Dire Straits
Dire StraitsI have always loved Sultans of Swing but this was the first time I'd really thought about why. Dire Straits has a way of making the guitar interact with the vocals that is really unique.

I feel like a lot of people are overly critical of Coldplay, more so than they need to be. These seem to be the same people I get into arguments with about the importance of pop music. Anyway, this album reminds me of a very specific time in my life so I can't help but like it.
Before I give my thoughts I want to honor the fact that jazz music was traditionally a black musical style that some white people liked and became famous with in places that many black musicians were not allowed to go. That being said- I really like this Jazz album- I was very productive listening to it because jazz piano is my favorite.
This is the first album that I don't know either the album or the artist and I'm pretty glad for that. I have a hard time listening to this album because it's a British white guy appropriating musical styles from South Africa, Central and South America, and hip hop. The Wikipedia notes mention that it was influential in making hip hop popular in the UK. It's not even that great a representation of any of those styles. It's pretty difficult to listen to a lot of these albums with a musical appreciation and NOT think these things. I didn't even make it through the whole album I was so annoyed.
I don't need to listen to this album (for the 5 millionth time) to give it 5 stars. Every song is a winner.
I love The Rolling Stones even if I cannot look at Mick Jagger :).
Not my favorite Bowie album but I do appreciate its inventiveness and I think if it I wasnt already in love with Bowie's other work I would probably like it more. I knew sound and vision but not any other song. I thought this might be one of the albums he worked with Brian Eno on and I'm right! It's the first one. I believe they used some of Enos Oblique Strategies to develop the songs.
I knew a lot more of these songs that I thought I would. This is one of those bands that I've heard the name a lot but would never be able to name a song by them. Favorite so far (I know we have a long way to go).
I was a little skeptical of this album when I read that it received much of this acclaim a few years after Jeff Buckley died. I'm still kind of skeptical. It's a great album, and I like several songs on the track list but I'm not sure about it's inclusion on this list. The songs are beautiful and the covers are interesting interpretations of originals, but there is nothing revolutionary to me about this album. I will say that I do enjoy the variety of musical styles that it represents. maybe that's why it is included.
Finally a female vocalist! Though I'm not super blown away by this album. I've heard of the band before but not specifically listened to them. Because I heard the Sneaker Pimps first that's all I can think of when I listen to the album.
I love The Clash. Despite a lot of the songs on this album having similar compositions, if you dig into the lyrics they are pretty interesting/entertaining. And they are usually pretty fun to listen to as well.
I like this album. I had only heard 1-2 songs off it before listening.
I think this album was Ok, but I was pretty bored. I might like it more after multiple listens

I love Theloniois Monk.
I like Elvis but he's not my favorite from the era and this album doesn't have many of my favorite songs on it.
A whole album of Van Halen is.....a lot of Van Halen
I liked the music but the talk-sing was making me anxious when I listened to this and I had to turn it off. Maybe I'll give it another go another time.
Everything is everything.
This album reminds me of my parents.
This album reminds me of college. It's very easy to listen to even if it's not musically revolutionary.
I don't need to listen to this album (for the 5 millionth time) to give it 5 stars. Every song is a winner.
I'm not a huge fan of live albums but this one was pretty good.
Before I give my thoughts I want to honor the fact that jazz music was traditionally a black musical style that some white people liked and became famous with in places that many black musicians were not allowed to go. That being said- I really like this Jazz album- I was very productive listening to it because jazz piano is my favorite.
I have a few songs from this that bring back memories but as an album it's not my favorite
The cure provides good background music, but I wasn't blown away by this album.
This was definitely easy listening. I have heard a lot about Steely Dan but never really taken the time to listen, I could listen to them some more.
I love a few of the songs on this album but not all of them. Mostly nostalgia...
I hadn't heard of this band and I can see how they might have influenced a lot of other bands I like. This one probably needs a few listens to get into but was entertaining to start.
I have always loved Sultans of Swing but this was the first time I'd really thought about why. Dire Straits has a way of making the guitar interact with the vocals that is really unique.
I hadn't heard of this band before (at least I don't think so) but I was pleasantly surprised to hear Rod Stewart's voice in the opening song. I don't know that this album rocked my world but it was definitely easy enough to listen to.
