Album Summary
Thriller is the sixth studio album by American singer and songwriter Michael Jackson, released on November 30, 1982, by Epic Records. It was produced by Quincy Jones, who had previously worked with Jackson on his 1979 album Off the Wall. Jackson wanted to create an album where "every song was a killer". With the ongoing backlash against disco music at the time, he moved in a new musical direction, resulting in a mix of pop, post-disco, rock, funk, and R&B sounds. Thriller foreshadows the contradictory themes of Jackson's personal life, as he began using a motif of paranoia and darker themes. The album features a single guest appearance, with Paul McCartney becoming the first artist to be credited as a featured artist on one of Jackson's albums. Recording took place from April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, with a production budget of $750,000. Thriller became Jackson's first number one album on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart, where it spent a record 37 non-consecutive weeks at number one, from February 26, 1983, to April 14, 1984. Seven singles were released: "The Girl Is Mine", "Billie Jean", "Beat It", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' ", "Human Nature", "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)", and "Thriller". They all reached the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, setting the record at the time for the most top 10 singles from an album, with "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" reaching number one. Following Jackson's performance of "Billie Jean" in the Motown 25 television special, where he debuted his signature moonwalk dance, the sales of the album significantly increased, selling one million copies worldwide per week. The "Thriller" music video was premiered to great anticipation in December 1983 and played regularly on MTV, which also increased the sales of the album. With 32 million copies sold worldwide by the end of 1983, Thriller became the best-selling album of all time. It was the best-selling album of 1983 worldwide, and it was the first album to become the best-selling in the United States for two years, in 1983 and 1984. It set the standard for the music industry with its songs, music videos, and promotion strategies influencing artists, record labels, producers, marketers, and choreographers. Jackson's success and immediate influence led to him having a standing of cultural significance that was not attained by a Black American before him in the history of the entertainment industry, with the album's unprecedented popularity breaking racial barriers in popular music, having enabled Jackson's regular appearances on MTV and meeting with US President Ronald Reagan at the White House. Thriller was among the first albums to use music videos as promotional tools; the videos for "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Thriller" are credited for transforming music videos into a serious art form. Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time, with sales of 70 million copies worldwide. It is the second-best-selling album in the United States and was certified 34× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2021. It won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards at the 1984 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, while "Beat It" won Record of the Year. Jackson also won a record-breaking eight American Music Awards at the 1984 American Music Awards. The album has been a frequent inclusion in lists of the greatest albums of all time. In 2008, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In the same year, the Library of Congress chose to preserve it to the National Recording Registry of "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant recordings".

yep Micheal Jackson, good but not interesting
Michael Jackson is, admittedly, iconic, especially when this album is involved. This is the third majorly popular/acclaimed album I've gotten in a row, so I'm trying to analyze the music itself without letting the sensationalism get in the way. I don't typically like 80s pop albums, but this was a lot better than the usual overly synth-y, drum machine selections. The hits (of course I've heard those already; when I was in chorus back in school one of our shows was Thriller-themed), are catchy and 5/5 (especially "Beat It" and my personal favorite "Billie Jean"). "Beat It" incorporates rock elements and "Billie Jean" brings in a darker, more mysterious sound. There are some ballads that I didn't think were as good but still not bad, and a light-hearted cameo by Paul McCartney in "The Girl Is Mine". Overall, this was a decent album (coming from someone who doesn't usually listen to a lot of pop regularly).
Just a top quality pop album spanning moods, genres and styles in just 9 songs. And Beat It is truly hard to beat.
5/5 Probably the greatest and most popular MJ album
Maybe the goat
Masterpiece 5/5
4 stelle abbondanti + feat con Paul McCartney= 5 stelle
Just listened to this!! Thriller, beat it, Billie Jean might be best 3 song run all time
En tiedä mitä muuta tälle albumille antaa. Jokainen biisi yksilönä ja yhdessä hyvä. Paitsi ehkä Baby be mine, joka on kuitenkin vähintään kolme tähtee.
Upeet saundit! Bängereitä biisejä ja tosi vahva ja tasainen albumikokonaisuus! The Girl Is Mine on mun lemppariduettoja vaikka rakentuukin vähän tunkkaisen ajatuksen ja kukkoilun ympärille 😅 Quincy Jones on tehnyt taikojaan ja MJ ääni ja tulkinta on kyl upee 💖 Vähän haparoin hetken pisteiden kanssa, mut god damn kun on kovii biisejä täynnä!
