“Desire, I Want To Turn Into You” is my favorite album of 2023. It is a collection of near perfect pop songs. Though pop music is not realy my genre and is often too shallow and commercial, this album has enough depth in lyrics, composition, performance and production to make me love it.

I'm glad Olaf from Frozen could make a cameo on this album in the literal first seconds of the first song..... Kids who haven't been alive long enough to know what music is shouldn't be allowed to recommend albums. Also, something that was nominated for Best Engineered Album at the 2023 Grammy's should be automatically deleted from any list of albums, unless it is a list of albums that mark mankind's downfall. At what point does music stop being music and start being the brain droppings of computer AI software? Caroline Polachek contributed literally nothing to this album except some lyrics which were then auto tuned to holy hell and laid over regurgitated computer pop noises. This is truly awful, and makes me sad for humanity. If you are someone who considers this music, I truly feel sorry for you. This is nothing but a computer science experiment. Government agencies should use this album as a form of torture. Favourite songs: Sunset Least favourite songs: Bunny is a Rider (who thinks a baby crying would make a satisfying back beat? 44 million people apparently.... I weap for humanity... ), Hopedrunk Everasking (please change the batteries in your smoke detector before recording any more tracks....) and the rest of this gross drivel.... 1/5

This is an album I really wish I liked more than I actually do, the highs are nothing short of spectacular but to my taste there is only three of them on the entire album (Welcome to My Island, Bunny is a Rider, and Billions) and the rest I find to be rather boring. The album opens in a perfect way with Welcome to My Island. It's playful yet mysterious, and it encourages you to engage with the album. I think this song takes the place of an overture from rock operas, it foreshadows many themes will be expressed throughout the album. She deliberately sets a tone of a tropical island to jam that thought into your head while listening to the album (see the sand on the cover), and she completely succeeded. While talking about this album I actually referred to it as an "island" at several points, that's how well she sets the stage. This is definitely the most fun song, it's borderline dance pop, but later songs will reveal an artsier side. So now we're on Polachek 's island, what does it contain? Well primarily this is a pop album with a lot of British 90s electronic influence (trip hop, downtempo, garage, baggy, just to name a few) which jumps around from song to song. The lush tropical theme from the opener stays through pretty much the whole album, it sticks to it very well. There's a few things I don't like. I feel the auto tune used throughout the album is tacky for the most part, and Sunset just feels like it was hopping on the Latin trend that was budding in 2023 (though it is one of her most popular songs so maybe that's a me problem). The dislikes heavily outweigh the likes so this album is just fortunate that the strengths pull it up. The real gem of the album is the closer, Billions, which is one of my favourite pop songs ever. This Bjork-esque downtempo song uses the most lush instrumentation on the album which climaxes into a children's choir. The end of the song is so transcendental. Should it be on the main list: Yeah probably, you could make a strong case for it. Polachek is regarded as one of the finest pop songwriters of the 21st century, a quality that Dimery holds in high regard according to his book. Generic pop music with way too much use of auto-tune

This literally sounds like a parody album making fun of bland pop music. I feel like you have to put in a conscious effort to surgically extract any shred of /anything/ from an album like this. They're printing this shit in an evil laboratory, man. Always the same boring production, vocal style, lyrical themes. Absolute zero sauce in a hundred mile radius.

9/10 not much of a pop fan, but I really liked this! better than her first album

Love this album. Saw her live twice when she was touring this in 2023. Bangers from start to finish. My personal rating: 5/5 My rating relative to the list: 5/5 Should this have been included on the original list? Yes.

Good time. I can’t think of anything clever to say I just like this album

One of the best albums of the decade so far. Catchy as hell pop with experimental instrumentation and vocal layering, and a step up from Polachek’s already solid debut Pang. Welcome to my Island is such an incredible opener, and we’ve also got the flamenco-guitar-led Sunset, the absolute bop I Believe, and the gorgeous Butterfly Net. A stunning record that really grew on me throughout 2023; a really forward thinking album that makes me excited for the future of pop music

Interesting album with some pretty diverse sounds. Definitely sounds like its from this century with some different styles from an artist I hadn’t heard of before. Enjoyable!

Ear-pleasing, mostly, blend of pop and alternative rock. But the vocals on some songs were tweaked and autotuned.

I think it's still very early to add this here, but it's a very good example of how good pop music can be in this decade.

Desire, I Want To Turn Into You is alright, more modern pop but a bit too whimsical for me. I liked songs like I Believe where there's a decent flavour of 90s trance-pop stylings but it's overall quite a hit and miss album, songs like Blood and Butter are just crap. I think it gets a low 3 because it's at least interesting to good, and her voice works for the most part.

Fun dance/electronica LP from an indie artist I've seen everywhere but have never suitably listened to. Really enjoyed wall-to-wall production and lush synths, which formed a great platform for Polachek's substantive vocals. The LP does seem to lose some of its initial energy in the back half, growing a bit tired as it inches toward the finish line, but is still a fun listen overall. Good add, Caroline Polachek seems to put out albums all the time and constantly be abuzz in the indie world so it was nice to get a good intro to her work.

Art pop, alternative pop, new-age. Ni fu ni fa.

Very much within a particular strata of recent alternative pop. This was good but a little over-produced for me. Lyrically clever but I was ended up without much sense of anything being said.

Never really cared too much for this one

It's a level above a pop album- lots of interesting things going on. Not what I woulld choose to listen to on a cold evening but my kids like it.

I remember this album getting a lot of hype a couple of years ago, it never clicked with my at the time, listening back now I agree this is really good. One to be added to a list of great new music, but just not my personal taste for a frequent rotation.

Pop just doesn’t have the same stadium busting sounds as it used to. This is still pretty good but it’s softer in tone with modern production of flowing beats. Polachek has a good voice and listening to this album wasn’t hard at all. I could see how younger people would enjoy this if this is what pop is limited to. 6.0/10

This is pretty good. I like it best when she's not trying to get too cutesy. 3 stars.

I think it's a little too soon to be adding albums from 2023. Especially pop albums which are typically forgotten rather quickly by anyone who isn't specifically a fan of that particular artist. This is fine... In terms of pop, this is just fine. But there is literally nothing here that we have not heard 10000 times already. I feel bad that someone spent their pick on this.
