Van Morrison · 1 likes
3/5
Can't fault it for variety. There's a bit of everything on here. Listening to the first song I thought fuck me, I had no idea Van Morrison made country music. Other than that song, apparently he didn't.
Overall, didn't love or hate it. Couple of songs were pretty decent.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy · 1 likes

Not on Spotify, can't be fucked searching for it. Where has the did not listen option gone?

Al Green
4/5
Really nice this. Just lacking one or two more bangers. Sure I already reviewed this.
Elliott Smith
2/5
Meh
OutKast
2/5
Some reasonable tracks, but this just isn't for me.
David Bowie
4/5
Good solid Bowie stuff. Lacking a few more hits but some sleepers on there.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
Close to a 4, but the last song and the Dylan pisstake mark it down. 3.5.
Nirvana
3/5
A collection of hits to start the album before meandering into mediocrity.
The Flying Burrito Brothers
2/5
Weird country rock stuff. No thanks
Daft Punk
2/5
Listenable in the gym but wouldn't listen to it in any other context. Probably a 2.5.
Ute Lemper
3/5
Surprised that I quite enjoyed this. Quite a bit of variety on there. The last song really dragged though.
Ella Fitzgerald
3/5
Very pleasant listen. Good voice, nice music, but a bit backgroundy. Over 3 hours is taking the piss. 3.5 would've fair as there are contexts in which I'd listen to this again.
The National
2/5
Very meh. Vocals too low/mumbled to make out the lyrics.
The Who
4/5
Good stuff. Was going to go 3.5, but a strong finish to the album. Behind Blue Eyes is a great song and a nice change of pace.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Was OK, expected a bit more.
Derek & The Dominos
2/5
Congratulations Eric, you can play the guitar.
Janis Joplin
3/5
It's ok, voice is a bit too gravely for me. Preferred the album with the band I got last week.
Scott Walker
3/5
Strange album this. Lyrics seem totally out of place for the style of music. But I quite enjoyed it. Not sure if 2.5 or 3?
Paul Simon
4/5
Good stuff. Few tracks miss the mark, but overall it's pretty solid.
Soft Machine
1/5
Managed 2 tracks. As obvious a 1 star as you're likely to get.
Kendrick Lamar
1/5
Fuck off.
The Stooges
4/5
Pretty good pre-punk kinda sound. Borderline 3.5/4.
Solange
1/5
What the duck is this shite.
Black Sabbath
4/5
Much better album than Self Titled. A bit of guitar wankery, but some interesting stuff going on musically.
Steve Earle
3/5
Better than I would have expected.
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
The Flaming Lips
3/5
Wasn't bad. But of variety on there, but also a bit of inconsistency as well.
Bert Jansch
3/5
Decent this. Bit too one paced to be anything above a 3 though.
4/5
The first beneficiary on the rounding up system. Musically very good. Lyrically a bit all over the place, and I'm not a big fan of Ray Davies' patriotism/nationalism.
The Police
1/5
Fuck off Sting.
Sonic Youth
3/5
Basically the same as Harness. It's close to be something I would like, without being something I like. A generous 3.
Killing Joke
3/5
There are a few songs that I'd give a 4, but not enough of them.
Ray Charles
3/5
The second half of the album was pretty good. The first was just jazzy high notes on repeat. Pretty annoying.
Motörhead
4/5
Listened to - whilst trying to feel up the Mrs on the back in of a plane, drunk at 10am.
Sound - Ideal for a live album. Good energy, quite short, and no guff between songs that you often get on live albums. Live albums are cheating a bit, as they should basically be a greatest hits up to that point, but loads of bands sounds shite on live albums.
Motorhead are metal for punks. Short, sharp, songs, with guitar wankery, generally, capped at about 10 seconds.
Relisten - Very likely.
The Pharcyde
3/5
Listened to - on the plane.
Sound - Musically it's pretty interesting. Which is more than you can say for most hip-hop/rap. Lyrically it's all over the place.
Radiohead
4/5
Listened to - at the airport waiting to board.
Sound - about what I expected it's borderline 3/4. Going with a 4, because I think it'd be better on second listen, but it's definitely a beneficiary of the grading up system.
