Reviews (page 3 of 14)

Exactly what I think of when I think Michael Jackson. It is no surprise he was a massive star when you listen to this album. 5/5

The early 2000s were a weird time to become aware of Michael Jackson. I was born over a year after MJ’s last US #1 hit, so he was more of a public figure than a musician by the time I learned about his existence. My extent of my Michael Jackson “knowledge” basically started & ended with him being a kid diddler who bleached his skin white and dangled his baby over a balcony (thanks, Entertainment Tonight). Needless to say, I didn’t have a very positive impression of him and never really sought out his music as a child. I think my first memory related to an actual Michael Jackson song was my cousin showing me and my sister a video of him moonwalking to “Billie Jean” on YouTube, but I never consciously listened to his music until after he passed away. I remember saying I didn’t know any of his songs, which prompted my mom & sister to say something to the effect of “You’ve never heard ‘Thriller’? How?” I should have said “I don’t know, you tell me” – it’s not like my grade school friends were ever going to be the ones to introduce me to the King of Pop. I started becoming more familiar with MJ’s hits when my sister got the soundtrack to This Is It (the documentary about the rehearsals leading up to his planned London residency, directed by the same guy who did the High School Musical trilogy), which featured cuts from albums like Bad, Dangerous and HIStory. It also included more than half of the songs on Thriller (basically all of the singles, minus “The Girl Is Mine” and “P.Y.T.”), so I recognized most of the album’s offerings when I eventually moved to check it out on my own time. If I remember correctly, the thing that finally made me bite the bullet was finding out that Thriller was the best-selling album of all time. I was under the impression that Their Greatest Hits by the Eagles held that title (turns out it was the best-selling album in the U.S.), so learning that an honest-to-God studio album from MJ was the actual worldwide #1 inspired me to finally give him a shot. I didn’t expect much, so saying the LP over-delivered would be an understatement – I was fully blown away and immediately bought it on CD. Here’s the thing about Thriller… it’s not just an album full of big singles (though that certainly doesn’t hurt its case), it’s pop music executed to perfection. A collection of tracks as perfectly written, perfectly produced, perfectly performed, perfectly varied and perfectly satisfying as Thriller simply doesn’t exist. There might be a case to be made that its lack of a consistent theme and short-ish tracklist are downsides, but I’d argue that the album being as great as it is only proves that an LP can still function without being overly conceptual or 10+ tracks long. Returning to Thriller for this challenge and seeing some tracks I couldn’t even recall (such as “Baby Be Mine” and “The Lady in My Life”) was admittedly a bit worrisome, but my concerns completely melted away as soon as the songs came on – even the least memorable cuts are wonderful to listen to. People like to trash “The Girl Is Mine” for its corny dynamic and possessive lyrics, but I personally feel like it adds to Thriller’s variety in a positive way. It’s also pretty innocent at its core and is just as well-made as every other track on the album. Ultimately, there’s a reason why Thriller is THE gold standard when it comes to pop albums: it excels in every facet imaginable and it’s got the hits to back that up. You’re not going to find an LP with this many stone cold classics, plus deeper cuts that are almost as good as the singles. While it’s not an album I put on as often as I should, I can confidently say that it’s an absolute masterclass and a completely respectable pick for “greatest album of all time.” Genuinely don’t understand how anyone could dislike it, pedo accusations aside. Highlights: ALL OF 'EM

I mean how could you not like this. Pinnacle of pop music. Also highlights how important a short concise album is with no filler, banger after banger

What’s not to like! Only hits, great album cover, absolute classic monster

Obviously a classic. My listen through had me notice that MJ understood that catchy pop songs should be 90% chorus, which a lot of these are.

Perfect album, HEE-HEE/10

The best album of all time unless someone can show me different.

I knew most of the album without actually properly listening to it before, so many iconic tracks. Classic, I like Beat It most though I enjoy it all bar The Girl is Mine

All-time great album. 6 smash hits, 1 song with Paul McCartney, and 2 very solid deep cuts. Nothing else to say.

i mean yeah. its one of the best albums of all time. every single track is a bop and its got so many classics. thriller, beat it, billie jean is a goated 3 track run. i mean yeah this is a 10/10

Best pop album of all time. Period.

unbelievable songs

Cmon now, one of the greatest of all time. Every track is essential. Every track is stand alone. I have had different periods in my life of loving one of these songs but for different reasons

Have listened to this before and it is brilliant, but don't want to listen to his music ever again.

Own it on vinyl. Great album, even the non big three songs are great. Easy to put on and listen to and it is a mood lifter.

A timeless album

Perhaps one of my favourite albums, there's not many weak points. Absolute bangers from start to finish!

37 minutes of mankind's absolute musical peak (well, one peak) and then "The Lady in My Life"

I've listened to this album hundreds of times "human nature" is my favorite

Excelente álbum

Too bad about the pedophilia or whatever was going on.

I used to think "Another Part of Me" was my favourite Michael Jackson song, but I'm pretty sure it's actually PYT. This album has three back to back to back hits in "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean", and they're not even the best part of the album. Between RnB jams, Soul ballads and pop-funk masterpieces it's not hard to see why it's the top-selling album of all time. As someone who is trying to be impartial and just judge the music based on the music, it's pretty sad to see people rating this one down because of pedo allegations. Genuinely, I don't mind if you give it a 1 because you actually don't like the album, but over his personal life? Seems a bit unfair, regardless of what you believe about the man. Even more so when you consider that he was legally found innocent of any charges, and what remains is all public speculation. Anyway, I found this album spectacular from start to finish, and I think humanity was largely correct when they decided that this is one of the greatest albums of all time.

There are so many iconic tracks on just this one album, and even the less talked about tracks are bangers.

Classic- through and through

This was the standard for pop music for a long time. It still sounds amazing.

He Michael when I'm jacksoning it

Absolute Genius! Album tremendo.

Listen, I didn't hate like the two weak-ish songs, and the rest are perfect, and I feel weird about it considering The Man Behind It but man, it is just immaculate!

wonderful album, definitely the best album of all time for me! doesnt feel dated and is consistanly a banger!

THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!

A no skip album. Nuff said

classic

Brilliant album.

All time great. Top to bottom. Plus you get 4 all time tracks.

Do I even need to say anything?

not my favorite. but i can appreciate that these songs were made very well and i liked how they were made but over all this album is not for me

Incredible

Definitely more duds on here than on Bad, but this album has three of the top ten greatest pop songs of all time, so i’m contractually obligated to give it five years old. Oops, wait, I meant five stars! My bad.

Top 10 albums of all time. I can’t cancel this album, no matter the person behind it. Formative music for a 13 year old redneck who needed to be shown that there’s more than country and hair metal in the musical pantheon.

Literally the first album I ever own d and was obsessed with. I was 5 and would spend hours listening and relistening to this tape. I still think it is a near perfect album.

