This is not for me, this genre of rock never really interested me beyond having some knowledge of the occasional singles that played on the radio.
In my opinion I’m honestly not sure I would call this an essential album and I don’t think I will ever listen to it again.

Spellbound, Arabian Nights, Sin in my Heart, and Night Shift are some of the stand out tracks…Voodoo Dolly is a fantastic closer to the album

From what I read about the history of the making of this album it looks like Garfunkel dodged a bullet here.
Good album, not my favorite or the one of their best in my opinion…it’s great to listen to while driving in the car.

This album is a nice contrast to Psychocandy. A lot less fuzz and noise and somewhat more subtle
April Skies, Happy When it Rains,Down on Me and Fall are some favorites for me
What an amazing voice, most of these songs are great

Great live performance and nice complement to the Live at Folsom album,but the original album is lacking due to editing it down to fit on a single vinyl LP at the time. Wanted Man, Wreck of the Old 97 and Starkville City Jail with Johnny’s banter are some of the highlights…cutting off Folsom Prison halfway through the song at the very end was not great.
This would’ve been five stars if I was listening to the remastered fully restored cut of this performance. Which I highly recommend after listening to the original
This is mostly pretty boring, I mildly liked two songs off this…one them because it was under 2 minutes and had a more industrial sound the other I’ve already almost forgotten about.
Great singles, stronger second half, some fun songs, second James Brown cover on the album and Bo Diddley’s- I’m a Man -come across as trying too hard to impersonate the artists rather than doing an original interpretation of these songs.
Solid debut
Pleasantly surprised how much I liked this album. More variety than I was expecting, the studio banter between songs was great.
Definitely too long at over 2 hours but I finished it unlike some albums on this list that we under an hour.
Not bad, I was concerned when I saw the multiple 9+ minute run time of these songs but there was enough variety and wasn’t just jam band indulgence…some cool spacey stuff going on here.
Fantastic album, almost everything here is great. Tracks Neighborhood#3(power out), Rebellion(lies) and Wake Up are standout singles
A couple of classic metal songs, 9 minute instrumental could have been cut from this album because it goes nowhere…I honestly feel half these songs could been trimmed possibly by at least 2-3 minutes
I can appreciate that this isn’t generic R&B and hip hop but it’s not something I see myself returning too

The very enthusiastic orgasmic screaming coming from the audience really adds to the atmosphere of a performance that just rocks

The album as a whole is pretty predictable and kind of pretentious
Great album with some of their best songs in their catalog, only a few fillers but otherwise a solid album
This takes me back
The opening track is amazing and sets the stage for the rest.

Some really pretty songs here, I wish there were a couple of more uptempo songs to balance out the mostly slower paced ballads of the album.
The Pain of Loving You, Wildflowers, and Those Memories of You were favorites for me

Mick Ronson’s contributions and David Bowie as producer make this an essential album.

She’s got a really nice voice, but songs themselves come across a bit dull and generic to me.
Nothing really stands out and it’s not something I think I will return to.
I don’t understand, why is this on the list?
This was super boring and a waste of 45 minutes. I had never heard of them before and I understand why. Very boring D grade Brit pop…there’s so many better albums from this time that deserve your attention.
So many great songs on this, even the none hits which seems to be few on this album.

This album sounded so twisted and beautiful when I first heard it 25 years ago and it’s still a great record that makes me feel uneasy and completely engaged in the stories from start to finish.
This I know will not be for everyone and it can be a very polarizing experience…you will be completely all in or totally turned off by the subject matter, and you either enjoy Nick Cave’s voice or you don’t.
Stagger Lee and The Kindness of Strangers still shock and disturb.
Where the Wild Roses Grow and Henry Lee
are tragic and heartbreaking songs no matter how many times I’ve listened to them them.
There’s also a little bit of corniness to this whole album too which helps ease the awfulness that take place in these songs, I’m not sure but I think Nick Cave is having a bit of a laugh and seeing how far he can push his listeners with these macabre tales.
The closing song(a cover ofBob Dylan’s
Death is not the End) I think finally adds some much needed lightness, there is a little levity to the final minutes of the album which is appreciated after every brutal moment we’ve just encountered.
PJ Harvey and Kylie Minogue return to contribute more vocals along with Shane McGowen and few deviant Bad Seeds for this final song.
I highly recommend you listening to this at least once, not my favorite of Cave’s work but I think a worthwhile addition to this list.

Oh wow! This is terrible, it’s just self indulgent pretentious muck.
Prog Rock and I guess jazz fusion is what you get here and it’s torture to the ears.

This album has been a favorite of mine since I first discovered it almost 30 years ago.
Everything from the production or lack of it to the dark and grimy subject matter of the songs.

Pretty, pretty, pretty good
This album has been in my life for many years, it’s one that has always been a favorite of mine. It’s just a great pop album with a bit of a punk edge, a pretty solid album all the way through in my opinion.
This was an easy 5 stars for me.
I actually have both cover variants of the vinyl and a copy on CD so I think I must like it somewhat:)
I’ve really only been familiar with a couple of the compilations before giving this a listen. This album is wonderful and I plan on taking a deeper dive into the rest of his catalog.

This is trash, it’s boring and I assume would be regulated to the bargain/free bin at the local record store.
Easily one the best records I’ve ever heard…and most likely the best double album with really only a few weaker songs towards the later half of the album.

I almost knocked it down another star for just how pointless and just there to fill time the last song is, then it has a hidden track that also goes nowhere. Still there are few solid songs, but I think you are probably better off sticking to the albums that came before this one.
Just amazing primal energy throughout this record. It seems not many albums sounded like this in 1970. I’ve seen this album performed live during their reunion in the mid 2000’s and it was incredible.
Not a favorite of mine in Nick Cave’s catalog but there are some really good songs here.