Miles Davis
2/5
It's not musically unpleasant, but it sounds pretty thin. A lack of lyrics is going to be a big issue for me too.
The Vines
3/5
It's alright. Nothing special. A 5/10.
Arctic Monkeys
4/5
Pretty good listen this. Some of the lyrics feel a bit dated, or maybe it's just that I'm old. Some of the songs sound a little too similar too, but overall enjoyable.
AC/DC
3/5
It's OK.
Bonnie Raitt
2/5
Speaking of dated.
Def Leppard
2/5
I dunno, 2? 3? Didn't enjoy it, but it isn't complete shit.
Johnny Cash
3/5
Should have stick to the shorter version. Half this thing wasn't even Johnny Cash.
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
Gone with a 4, felt the album finished fairly strongly. It's a 7/0 for me though.
3/5
It's OK.
Peter Gabriel
2/5
Shite.
Ray Charles
3/5
Did exactly the same as Harness.
The Yardbirds
3/5
Seemed OK, if unspectacular.
Blondie
5/5
First 5. About half of the songs on this I really like. The rest range from OK to good. Nothing I'd immediately want to skip.
Beatles
4/5
It's really good, but few too many songs miss the mark for a 5.
Barry Adamson
1/5
A collection of sound effects.
De La Soul
4/5
Fun album. I've given 3s to better stuff, but such is my new grading system.
The The
3/5
It was OK.
Cream
3/5
Better than I expected, but won't listen again.
David Bowie
4/5
Not his best work, but a decent album.
Dusty Springfield
4/5
Pretty good.
Blur
3/5
There's a lot more variety here than I was expecting. Didn't like most of it though.
AC/DC
3/5
Harness is right. It all sounds the same.
The Doors
3/5
Parliament
3/5
It's ok. Good for what it is I suppose.
Christina Aguilera
4/5
Listened to Billy Bragg's Back to Basics instead. Banger.
Randy Newman
3/5
Quite an interesting start to the album. Glad I listened to it with headphones. No way that song gets made today, even though the message seems to be anti-racist.
Overall it was OK. Not something I'd necessarily go looking for, but wouldn't turn off (Rednecks - if in company aside).
Tracy Chapman
4/5
My first girlfriend was really into this album. Not listened to it in 20 years. Like it more now than I did then.
Beatles
3/5
On pure enjoyability, it's probably a low 4, but the best songs on the album aren't Beatles songs, and they're generally worse than the original.
Ramones
3/5
Worse than I remember. Can barely hear the guitar om half the songs.
The Kinks
3/5
Same same. Nice music, not massively keen on the lyrics/theme.
Lana Del Rey
2/5
Pleasant enough in the right context I suppose, but very samey, and the gym was not the right context.
Common
3/5
It's ok for what it is. 3 feels quite generous though.
John Lennon
3/5
It's not terrible, not great. Expected a little better tbh.
Neil Young
3/5
This is probably a 4 after furthing listenings, but it's a 3 after 1 listen. Probably will listen again and enjoy it more.
Beastie Boys
3/5
The album picked up a bit, but a lot of it is very formulaic. Low 3.
Eminem
2/5
Some nostalgia here. Probably not listened to it since I was about 14. The lyrics are all over the fucking place. Almost every song is about him taking crack or smack, until the song where he says he's doesn't so smack or crack. Before rapping about shooting up in the very next song.
Mercury Rev
3/5
It's ok.
The Smashing Pumpkins
2/5
Way too angsty. The lyrics are pure aimed at teenage boys. Which is a bit gay.
Nick Drake
3/5
It's pleasant and boring in equal measures. Probably enjoy an individual song, but an album of it is way too much.
David Bowie
4/5
Good solid Bowie stuff this.
Sebadoh
3/5
It's OK. Not enough variety though.
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Quality from start to finish.
Blur
4/5
Low 4.
Pearl Jam
3/5
The whole album felt like it was building to something that never arrived.
Lorde
3/5
It's just about a 3. Might be getting the benefit of the doubt for just being as shit as expected. It's all a bit bland though.
The Young Gods
1/5
Black Sabbath
4/5
Had this album on my individual one before I packed that in. It's good, not as good as Paranoid, but decent. The fact I've bothered to listen to it again is a pretty positive sign. Gave it a 3 last time, will go with a 4 on the new ranking system. It's about a 7/10