I absolutely love this one it's very good

C’mon man. You definitely can’t beat this…well, maybe you can…wink, wink… Yeee heee!

from the age of 5 until like 11, mj was my biggest icon and the embodiment of the music itself. then for some reason i completely stopped listening to him, returning back only now. after all this time, i guess i was not that far from the truth

não ouvi todas as músicas, mas gostei

Pretty great album.

So good, I preferred the slower songs that highlighted his voice a bit more. Some songs like Billie Jean, Beat It, and Thriller are severely overplayed but I loved Human Nature, Baby Be Mine, and The Girl Is Mine. The mixing and musicianship on this album is undeniable

Pop bangers. An iconic album

Is this a four- or five-star album? “Beat It” and “Billie Jean” are essential, of course, and “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” isn’t far behind. But then there’s the treacle of “The Girl Is Mine.” And the title track is a far better video than song. Hmm. I guess I’ll round up, but I do have a qualm or two.

There is a reason this is the biggest selling LP in recorded music history. he production is flawless and Jackson ensured there is something for everyone on the record. His vision of an LP where every song could be a single was realized, and the success of the record helped record companies realize an album cycle could be extended when so many singles could be successful.

didn't rate it on the day I should have, saw it and went back because not to listen to and rate it would be a crime. a classic for a reason.

Before I begin writing my thoughts on each track, I want to preface with saying that obviously I've heard this album before. I believe you'd actually have to be living under a rock and purposely avoiding society within the last forty years to not hear at least three of the tracks from it. It also should be no surprise that this album deserves an immediate five star rating for at least six of the seven singles that came out of the record, all of which being absolute masterpieces in their own way. Without further delay, It's time to actually listen to the album and talk about the tracks themselves. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - This might be one of the greatest starts to an album ever. A simple but undeniable groove that immediately captures the listener. Alongside MJ's vocals are some absolutely low hanging backup vocals that can catch a crowd hook line and sinker. Even if it wasn't for the repeated words and phrases through most of the song, the final breakdown of "ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa" gets EVERYONE. Baby Be Mine - An immediate departure from the electric opening, Baby Be Mine slows things down just enough to let you hang more onto Jackson's words and the beautiful synth. A quintessential 80s funk ballad. The Girl Is Mine - Alright, well they can't all be winners. This track is easily the weakest of the album and honestly one of the most mediocre tracks in both Michael Jackson and the great Paul McCartney's careers. Infamously, this track was the first single to be released and had critics expecting the album to bomb. Instrumentals are fine, vocals are fine, McCartney is fine - but it's just NOT the standard you'd expect from both this album and a collaboration between musicial giants. Thriller - I honestly don't even know what I could say about the next three songs that hasn't been said in much better words by critics and audiences from the past forty years. Thriller is everything that makes this album and so much more. From the unique theme to the just perfect instrumentation and vocals, and don't forget the fantastic Vincent Price cameo towards the end of the song. Perfection, and defintely worthy of being the title track. Beat It - As stated in my notes on Thriller, I can't possibly do this song justice. Another perfect Michael Jackson song with a perfect music video and one of the greatest solos in pop history thanks to the one and only Eddie Van Halen. Billie Jean - The trio of MJ's most recognizable hits ends with the beautiful Billie Jean. Regardless of who Billie Jean may have been or if she was ever real, Jackson sings his heart out in this track that is otherwise carried by its now iconic drum beat and funky guitar picking. Human Nature - The album may have moved on from the most recognizable singles, but it instead goes into what may possibly be my favorite song in MJ's whole career. This song is just beauty. I particularly appreciate Michael's softer vocals in this and just the entire feel of the song has this mystique to it that, at least in my own experience, keeps me listening again and again. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - Ok so obvious joke about the basically unavoidable allegations of the man himself aside, P.Y.T. is another infectious jam much like the opening Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' that serves as a perfect way to give the album one last crowd pleasing groove before it ends with the final track. The Lady in my Life - This song is a perfectly fine way to end the album, it's a tad generic but pretty harmless and I'm sure it has its fans but it's not one I particularly find myself going back to. Despite that and my thoughts on The Girl Is Mine, I still think that front to back Thriller is an absolutely perfect album and a must listen to. Final thoughts - This album is everything good, and even a bit of the meh from the legendary Michael Jackson. There's a reason why it's the second highest selling album of all time and the most successful and revered in Jackson's career.

classic 10/10

Easy 5 star, great album

Classic

This one sneaks the full five stars. The album is mostly packed with hits, and the middle trio of Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean could quite possibly be the best streak of songs in a single album - peak creativity, production and performance. The rest of the album is strong, and I seem to be the odd one out in terms of loving the McCartney duet. I do think the closing track - The Lady in my Life - is an odd choice as the album peters out and loses momentum. 9/10

This album is amazing

Prety good bangers - also liked the ballady thing with paul mcartney. Beat it is such a great song

