Stand!
Sly & The Family StoneEssential in every way. Sly belongs on the Mt Rushmore of funk
Essential in every way. Sly belongs on the Mt Rushmore of funk
This was a relisten. Still great lyrically and production-wise, but man the skits are a lot.
Great album. Still like Love Below more, butSpeakerboxxx is so solid
More than Hallelujah plus more songs. Echoes of anthemic U2 and early Pearl Jam. Definite 90s production sensibilities though
think this where the Chili Peppers started the slide into dad rock/adult contemporary. The funky song to ballad ratio is off compared to other albums, like they fell into the Under the Bridge aesthetic. The singles are damn catchy though. And I recognize that we all mellow as we age; God knows I have. But this is not the dangerous Peppers of earlier days
Great all the way through. Still rocks. Could easily be a greatest hits album.
Great pop music. Very atmospheric. Better than expected.
How can the singles be so good and the rest of the album so terrible?
I still think this was the last great Aerosmith album. Wore out the tape in 1989. Still rocks. That said, some of these songs, despite being deeply embedded in my memories, are skippable. I think that Aerosmith at their best is sleazy and cheesy. And very self-aware.
So heavy and bluesy and dark. Also so much space in the mix. I love Sabbath.
Stevie Wonder owned the 70s. This is exhibit A
I feel like Stan Gets drove the popularity of samba almost singlehandedly. This was pleasant, non threatening. Not experimental jazz, something that has a time and place in the early 60s. I think Gilberto/Getz is better though
Four stars only because I know Daydream Nation is the next album they made
Surprisingly better than I remembered. And I heard this album a LOT when it came out. I have a lot of sympathy for Courtney. She got a bad rap for so many reasons, this albums sheen and popiness included. I appreciate what they were found a lot more now looking back.
Compton's in the house! I think many of today's listeners maybe forget that it's supposed to be offensive. This is music to make your parents furious.
Classic and vital in every way. This album made the 90s possible.
I like it, but it's not unforgettable
Too British? Not sure why this didn't click for me
Another selection of pre-grunge alternative weirdness. I love this album and have since it came out.
Ultimate driving music for chooglin' down the highway
Weird and wonderful as usual for the Talking Heads
Repetitive, but I think that's kind of the point. I see the cues from classical a bit as far as setting a theme forth and developing it. Lush 3-1 still a banger.
Good Tribe album. A little silly in spots, and not as good as Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, but a good listen.
This is not for me. Maybe you had to be there?
Very 90s, but there are other bands I would rather listen to
I didn't get this album when it came out. I knew it was genius, but didn't understand why. Looking back decades later, it's influence on music after it is obvious and huge. I still don't get it though. I always liked Amnesiac and OK Computer more.
Is the Who cheesy? I don't think they aged as well as some. For such a loud band, they have a lot of acoustic
I liked it, this is the first album I had no context for. Different but had a great sound
Fun and rocking time. Jeff Beck makes this a great album and it makes me want to lisren to more from him. Of the 3 Yardbird guitarists, I am least familiar with his work.
The longer this album went on, the less I liked it. Rock moved so fast that he was really left behind I guess. Like he skipped the dad rock phase of his career. Poor Elvis. I did like the band though as well as Suspicious Minds of course.
Love reggae, love Bob Marley. This is classic
Not crazy about this. Starting to think I just don't like techno
This one rocked. Girl pink from the early days, loved the instrumentation and the kick ass attitude. Glad to have discovered it!
Not as good in retrospect as some of the other return to rock of the early 2000s. Not the Strokes or White Stripes, but akin to maybe Jet?
Jazzier than expected
Inoffensive.
When's they're good, it's SO good. When they are overly sappy, they are still ok.
Defiantly cheerful and sunny. Early 80s UK must have been a strange place
I have always meant to check out Mercury Rev. They were known for making strange noises, but I was surprised how melodic they actually were. Very cheerful psychedelic. Maybe somewhere on the spectrum of the Flaming Lips and the Polyphonic Spree. Very interesting, and not what I expected
Bored, but not hatred
I think people either love Bowie or don't get it. I get it. This is awesome, including the more ambient soundscape stuff. Very 70s Bowie
I don't think I can separate this objectively from the time in my life when I listened to it originally. Such a great album
Classic in every way. Maybe the strings were a little overdone on There's A World and A Man Needs A Maid, but I can forgive the indulgence. Hard to be objective when it's been in my listening rotation 30+ years.
Essential in every way. Sly belongs on the Mt Rushmore of funk
This was a fun surprise. Had no familiarity with it, but this was a cool blend of retro music with electronic beats.
No surprise here; I still love this album. Has held up better than a lot of 90s music to my ears
More frantic than Tim, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I appreciate the Replacements more as I've gotten older
Important and genius.
I was 10 when this came out. This was the album that got me into Metallica
Of course
Good loud dumb rock and roll
My favorite Doors album
Not bad, kind of a Burt Bacharach feel to some of it maybe?
Just wow. This was the album of his I was least familiar with from this era. Very thoughtful and shows true evolution. And still quite funky
This one is already heard a thousand times. Rock 101.
Starting to think I don't like techno or EDM. People say Brown Paper Bag was the best track and it was initially interesting but went on a long time without doing anything else to develop. And it has no soul or funkiness. Chalk this one up as British in a bad way.
Surprisingly nice.
I really liked this. Not sure how I missed it back then
Classic
I know I'm supposed to like Springsteen but he always seems so corny and mawkish
I can't tell if Steely Dan is less clever than they think they are or if it's me
Two stars plus 1 for Tom Sawyer. Rush is so over the top
Songs for moping about a boy who ignores you
