Planet Rock: The Album
Afrika Bambaataadisregarding any allegations brought towards afrika, this album is monstrously boring it reeks of all the boring 80s sounds that make me want to fall asleep. i have much better music to listen to instead.
disregarding any allegations brought towards afrika, this album is monstrously boring it reeks of all the boring 80s sounds that make me want to fall asleep. i have much better music to listen to instead.
everlasting light was nice but after that everything is so amazingly similar that it becomes the same song for the next 50 minutes. this would be awesome if it actually did anything during those 50 minutes but alas it doesn't
zombie is a really good track, the rest is pretty good too but it's the obvious highlight
takes some time to get going but it eventually gets there, couple boring songs but also a good few good ones to go with them, overall it is good but i have reservations
i've obviously listened to sympathy for the devil and that's a banger, then there's 3 mid tracks in a row but it picks back up at the end of the a-side this is a pretty easy 7/10 but the rather mediocre half of the a-side prevent any higher
outrageously boring i hate the vocalist and orchestral arrangements of these songs
pretty good A-side, pretty bad B-side, overall it's ok-ish. all the nasties being pretty good prevented me from giving this a 5/10 instead of a 6/10 but i do not want to listen to any of the other B-side songs again if i can help it
a very middling album with not much substance, which given it is britpop that makes sense
exceptional, solo dancer was the main track i remembered but it's easily the worst on the record, track B and the medley are both outrageously good, i'll hand this over a 5 for this site but for me personally it's a 4.5/5
lust for life is a good track, the rest can be summed up as "this is fine but not particularly interesting to me". this includes the passenger, not sure why that gets the hype it does
this was Not Good, which stinks cause it sounds like ms dynamite can do much better than this, but this is some miserable songwriting with such a bland sound that i couldn't make it very far into the album before i decided i had better things to listen to
overall decent country but nothing i thought was really special, enjoyed the pain of loving you and wildflowers
absolutely has the sound of a 60s album, but for once it works in its favor with some really good songs like goin' back, draft morning, and change is now. nothing particularly weak too (except maybe dolphins smile).
it's what's going on, duh it's good. obvious picks are the opener and closer, but it's generally pretty solid throughout.
the only who album i know is who's next, and then also "who are you" from the album of the same name. surprised me seeing how popular the title track from this is. but this is pretty nice, good covers.
i have listened to this album previously, first time this has happened so far. how to disappear completely is outrageously amazing, optimistic is really good, rest is also good. outstanding album overall, do not understand any of its negative initial reception given the existence of how to disappear. though granted it took me many listens to hold an opinion so high of this album.
this is the same, relatively interesting but not really, song 15 times. it sounds nice but that is all i can say, was very disappointed.
definitely a punk rock album, reminds me of dead kennedys. it's well done, was fond of "in this house i call home" in particular but it's generally a consistent record.
i don't get this one... it's nice and i see why people like it but for me it just doesn't enthrall me at all. listened to this a bit before as well, had the same feelings. good performances all around, just isn't for me.
excellent, some amazing songs in "also frightened", "summertime clothes", and "bluish", but it's overall really good
it's fine, it's ac/dc odds are you've listened to a song or two from this album whether you wanted to or not. maybe it's not the most interesting thing in the world but nothing much to hate here.
really good!! "free man in paris" is definitely the highlight but the entire album is consistent and great. pretty multifaceted as well. "twisted" is hilarious.
i like reggae so i'm a little biased here, but this is an overall groove. good reggae.
it's ok? "ironic" is a good song as it's always been but there's a lot of uninteresting tracks. thankfully there's enough good songs to keep it afloat though.
handful of really good songs, including the longer tracks (break you off & water), but also plenty of somewhat dull songs. i could've went my whole life without hearing "pussy galore" but unfortunately that's how the cookie crumbled today.
nice country rock, worth a listen if that's your deal. "hotel arizona" and "sunken treasure" are both great, rest was a little samey but differentiable enough.
rather uninteresting compared to the album they made after this which was pretty enjoyable. couple decent tracks in the intro and "thoughts and words" but the rest is samey and forgettable.
very boring unfortunately, "blitzkrieg bop" brought back very old memories of it getting played a bunch on the car radio so nostalgia places that song a peg above the rest of them. however they are all extremely similar and boring, and i'm glad punk rock got much better than this.