9.5/10

6.0 HOT DAMN! have I been looking forward to this album. (42:16 (w/ thriller at 5:58 album cut not the 13:42 mini-movie version, 9 tracks) 9 tracks, 1982) Sometimes the album of the day is a chore, and I'm like dang, was hoping for something better . . . not today! 5, Five, Cinco, Cinq, Wǔ, pięć - it's just a five everywhere in the world!!!! Now do I wish they would have moved Baby Be Mine and The Girl is Mine to the back of the album. . .hell yeah as that would have been the 7 universally loved songs in a row in the history of non-Greatest Hits albums release ever! You don't sell nearly 70 million certified records without broad mass appeal. Man fuck I love this album - Paul McCartney (yeah the song is weak but still, SIR PAUL), the greatest video(s) ever (Thriller is really more of a mini-movie, Beat It crushes it), the dance moves, Playmate Ola Ray (super-hot), Vincent Price (should have taken royalties, $20k probably looked like a huge sum in 1982), Quincy Jones, Eddie fucking Van Halen as your guitar soloist it's like someone pulled out all the stops (and they did! - Off the Wall was huge commercial success but no one, I mean no one could have anticipated Thriller's instant (I mean overnight) impact. MJ almost printed money for MTV. No album before, or since, has changed the world like this album did. In today's digit era I highly doubt anyone will ever have as many certified sales. Not to mention Micheal's stage presence in the early 80's was just 2nd to none - I highly doubt any musician will EVER be able to afford to put on the production show (I read it was something like 24 semi-trailers just to move costumes, lights and props from city to city) that the Thriller tour was (probably doesn't technically count in the 1001 'score' but it's my damn ranking so it counts! - F. O. I still tell people this was, hands down, the best concert I've ever been to and at the time I was into early 80's heavy metal (Quiet Riot and Van Halen), so this was totally not my thing then. I don't what else to say, this is a 5 for so many reasons. Anyone that doesn't give this at least a 4 simply isn't able to suspend their feeling about his personal life from his music (understandable, "I want to love you pretty young thing" hasn't aged well :-P) BUT. . . by this standard so many of these 1001 artists IF THEIR LIVES WERE AS PUBLIC as Micheals would be 1's. Most just hid their crazy better.) In general money makes people terrible people, in general sudden fame makes people terrible people and in general being a child super star makes you a terrible person - superstardom is like multiplying all times each other x 10. It's amazing he wasn't more fucked up (well . . . ) When Micheal says in the Thriller video he's different, he's not like "other guys" well . . . yeah, there will never be another Micheal. I loved Off the Wall but I remember hearing (on a cassette, a friend stood in line to get it the day of release, thought he was nuts) Thriller the first time and from the first 15 seconds of track 1 I knew this was going to be one of the best albums of time. By the time we got to Beat It I had lost my damn mind. Favorite Song (they're all good) - Wanna be Startin' Something', honorable mention Billie Jean Track Listing 1. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 6:03 - Holy fucking shit 12/10 I loved it the first time I heard it - lost my damn mind in fact - best "mass appeal" starting song on an album maybe ever (OK not my genre but still mass appeal), it bumped the previous best opening song ever which held by none other than MJ on Off the Wall ("Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough") damn did Micheal know how to start a show, an album, what an entertainer. Micheal practically invented opening the show with your encore song. When the band cold opened with this song and Micheal emerged from a hidden compartment in SLC I thought those damn white ass Mormons (whitest damn MJ concert I bet of the year (1983)) would have lost their damn minds. If a conniption was a real thing, I'm sure heads would have been exploding! No one and I mean no one (capacity crowd) sat for one second of that whole show. 2. "Baby Be Mine" 4:20 6/10 (2nd worst song on album) 3. "The Girl Is Mine" (with Paul McCartney) 3:42 cheesy as fuck but yeah still an 7/10 4. "Thriller" 5:58 9/10 everyone loved it but not my favorite on the album 5. "Beat It" 4:17 10/10 6. "Billie Jean" 4:57 11/10 7. "Human Nature" 4:06 8/10 (it's a good song - it doesn't exactly fit the theme but it's a really good song - move this to the end too) 8. "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" 3:58 9/10 9. "The Lady in My Life" 5 5:00 5/10 We all know Micheal didn't have any ladies in his life (Lisa doesn't count, equally fucked up childhood) OK can I say more about this album? Only that I have no idea how I wasn't a bigger MJ fan in the 80's. My excuse is I hung out with the wrong crow me and my mullet wearing white boy trailer trash friends were kind of stuck in hair metal. So glad I got to see you while you were in your prime (and alive, what a shame.) Where's the six button?

HEE hee!

*1982. *This is just 42 minutes of pop perfection and nostalgia. *Wanna Be Startin Something, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, and PYT. *Hard to argue with the cultural phenomenon that is this album, including the songs, music videos, and dances. RATING - 9/10

all the sounds are just MWAH

Loved it. No notes.

It's literally the greatest pop album of all time. Better than some people's greatest hits compilations. Strong contender for best album ever made, although I think there are some others I'd personally put over this, it's sheer magnitude is hard to deny

Banger absolu

One of his best if not his best.

I don’t know if anything needs to be said about this one. It’s an amazing album.

Just wow. What an album. Hit after hit. Monster hits, too. You may not have liked the man, but his music was great.

Musically, visually, culturally iconic, there is not much to say when every song has it's own Wikipedia page. Best MJ? Debatable Best Toto? Perhaps

There's a lot of cheese here.

lady of my life is underrated

Another classic MJ album. Tons of bangers on this one, and then a few softies. At least five of these tracks are timeless. Probably 5/5 just based on that.

Really rich album, even if I have to hold my nose giving him anything other than a 1

#25 - 1086 , Thriller - Micheal Jackson 1982 Pop /s , Isn't this the worst album of all time ? Couldn't bear a second listening to that voice . MJ is awful!!!!! with that production QJ ( Quincy Jones ) should have been fired and that cringey collab with " Paul From The Beatles " was worst decision for this album

insanely strong middle, solid beginning and ending. paul mccartney tried to ruin it but i didn't mind him in that one song. great album!

An all time all-timer.

Of course. 5 *

I mean, it’s thriller. It’s the best selling album for a reason, and a damn good one at that. Just banger after banger. Half the songs in here could’ve been released as singles and would’ve topped the charts. Easy 5 stars. 7/9 added to Ear Candy.

All but two songs are classics and even those are not bad. 5/5 easy

Damn! This lottery machine knows what I like. I wonder when we'll draw an album by someone I haven't listened to before... I have good memories associated with every single song on this record. It's not just sentimental value, this album sounds truly amazing. Even though I can't make it through P.Y.T. with a straight face, how can I not give this album a 5?

What can you even say about this album that hasn't been said before? It's damn near perfect. Every note, every flourish, everything is immaculately placed. Even a goofy-ass song like "The Girl Is Mine" works because Jacko and crew took it so seriously. This is genuine art. I never get tired of listening to it.

1.5 unfamiliar tracks on this one, I personally thought he peaked with "The Wall"

Highlights: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) Lowlights: --------------------------------------------------------- In the immortal words of Duke Nukem, "Hail to the King baby."

Magnificent album

They don't call him the king of pop for no reason.

Redefining his personal sound, redefining pop music as a whole, redefining marketing and promotion. The only thing this album can't do is make me like the skit with Paul McCartney in place of a real outro on The Girl Is Mine. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' Thriller Beat It Billy Jean Human Nature P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

Classic

The only reason not to love this album is because you (rightfully) hate the singer, and even then Thriller is still an undeniably excellent album.

No. 86 An absolute banger this one, I love it!

For the second day in a row, I get an album that I've already heard a billion times over just from listening to the radio. And you know, that's okay with me. I don't normally consider myself to be like a huge Michael Jackson fan or anything, but then I listen to Thriller and it's like "hey, I like that one! Oh hey, I like this one too! Wow, you'll never believe about this third one!" I even like the one with Paul McCartney on it, and *nobody* ever admits to liking that one!

Masterpiece

I mean. It's literally Thriller

Mostly bops, a couple flops.

Favorite Track: Thriller

Obviously a 5 star

Obviously the best record ever

47/1089 It finally happened - one of the top/bottom 20 albums. After finding Bad...well, bad - I was ready for disappointment with this one. But no, I get it now. This is why he's the King of Pop. Funky as hell, catchy as hell, not just endless "ooh! ahhh! awh-awh-awh! hehe!". It's short, sharp, and to the point without filler or fluff. Thriller-Beat It-Billie Jean back to back to back is also absolutely amazing. I want to rate it lower because it's not my sort of music and I got kinda tired of him on the radio, but I cannot in good faith when I liked it this much. God damn it's a good album.

The entire album should be listened to, not just the hits.

FAVORITEEE

Only liked 3 tracks: Human Nature(the rhythm and the lyrics "If they say? why why -- Tell them that its human nature), Beat It and of course Billie Jean I do think that Billie Jean and Beat it are for sure legendary tracks, I like this album only because of these two

Legendary album, nothing to throw away! Special hand up to Human nature, P.Y.T, This girl is mine and Billie jean.

Ah yes, another non-problematic five star album from the king of pop himself! Listen to it with a clear mind and enjoy it with no guilt!