Olihan se hyvä, kovia hittejä ja muutenkin! Vähän vaivaannuttava oli se Paul McCartney -duetto, muuten todella kova, mut silti en osaa tästä vitosta jotenkin antaa.
There's no need to write anything.
Quincyyy. Human Nature is a new favorite track.
Is this the first album produced intentionally S a “something for everybody” multi genre experience ?
I’ve heard a couple of songs from this before but never listened to the whole album. Holy crap this was great. How many bangers can you fit on an album? Definitely an album I’ll be going back to. Top Track - Beat It
Starting with thriller!? I dont think i need to write anything about this album history wrote itself.
Such a thrill
Those three songs in the middle with Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean really elevates this album to something really quite special. However that duet with Paul McCartney, That Girl Is Mine, is pretty awful. And it's kind of hard to listen to Pretty Young Things, knowing what we do know about Michael's proclivities.
This album really feels like a clear dividing line between early "black" MJ and later "white" MJ. The funk is still there, with some of the best basslines in his music. But some of the filler songs are already showing that cheesy, poppy side of him that I really dislike. It get a 4 because of that 3-song run in the middle, but some of the other songs are quite horrible.
He made Thriller, man, Thriller.
Is this good? Sure. Is this very good? Yep. Is this great? Not sure (even if it contains some great songs). It contains some absolute classics, but I also think some songs are not really special: "Baby Be Mine", "The Girl Is Mine", "The Lady In My Life", or "P.Y.T" (don't like those effects at the end of the song). Of course, it also contains some great tracks, the big three: " Thriller", "Beat It" (probably my favourite), and "Billie Jean" (a very close second place for me). I also think "Human Nature" is very good. So, this is obviously at least 4 stars (and clearly in the 4,5 range). However, I'm not sure it reaches 5 star for me. It probably does due to its clearly unique sound, but I'm still not fully convinced.
It's hard to bag too hard on Thriller. It is chock full of classic MJ songs that have remained popular over 40+ years. I'm not the biggest Michael Jackson fan, but it's hard to argue that he hasn't remained an icon in pop music. But I also would say that if a Michael Jackson song isn't a smash hit, it's a complete and total dud. There is not really any "in-between" with this guy. This record is a classic, but one third of it straight up sucks. "Baby Be Mine" is filler, "The Girl is Mine" is just so laughably dumb, and "The Lady in My Life" is saccharin slop. Every other track is great, but those three songs are so bad that I can't in good conscience rate this almost universally loved record a 5. 8/10
The singles here are crazy. Thriller and Beat It are just incredible, and Wanna Be Starting Something is by far my favorite Michael Jackson song. PYT, Human Nature and Billie Jean also really good. BUT there are some low points on the album - The Girl Is Mine being the lowest of the low. One of the worst songs I've ever heard. Still, the album is definitely deserving of its acclaim and its staggering sales.
Can never go wrong with one of the most famous albums of all time. Despite the hits, this is a romantic album with songs that go into R&B territory and it feels personal and so good. I feel like it didn't have a great direction with the variety of songs and styles, but nevertheless, incredible musicianship.
Thriller - Beat It - Billie Jean has to be one of the greatest 3 track runs on any album. A pity that The Girl Is Mine and the pretty boring closing track The Lady In My Life hold it back from 5 stars.
Thriller's reputation more than precedes it, and for good reason; Thriller (the song) may well be one of the greatest pop songs ever released. Whilst at times the album can feel a little bit too saccharine, it's still one of the most infectious pop albums you'll ever listen to.
A truly flawed genius. Or a flawed true genius. Massive album.
one of those great moments where you find yourself going "oh this one!" quite a few times.