I already liked this album. The Pixies are such a unique band IMO and in this album they show that's possible to showcase a variety of musical talents and styles and still put out a cohesive album.
I remember hearing Cypress Hill a lot on the radio and I don't think I appreciated them at the time. I'm glad to have an opportunity to listen to them as an adult when I have a great appreciation for rap music
I'm really glad I listened to this. I have to come back to it to digest it some more.
I knew this album and forgot I knew it. I listen to the first track pretty often on a playlist I like. I've heard the 2nd song a lot. I finally listened to the whole album sometime last year and really like it.
This is not my favorite Beatles album but it does demonstrate the diversity of their artistic talent and how musical styles from other cultures can be incorporated but maybe not appropriated?
I feel like I've probably heard these songs again but I don't know for sure. I didn't know what to expect when I read the title and artist but I was pleasantly surprised!
I think this is one of those bands that what you hear on the radio is probably enough.
I still have a hard time sitting and listening to rap because the words are a lot like poetry so I always feel like I need to read along. What I picked up from this I liked.
I've heard a lot about Frank Ocean but I haven't listened to their music much. He does have a nice voice but I wasn't blown away.
I'm not even sure what I'm listening to. I like his voice but not a big fan of the lyrics
This album was fine. It didn't really blow me away but I could listen to it again.
This was OK. Not my favorite music style consistently. Some songs were better than others
I know a lot of these songs on their own but hadn't listened to them as an album. I can see how this would stand out on the 1001 albums list.
I've heard about this band a lot and while some of the songs on this album were enjoyable it wasn't my favorite. I can see how they might have been an influence for other bands that I like though.
This was easy to listen to. I have friends that might be upset by the fact that Bob Dylan isn't my favorite music artist. I have a feeling if I sat with his lyrics more I'd really enjoy most of his song writing but I haven't done that yet.
While I appreciate what PJ Harvey has done for female musicians, it's not my favorite type of music to listen to on an album. I'd probably like this more live.
Oh wow. I've always liked Led Zeppelin but I think I've only actively listened to what has come up on the radio or on a playlist for classic rock. I don't think I've ever listened to a whole album. If I would have listened to this as a teenager it would have absolutely blown my mind. I really like it as an adult who knows I like this type of music.
I love Soundgarden and this is the album I love the most.
I was today years old when I discovered that Free Jazz is a thing and today years old when I discovered that I am not a fan.
I think I've heard a lot of songs from the album but have never listened to the album. A lot of the songs sound the same to me after a while but I like them.
I think I liked this one a little better than the last one but I like them both.
There are a lot of things I like about Tom Waits but his voice is too gritty for my musical taste. There is one song on this album where he doesn't use his gritty voice- I wish he would do that more.
I'm mostly only familiar with The Verve because of bittersweet symphony, a song that I really love. I'm sure I've listened to the album that song was on before but I haven't listened to their other music much. It's right up my ally.
I am not normally a Radiohead fan. With the exception of Pablo Honey I have a hard time sitting through one of their songs, let alone a full album. I will say that thought I did sit through this whole album and I I liked it more than I normally do.
I dont normally like live albums and it took me a minute to get the right version of this one. I know all these songs and I think the live versions were the originals I heard. So I agree with this album being on the list.
I've heard the name Bobby Womack but can't say that I could name a song. I really enjoyed listening to this album.
I generally like Miles Davis but this was a little too avant- garde for my tastes. I could see liking it as background for a screenplay or something.
I've heard this album and most of the songs before. It's not my favorite Beatles album but I like it.
I liked listening to this album. It was accessible but it didn't really blow me away on first run through. I think I'll have to come back to it to listen a few times.
I like the go gos
I can see how this is on this list. It's not my favorite style of music but I did enjoy some of the lyrics.
This band reminds me a lot of the Rolling stones but maybe the band and the lyrics aren't as controversial? They have that 70's rock/blues thing going though I'm not sure if there is anything totally exceptional about this album. Maybe it's here because Mick Jagger thought they were better than the Rolling Stones?
Really? I thought maybe I was just sick of the one song from this album I always heard on that radio but it turns out the whole album sounds like that one song and I don't really care for it.
I really like some of the songs on Tusk, but as an album it's not my favorite FM album. It feels like there is a lot of filler here in between the hits. I do appreciate it for it's place in the Fleetwood Mac story.