Probably one of the world's most popular albums ever. Nothing to say, everybody knows and loves it

Michael Jackson is a classic👌

This is #day529 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this is Thriller by MJ. What else is there to say? They don't do it like that anymore. Yes, this is an album you must hear before you die. This is a 5 out of 5, of course. Looking forward to #day530.

I'm gonna touch you

This is about as perfect as an album can be, Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones are truly a match made in heaven. The closest thing to a clunker still features SIR Paul McCartney.

MJ is the star, but the musical composition is incredible. There is every pitch in here, all energy levels, and there's not a single miss. This is the best pop album of all time, MJ is at his vocal best, there's a Van Halen solo, there's Vincent Price, there's Paul freaking McCartney. What are you doing, go listen to this album right now!

Hard to not think about the allegations, regardless kind of fun to hear this for the first time in decades.

Top tier Michael!

Game changer of an album from start to finish.

Mama say mama sam ma poosaaa Mama say Mama sam ma poosaaa Mama say Mama sam ma poosaaa I dont know what hes saying but it is music to my ears! So many outstanding, arguably perfect songs on here, Wanna be Startin somethin, Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean, Human Nature. Like these songs stand strongggg on their own, but together, pshhhhahh, talk about a behemoth of an album. The other songs are great too. Its clear Michael's pursuit of perfection really is something you dont see on other albums, and is something that I have to respect. Not many artists out there that compare to the king, if ANY. Thriller might be one of my favorite pop songs of all time, bar none. Plus the music video, gahh, I love it. Anyways, im getting off track, the album, its great. I was looking forward to a Michael album coming up, as ive never listened front to back on one of his. Looking at the other albums of his on the list, I have a feeling this one might be the top one for me. Just so many great bursts of creativity in here, the singing is top notch, the synth, the variety from going from more love pop to this deep cool type of pop, back to a softer style to close it off. All while making you want to get up and dance. 9/10

All time great album. Fuck it was good

Awesome album, insane how many hits this produced.

Previously known. Conflicted for obvious reasons, but man... Only one song isn't worth the time.

It’s a classic for a reason.

Loved it. Not too long, but just enough to really grasp your attention. I loved the rhythms and how cohesive the songs were with the sounds; they all connected. Amazing! yeah, idk what else to say but i thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is simply a great album. I'm not a fan of pop music in general, from any decade. But this lands well because of the variety of styles and musicianship. From back when even pop stars used actual full bands and not just a light keyboard and drum machine. Michael almost completely got his wish of creating an album with all hits. "Why make an album with one hit and a bunch of B-sides?" Go, Michael! Trying hard to ignore his weirdness and illegal activities, but it's kind of hard when listening to "P.Y.T" or his high voice arguing over a woman. It doesn't sound like he's really fighting for "The Girl..." "Beat It" "Human Nature" and "Billie Jean" are songs that are simply a cut above. Fantastic and, more than the rest, they rise above the 80's production. Quincy is great, but a lot of this nails it directly to that decade. I never go out of my way to play MJ, but I appreciate it if it comes on, sometimes even singing along. While I don't play it for myself, I have to give credit to its songwriting and performances. Going to give it the rare 5 because of how much this album and it's videos changed the music industry at the time.

It's Thriller. There's no way this wasn't going to be a 5. It's a cheesy McCartney duet away from being a perfect album.

Separating art from artist

a real classic. from star to finish you groove your ass off. no skips at all.

An incredible album—it’s got the classics, the vibe, the tone, the guests. Very impressive.

Classic album full of hits

Overall rating by me: 9,5/10 Songs added to the playlist: ,,Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”,, ,,Baby Be Mine”, ,,Thriller”, ,,Beat It”, ,,Billie Jean”, ,,P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” Notes: I never have a bad thing to say about MJ’s music. The flow, the beat and raw vocals? Fenomenal. There is no other musician and performer like him and possibly never will be. Therefore it goes without saying that he gets the highest note from me here.

obviously amazing. every track is pretty awesome, and i found a new favorite in the girl is mine. best: billie jean or p.y.t.

A classic tbh

Exceptional album.

Several iconic songs

still in awe that michael made such a timeless album like this. i’ve been an avid fan for years but it was refreshing to sit and listen to it all the way through and appreciate each track 100/100!!! fav songs: the girl is mine, human nature, beat it, pyt

The goat of all albums

Classic… fav was def human nature

Such a classic, I loved being pushed to listening to the full album through.

Banger after banger

This was everywhere when I was a kid, and I forgot how many bangers are on this record, not to mention the EVH solo on Beat it. Hard to deny the power of this record.

vaga mitmekylgne

The question should be, "How had you not heard this album before you died?" The song "Baby Be Mine" and "The Lady In My Life" were not singles. Does anyone know these songs? It's impressive how many massive hits this album contains if you just count Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean you already have one of the best albums of all time... and then add in Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', P.Y.T and Human Nature to solidify the greatness. For good measure throw in a song co-written and sung with Paul McCartney. The history of the other musicians on the album (Eddie Van Halen, Steve Lukather) just to name two. It's beyond ridiculous how good these songs are and then of course produced by Quincy Jones. Again, how did you not hear this album before you died?

This is the kind of bizarre album where most of the songs are 5/5 and The Girl Is Mine is the absolute worst song of all time lol Jk, but not really. It averages to a 4.5 rounded up though. Way too many fire songs on this album.

i've already heard all of these songs. nonetheless, it still bangs just like the day it was released. note: jackson's undergarment is actually a zip-up jacket. neat!

Probably my second favorite album of the three masterpieces MJ created with Quincy. This is a perfect album, and Lady in My Life should’ve been released as a single.

Do I even have to say anything?

It’s Michael Jackson, someone would say Michael Jackson at his best. Some of his most iconic songs are on this album even the songs you don’t know are great. It’s five stars 1/5 didn’t finish the album 2/5 didn’t keep the album 3/5 kept it and will listen when songs randomly show up on shuffle 4/5 kept it and will listen to it again front to back on my phone 5/5 buying the vinyl

Michael at the height of his career. I forgot how many hits were on this album. Thriller tends to overshadow. Love the blend of pop/dance/soul. Plus, I am a sucker for horn sections. The McCartney duet was fun to listen to. I was surprised Michael wrote music and lyrics. I don't know if he wrote it with Paul McCartney in mind or he wrote it then decided to do it as a duet. Either way, nice blend.

Almost all killer, no filler here on Thriller. The one low point for me is the Paul McCartney duet, which is just cringe-inducing and dumb. This starts with one of my favorite MJ songs though, with Wanna Be Startin Something. With its swirling, gradually building disco/funk instrumentals, it's irresistibly catchy. And I dont think theres really any three song run greater than Thriller-Beat It-Billy Jean. Quincy Jones deserves a ton of credit for how big of a hit this was and still is, it sounds absolutely terrific forty years later.

Genial! QoA Adonis New.

Certified masterpiece

This was an amazing pull. Great album. I loved it.

