Some crazy funk on this thing. 9/10

Chucklehead is an American funk band from Boston, Massachusetts. Formed in 1988, the band reached the height of their popularity in the mid-1990s through constant touring and their lavish theme-based live shows. Chucklehead disbanded in 1997 following the release of their final album Belly Up. After a 17-year hiatus the band reunited in 2013 for several performances./nThe band became an underground indie hit and was celebrated in publications like The Village Voice and a young Source Magazine for its groundbreaking mix of hip hop and live funk. The band served as an escapist, irreverent, and acerbic counterweight to the grunge music at the top of the Billboard charts at the time.
Some crazy funk on this thing. 9/10
Damn this thing grooves.
Exceptionally funky. Grooved a lot to this while doing yard work.
Ohh what a fun funky time!
Way cooler than I assumed from the band name. Also - I have no idea how I missed these guys back in the early 90's.
The modern funk, fun
This was a fun funk album. The hip hop/rap elements were well executed and didn’t feel forced. This album is very much of its time but still sounds good today.
Your favorite local funk band that plays at that bar that you'd listen to live but never at home.
I liked this pretty well, I think it needed some slower jams to round it out. Even the mellower stuff had a pretty frenetic pace. Extra point for ending so strongly though, the last song is a banger.
Good choice. Thanks for suggesting.
Refreshing to hear straight up funk from a 90s perspective rather than 70s or anything Prince or Red Hot Chili Peppers. Harder than the UK’s Acid Jazz movement of the same era. I like traditional funk, so appreciate this addition, thank you for highlighting. Entertained me well on my 10k run this morning.
If you were young in Boston in the 90s, I can see how this might hold some nostalgic sway for you. Otherwise, this is some pretty watered down funk.
really enjoyed that very funky and fresh
8/10. Kinda funky, I can see how this would be really fun as a live, underground option, but it was only pretty food overall, I would say. The tug boat themed one was fun.
I could see how great this would be live in the 90s. however, going to listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik to align my chakras
Funky, but not memorable
Seems like they'd be a fun bar band. 3 stars.
Nice jazzy rhytm. Good record
This some pretty obscure funk and I notice that most songs only have a few thousand listens on Spotify. Its fun stuff albeit a bit dated and comparisons with Earth Wind and Fire that I just got yesterday are inevitable, unfortunately its hard to compare to EWF.
Nothing much to say, just solid, fun funk with a bit of a bite. I was singing "Retrosexy" before it ended. Even the rap verses (which may be a little too numerous) were fun enough to enjoy. It's not perfect by any stretch, but it's damn good. Favorite tracks: "Retrosexy", "Big Dumb Song"
It’s been a while since I heard any funk on this project, so this was very welcome! It’s great!!
Yes, give me the funk.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Retrosexy, We can work it out, Tug boat
Bit of a 1990s groove and swagger, mixing rock and funk, just how things were back then. Nothing groundbreaking, but I could listen to this in the background while I drink beer in the backyard on a hot summer's day. etc. 3/5.
Funky projects often rely on instant energy to start the flywheel and hold the contraption together. Chucklehead delay their concept by just a track and a minute, which does much to close the opening of Fuzz while leaving the back of the album open. It's a neat trick, not quite carried by the second half songwriting. It's a friendly introduction to a band with chops and without docs, just the kind of thing you like to discover about a time and place not far away.
The funky rithms and grooves I can dig. But why on earth do a cover of the Beatles' We Can Work It Out? Beatles catalogue is not intended to be funked with.
Very funky. Very 90s
Something with a lot slicky funk and failed attempt to cover The Beatles.
I've never heard this before, and I fell instantly and utterly in love with it! It's just so frigging cool, man. And fun! I love the funky, weird, playfulness of it. I love all the little classic rock easter eggs sprinkled throughout the lyrics too. Truly the perfect album to rotate several times end to end while I assembled my Lego Typewriter this afternoon. I really love it. I don't understand why it's being rated so low by other listeners, but to the person that put this in, THANK YOU! I love it and I wouldn't have discovered it without you having submitted it. You're a real groovy cat, pal, thanks a ton :)
So fun! Thanks!