This is actually great, there are filler tracks but the run of 'Thriller', 'Beat It', and 'Billie Jean' is fantastic. Definitely a nonce though
Michael Jackson’s 1979 album, Off The Wall, was his first not released by Motown—who had been famously controlling of his artistic output. Despite the fact that he had been famous for years, it was, in many ways, his debut. And it was a successful one, too, yielding four top-ten hits Yet, at the 22nd Grammy Awards, it was shut out of all major categories. It was completely passed over for Album of the Year, and only won a single, measly award: Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male. Michael Jackson did not want to be an R&B star. He wanted to be a pop star—the biggest one in the world, at that. But he felt as if the white audiences and critics and award ceremony jurors would always box him into that category, pushing him away from a complete mainstream takeover, relegating him to those small awards nobody cared about. And the only way to stop this? Create an album so infectious—so perfect in its pop appeal—that nobody could deny him anything. And how’d he start that? A single with Paul McCartney, of course. A teaser for white audiences, seeing MJ sing with this well-respected, well-established white Brit. It’s an awkward cut, as 40 year-old McCartney and 25 year-old MJ are fighting over the same girl and don’t seem to have a lot of chemistry, but it worked well enough; Jackson’s foot was in the door. What followed was perfection. The hooks had hooks. The deep cuts would have been the most popular song of any other artist. There is not a single wasted note—not a single flaw in the utter commercial sheen of it all. Michael Jackson had not only won, but he had shaped the rest of the culture in his image. The music video—the male pop star—the Black pop star—all thanks to him. Thriller won seven Grammys and went on to become the best-selling record of all time. It is very likely nothing will ever beat its sales. When will we, a fragmented culture under social media, ever collectively have such a singular event ever again? Looking back, you see MJ as an old emperor, presiding over his throne with such power that all you can do is hope to emulate it.
Thriller
No introduction needed here. Of course, this was a global smash hit and went no 1 everywhere, and stayed at the top of the charts for weeks, if not years. Having said that, it doesn't quite hold up to that level of scrutiny after all these years. The Rob Temperton songs (Baby Be Mine and Lady In My Life) are notably weaker than the other compositions here, and the duet with McCartney is cringe-worthy. But still, you've got Wanna Be Startin' Something (I'll admit, I forgot that was on this album and it sounds like it should have been on Off The Wall - not a criticism), Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean, all of which still sound great. Is it still a great album with some amazingly well-known tracks? Yes. Is it still a five-star album to my ears in 2026? Not quite. 4 stars.
Listened before? Yes Thoughts: - I don't really think I'm a Michael Jackson "fan," but there's no denying this is a great album. (I appreciate the reminder to listen to the title track during spooky season, too.) - I don't think it's flawless though - "The Girl is Mine" is incredibly lame to me. I can't get past the unironic use of the word "doggone." 😂 That had to be weird even in 1982 right? - The 2 non-singles are fine I guess, but that still leaves 6 massive hits, so I can't give it less than 4 stars. Favorite track(s): Billie Jean, Thriller Least favorite: The Girl is Mine
Probably the easiest 5 on the entire list. 9 song album with arguably the best 5 song run in music
10 / 10
How can one album have so many bangers? The only song that detracts from the whole experience is the Paul McCartney one.
Yes
The world would prob make more sense if I liked Michael Jackson. But alas 4 is the most I can give for this objectively good album I don't fully appreciate.
yeah this was a good one, i was dancing and singing.
Thriller is definitely one of those albums where, if you had a gun to your head and really had to condense this project list down to a tera-tight ten, Thriller would still handily make the cut. Even the philistine troglodytes who have been living under rocks know this entire tracklist. It's the best-selling album of all time (will probably be forever), and it's earned a place on the pedestal of pop that even regicidal pedophilia accusations couldn't topple. Make no mistake - the King of Pop will still be drawing the youth out of their seats in a hundred years' time. The album is at its weakest when Michael forgoes the more bombastic pop spectacularity for these slow RnB ballads - otherwise excellent works that suffer from being sandwiched inbetween the finest that dancefloor pop has to offer. But really, nobody needs a review for Thriller - its reputation kind of speaks for itself and everybody's already heard it anyway. Fav tracks: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean
Incredible storytelling. Pop DNA embedded in every track. Some parts tender other parts invigorating. Favorite track - The Girl Is Mine, Beat It and Billie Jean
Michael Jackson ruled the world at this time, and everyone had this album, including me. Beat It (love Eddie Van Halen's guitar) and Billie Jean are among the biggest pop hits of all time, and the title track started a craze with its video. For me, Human Nature brought back memories of the early days of high school.
i hate michael
De los mejores de MJ.
