1001 Albums Summary

So, so lovely.

I Got the Beat and especially Our Lips Are Sealed are so, so good. The rest of the album is good enough, but just didn’t grab me like those two tracks.

Where Is My Mind seems like it comes from an entirely different album. Not necessarily a different band, but a band that has gone through big changes and sounds nothing like their old selves. I think it might be because I came late to the party, and spent so much time listening to Pixies descendants (Nirvana), but the rest of the album didn’t hugely grab me. Gigantic was pretty cool.

I only know The Beach Boys from their very best, which is transcendently good. Combined with my previous 1001 albums pick being The Who’s “Who’s Next”, also released in 1971, the album suffered greatly in comparison and my main impression was “corny”. Still had some nice harmonies, though.

The first band in the project that I had absolutely never heard of, and, damn, these ladies rock!

Solid. Favorite song: In the Mood For Love with Bonnie Raitt

Loved it. Listened to it all weekend, and then went for Iggy’s other solo stuff, too.

Eh, I guess Morrissey just isn’t my bag.

I thought Bohemian Rhapsody would be the oddest thing on here, but this is odd all the way through. Loved it!

Meh. Nothing grabbed me. My kid said VM sings like he’s missing five teeth.

Even I’ll admit the Beatles were pretty good.

Growly, blues mess. Couldn’t understand a word. Loved it.

Only as funky as your last cut.

Moody, unique, and out-of-time.

Deeply silly. “Genius of Love” is a banger.

Grooving, vibing.

Smooth, but maybe just not for me.

I feel like In Rainbows gets overshadowed in the critical consensus by several other Radiohead albums, but it’s definitely my favorite. One of my top 10 albums.

Sarah Vaughn is so damn cool on this album. Listen to it 70 years after the recording and you’ll get 1% cooler just through osmosis. It’s great.

The most not-for-me thing I’ve heard on 1,001 so far. Hated it.

I like it more than I thought, but I was coming in with very low expectations. Psychoanalyzing pop culture figures is dicey, but mostly what I heard was an untreated bipolar manic episode.

Favorites: Criminal, Shadowboxer, Sleep to Dream

Moody. I liked it well enough, but I don’t think it’s one I’ll revisit.

I’m not old enough to have been there at the time. Any time I hear Bob Dylan, the music seems good, but then he sings and it sounds like a bit, like a Saturday Night Live skit, and I just can’t take it seriously.

I just listened to this album in my driveway in Florida’s mid-day August heat while plugging a hole in my flat tire. If that’s not the perfect context to enjoy this, then I don’t know what perfection is. Five stars.

I like the music better, but it’s still Dylan singing. Ugh.

Le Freak is still a banger. The rest is ok, but doesn’t grab me like that.

Earnest and well-made. I didn’t feel like I was really connecting to it, but it did put me in a state of melancholic reflection, so that’s something.

On the strength of Immigrant Song, I think. Goddamn, I love that song.

“Artificial” seems like a weird criticism for an electronic album, but this whole thing just felt too glossy for its own good.

Pleasant enough, but nothing that really left an impression on me.

As I was listening, I felt like I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it. Eventually, that lack of reaction kind of made me hate it, though.

Earlier in the project, Astral Weeks from 1968 grated on me, but 1970’s Moondance had me grooving’ along. Did VM change in two years, or did I change in two months?
