2024.
Older is an indie/chamber pop album by Lizzy McAlpine. I can hear a lot of quality in the compositions, but several slower tracks on the album bore me to death. These are just generic and uninteresting. The more uptempo tracks are of better quality and overall the lyrics too. I guess it deserves a 3.5 stars rating in total (but barely).
Really great voice. I’m not a teenage girl, so not her typical audience. Every song is about a toxic relationship and sad. Kind of dig her sound but don’t relate to the lyrics at all.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that a lot of YouTube stars become pop artists I’ve never heard of… with the way music now has more paths to an audience. This is a nice album, if a little underwhelming for me. I’ve already filled this section of my library with artists I like better, but I can appreciate that new artists need to come along for future listeners to discover. Just not going to be something I’m going to get really into.
Good, if a little persistently morose in tone. The kind of conversational lyrical style (conversational isn't quite the word but I didn't come up with a better one) doesn't always land. Overall promising but with some room to grow.
McAlpine may have vocal chops, but her focus is lacking. This LP wanders through so many genres and throws so many things at the wall that I’m left to consider what the point was. Couple that with uninspired songwriting and somewhat banal instrumentals and this album left me wanting.
This is the sound of modern female led indie pop. Soft quiet vocals over acoustic guitars with lyrics that are depressing or shocking for a woman to say. I actually thought that type of music was pretty solid when I first heard it in the mid 10s with soccer mommy and phoebe bridgers. Now almost a decade later the popular sound has become over ridden with less talented sound like McAlpine. I’m not saying this is bad it’s just not original by now and was pretty dull. Many songs get like they were muffled together lacking their own originality. There were a couple good songs but it wasn’t enough to prop this album up. 4.9/10