Non stop greatness.
No doubt this has the hits. Paul McCartney should just kiss about it in that song tho
🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺
I'm not a big pop fan. That said, the title track is undeniable (mmm Vincent Price). "Beat It" is a banger. "Wanna be Startin' Somethin'" has some interesting textures. "The Girl is Mine" is terrible. Awful, just awful. Honestly, nothing outside of the singles is really that interesting or good. And I question my response to the singles - is this just familiarity? I get that this album is legendary but maybe you just had to be there. Or be into cheesy (and occasionally borderline creepy) love songs. Yes, MJ is a talented vocalist. And?
Concept of Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson fighting over the same girl is very funny
4.5/5 classic bangers!
*all-time.
I’ll never forget the wailing at 2am from my roommate back in June 2009. I was living in Thornton Heath at the time in a big share house, chilling with Thomas down in the kitchen, when Anita let out a sudden scream as though she was witnessing bloody murder, then ran downstairs in tears, yelling “MICHAEL JACKSON DIED! MICHAEL JACKSON DIED!” repeatedly. It’s forever etched in my memory. Anyway that had nothing to do with Thriller. Musically speaking it’s not really my thing but I can appreciate his talent as an artist and the global fascination with him. Dude certainly turned out to be a creep though. I reckon he would have ended up with a fate akin to Rolf Harris, imprisoned and disgraced, were it not for his untimely death.
I’m not a MJ fan but you have to agree this is a classic.
Honestly listening to this again was a bit underwhelming. I love Billy Jean and Beat It, like Wanna Be Startin… and Thriller, but the rest is not that strong for me. Also I just can’t stand his voice when he sings ballads. It’s nails on a chalkboard for me and I can’t help it. I get why this sold a shit load, as you can put it on and just let it entertain you, but it’s not really my favourite MJ album. Oh, and the guy was a nonce but I try not to drop stars just because someone is an awful human
The better songs make up for the lesser songs to make this album the pinnacle of His career. That being said, his pop dance music is better than his slower r&b style stuff.
I have a history with this album. When it came out I was a punk, alt-rock, Brit pop fan and was loath to cross the line into American pop, especially such over the top hyped up stuff like Michael Jackson. B u t ... at first a few of the songs were... catchy, even kind of good. Then the album overall came sort of to be "interesting." and within a short period of time I realized the brilliance of it. So for a long time now I have thought of this album as canon. Listening now, all these years later only solidifies my early changed thinking, and this IS one of the best albums out there and has not aged to speak of. If one is curious about the phenomenon of Michael Jackson, just listen to this album. That will do it.
I am not now, nor have I ever been, a Jacko fan. But I can fully understand why this album recieved the plaudits it did. Its put together quite well, the are performed well, and are catchy, and its not unpleasant to listen to. I'm going to go out on a limb and give it a 4.
6 decent tracks, mostly iconic. 3 horrendous tracks, all the slower ones (Human Nature, Lady in My Life and the cringetastic duet with Paul McCartney). How do I rate one of the undoubtedly most universally popular and influential albums of all time? A 4. I hate the ones mentioned so much, and 6 bangers don’t maketh an album.
Michael Jackson became a cultural icon after releasing this mega album. There was no escaping it as the time. The singles kept being released many months after its initial release. It won more awards than you can shake a spotty stick at. He reshaped how the music video could be used in promotion of music. This became the world's biggest selling album in the world (only the second biggest in the US, what does that tell you about America? (That question could open a large can of worms, let's leave it as rhetorical). Yes this album is a monster, a thriller, post disco (is that a thing?) classic. Everyone loves it, everyone loved him. Well nearly everyone. I remember going 'thats Vincent Price!' When I first saw that video on TOTP, then I got annoyed as the sound of their dancing feet were audible over the soundtrack. That really effected me. I hate that. There was no need for such distracting sounds at all. This is the first time I have listened to this in its entirety. I had to remove all my built up unconscious (and deliberate conscious) bias to get through this. A time before Earth Song and Jordy Chandler and those spots.... It was a challenge to get myself into this zone, but I managed it. The end result was that i found this album enjoyable to listen to, up until that weird duo with Macca, where they sounded like they were going to have a bit of a rough and tumble over the love of some unfortunate (I live in hope) lady. Then we are into big gun territory, and I soon recovered my composure when the non shoe noise version of Thriller came on. Vincent Price still steals that show. I did have a big shock when 'Human Nature' came on, as I never knew this was on this album. Sadly it seems MJ ran out of steam by the last two songs as they were instantly forgettable. What on earth should I give this epic record? One created by a man who I came to detest? Its got to be a 5.
