Whipped Cream & Other Delights
Album Summary

This album has been submitted by a user and is not included in any edition of the book.

Whipped Cream & Other Delights is a 1965 studio album by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, called "Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass" for this album, released on A&M Records. It is the band's fourth full album and arguably their most popular release. This album saw the band nearly abandoning its Mexican-themed music, featuring mostly instrumental arrangements of popular songs, and also generating some major pop hits for the first time since "The Lonely Bull". One "tradition" of the early Brass was to include a number rendered in "strip-tease" fashion, and this album's entry for that style was "Love Potion No. 9". Whipped Cream & Other Delights sold over 6 million copies in the United States and the album cover alone is considered a classic pop culture icon. It featured model Dolores Erickson[8] wearing chiffon and shaving cream. The picture was taken at a time when Erickson was three months pregnant.[9] The album cover was so popular with Alpert fans that, during concerts, when about to play the song "Whipped Cream," Alpert would jokingly tell the audience, "Sorry, we can't play the album cover for you!"

Here's a few random thoughts on why I chose this album: It was such a part of popular culture that I do think everyone should hear it. It's a part of 1960s culture that wasn't represented much--not everyone was listening to blues-inspired rock or folk. This music was still around and a huge part of my 70's childhood, especially on TV. The cover is iconic! I remember when there were a lot more instrumental songs on the radio and in the charts (did that end with Kenny G?) and I wanted to be reminded of that, and remember the great ones. I love the changing of styles of the popular songs--uptempo "Taste of Honey," striptease "Love Potion No. 9," a very Latin "Lemon Tree," and so on--I love when musicians play with songs like that. My 17-year-old son requested this album on our last road trip--I love that he loves this album. The musicians are awesome and that brass kicks ass. It's fun and joyful--those are important emotions, too!

So, I woke up with a stinking hangover and a long journey ahead of me this morning. Seeing this as my selection for the day, my heart sank. What in the easy listening is this? But then I put it on, and the soothing sounds of Tijuana Brass were like a salve to my aching head and soul. A lovely mix of jaunty and relaxed brass is sometimes exactly what you need, and this was very much the right album at the right time.

This is one of those albums that transcends time, an instant classic that finds its way into many a record collection. For me, it was among the first records I recognized. My parents had it, nestled in their small stack of vinyl, and the cover alone left an impression—sultry, playful, and unmistakably iconic. But beyond the infamous album art, there’s a groove and sophistication to Whipped Cream & Other Delights that’s captivating. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass weave a tapestry of catchy, breezy tunes that feel like the essence of 60s cool. Tracks like "A Taste of Honey" and "Whipped Cream" showcase the effortless charm of Alpert’s trumpet, giving each song a sense of fun that still feels fresh. It’s a feel-good record, one that combines jazz flair with pop accessibility, and no matter where or when you hear it, the music has a way of brightening the room. This album doesn’t just sound like an era; it defines it, inviting listeners to step into a world that’s equal parts classy and carefree. I love it as much today as I did when I first laid eyes—and ears—on it.

Actually have an old LP version of this to pull off the stacks. A bit of a cultural artifact but you know, all good fun.

Easy listening that is ubiquitous in all Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift store record sections. You don't see this one quite as often because it is treasured for its cover. I was ready to pan this, but in listening to it, I can't deny its charms. Recorded with some of the finest members of the Wrecking Crew.

Waffled between a 2 and 3 on this one, as while it’s well-executed and generally pleasing it lacked a certain wow factor and left me disappointed as to why some record stores have entire walls tiled with copies of this LP. Going with a 3 here by thinking about this in its historical context – not a big band expert, but I’m sure this was a relative hell of a listen when it first dropped.

I grew up with this in my family record collection and would play this very often. I loved inventing my own lyrics to these songs and performing them for my sister. This is still delightful to me. I love Herb Alpert’s arrangements, and there’s more complexity to them once you take some time to listen. I have had decades to ponder each note of this and the songs still delight me!

I can't believe this didn't make the 1001 list. Travesty! This is, like the title said, a bunch of absolute delights. Well chosen, friend!

I needed this. Very fun. I usually don't stay too long after the album ends and Spotify starts playing similar music but I sure did today. Honestly, I should really listen to music like this more often. What a world it would be if this was the popular sound rather than the mumbly, mopey nonsense I'm subjected to when I'm forced to listen to modern radio at work. Oh, and that album cover rules.

Hard not to like this...if your an old F&*k like me! LOl. It's a bit before My time, but still reminds me of the 1970s (when I was a kid)....mainly because of the Newlywed Game....what's the strangest place you've ever made 'whoopie'? Standouts: Whipped Cream, A Taste of Honey, Love Potion #9, Lollipops and Roses, Peanuts Rating: 4/5 (for the nostalgia it brought, more than it's staying power).

Good music, inviting you to rest and relax to enjoy it. However, it cannot avoid the retro style, from its album cover to its jazz music. Short and compact in its intentions, made to measure for the music of TV series and movies. A taste of honey is its best track. 3 1/2 stars because it gives me everything that a music album can give without songs.

Not one but two songs that have been completely separated from its origin. We got ladyfingers the most nostalgic/romanticized tik tok sound and whipped cream which I’ve heard a million times but never really thought of too much. Overall not bad.

This is kinda fun. Chick on the cover is possibly dead of old age by now, but was obviously a total babe. According to wikipedia the cover has become a pop icon, but I had no idea. I can see why, though. That shit is HOT. Catchy music, too. Zero substance, but catchy. Reminds me of Green Onions a bit. Same sorta 3/5.

There’s not much about this album that stood out to be upon listening, but a good reason for that is how ubiquitous this sound became. It’s well executed jazz/easy listening that has some very fine moments,

Racy album cover alert! I guess this whipped cream gown was the more demure precursor to Ali Larter’s whipped cream bikini. What a fun jazzy album to go along with it!

Had the album hanging on my dorm room wall in college. I liked that it was simultaneously sort of risque while also being kitschy and retro. I also convinced myself that I loved the album. Looking back... it's just sort of a nice novelty album, isn't it? There's nothing to dislike here. Nothing! But it's just so light and airy and there doesn't feel like any substance at all. Sort of... like... whipped cream.

This is a lighter flavor of jazz that is very much of its time, but still was incredibly popular and deserves a spot on the list. Not too deep, but well played and a pretty fun listen. Fave Songs: Ladyfingers, A Taste of Honey, Lemon Tree, Bittersweet Samba, Green Peppers

Sexy LP cover. Smooth melodic trumpet and tight arrangements. Very “easy listening” and a bit bland. Certainly we’ll conceived and executed and if it’s time. Not of this time, however!

Excellent album cover! The music itself is not so much something I can get too enthusiastic about. Sounds too much like I'm spending time in a vintage theme park.
