An album I've constantly heard about but never actually listened to. I would see it posted almost every day on /mu/. One of the better Progressive Rock albums I've listened to. Definitely better than any Yes or Nektar album I've heard... Might even be better than DSOTM, or maybe I've just listened to that one too many times.
Not quite my pace. But seems like a solid album.
One of the weaker Talking Heads albums in my opinion. Has a some good songs, but the music doesn't carry the same punch as, say, Remain in Light... Which queued up after this album and the vibe was so noticeably different.
Certainly a competent album, but I can’t help but feel like among its contemporaries this album fails to be transgressive enough to hold my attention. I got a little excited by the song English Rose, as it started to add more depth to the albums sound, and it’s a good song, but everything just flattens out after. Just sounds like… how do I say… Brit slop. Like The Clash with no edge.
Very emotional. I enjoyed this.
I definitely didn’t NEED to listen to this before I die, as the book this list is based on suggests. The Doors songs are so hit or miss. Couple decent songs on the album, but I’m fine not listening to this one again.
I've only ever known The Verve from that one song. You know the one. So I was shocked when I heard something by them that wasn't saccharin and annoying. In fact, I quite literally enjoyed it. The last song was incredible. Not bad!!
Some music just wasn't made for me
Ya’ll mind if a white boy get a lil quirky in here?
Yessssss dude.
The simple and raw sound really forces them to be creative with the music, and they do not fail to capitalize. Honestly not every song on here is great, but I feel a 5 is still justified on a personal level
Four libtards from California larping as hicks from the bayou, and it’s never sounded better
THE quintessential pop punk album. Not my favorite by Green Day, but it is in my opinion the most approachable and cohesive album from their raw era.
Fav track: Pulling Teeth
An album with a goal, clearly stated on the album cover: ""...to combine Western and Indian music into a new form... that is melodious and touching"". The problem is, it fails at this in a few different ways... It's mostly either awkward covers of western songs, or just Indian music with a synthesizer meandering around the mix. It just doesn't work... Except once. Track 4, Mamata, truly is a melodious and touching song that blends the two styles into a new form. It's beautiful. If the album were full of songs that hit the mark like this, it would rate very highly for me.
Fav track: Mamata, obviously.
Seriously out of all the great pop albums released in the last decade, this is what we get on the list?
It’s boring, uninventive, low energy slop pop
Fav song: No Body, No Crime because she shouted out Olive Garden and I took my beautiful girlfriend there once and the lasagna was pretty good
I'm a sucker for sleazy 60's music. It's interesting that this is apparently the first album to use the term "psychedelic". This is a great album for seeing the evolution of garage rock and surf rock into what we now call psychedelic rock.
The electric jug was an... interesting choice. I don't think it pays off. But it's solid garage rock album that I'll place right here next to The Stooges.
One of the better doors albums. Still nothing to write home about but it’s an enjoyable listen
Fav song: Riders on the Storm
A good album full of overplayed songs. It’s seriously a shame, I would rate this higher in a vacuum
Bjork is actually an artist I haven't explored yet. This album makes me think I should perhaps start a little earlier in her discography...
I only really knew REM through a few singles, so it was nice to try an album out. I liked it a lot, and the mandolin definitely elevates it, bringing a twinkly edge to the mix
Fav track: Stand, The Wrong Child
I like The Smiths but Im sorry morrissey this one is a lil boring!! It was such a borrissey I started to snorrissey. The morrissey the less I know, right?
Fav track: idk they all sounded the same
My mom used to listen to Elvis Costello before she got hit by a truck. So I guess you could say I have an affinity for him
Solid album full of high energy songs that switch it up quite a bit. You could tell they really enjoyed making this.
I appreciate her for trying to have her own style away from her contemporaries, but I’m just not a fan. I find her way of singing a little cringey and I can’t really explain why
This one hit today. Scramble time at the brewery, I’m multi tasking, I hit the perfect flow state with this shit playing on the PA. It was a 4 star experience for sure
Never hit 5 so fast. Unparalleled vibes.
The closest I ever came to gender dysphoria was listening to this album. Not that I’m trans or anything, but I just remember listening to it for the first time and wanting to do feminine things like lay half off the bed with my arm over my forehead and like cook cloud eggs and hang up string lights and plants in my room
Fav tracks: Heaven or Las Vegas, Cherry Coloured Funk
It’s shit!
Yeah Yeah No
Blues slop
I do not typically like live albums, but this is definitely an exception. A stellar performance, first of all, with new covers and musical guests make this a cut above the rest. Honestly, live albums rarely can replace the quality of the original studio recordings, so where this album shines is in the amount of covers that can stand on their own. The Meat Puppets section is my favorite.
Fav tracks: Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam, The Man Who Sold The World, Plateau, Lake Of Fire
Hip hop from this era really does not age well imo. I get the style was groundbreaking, but from the perspective of someone born almost 10 years after its release, it comes off as cheesy and tacky. Like I would hear it in a nickelodeon special one night after school. And I feel bad, it’s not their fault it was co opted that way. But that’s what happens man.