Nothing to see here. Just the best selling album of all time by the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. One banger after another.
It’s pretty cringe in places but I guess it’s still quite good.
Talk about separating the art from the artist! What a great record. To quote Kendrick Lamar, Michael "gave us 'Billie Jean,' you say he touched those kids?" I do believe the accusers, to be clear. But does Jackson deserve sympathy for how his upbringing formed him into the broken human that committed those heinous acts? Is this the correct forum to pontificate on this? Imagine that it was the right place to talk about it, then what?
best - beat it worst - baby be mine
Some absolute classics on here
Took me awhile to get into it
8/10
2,5
The middle of the album has one of the greatest runs ever but it's very inconsistent on the edges
Süß
Great 80's post-disco funk R&B pop album. This album is just hit after hit, with 7 out of nine songs being top 10 hit singles. It is a much darker album for MJ, I guess he was aiming to change up his image with this album. There are a couple songs that I just don't like which keep this from being 5 stars for me, but overall a killer set.
I think Human Nature is one of my favorite MJ songs ever and is severely underrated so I'm going to give the whole album 5 stars for that alone. Otherwise I love the randomness of Thriller in the middle. Yeah normal Pop RnB and then WHAM Halloween song. No one's doing it like this anymore.
Hard to deny the most iconic album of all time
Begrudgingly 4
Probably one of the best pop albums of all time. Insane lineup of songs that still hold up today.
Mweh. Als afsluiter heeft het The Lady in My Life.
I don't have anything to add to the discourse about Thriller. The music is great, the videos were groundbreaking, the album art is iconic. It catapulted MJ into mythical status as the world's biggest pop star, perhaps the biggest pop culture icon since the Beatles, and he's probably unsurpassed since.
Natomiast The Girls is Mine w duecie z Paulem McCartneyem kompletnie mi nie siedzi, Human Nature nie wywołuje u mnie emocji ni dobrej, ni złej, a P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) ratuję bardzo rytmiczy podkład, który wywołuje u mnie rytmiczne potrząsanie głową.
The best-selling album of all time probably deserves five stars but the McCartney duet is SO LAME.
An amazing album by a one of a kind artist. I knew almost the whole album before going into it because my parents were big Michael Jackson fans. It has some of his biggest hits that are timeless. I remember watching the Thriller music video countless times growing up. It’s Michael at his most iconic, the album artwork is iconic, the production is iconic, I mean it deserves 5 stars cause it’s Thriller.
Think back on all the brit-pop you've heard so far on this journey. This album's existence in 1982 is a monumental breath of fresh air.
An absolute masterpiece. 5 stars. Duh
7/10
Such a great album!
He is the king. I don't think I've listened to the whole thing front to back before. If you hate on this, do you like music?
All timer - absolute classic.
5/5
As much as I hate Micheal Jackson as a person this is not a bad album, I struggled to separate the music from the artist. Initially I knew obviously his hits of the album but never listened to it. Take the first song “wanna be starting something” whilst catchy is far too long for my liking, also wtf with “You’re a vegetable” as a lyric. However I mean when he starts going a bit funky in “baby be mine” I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Also wasn’t expecting to hear Paul McCartney on here, bit random but didn’t mind it. In terms of how the album flows this is definitely one of the least cohesive, which is a something i values so I found it quite disappointing no matter how good some of the songs are. Overall the songs are relatively solid some definitely more than others ( I mean it’s the music video that makes thriller) , but I think it listens better if each the songs were singles. Not terrible for a nonce. If I could I would rank as 2.5 out of 5.
10/10 album. Iconic for a reason
There are a load of great albums that have been recorded, few of them change the world. Thriller was a water shed album in pop culture. I visited my 20 year old son’s Frat house at University and the first album above the record player in a stack of records was Thriller. 44 years later and its significance as an artistic contribution endures.
