Re is the second studio album by Mexican rock band Café Tacuba, released in 1994. The album has been called "the equivalent of The Beatles' White Album for the rock en español movement" by The New York Times. In 2012, Rolling Stone ranked it at number one on its list of "The 10 Greatest Latin Rock Albums of All Time". Re album established Café Tacuba's style of genre-switching, which had not been as prominent on their debut album Café Tacuba, released two years earlier. Its sheer length – an hour long – and experimentation with musical styles have made it a favorite among fans. One notable aspect of the album is that it contains several musical genres, notably norteño, huapango, banda, and bolero.

Harlequin-act albums tend to require a turn somewhere to save the length, and Re's arrived around La pinta. This is an - emphasize - happy member of the too-many-ideas club, a maximalist piece which inspires emotional understanding while resisting the mathematical form. The balancing feat promises new highlights each spin around.
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: La ingrata, El ciclon, Esa noche, Tropico de cancer, El fin de la infancia, Las flores, El baile y el salon
This is an incredible album that should have been on the list. This absolutely transcends genre while being recognizably Latin rock. I don’t have the knowledge to tease out the various Mexican genres, but can hear the blending of alternative, pop, and metal throughout.
This was a great listen! Lots of variety in the songs that kept things interesting. I can’t imagine ever having listened to this but for the knowledgable person who put this on the list - so thanks! Terrific!
Comparing this to the White Album is incredibly accurate. A couple songs do take a notch down, but I thoroughly enjoy the entry.
An eclectic, complex, Latin American rock, pop, jazz, folk album. An hour long, but plenty of twists and turns to keep it high energy and interesting. Not something I would have listened to without this list, but I really enjoyed it and would absolutely revisit. Rating: 4.5 Playlist track: La ingrata Date listened: 08/08/24
Y'all are killing it with your selections. No matter what kind of music you like, you'll find something here that appeals to you. Lots of different styles and, maybe not every song is the greatest, but most are darn good. Thanks a lot!
Another fun one with that international touch!
This is great! What a journey through styles! I think this definitely brings some sadly neglected music to the project!
Latin alternative, rock en español norteño. Muy ecléctico. Un 4.
I enjoyed it. Thanks for the non-English rec!
I was skeptical of the “Beatles white album of Latino music” but honestly it mostly lived up to that. I’m not a huge fan of the white album in the first place so the expectations weren’t super high but it was an eclectic mix of genres just with a Hispanic twang to all of it. The heavy metal song wasn’t even my fav but it was the most memorable one just because it caught me off guard.
Definitely interesting, eclectic maybe to a fault. The vocals intermittently got on my nerves, getting into some caricaturish modes, too much nasal sawing, not enough melody.
Reminds me of a Mexican Squeeze or XTC.
I enjoyed some of this, but at times it grated on my nerves, especially the vocals. 3 stars.
This was a pretty fun listen and a welcome addition of a Mexican artist. Thanks for recommending. Interesting, diverse collection of songs. A little stylistically scattershot for my taste, and the vocals don't always land. But when they get it right, this is pretty great. Fave Songs: Madrugal, Esa Noche, Las Flores, El Baile y el Salón, El Puñal y el Corazón, 24 Horas
Thought I was listening to a Mexican Now That’s What I Call Music compilation! So many diverse styles. However only a few songs where the multiple styles are fused together, which would have been more progressive. Accomplished nonetheless.
I am Latin, but I have never been a big fan of Cafe Tacuba, I consider that only the classics Ingrata and Las Flores truly stand out, since it seems like a mistake to fill an album with irrelevant songs or, on the contrary, only include songs to meet a quota . Most of the songs didn't provoke me at all, they are quite insipid in their experimentality. rate 2.5
Wanted to like the mix of traditional Hispanic + some modern electronic elements, but the vocals were so grating and the execution so lacking that this one became more of a slog than anything else.
One of the greatest albums of all times of the latin rock in Spanish and that should have been included in the original list. It simply doesn’t make sense with so many people having Spanish as their native language that just a couple of albums in Spanish were included in the list. I grew up listening to this album, and it is just entirely amazing. A lot of genres with the particular style of Cafe Tacvba, one of the greatest Mexican rock bands, one of the longest-running bands in the planet with their original lineup, having collaborations with David Byrne, Incubus and Beck. It was the only Mexican band that I can remember that did a tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one their albums, and it was for Re because it was a big deal for the Mexican rock music and still is.
Fun music, but at times the mixing felt a little off. Mostly the drums sounded very unnarural
This is pretty fun musically, but the singing has an awful jokey edge to it. Only at times, though. 3/5.
Nice. :)
It's... different
Áhugavert og all over the place.
Well, I couldn't make anything out of this. Sure that there people like this kinda South American vibe, but I'm not one of them.
It's helping the algorithms. So far.
Only got through 2 songs, kind of liberating not feeling bound to listen to the whole thing as I was with the original 1001
Not for me
It sounds like a combination of random cartoon music, Eric Cartman, and if a ska band was introduced to even more horns. Not my cup of tea, but maybe for someone else.
Na man 1
Really? Seriously....
