This is insanely joyous

Greetings From L.A. by Tim Buckley

Honestly made me realize why they call it “rock ‘n roll” since that’s certainly what this album does.

Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jul 07 2024

I liked this much more than I expected to.

Raw Like Sushi by Neneh Cherry

Charming nostalgic romp through 80s multicultural optimism. Interesting that she’s Swedish given how much it sounds like NYC but then the monoculture of the times, from Madonna to Fame to Paula Abdul that influenced the sound, made this more an assemblage and a performance of all those identities. Some fun songs. I was between a 2 and a 3 and ultimately went with 2 but keep in mind 2 isn’t bad, and generally I liked it but probably wouldn’t play it again.

Lam Toro by Baaba Maal

Ok “Minuit” got me

Play by Moby

Loved this album unironically when it came out. I knew it was uncool but didn’t care, it was fun as hell and it still is.

Moon Safari by Air
Apr 20 2026

So gorgeous. Some minor filler but the bangers bang.

Larks' Tongues In Aspic by King Crimson
Apr 22 2026

Some nice moments but felt a bit too exploratory without fully finding itself. May just be a bias against prog (despite my love of Rush). Musicianship is phenomenal tho.

Foxbase Alpha by Saint Etienne
Apr 23 2026

Pretty, sometimes too pretty, but was good for flow state while running

Surfer Rosa by Pixies
Apr 24 2026

So fun. Every song is hilarious and brilliant in its own way. The interludes also add up to a kind of collage art. Paved the way for Pavement, no pun intended. One of the interesting effects of doing this is that it forces comparison, and since I listened to the King Crimson album two days ago I’m realizing I prefer stuff that isn’t so forward about its craft and both allows and promotes mistakes and flaws as part of the process. Which perhaps says something about me but that’s for a different forum.

Protection by Massive Attack
Apr 26 2026

Love this album. At times it feels just slightly thin for a 5, and the closing cover of Light My Fire is genuinely terrible, but man there are some gorgeous moments throughout.

Elastica by Elastica
Apr 27 2026

It’s fine but we have Blur and Pixies at home.

Cool album, good to dance to, a bit repetitive but then I suppose that’s the point. Just noting for reference since I’ve been a bit inconsistent - 1 star - didn’t like it, wouldn’t play it again 2 stars - decent, I liked it but may not necessarily play it again 3 stars - good, I liked it quite a bit and may play it again 4 stars - great, I loved it but may have some uneven aspects 5 stars - brilliant

I know they’re cringe now but I loved this album when it came out and I still do. Though I stopped listening to them after this one.

Rock 'N Soul by Solomon Burke
May 02 2026

Lovely album. And damn this guy could sing.

Gold by Ryan Adams
May 03 2026
Master Of Puppets by Metallica
May 05 2026

Just not my speed, no pun intended. Obviously the musicianship is exceptional (even Lars sounds good) but I had no emotional connection except for Disposable Heroes, which is a great song.

Juju by Siouxsie And The Banshees
May 09 2026
Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
May 10 2026

Mr. Nelson, I owe you apology, I wasn’t really familiar with your game.

Tommy by The Who
May 12 2026

I generally like The Who but I just couldn’t get into this at all.

Harvest by Neil Young

This was a wild one. When she gets swinging it’s really good. When she goes high it can get shrill and almost alarming. Songs often build slowly and then take an interesting turn. I started off thinking this is a 1, then it gradually won me over with its idiosyncratic charms, then it lost me for a bit. It was a fun ride and I’m glad I listened to it, and it’s certainly a compelling historical document of 70s feminist art, but I’m not sure I’d come back to it. Ultimately a 2.5 but I’m trying to stick to the rating system I set earlier.

Green Onions by Booker T. & The MG's
May 16 2026

Goodness, I had no idea it was made out early. Fun funky would let us swing although I can’t imagine playing this intentionally very much. But it’s cool and I can see why it was important for its time.