Are you joking? Such a classic album! I appreciate that it wasn’t so long but not so short it was perfect! I’ve actually never taken the time to listen to album from start to finish, only the classic songs. But fell in love with every SONG!!!! 10/10

One of the most epic albums of all time. A few of the songs feel a little outdated now, like The Girl is Mine.. But this is still an easy 5 star album. Best songs: Beat It, Billy Jean, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and of course Thriller.

I don't need to re-listen to this album to rate it 5 stars. But I'm going to. Thriller into Beat It into Billie Jean like what are we doing here?! Name a better 3 song run. You can't. Seriously, like, what is the worst song on the album?? Cause I sure don't know.

full of bangers

Most correctly-hyped album of all time. KING OF POP

All the hits. No doubt Mike was a talented young man

Do I even have to say anything about this? I think the sales are enough of an argument as to why this is on the list. This is probably the best album of all time! It's just packed with hits, it takes you through all of the emotions, it's accesible for everyone and it's loved by everyone. Also, you can find so many genres in it, this being one of the reasons it's loved by everyone. But again, I don't think I need to give any explanations really. It's a 10/10 record and it will always be.

9 tracks of pure perfection. This is as much Quincy Jones's record as it is Michael Jackson. This is a great representation of pure master's working at the peak of their craft. It doesn't get anybody than this.

Goat Talk Goat Talk. Billie Jean is actually a hilarious song. Cuz was sliding around with activator in his jeri curls talkin bout the boy isn’t mine knowin damn well he was scared shitless and made a song as a PR flip.

oh i simply must dance

Even though its MJ this is undeniably a fantastic album

Number 1 selling album of all time for a reason. My kids were singing along.

Its mj… I dont need to say anything more

Shit. Shitshitshitshitshitshitshit. Shit! But this is too good.

Five stars - I don't even have to listen to it.

ts so beautiful mike youre the goat 4.5/5

Best selling for a reason. Michael and Quincy master pop, endless guest stars (mccartney, van Halen, price) and even the 80s elements that should be cheesy somehow work. Lyrics are silly though.

A classic. A wonderful listen.

Klassiker. No need to say anything

Good analog sound with nice groove

super chill vibes and really fun to listen to. literally timeless favs: beat it, billie jean, PYT

An excellent album with great infectious energy from start to finish. You can't help but dance along to the whole album, and there really isn't any weak point or break in the engagement. Overall stellar. Top tracks: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T.

The best pop album ever. One of my all-time time favorite. I remember hearing Billie Jean for the first time as a 6 year old child - and it was fascinating and mesmerizing. Every song is a hit. So many other artists contributed - Paul McCartney, Eddie Van Halen and Quincy Jones as a producer. This album was destined to become a legendary and best-selling work in music history

2nd favorite MJ album. Bangers.

Everythings right

The King of pop

Great album, can definitely see why he was so highly touted. Holds up even today, was nice to listen to the album in its entirety as I haven't before.

Not one of the best albums of all time but one of the most iconic.

Listening Notes The greatest pop album of all time? Quincy Jones and MJ is just magic, the production on this... Paul McCartney as your first guest spot on any album too VINCENT mf'ing PRICE 'Human Nature' is so underrated First time? No Standouts: NO SKIPS Will it go into your rotation? There's a time and place

not even my favorite michael album hes just that good.

Really solid album, the first three songs are all great and get the Michael Jackson energy and make you want to move along to it. The middle third is as iconic as Michael Jackson gets with Thriller, Billie Jean, and Beat it. The final three tracks are all really catchy as well, I’d listen to this on a loop and don’t think I’d be disappointed in any of them popping up on a music feed. -High floor + -High ceiling + -Multiple bangers + -Emotion inducing + -Relistenable + Checks all 5 boxes for me. Overall I’d rate this a 5/5.

classic

Classic. Not much more you can say than that.

No need for words.

Let me just start off with a disclaimer: This is not a review of Michael Jackson the human being (who I actually got to meet in a business capacity a few years before his death). The things Michael Jackson are accused of make him a 0-star human being, but I'm not reviewing Michael Jackson, I'm reviewing Thriller, and this is an excellent album. First of all, it's amazing how good the original album sounds. I've compared it to the 25th anniversary remaster, and honestly, I think the original sounds better. Just a terrifically produced album, extremely warm and spacious, even without the future advances in digital engineering, so a big shoutout to Quincy Jones and recording engineer Bruce Swedien. Even goofy schmaltz like "The Girl Is Mine" sounds so luxurious, I actually find it pleasant. But "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," "Thriller," "Beat It," "Billie Jean," "P.Y.T." That's already enough bangers for five stars right there, and the lesser known song" Baby Be Mine" is good as well. I'm not a big fan of "Human Nature" or the closing ballad "The Lady In My Life" but so what? Who rates an album by the songs you can skip? This is supremely well-engineered and composed pop music and I think it's reputation is deserved. If you don't want to listen to the man because of what he was, I get it. From the standpoint of having an appreciation of pop music, I think it's unassailable.

It’s Thriller. It’s the top selling album of all time for a reason.

Greatest album of all time

What is there to say that hasn’t already been said? This is an undeniably all-time great album. Michael Jackson’s songwriting and performing chops are in full display, Quincy Jones’s production is vibrant and memorable, and the hits are some of the greatest pop songs ever recorded. Not only that, but this album and its accompanying music videos have contributed more to pop culture than almost any work of art! Occasionally, the album feels too 80s for my taste, but I can readily forgive that. An easy, and well deserved 5 stars.

Classic. I was graduating high school and this album and cassette tape got worn out by everybody! His legendary voice and that 80's disco dance sound! good mix of different sound and themed music.

I tought I knew Michael Jackson music but I discovered some new gems

I was always a bit surprised at how incoherent and disjointed Thriller is as an album. We go from the dance pop funk of Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and Baby Be Mine to the twee balladry of his Macca collab, The Girl is Mine. Then we’re onto the title track with its long spoken word outro about ghosts and ghouls, before Beat It reaches its climax with a solo from Eddie Van Halen. On paper it shouldn’t work, but it does because there’s something for everyone. And Jackson, along with Quincy Jones, probably knew this and consciously designed Thriller this way. In any case, every song sounds impeccable (yes, including The Girl is Mine) and Jackson’s voice never sounded better. Despite its ubiquity, the album still feels like it continues to earn its place as the biggest selling album of all time.

Nostalgia aside, this is a well crafted collection of pop music from the Early 1980s. I can’t imagine another producer or arranger than Quincy Jones on this album because he made Michael Jackson sound incredible.

An essential 80s jammer. Slick production, catchier than hell.

Billie Jean, Thriller, and Beat it are all here!

They don't call him the king of pop for nothing. Great album.

Most iconic album from one of the most iconic musicians to ever do the thing. 5 stars, no notes

What a legendary album. So many bangers and you just can't help but howl when thriller drops ... Awoooooooo!!!