The first song made me think this was a shitpost album but it actually turned out to be ultra 90s funk which was pretty fun to listen to. The typical 90s production tropes made the 70s funk style sound new and fresh and somehow not that dated.
Good 'n' funky. I enjoyed it!
Based on the album cover I wasn’t expecting this to be as funky, really enjoyed, good to find hidden gems like this on the user list,
I was expecting the blandest sort of grunge with a singer who sounds like he needs a laxative to get the 'emotion' out. Instead I got an album of fun, Prince aping grooves and songs that knew exactly how welcome they'd be for, length wise. Thoroughly enjoyable.
The second white boy funk album from the user albums section. Curious considering how narrow the genre is.
Oh this was fun, groovy and energetic. The vocals are not quite strong enough to hold up against what's going on musically though. On the whole, this was an interesting listen. But if I'm going for funk at all, it's going to be old school, not these guys. Fave Songs: Bozack, Retrosexy, Day Job, Tug Boat
An oddball album for sure. You have the funky music white boy and a Beatles cover. What is this album other than a bunch of dudes just playing what they think is good music. It’s not bad just so obviously 90s. This felt like if you took ska and tried to make it work for a wider audience. Meh. 5.3/10
I never heard of Chucklehead and I understand why (they never became famous). I understand that it must have been a great live band.
This was great fun. Not sure I'd listen to it again but I can imagine seeing this band at a festival and absolutely loving it.
Not bad
Apparently I am the only user on Airbuds to listen to this band
It was very funky. The lyrics were just alright. I will round up.
Solid funk LP, didn’t have much staying power for me but I enjoyed the grooves in the moment and that’s all I can ask for.
Funky little number
Funk. Ni fu ni fa.
Funky and spunky. I'd heard of them, but probably not quite as familiar as Rippopotamus. Meanwhile, Chucklehead has the number of plays in the triple digits still. Get in while you still can.
Tryna relive the glory days huh?
solid 90s funk, if you can dig it
This was kind of cool. Definitely funk with a lot of other genres mixed in. It definitely felt of its era.
They only have 2-3 hundred listeners. It is an amazingly low number as this album was not bad at all.
Funky
Pretty fun - Wikipedia says they're well known for a live show & I bet! Especially liked Hell
Groovy
I have no idea what to make of this. I can't tell if I liked it or not. Like maybe a not such good Beastie Boys. I didn't hate it but wasn't like massively into it either. Middle of the road
Pretty fun, but also sitting in an unfortunate time period where it's *way* late to the party on this style of funk, while also not far enough forward from it to be at the right time for the callback
Mid-90s funk, not bad
Basic stuff
Unmemorable I’m afraid
Is this someone's friend's band?
Not bad! Cool little modern funk album.
It's fun and I'd love to see these guys live but really speaking this is a Tribute band. They are recreating a genre sound.
Jazz with heavy bass lines. It didn't really draw me in.
Hunh. Jam bands have rabid followings but their albums never really capture the trance that they cast on their enraptured fans. It’s another funk band from the 1990s without much major media exposure. Ok but derivative of RHCPs.
Chucklehead built their brand on impressive live shows, but that doesn't always translate very well to the studio. In this case, their brand of jazzy funk rock just sorta washed over me with no one song standing out. Also can't stand the RHCP-style rapping. Not notable in the slightest, but they were fine otherwise. CONTENDER FOR THE LIST: I can't think of a single reason why it should be.
This is not my jam. Annoying from start to finish. The jazzy bass line, big bandy percussion, staccato rap, and weird vocal harmony choices. One of the most challenging in a while to simply have to listen to it all the way through.
Very, very funky, but mainly in the sense of a bad smell. Rating: 1.5 Playlist track: Retrosexy Date listened: 19/11/24
Trash.