Miles Davis
2/5
So so samey.
3/5
It's just OK.
Weather Report
2/5
No more instrumental stuff please.
The Replacements
3/5
Not as "punk" as some of their stuff. Not bad, but not their best IMO.
Iggy Pop
4/5
Yeah, pretty good this.
The Mamas & The Papas
3/5
Almost a 4.
Hugh Masekela
1/5
New policy. All instrumental stuff is getting 1 star. Fundamentally, it's not what I listen to music for.
Dinosaur Jr.
2/5
Boring.
Waylon Jennings
3/5
It's actually OK
U2
3/5
It was a lot less U2 than the other U2 album we had, and that's obviously a good thing.
David Bowie
3/5
Very ropey start, picked up a bit, still quite poor. A low 3.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
A good, solid 4. Nebraska is a better album and I'm not sure that's a 5.
Massive Attack
3/5
Mostly just inoffensive. 1 or 2 songs were OK.
Django Django
3/5
Not sure if it's just surpassing some very low expectations. Art rock sounds like a proper wanky pretentious concept. I actually didn't mind this though. 5/10.
Calexico
2/5
Black Sabbath
3/5
Worst of the 3 so far. Still not bad.
Van Morrison
3/5
Can't fault it for variety. There's a bit of everything on here. Listening to the first song I thought fuck me, I had no idea Van Morrison made country music. Other than that song, apparently he didn't.
Overall, didn't love or hate it. Couple of songs were pretty decent.
The Electric Prunes
3/5
It's. 2.5 rounded up. It would be rounded down if it wasn't so short.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
It's good, but very samey.
George Michael
2/5
I did, it was shit.
Willie Nelson
3/5
It's not bad, but nothing jumped out enough to rate it higher. Possibly better on relistens, but who's got time for that?
Sex Pistols
4/5
Wanted to give this a 5, and I thought I would, but Rotten's voice grates on me more than I remember.
Public Enemy
3/5
Not sure whether to go 2 or 3. It isn't terrible but there's no chance I'll listen to this again.
The Pogues
5/5
Great album.
Tangerine Dream
5/5
With Harness in this. Even the instrumental track wasn't enough to drag it down. Couple of songs I wasn't massively keen on, but too many hits to not be a 5.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Meh.
Fiona Apple
3/5
Agree with Harness again. The first few songs were pretty good. A bit of variety but it meanders into pleasant but unnoteworthiness.
Meat Puppets
3/5
The punkier stuff on here is decent. He doesn't have the voice for the slower stuff though.
Morrissey
2/5
He's a boring weird try hard.
Guns N' Roses
4/5
It's a 3.5 rounded up. It's a pretty silly album. I think further listens would probably lower the score for me, but it was sort of fun as a one off.
Garbage
4/5
Liked this more than I expected. 3.5. Feels too weak for a 4, but there we are.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Not bad, not great.
Astor Piazzolla
1/5
No
Prince
2/5
Don't know why I expected this not to be shit.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
2/5
Suffers from too much hype.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Bit too long. Very pleasant listen though.
The Notorious B.I.G.
2/5
Gangster rap is not for me.
Kate Bush
3/5
Not much of a Kate Bush fan it seems.
Van Morrison
3/5
Thought the previous VM album was better. Perhaps should have given that a 4. Whatever.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
1/5
Not on Spotify, can't be fucked searching for it. Where has the did not listen option gone?
Pretenders
3/5
Pretty mixed bag. Some songs worthy of a 4, but overall I think 3 is fair.
Fatboy Slim
3/5
Heard it said that a man's favourite word is his own name. That's certainly true of Fatboy Slim.
ZZ Top
3/5
It's decent enough.
LTJ Bukem
1/5
I gave it 15 minutes. Fuck off.
Coldplay
3/5
Boring.
Willie Nelson
4/5
Better than the first Willie album.
Linkin Park
2/5
Music for angsty teenagers.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
Agree with the others. It's decent, but not a 4.
Ash
3/5
It's ok, nothing special. Too much distortion.