THAT'S WHY HE'S THE GOAT

Classic, MJ, still incredibly iconic

It's Thriller.

what an incredible album. only one real weak spot in the girl is mine and even that song isn't bad

The grip Michael Jackson had on pop music in the 80s was unreal. Even if you’re not a huge fan, like me, it’s almost impossible not to sing along once these songs start. There really isn’t a bad track on this album. Listening to it again just reminded me how massive this record actually was. The production, the hooks, the vocals, all of it still holds up. And bonus points for the Macca and Van Halen collabs. Favorite song(s): Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean/PYT

The King of Pop!

I saw that Michael Jackson wanted to create an album where every song was "killer" -- I would say mission accomplished. Also: Includes one of the greatest 3-song stretches of all time, with Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean all in a row.

I debated whether to give 4 or 5 stars to this album. Whilst it is the best-selling record of all time, I don't think its perfect, The Girl is Mine is the weaker of the two songs Michael did with McCartney and The Lady in my Life is kind of a weak closer. Having said that though, there's a reason why this is highly regarded. The hooks on here are phenomenal even in the weaker tracks. Michael was on top form here with hit after hit after hit. Its genuinely an essential pop album.

Of course 5 stars. Almost every song on this album was on the radio

still a fabulous listen!

Funky, delicious. Michael have changed music, and thriller is probably the peak of that. It's a long time since I've heard all of the album, and I've forgotten how big synth was, and its fucking cool. I love thriller, I love Michael it's a clear 5 from me, no questions asked. There is not one bad track on this album..

Perfect

I mean, come on. It's Thriller. I own this on vinyl and have heard all of these songs several times, most of them thousands of times. Every track is great to listen to, has great feel and vibe and just makes me happy. Most of these tracks were hits, many were sampled and interpolated by several songs that came after them, and all of there are expertly crafted, arranged, performed and recorded. I listened to it twice all the way through today and loved every minute of it. This is a candidate for the best album of all time, easily five stars.

8.5/10

Absolute perfection. Every song is a hit, one of the most memorable albums of all time for good reason.

They don’t call him the “King” for no reason. Michael Jackson was on another level, and this album proves it. From beginning to end it’s full of nothing but bangers.

You don’t need my review to know this album is an all-timer.

I ve never listened to this album before, must be one of the few? Full of hits from MJ - I remember Billie Jean in 1982, and the excellent video to Thriller

What more needs to be said about the single greatest pop album ever made? The production paved the way for basically every commercially-produced record for the next several decades, the songs are all classic (7 TOP TEN SINGLES ON ONE ALBUM?!) and the performances, vocal and instrumental, are top-notch. Every song is worth the price of admission here. Even the supposed "weak" songs as their reputation suggests ("The Girl is Mine" and "The Lady in My Life") are excellent- with the former being Jacko's experiment with AOR, complete with Toto "Rosanna"-esque percussion and bass, but a lovely vocal duet with McCartney provides the song added meaning as a "passing of the baton" from one pop god to the next. The latter in that category is a funk soul track with a fantastic keyboard sound and a deservedly chilled-out conclusion to an all-timer album.

First 5. But it's deserved.

I mean, do I really need to say anything about Thriller? Is it a little uncomfortable to listen to songs like Human Nature and P.Y.T.? Yes. Is The Girl Is Mine still a horrible duet with Paul McCartney? Yes. Did Sir Paul get the best duet between them on his album in Say, Say, Say? Yes. Is it the greatest set of songs ever recorded in the history of the world? Yes. Except for The Girl Is Mine, of course, but just one song out of nine being a crapper was amazing for 1983 and would be a miracle for today. I was eight when Thriller came out. I had no MTV, but you could catch videos on Friday Night Videos or on the odd TV show. So I’m not sure how I found out about Thriller. It must have been the radio. Whereever I found out about Thriller, it was the first real album I got. Unless you county The Chipmunks as a real album. I imagine mom bought it for me and my brother. I listened to that album until the needle wore through it. Our older brother Jeff made fun of us for listening to Thriller as he had graduated into hard rock being as he was in high school. I later snuck onto his room and listened to Cheap Trick’s Dream Police, which led me into the ways of hard rock and metal. But I still love Thriller. Anyway, Thriller was everywhere. Beat It was a phenomenon. When it started to get old, Billie Jean came out, then Thriller and on and on. Seven singles were released from this album and the record company didn’t even want to put out Thriller as a single because they looked at it as a novelty song. The musicianship is top notch as all the great session guys were called in to contribute. Several of those session guys went on to form ToTo an underrated band in the Yacht Rock genre, which I’m sure they’d all hate. There isn't much to say about this album, except for it's a must hear and I can’t imagine anyone not finding at least one song, if not a half dozen, that you have to add to your playlist. For us old heads, listening to this brings back a ton of great memories of just being a kid with no responsibilities except for listening to Thriller that day. Good times.

Didn't like the whole album, but it's hard to find a better back-to-back run of songs than Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean.

Amazing

Not sure why anyone would give this under 3 stars. It's the greatest pop record ever made, and nothing has ever come close to it's influence, it's reach, and superior production quality. I reviewed this with the 40th Anniversary release, which includes some cool extras, like "Carousel" (an instant Yacht Rock classic) and "Starlight" (which became the title track). Check out this version if you get a chance. The original 9 songs, however, go down as a pretty much instant 5 star album and everyone (who hasn't??!?!?!) should hear this before they die. 5/5

Yeah, this was stellar. The 1-2-3 punch of Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean is one of the best song sequences in music, ever. I don't think the rest of the album is as strong as those three songs, but also, those three songs are god-tier and can't really be beat. It's the best-selling album of all time - what else is there even to say. 4.5 rounded up

Yet another great album by Wacko Jacko!

Overall: 9/10 I don't have anything new to add to the conversation when it comes to Thriller. It's a great pop album that features many different styles and genres. Paul McCartney is in this album. You've probably heard all of these songs against your will at some point in your life. Fav Song: Billie Jean

What a fantastic album. Crazy how talented he was.