have listened to a few tracks from this before, namely "i zimbra" which i'm a fan of. rest of the album holds up to the same standard too which is good to hear, other highlights included "mind", "life during wartime", and "heaven".
please note that i don't really like the beach boys, so i already went into this having the expectation i wasn't going to enjoy it. i didn't really enjoy it, the only song i cared for was "long promised road" but everything else just did nothing for me. i think i get what other people like in this group but it isn't for me at all.
listened directly after an album i didn't like and this was a breath of fresh air, never listened to any neil young before. title track, "southern man", "when you dance i can really love", and "i believe in you" are great and the rest is pretty good too. i'd give this a 3.5/5 but i can't give half stars so i'll round it up since it's quite enjoyable and it might just grow on me
title track is extremely good, but the whole album is laced with john grant's beautiful voice. half of the album is a little samey due to pop sensibility, but the other half is able to stay extremely vibrant with the likes of "tc and honeybear", "it's easier", "jesus hates faggots", and again the very good title track. i personally think this is a 3.5/5 but i can't give half stars, and unfortunately don't think it quite manages a 4, so 3 it will have to get. but definitely worth your time if folk pop is your deal, or if you're a fan of lyrically focused stuff.
strongly reminded of rush, nothing that jumped out at me as amazing but a generally good record that i can see someone really loving. that someone may not be me but i still like it.
never heard this before but i still feel biased; this is exactly my kind of music. lovely grooves and lovely voices, some songwriting misses (namely long black veil) but usually hits like on the weight. hadn't listened to that song but it's *that* popular??? i get why, it's a good track, but still. that song along with "caledonia mission" and "i shall be released" are my favorites here, but it's overall very good and very pleasant.
such amazingly strong vocal performances that anything less than a 4/5 would be criminal. move over, cry baby, and me and bobby mcgee deserve all the praise they get, they're great. also mercedes benz was funny.
first few tracks are a decent groove, namely "papa won't leave you, henry" and "straight to you" but christina the astonishing and onward feel like a severe drop-off in quality for me, lacks a lot of strength. still decent and mostly worth listening to but you can jump ship after the a-side. though the progression on "when i first came to town" is decently interesting.
what a lovely album. "silver soul", "norway", "10 mile stereo", and "take care" are all incredible, not to mention "zebra" and "lover of mine".
good disco, the popular tracks (le freak and i want you love) are the best ones, the rest aren't too shabby either, i specifically like happy man, but those 2 are the big ones.
duh it's a 5/5 but i think it's genuinely incredible that bowie can make such amazing music from as early as the late 60s to his death in 2016. from the majesty and beauty of space oddity to the grand but desperate and almost despondent lazarus, there's only a handful of misses. across 5 decades. it's amazing. if i have to pick tracks then the title track, lazarus, and girl loves me. the whole thing is beautiful though.
i've gotten 2 albums in a row i've already listened to before, and luckily both of them are unbelievable amazing pieces of music (the previous was blackstar by david bowie). the title track alone makes this whole album worth it but not mentioning "i think i'm in love", "stay with me", "no god only religion", "cool waves", and "cop shoot cop..." is criminal, as those songs are just as unbelievable. one of my favorite albums i've listened to recently
first 2 songs were great but the rest was failed to stand out too much. was still good but nothing compared to the first 2 tracks.
very nice, i've wanted to listen to some leonard cohen since before this came on my 1001 and this was quite good. very big fan of "on the level", along with "traveling light".
this specific kind of post-punk, similar to joy division and such, doesn't so anything for me. it's something that i don't know if i'll ever get, even if i can understand that there's a lot of skill and and great things within the music. i just don't enjoy it.
pretty good, great melodies and it sounds great, i'm hardly convinced this album is 50 years old as of writing. however i think i'd rather listen to the likes of "thick as a brick" if i wanted a super long prog rock song.
dolly parton is always wonderful, i've only listened to the very popular "jolene" and the collaboration album "trio" before this but this is very good. the title track, "my blue tears", and "early morning breeze" are my favorites.
due to being young i hold a prejudice against the sound of some 60s albums being very swallowed up, but this does a good job of pushing past that regardless and sounding pretty good. though i mostly only like half of the album, namely "dropout boogie", "i'm glad", and "autumn's child".