This middle finger to the patriarchy is just perfect. It's fun to give this a good listen as an adult with adult feelings. I felt the emotions of the album as a 12 year old but I understand the lyrics better as an adult.
Except for one song from this album I was unfamiliar. Despite that every song made me think of another song I have heard but couldn't name. That tells me that perhaps a lot of people have sampled from this album? Anyway, I liked it.
I really like the Talking Heads and know they've had a lot of influence on other bands that came about later. I don't know if this is their first album but I think it's pretty early so I can see how this would be completely different than a lot of other stuff that was going on at the time.
I know about Badly Drawn Boy from the About a Boy soundtrack- which I listened to pretty religiously for a while after I found it in a used CD store :). I hadn't heard this album but I like it too.
This was fun to listen to.
Wow, this album is all over the place and also somehow ...not. I like it.
Elvis Costello is one of those artists that I have a hard time getting into or understanding what the big deal is. I will say that this album had a few songs I could see myself liking after a few listens but I'm still not really sure what the big deal is.
This type of music is kind of on the borderline of my musical tastes so it wasn't really my favorite.
I really like Blondie. Their lyrics straddle that line between playful, serious, and contemporary commentary. I also think it sounds like they're having a lot of fun when they're making their music. This album has no filler and is a great one.
I like house music but it's not my favorite to listen to in album form. I like Underworld but I've never listened to a whole album by them. This album was good background music, though I would say it's my favorite :)
I like Neil Young.
I have never listened to The Wall all the way through. I'm very familiar with a lot of the songs from the album but I haven't listened to them in their intended form- all together. While these songs aren't my favorite Pink Floyd songs I think this album has rightly earned its place as one of the best concept albums. The rock opera quality really shines through with visual qualities to the music with an effect where you really feel like your moving through the main characters life just by listening to the songs.
I like Randy Newman. He's not my favorite but it's easy to listen to.
This isn't my favorite type of music but I liked it for what it was. I think other bands are similar that I like more but there are also ones that I like less.
I like the Smiths when I listen to their songs on their own. The song writing on this album is interesting but it wasn't my favorite album.
I don't usually like live albums and Jerry Lee Lewis is of dubious character, but this album has a lot of great hits that I grew up with and they're good recordings. It's fun to hear them live.
This wasn't what I thought it would be and I think the title of the album "Drunk" seems appropriate. The song writing is ridiculous but also hilarious and somehow it remains musically interesting and engaging. I like the diversity of this bands musical style.
This album is interesting- I like how the artist is teaching you how to listen to the music. Maybe it's here because it was the first to reach a broader audience?
I liked this album because it was easy to listen to but it didn't blow me away.
I have heard a number of songs from this album but never listened to the whole album start to finish. I like how the Black Keys draw on classic rock and blues styles but bring something new to the table.
I'd never really listened to the difference between Tom Petty's solo albums and the Heartbreakers albums. Listening to this one I think I like his solo stuff better though there isn't a substantial difference. The only song on this album I really liked was American Girl.
I really wanted to like this album but I was kind of bored.
I know the cover art for this is pretty famous but it's not my favorite Bowie album.
I really like the eclectic style of this music.
This is one of the albums I think of when I think of how present day rap was defined. I remember when I was younger we called it gangster rap but I just read something about how N.W.A. referred to it as "reality rap" instead and my adult mind agrees with that description more. This is the type of album that makes me appreciate the creativity that goes into producing a rap song. It's not my go-to genre of music but I have so much admiration for this craft.
I feel like a lot of people are overly critical of Coldplay, more so than they need to be. These seem to be the same people I get into arguments with about the importance of pop music. Anyway, this album reminds me of a very specific time in my life so I can't help but like it.
I hadn't ever heard of this band but from the notes it sounds like that's not surprising. The album definitely holds up!
Devo is weird but I like it.
I'm not really a fan of Jethro Tull
I wasn't sure I liked this album at first but it has some really delightful moments and I think that if I listened to it more I would get into it. I can see how this artist might have contributed to the musical styles of artists I listen to regularly today.
I was surprised by the number of songs on this album that I didn't know. I obviously like the ones I know and think those songs carry this album's place on the list.
I liked this one better than the last Bob Dylan album.
Lorde is very good at writing catchy songs that also have substantive lyrics.