Oh my god! Thriller on a Monday morning. Got a little jolt of excitement when this album popped up. I had this album on vinyl when I was a kid and although I remember having the vinyl, I have no memories of listening to it. Funny how that works. Dare I say that this is the greatest album of all time? Not even a real MJ fan, but this album can't really be denied. Most records sold of all time (We don't count cheap "Best of" albums) and each song is absolutely iconic. In terms of cultural influence (while being a person of color), in terms of causing MJ to blow up to the degree he did and elevated to heavenly status across the globe. His music videos were like movies that told stories. The Moonwalk. All this came from this album. And just a few years earlier he was told black people on magazine covers won't sell. This was the next album that he dropped and without exaggeration altered history. Try going anywhere on the globe that doesn't know Mike. There's no one else like that in music before or since this album specifically. I can go song by song and yeah The Girl Is Mine is pretty cringe.....but it's also pretty revolutionary. Paul McCartney just dropped his first solo album after the death of John Lennon earlier in 1982 - which included Ebony and Ivory with Stevie Wonder. Then he makes a song with Michael about a interracial relationship with them both banging some girl and JOKING about which one of them gets her. Was there another song about an inter-racial relationship before this with two huge stars? Thriller - The most iconic music video of all time that is basically a movie. Absolutely incredible and game changing. Beat It - Van Halen on guitar with a classic riff and solo. Actual Crips and Bloods dancing together in the iconic MV, the group choreo. Iconic song. Billie Jean - Probably the most recognizable songs and beats ever. Michael did the first moonwalk to this song. This dude changed music and dance. PYT - We still use this lingo 40 years later because of this album. Human Nature - A really beautiful song that in hindsight kind of captures Michael's loneliness. A longing for real human connection. It's funny that as people were moving away from Disco, there is such a heavy and apparent disco element in PYT, Thriller, Billie Jean. I mean it's there in spite of the death of disco and it worked because of Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. There are a ton of albums that have changed the direction of music, but none that have changed the world to the degree of this one. Singing, Dancing, Music videos, and culture. Michael Jackson brought people together and despite his weirdness and controversy later in life, no one can deny he is the King of Pop. If you have somehow missed his music videos, do yourself a favor and watch Thriller and Beat It.........and then watch Weird Al's parody video Eat It (Which MJ also loved).

Thriller, beat it & billie Jean are as good a 3 songs as on any record

*****A good album, easy listening and fun

Loved this album since it first came out. Owned it on vinyl. Most of these songs are still regular radio staples.

Classic, very enjoyable all the way through

OMG…. Love this album!!!

New favorites: Wanna be startin somethin Human nature Classics: Thrille, Beat It, Billie Jean Honestly I only listend to MJ compilations. This album is a gem. It has a bit of similar vibe to Weeknd - Out of Time.

Human Nature does the heavy lifting here. Thanks Toto.

Don’t have a baby If you can’t feed the baby

This and Weird Al's Eat It were the first albums I owned. Given to me for my 12th birthday. Likely due to that it has a special place in my heart. That said the songs are amazing and leading of with "Wanna be startin somethin" what a perfect track one.

I've loved this since I was about 7. I don't care how popular it is, it's at the core of my music taste.

Did this site assign me Thriller on Halloween on purpose? How exciting! I am well familiar with this album as I grew up with MJ but you know I'm going to give it another listen, especially today. If you've read any of my reviews, you know that I do not do any merit-based grading. If the artist has a history, it won't play a factor in how their reviewed (though it may mean I listen somewhere other than Spotify so they don't get money). For Thriller, look at any review less than 4 stars, it almost always mentions something about him being a pedo (which I'm not totally sure but isn't that something that hasn't been confirmed?). If you take a purely music-focused objective approach to this, it's hard to argue it being anything less than 4 stars. As for the "must listen" value, which DOES factor into my reviews, this one is off the charts. Most successful pop artist of all time's signature album, full of top hits, culturally and historically relevant (even in film when you take the Thriller video into account), and the best selling album of all time. Musically, it's top tier as well. For me, it ticks all the boxes of a perfect album. Starts off with a banger, doesn't have skippable songs, has variety, and features MJ at his vocal peak. It's funky, it's catchy. Hot damn this just goes so hard. It's no wonder it has sold more than any other album. The only reason I can even fathom someone might give this 4 instead of 5 is not liking the two ballads that weren't massive hits like the rest...or maybe I could see the cringey Paul McCartney cameo taking this down a notch. Go figure the worst thing about this album is a guest appearance. Anyway I'd say this one is required, whether you like it or not. Absolute classic.

Banger after banger, MJ at his best! I enjoyed the variety of songs and the hype all the way through!

There is a reason that this is the best-selling album of all time. It's a masterpiece from start to finish. Every single song is perfect, though I don't like that one weird random key change in "Baby Be Mine." That brief moment is my only criticism of this record. If anyone reads this, please listen to the MFSL one-step master of Thriller, which opens up the compression and turns the compressed dance record into a detailed listener's record. Even an uploaded version on YouTube will reveal the biggest differences. Some don't like that the MFSL version naturally loses some of the original's punch. That's true, but I believe that both mixes have their place. Five stars.

Amazing and iconic. Tracks to Track: Billie Jean's my fave, but everything's gold

Hearing this record is a sonic transport back to a pivotal moment in music history. The production is so crystal-clear; It genuinely stands up as a flawless piece of 80s pop-funk. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions Thriller Beat It Billie Jean Human Nature P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

Likely the greatest album of all time.