the A-side was excellent, "sweet thing" specifically along with the title track, but i found the b-side to be a little bit lacking. still overall quite good but i'd likely only listen to the a-side again.
it's fine, another one of those post-punk gothic albums that don't do anything for me. it's at least more listenable than most of them though.
dark music still doesn't appeal to me too much, but 3 tracks here were pretty good: "never let me down again", "strangelove", and "pimpf". rest ranged from good to fine enough, but those 3 were pretty nice. i think violator is in 1001 too so maybe i'll like that one more.
i actively enjoy swing so i enjoy a lot of this, specifically the first and second medleys. does eventually get same-y after a while though.
how nostalgic, i used to listen to this album all the time who knows how long ago. "walking on the moon" is just as good as i remember it being, and "no time at all" is way better than i remembered it being. everything else is also quite good!
typical jimi hendrix banger, i like electric ladyland more but this is a great album
pretty enjoyable. the big song "paper planes" that everyone knows i've never thought was a big banger, but i did enjoy "jimmy" and "XR2".
title track is great but the rest fluctuates. some of this just plain isn't for me but some of this is really good.
it's nice near the start but the sheer sound of 80s music starts to take over as it progresses in a bad way. the last song is good though.
somewhat boring b-side for me, i do understand the people that find that kind of thing very pretty and everything but i do not care for it myself. meanwhile, the a-side has running up that hill and the big sky, so it's not all bad. somehow "hello earth" reminded me of the spirit of eden by talk talk in that it does almost nothing for most of its runtime
"shadowboxer" and "the first taste" are excellent, the rest is quite good too. another fiona apple banger. though i guess this is her first album.
it's Kinda Good it's a bit underground you know...... not many people have heard of it...... (this is dripping with sarcasm)
blue suede shoes is nostalgic but early rock and roll isn't really all that good for the most part. there's some good stuff! but elvis' debut isn't one of them.
i've listened to this one previously. the first half or so is great, from packt like sardines to knives out. after knives out it is not very good, and not really worth bothering listening to. but that first stretch is good!
almost doesn't sound like a 60s album, and for that alone it can be considered impressive. there's some serious highlights like "complication" and "monk time" as well, but it overall kinda washes over me.
ahhh, this did not disappoint me in the least. i listened to "you want it darker" prior to this, and it was great, so an album right at the start of his career peaked my interest and it's even better! "suzanne", "master song", "so long, marianne", and lest we forget "one of us cannot be wrong"! very excellent, my opinion of this might rise over time but for here it'll get a 4/5.
listened to this before but remembered nothing except "cemetry gates" going crazy (it still did) and not liking "there is a light that never goes out" (i was crazy, it's the best thing on the album). the rest that i didn't remember wasn't worth remembering. vacuous, showy playing that can describe the rest of the 80s just as well. but *dang* those 2 songs are worth it.
i've heard different versions of "jumpin' jack flash" before, is this the original? goes extremely hard still. a little bit long for what it wants to do, "sagar (the ocean)" especially doesn't need to be 13 minutes long. but there's some really nice stuff here too, so it evens out enough.
it's nice? it's disco from earth wind and fire, they can't exactly fuck it up, but outside of sounding nice there's nothing more than that to me.
pretty samey, back to black is definitely better. nothing stood out to me but if i wanted to turn my brain off and listen to something pleasant this wouldn't be a horrible choice.
the track "meaningless movements" is a good title since it describes a lot of this album pretty good: meaningless. showy, technical playing with nothing behind them. if that's your thing then have at it but i find it very boring.
disregarding any allegations brought towards afrika, this album is monstrously boring it reeks of all the boring 80s sounds that make me want to fall asleep. i have much better music to listen to instead.
this was my 68th album from 1001, most insane disappointment. it's not too shabby, i typically enjoy industrial stuff. the hit single "jesus built my hotrod" has a pretty funny story behind it i learned while trying to make sense of what the fuck the singer was talking about.
have heard this previously. a lot of this is great but i really wish kanye just. talked less. "runaway" is a good example, that song is great but both his verse and the guest verse i could *really* do without. the 3 minute long outro doesn't do it any favors. i listened to some of "the college dropout" recently and it was miles better than anything on here.