Fav Track: Hit it Run
BOOOO GET OFF THE STAGE
Good album that unfortunately has to live in the shadow of 36 Chambers
I thought for sure that Van Morrisons eccentric singing would get grating after a while, but was pleasantly surprised. Gets a lil boring towards the end, but it’s front loaded with a few bangers.
Fav track: Moondance
ehh not my tempo sorry!!
Y’all mind if a white boy sing a little patois?
Seriously what the fuck was Sting on
Great album though.
A little hit or miss, but I really liked the faster, funky songs. Also there were a couple moments in the album they did some experimental synth/organ parts that were really interesting
Not my favorite steely dan, but a good steely dan nonetheless
I appreciate that they were pioneers, but they sounds too much like the many bands that came after them, and not as deep as the bands that inspired them.
Fav track: Lonely Planet Boy. The only part of the album where they dropped the rock sound for a more reserved tempo but kept the vulgar vocal performance. Sounds sleazy and romantic. A more unique sound than the rest of the album.
Alternate universe pablo honey era thom yorke where he’s canadian and also sucks
I’ve known about Bob Dylan only through cultural osmosis and the occasional rainy day woman play on our brewery’s jukebox, so when I was finally prompted to listen to a full album today I really didn’t know what to expect.
I’m very impressed by the creativity displayed here. Great storytelling too. I enjoyed this more than I ever thought I would.
Fav tracks: Rainy Day Women, Visions of Johanna, Stuck inside mobile, Leopard skin pill box hat, Just like a woman
Slop. Shit I’d hear at a reasonable volume at Harpoon Larry’s while scarfing a crab cake topped cheeseburger. So fucking bland it’s painful.
0 edge
0 bangers
Didn’t tap a single toe
Didn’t even nod
Had to listen to sixpence none the richer after this to remind myself female led 90’s pop rock bands are valid.
I’m gonna be sick bro
Rubber Soul is, in my opinion, the first Beatles album to truly feel authentic. Not that the previous albums were without good songs, but as a whole album experience, it’s elevated by a certain craftsmanship that wasn’t present before. This album is full of songs that are able to genuinely swoon me. It’s wistful and melancholic.
This, and revolver, stand to me as the beginning of The Beatles golden era.
Fav Tracks: In My Life, Nowhere Man, You Won’t See Me
I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this but I was not disappointed in the least. Genuinely cool music. Very atmospheric, full of ambitious creativity, and each song flows effortlessly in its progression. My only complaint, I suppose, is it’s pretty understated. It doesn’t have those standout moments that define tracks in progressive rock albums. Still solid though
Maybe it’s because I have listened to so much music in my life, but Im really attracted to weird off the wall shit like this because it is patently different. New wave is a great genre because it pushes boundaries. B-52s, Talking Heads, Didjits… It’s certainly not for everyone but I love this shit.
The album itself is great. Very high energy, genuine bangers on this album.
Fav travks: Lava, 52 Girls, Planet Claire
Proto quirk chungus ahh music shrek 2
Fantastic album littered with bangers. About as 80’s as you can get.
Fav Songs: Everybody wants to rule the world, Head over heels, Listen
Probably not the worst Beatles album, but their earlier works, mainly the first 4 albums, all carry similar complaints from me… A couple good songs, and there are moments that were quite innovative at the time for a contemporary pop audience, but it’s few and far between, most songs are covers, and some of them are just a pain to listen to.
Fav tracks: All Ive got to do, All my loving (and they aren’t even that great)
Coming from a big fan of the first two releases, this is a decent Sabbath album. Didn’t innovate too much, and when they did try a different sound it wasn’t that great. Still a solid listen though.
I give him points for trying something different, but every songs a skip!!
Oh you want it darker? okay im gonna mumble monotone the same exact way through every song with some understated boring ass music in the back FUCK leonard cohen
album cover goes hard
Teetered between 2 and 3 stars for me, but will give it a 3 because The Byrds are a wonderful group, and I appreciated that this album has its own defining sound to it. Comes off a little cheesy sounding, but the vocals elevate it quite a bit.
Man Lupe Fiasco really did have 1 good song.
Insufferably bling era temu kanye sounding album. Stellar on a production level, but really suffers from being Lupe Fiasco
What can I say, it’s fucking Metallica
It’s no surprise to me this is one of Kurt Cobains favorite albums. You can hear it in its instrumentation and DIY sensibilities. Maybe I don’t like it as much as he does, but I will say it’s a commendable 90’s indie album.
I like the unique guitar tones on this album, along with the typical soothing singing of neil youngs one of a kind voice. Not as good as rust never sleeps which was served to me last month, but a good album none the less
Bit promising to start, but failed to keep me interested, like, at all.
:(