3/5
It's between a 3 and a 4. More a 3.
Foo Fighters
3/5
Boring.
ZZ Top
3/5
It just is.
The Blue Nile
2/5
Boring.

3/5
An obvious 3.
Tom Waits
3/5
Feels like something I'd like more on relistens.
Billy Joel
4/5
This is pretty good.
U2
3/5
It's ok. I don't really like U2.
The Monkees
3/5
There are worse bands to do an impression of. It's a 2.5 rounded up.
Cocteau Twins
3/5
Pleasant, but just sort of nothing.
OutKast
2/5
1 or 2 OK tracks, but mostly shit.
Franz Ferdinand
3/5
Pretty average.
R.E.M.
4/5
Pretty mixed album. Great in places, average in others. 4 seems fair.
Frank Sinatra
3/5
Pleasant enough as background, but nothing more. 2.5
Youssou N'Dour
2/5
Might have been a 3 if I could understand it.
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
It's OK, not particularly enjoyable to me.

Found it a bit boring.
Taylor Swift
2/5
Exceptionally bland. Rarely noticed when one song ended and the next started.

1/5
Boring as absolute fuck.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Pretty average
Queen
3/5

Not as gay as expected.
Supergrass
4/5
Punkier than I expected.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Good album. Couple of songs I didn't like.
Neil Young
3/5

The Band
4/5
3.5 rounded up.
The Birthday Party
3/5
There are bits that are ok, but this isn't good.
Goldfrapp
3/5
Pleasant enough, but a bit boring.
Funkadelic
2/5
Musically it's Oak, but I can't abide all the shitty talking over it.
Lou Reed
4/5
Quite enjoyed that.
TLC
2/5
Not for me Clive.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Nice funk-soul mix that. Enjoyed.
Coldcut
1/5
"You don't need to listen to that one, trust me."
Led Zeppelin
3/5
It's OK. Presumably original at the time. But meh.
Elvis Costello
4/5
Been a while since I've had an album I was already familiar with. Good stuff.
The Shamen
2/5
Debated a 1, nothing good about this at all, but it's not quite offensive enough.
Portishead
3/5
OK. Bit boring and repetitive.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
It's pretty middle of the road.
Keith Jarrett
1/5
Paul isn't happy either
Oasis
3/5
Just don't really get Oasis. It's OK, but nothing special.
The Icarus Line
3/5
Don't hate this. Won't be listening again though. 5/10 so rounds up.
David Bowie
4/5
Decent. But nothing special.
Fiona Apple
3/5
It's a low 3, borderline 2. Feel she has some talent, but there's way too much bullshit going on here.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Rush
2/5
Low 3 musically, but I can't stand the singers voice.
Bill Callahan
3/5
Not sure if I enjoyed that or not. Pretty strange artist/album.
Bob Dylan
5/5
4.5 rounded up. Lot of hits on here. Not much of a dip in quality on the other songs.
Sabu
1/5
A fucking drun solo track? Get to fuck.
The Prodigy
4/5
Tough to score this. It's not really my kind of music, but it was good paired with a gym session. Probably worth a 4 in that context, but I can't see me listening to it again in any other context. I'll go with a 3.5 rounded up.
Elvis Presley
4/5
Enough hits on here for a 3.5, so rounding up.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Miles better than the last Nick Cave offering. Probably a 3.5.
Drive-By Truckers
2/5
Would have been a low 3, but 93 minutes of it can fuck off.
Lightning Bolt
1/5
I'd call it a piece of shit, but I've definitely made more melodic sounds when taking a shit.
The Band
3/5
The first song was really good. The rest of the album was OK.
Wilco
3/5
Inoffensive, but a bit bland.
The Sugarcubes
2/5

Silver Jews
3/5
Pretty much the same as Harness. Feels like something I could enjoy more, but it's a 3 on 1 listen.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Enjoyed freewheeling more than this. Still, probably a 4.5.
The Who
3/5
Unsure between a 3 and a 3.5 so going to round down. It's enjoyable, but they have better albums than this.
Songhoy Blues
2/5
It's not bad musically, but I'm a lyrics man.
Ali Farka Touré
1/5
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
Quite poor that.
Dire Straits
3/5
It's just alright.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5

The Clash
5/5
One of my favourite albums.
Bob Dylan
3/5
Judas
Sepultura
2/5
It was fine for the gym, but nah.
David Bowie
2/5
It would be interesting to compare pre and post death reviews of this album. It's not very good though is it?
N.W.A.
2/5
We're so hard. We've got massive guns. We fuck all the bitches. Tiresome.
Pere Ubu
3/5

3/5
Coldplay being Coldplay.

The B-52's
3/5
It's pretty odd, but I quite liked it.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
A couple of songs on there I quite liked, but probably not enough for 3.5.

Probably should have given Nevermind a 4 in hindsight.
Stan Getz
2/5
Bit boring.
Iron Maiden
3/5
Strange choice of Maiden albums. OK, but no real hits.
Jethro Tull
3/5
Probably better on relisten, but not sure I've got the motivation to listen again.
Fairport Convention
3/5
Doesn't deserve bricking.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Absolutely loved this as a kid. Very strong start to the album, but it meanders to a bit of a stop. Some of the lyrics I enjoyed as a 15 year old don't resonate now.
The Offspring
4/5
Was intended for this, not the Nick Cave album. Absolutely loved this as a kid. Very strong start to the album, but it meanders to a bit of a stop. Some of the lyrics I enjoyed as a 15 year old don't resonate now.

3/5
It's OK. Bit all over the place.
Joy Division
2/5
Found that very boring.
The Smiths
3/5
It was ok
5/5