another album i've heard before, i know several people who heavily bash this album and i don't really get why. some of the songs here are so unbelievably *strong*, especially "i want you to love me", the title track, and "for her". so much to love here. though there's a small little lull in the middle for me.
pretty cool, i'm a sucker for percussion and this has some excellent percussion. may not turn my world upside down but i enjoy it.
title track lives up to the hype, the rest is cool but not as good
i'm Such a sucker for country. very concept album so it's hard to pick out specific amazing tracks but it's overall great and worth your time if country is your deal
a friend described this one as disney music and yeah they're kinda right. "holes" and "the funny bird" are worth it but i could live without a lot of the rest.
this really has got the "popular music" vibe to it huh. very much not a fan of that vibe myself, bores me to tears. she does have a really nice voice though, so even if the songwriting and general sound does nothing i won't give it a 1
"every breath you take" deserves its playcount, but it's not the only track worth listening to here! overall it's really solid, it's a shame the new wave sound had to get stuck in the 80s of all decades. at least there's some good music that came out of it, this being one of those.
have heard this one before. "get innocuous", "all my friends", and "new york i love you but you're bringing me down" by themselves make this album worth it, but it's all around really good and absolutely worth a look.
wow this album sure is 70 minutes long. do you really need this to be 70 minutes? that first song was pretty good but then they just continued to do the first song but worse. not even the really popular song "black hole sun" that i have somehow not heard before (well i think i kinda recognized it) could save it for me. there's enough good noises from stuff like the first song to save this from getting a 1.
half of this album goes extremely hard (\"vienna\", \"moving out\", and \"scenes from an italian restaurant\" especially), and the rest is exceptionally mediocre. nostalgic album for me though.
mostly checked out from this one, some parts are cool but i could live. could do a lot worse though
pretty nice. "faith / void" doesn't need to be 9 minutes long and "my friend" felt forgettable, but "jim cain" and "all thoughts are prey to some beast" are really good
this album defies all my logic it has such cool beats and such a good rapper but i guess it must be the songwriting that makes it feel so boring to me. that or it's because it was made during the 1980s which automatically makes the sound worse.
what an icon of culture, even me who lives under a rock away from popular music is well aware of this whole album. though, i only really care about the title track, "boulevard of broken dreams", and "wake me up when september ends". the rest ranges from boring at best to making me forget that i like long songs at worst.
music where the main selling point is that it sounds amazing is never something that really appeals to me, but holy hell i've gotta admit aretha franklin knows how to do it. this sounds so *good*! "ain't no way" is what convinced me to give it a 4 instead of a 3, but if amazing sounding soul is what you like then look no further
truly is Cool Jazz which unfortunately isn't the most interesting music to me, but i mean. it is jazz. if you like some Cool Jazz then yeah miles davis has you covered but i like his fusion stuff much more
so it's THIS album! never knew where these big hits like "girls just wanna have fun" were from but now i do (i live under a rock). cool album i like the when you were mine cover and "time after time"
"the ocean" is really friggin good go give that one a spin. really pleased overall with this album! i liked the album cover, however i decided to keep my expectations low. but even if i raised them high this still would've matched them. well worth your time.
"highway star" is pretty good but outside of that it's basically just that song but worse for the next 30 minutes. i guess the funny riff on smoke on the water is cool. not really my groove.
listen to a different pink floyd album or just listen to the popular singles from this one. pink floyd's previous 3 albums ("dark side of the moon", "wish you were here", and "animals") might be the best 3 album run in music. it's not a 4 album run because this album is very boring. it's a cool concept album, and that part is fun to talk about, but there are 3 songs that are any good on it ("another brick in the wall pt. 2", "hey you", and "comfortably numb". also "the trial" in my opinion, i wish the rest of concept was as cool as that one...). the rest isn't very interesting unfortunately.
springsteen wailing into the microphone on "something in the night" is more enjoyable than it feels it should be. the guitar on "the promised land" goes pretty hard but otherwise i had hoped for better.
it is illmatic
"killer queen" is still a pretty good single but overall not really all that interesting. queen isn't much of an albums band and more of a singles band, i think. they have some really good singles though, gotta give them that
outside of abbey road and a couple specific songs i don't really care at all about the beatles. rather boring. you can do much better within the 60s or in any other decade.