10/10 Where do you start with the biggest selling album of all time? It can’t be shit, can it? Well no, it’s not. But it’s not just brilliant because it sold loads, it’s brilliant because it is an exceptional blend of songwriting and production, topped off with one of the greatest and most unique pop vocalists to have ever been committed to wax. The key thing that stands out to me listening to this in focused listening mode is how much of the quality of this record comes down to the layering of fundamentally simple structures, intertwined with some truly brilliant motifs and phrases that hook your ear and don’t let it go. If you were to listen to each multi-track layer on these songs in isolation, they would nearly all sound boring and simple, and would have vast periods of silence between the moments of playing. But when everything is built together, you get these shuffling, fiercely funky rhythms that force your body to move, and these undulating washes of sound that bloom and pulse into exceptional soundscapes that variously drive, move and embrace the ear. And then you throw Mike over the top of it. His vocal control is ridiculous, and if you listen to all of the different vocal tracks that he lays down, there is so much nuance, inflection and inventiveness in what he delivers that it’s impossible not to be enraptured by him. Again, in isolation some of his vocal ticks sound ludicrous, but built into the production, they add depth and funk to the vocal in such a unique way. Apart from the cringeworthy little dalliance with Paul McCartney (not actually a bad song, but pales in comparison to the rest), there isn’t a missed moment, and I still wouldn’t skip that one. All in all, Quincy and Michael are just a match made in pop music heaven. They both bring out the absolute best in one another and this was them at the peak of their powers. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin’ - The staccato and shuffling rhythms of this are just so good. There’s nothing overly complex about the songwriting, but it’s the layering of sound that makes it special. The call and response with the backing vocals is quality and the way the music develops towards the end and drops into the ‘mama-say mama-sah’ section is glorious. Baby Be Mine - This is smooth, but it’s the climbing cadence of the synth and bass parts in the chorus that really get me. There’s some absolutely outstanding funk guitar and synth playing in this song, a lot of it just rolling along in the background minding its own business, but adding so much feel to the groove. And when it catches your ear now and then it’s hard to avoid smiling. Try not tapping your feet to this song. Did you manage? If so, you’ve got no soul. The Girl Is Mine - Ah, the big clunker of the album. It’s a well written pop song, but boy is it cheesy and that little conversation bit is spine-tingling cringe of the highest order. If they’d re-written the vocals and maybe not done it as a duet, it could have the foundations of a decent song, but they didn’t. Also, Paul. I think Mike is more into boys anyway, so the girl probably is yours after all. Thriller - Another triumph of production and layering. So many of the riffs and lines are just one bar long, but it doesn’t get boring because there is SO MUCH going on. Instrumental parts come and go and just build this poly-rhythmic melting pot of groove. Just listen to the transition out of the chorus. Woof. Even the different verses have variation in the instrumentation that are subtle, but give extra depth to the songs. And the chorus hook is just iconic. Beat It - Time to throw some rock into the mix. The intro is brilliant and that riff is absolutely killer. It has a bit of a lagging swing to the beat with the snare only hitting on the four, which adds a cool pulse. The vocal is great too and plays so well with little bits of backing that bounce off the lead, along with some really nice choral pads to give extra weight. And then in pops Eddie Van Halen for a quality bit of shredding. Why not? Billie Jean - That bass line. This song is so simple, but so, so effective. Again, it’s a masterpiece of production. A song this simple could easily become boring and repetitive, but the little bits of instrumentation and backing vocals that drift in and out through various sections just grab your interest and keep things moving. From the string swells to the horn lines and the funky guitar strumming, there’s always something fresh to keep the groove moving. The vocals are so clear, singable and memorable that this is pretty much a perfect pop song. Human Nature - I love the vocal delivery on this song. It’s soft, but there are some really beautiful phrasings, like ‘does he do it that way’ and the backing ‘you are the one’. It’s such exceptional control and precision of phrasing that it’s glorious. The blend of instrumentation is again so good. There’s an edge of funk to the guitar, but the warmth of the different pad sounds just create this thick embrace of sound that’s so good. Some of the synth sounds do date this a little if you listen closely, but lost in the wash they don’t stand out too much. This is cheesy as anything, but I’m here for it. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - Bringing back the funk. So much to love about this one (except perhaps a paedo singing about pretty young things), from the switch from the staccato of the chorus into the more legato feel of the verse, the slap bass, the call and response ‘na, na, na’ vocal. It’s all so good. There’s one synth riff that comes after the two main lines of the verse (after the ‘pretty young thing’ and ‘tender lovin’ care’ lines) that I adore. So simple, but so funky. And this track is stuffed with little riffs, lines and moments like that. It shifts, it moves and it grooves. The Lady In My Life - The call and response between the synth and guitar kicks this off nicely. It’s an interesting use of the kick to place emphasis rather than provide a steady beat through the intro. It’s smooth and cool, but when it really kicks into gear at ‘lay back in my tenderness’. It’s super funky and again, the layering of so many different parts just creates this bed of shifting, pulsing sound that drives and swings away under Michael’s vocal. And his vocal has more of that exceptional control and nuance. He can drive it, he can soften it, he can throw in little bits of vocal fry and trills, along with his occasional whoops and other vocal ticks. It’s just magnificent in pretty much every possible way.

4.5 stars Sometimes everyone gets behind an album and get it completely wrong. This is not one of those cases. One of the best selling records of all time is the way for a reason. It is loaded with hits. Side 2 is almost flawless (“The Lady in my Life” is a dullish ending). Some of the production feels a little dated, but the music is so good it is forgivable. All of that said, obviously the allegations against MJ have tainted everything he has done. Makes it tough because he was a master at his craft. But it has to be noted.

As a teen when Thriller dropped, I wasn't into pop, but it's hard to say anything bad about this album. Michael Jackson's blend of talent and innovation is undeniable. With tracks like "Billie Jean" and Eddie Van Halen's killer solo on "Beat It," it bridges rock and pop effortlessly. Plus, who could forget waiting for MTV to air the full Thriller video? MJ didn't just make a music video; he built MTV with that one! Not even my favorite album of his (Off the Wall), but every reason to acknowledge Thriller is one of the greatest albums ever. If Michael was cool with Eddie, he gets my vote.

good!!

Evidently peerless. Amazing performance and production throughout. The only doubt I have is every song a "hit" as MJ wanted it to be? It's close but not quite in my eyes. Saying that, the absolute timeless bangers make up for it.

A thriller diller for sure

One of the greatest albums from one of the greatest artists of all time. Starting off very strong, hard to top this one

Drugi Michael! "Baby Be Mine" - en od dveh k nista bla singla - čist fletn komad. Naslednji je "The Girl Is Mine", s Paul McCartneyem. Iiiin, "Thriller". I love it. Morm poj video rewatchat. In "Beat It". Spet, a banger. (Wiki pravi, da igra the guitar solo v komadu Eddie Van Halen!) A, nevermind. Isti problem mam glede naslednjega, "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)". Hm, ta mi pa mogoče dejansko ni poznan. In pa zadnji, ta drugi ne-single, "The Lady in My Life". Začne se ful chill. In je v bistvu prou všečen komad.

Don’t need to listen to this again one to know it deserves 5 stars, but not going to turn down the opportunity to listen to it again.

Beat It alone would give it a high score and now it comes with almost nothing but great songs.

Despite the artist being something of a monster, beyond what Vincent Price himself might have played, this album is an all-time classic

master piece

3 stand out classics make this 5 stars for me.

One of the greatest albums of all time.

very good album. human nature is one of my favorites from it. a bit ironic, that it was written by toto.

Cultural reset at its finest.

Absolute gem of an album

Great album. A classic

Tight, not a bad song on it. Classic for a reason.

One of the greatest albums of all time. Every track is a hit.

17/10/2025 Never realised his main songs are on one album. Apart from the slow songs, this is a good album. Spotify listeners: 56.6 million

Obviously 5

Kjempebra!

10/10 hehe

Great album. First time I ever listened to it all the way through. I can definitely imagine why MJ was the legend he was if he was putting this out in the 80s

Can't beat it.

Could be the greatest pop album of all time. Doesn't overstay it's welcome in the slightest, and delivers something crisp and new with each track.

I listen to this album every October on repeat. Meticulously crafted, funky pop perfection

i get it

Best album of all time

Well I immediately thought of “art vs. artist” when I was listening to Kanye and it definitely came to mind here too. I gave MBDTF a 4 and this is undeniably a better album. It’s like a nuclear bomb of 80s pop and R&B. Near perfect and easy to see why it’s the top selling album of all time.

What absolutely annoys me: When radios cut off after 2/3 of a MJ track. His biggest talent is to "get into the beat" and then developing it. Sure the main songs are great but even better are his variations at the end of the song. Examples: Wanna be startin something, Thriller, Billie Jean. The song starts to REALLY rock AFTER the normal verse chorus bridge part (he developed this even more on Bad and later albums but it's already very present on Thriller). Apart from this: Of course a killer album. I personally like Bad better (less filler tracks) but you can't give this one less than five stars. The Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean hattrick is insane. But also Human Nature is one of my favourites (I recently found out that it was composed by Toto).

Best ever

The biggest album of all time. This transformed so much in pop music, and spawned more hits than any other album, although I wouldn’t say every song is a classic. The Girl is Mine is underwhelming for what could have been a superstar collaboration. But Billie Jean is one of the greatest songs of the decade. Human Nature is underrated. And so much else here was instantly iconic.

it's Thriller. what more do you want me to say lmao
