Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Couldn't finish it. Not for me

I always underestimate the extent to which shit albums like this can really ruin my mood for the night that I listen to them. Not that I was in a crazy good mood before starting this but my god by halfway through I realized I was physically uncomfortable and felt angry and irritated even though I was just casually playing stardew valley. It's a god awful post-punk album but I have to commend it for how quickly it elicited a visceral reaction from me; at least it got a reaction I guess. Also, reading though the other reviews I found out that this was Nick Cave's first band, which as soon as I found that out I instantly heard it in the vocals unfortunately. He's so much better than this.

Totally awful to listen to. There was nothing appealing to me whatsoever about the experience.

Gave up. Hardcore, top level shite

I think part of me respects that they’re just doing what they want to do, but it sure ain’t pleasant on the ear holes.

DNF. I hated this.

just terrible and noisy

Life is too short to have to go through this.

Is this still music?

Sounds just about as bad as the album cover looks. Dude sounds like the villain in a muppet movie. ... After finishing the album, found out it's Nick Cave. I had his 1997 solo album already. Liked that way more than this. This was a struggle to listen through

its rock but also hardly music 1.5

It's awful. I like Nick Cave but this is really bad juvenile stuff. I just don't see anything in it.

Ear assault. Trash

Yeah, pretty bad. I didn't like a single song, and it was just full of boring.

Why even 1 point. Garbage for the ears.

The crashing of axes and drums in the post punk era was a mix of of music attempted by many spaced out wannabees who couldn't sing, but could pull something together that might be a backing track to a violent video game. I think Nick Cove made a wise move into acting. Thanks 1001 albums for introducing me to yet another album I would never have considered listening to, nor will I ever again, pure shite.

A piss-take

this is pretty awful.

Jesus wept.

Almost becomes bearable when they stumble their way into something resembling a melody which I'm sure was an accident.

As much as I wanted to be an 80’s punk fan, I don’t think so.

This album is just junk and belongs in the trash can. 0 stars if I could.

This belongs in a junkyard. Sounded like it was recorded in someone's unfinished basement by guys that just got instruments for the first time. Maybe this is for somebody, but definitely not me

Verschrikkelijk!

Just punk, nothing special. It's a great album but I don't know if it deserves to be at the top

Looked like shit, sounded like shit. I don't understand how some of these albums get on this list

I watched a moving called The Anniversary Party the other night, then listened to The Birthday Party the following morning. They're entirely unrelated however the movie was better.

I’ll admit it started to grow on me. Torn between Dead Joe versions 1 and 2.

I'm all about art as expression, and therefore that all expressions must and should exist. That said, I can't even recognize the music in this. To me it's no different than a room of children going apeshit on cheap toy imitations of instruments. I know that this isn't true, but it's all I can hear.

Oh man, would you look at that? A huge pile of dogshit and I just stepped right in it! And I'm wearing my brand new chucks too. That sucks. Maybe there's a Ryan Adams album nearby I can wipe my feet on.

I normally like post-punk, but this just does not do it for me. There are way worse albums out there, but this is just terrible. Why Rob, just fucking why?

Nick Cave gets better. Waaay better. This is just noise.

No this was bad

Terrible punk album. Once again, just a bunch of noise and I didn’t connect with a single song.

Album 26 of 1001 Junkyard - Birthday Party Favorite Track : Release the Bats Rating : 1 / 5 One day you get Dire Straits, the next day you get this...and so it goes. At times I thought I was listening to some parody with Jack Black. Can't take this seriously. I know that any album is likely the favorite album of somebody. That is a sad thought. Pass this one by unless British post punk is your thing.

God, what a chore to get through. These guys don't give a damn about anything, even their music, and why should I? I'll admit that the end of Hamlet (Pow Pow Pow), which repeats the same line about fifty times, achieved a sort of kaleidoscopic beauty in its repetition... but that's all I got. Mike Patton does this schtick 20x better. I was going to write that this sounds uncannily like Nick Cave without any skill whatsoever, and then I looked it up... That's EXACTLY what it is! Good thing he got better with age and practice.

No ! Life’s too short to be subjected to this racket. 1*

Didn't work for me.

As bad as the album cover. I already dislike Nick Cave quite a lot (three 2 star albums and 1 three star album) and this didn't win any favours. Very hard to listen to and will never listen to it again.

Two tracks and I'm done. Too metal.

No good

Rubbish

Loud and shouty. Couldn't find a tune. Gave up it half way through.

Noise for noise sake. I know that Nick Cave is a great songwriter and a hell of an interpreter of song. Maybe those talents are on display here, but it is all hidden by what appears to just be a cacophony of poorly played instruments. This is punk at its most unleashed and decidedly, not for me.

I’d never heard of The Birthday Party before today. My assumption based on the album art is that it’s likely punk. My worry is that the album art is a lot better than the music. Let’s find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Dead Joe (2nd Version) There was a time in my life when I might have really liked this music, but it just didn’t do anything for me this time. Perhaps it needs a Tony Hawk game to be played to get the most out of it. Honestly, I didn’t really like any of the songs off this. I just picked Dead Joe (Second Version) as it’s the only one the made me look at what the title was. I can’t remember why I looked, maybe I was just curious if the time so turned my phone screen on.

I had this and thought it was shit

Not for me, it's a little too loud and thrashy

Can't handle the punk on this one

This can join Suicide and Electric Prunes.

Bottom 5 album this. Pointless drivel.

I'm all for experimental music but they should've experimented with something different.

Sublime album…

garage bands first time playing instruments that somehow got on this list?

Longest 47 minutes of my life. The only reason I can fathom it being on this list is that it's the musical equivalent of, "Come here! You gotta smell this!"

Why suggest this racket?

First, I found it hard to get past the awful cover art. Then, the songs weren't available on Spotify and when I played the first song on YouTube, I needed to double check the playback speed - it sounded slow and distorted. The next song was the right speed - but barely listenable. And so on. It's good to see that the first Nick Cave album sent our way by 1001 was a decade after this and far less cacophonic.

One of the top 5 most awful things I've heard....

This has got to be the worst thing I have ever listened to. I actually listened to quite a bit of because it was like a car accident and I couldn't look away. If I could give no stars I would.

I usually cut punk and punk-adjacent albums some slack because there's a certain... aesthetic baked into the genre that is intentionally counter-intuitive. But this was just crap. Most of the time, it felt like the vocals and music were recorded completely independent of each other and mashed together in the studio by Frankenstein the audio engineer. I mean, nothing matched. Vocal verses overlapped musical choruses and half the time, the singer wasn't even singing in the same key. Who even is this singer? Oh. It's Nick Cave. Of course it is. Well, like most Nick Cave projects, this is just a really trash album that nobody needs to listen to. What a waste of time.

That’s a no from me, dawg!

unpleasant punk

Bad quality of the record and also the music is terrible.

Ooh. Not the punk I'm into, I'm afraid.

Fucking terrible

A very disgusting pigfuck experience. I normally like noise rock but this wasn't it, maybe it was grimly or it was nick cave vocals and his weird vocal inflections but honestly getting though this was like chore that I kept wanting to keep avoiding

On the one hand, that album art is fucking rad and if it sounds as cool as it looks this is gonna rule. On the other, I know what the Birthday Party is and know chances of it rocking are very, very slim. Ok no it's avant-garde crud. *sigh*. It doesn't just suck; it's actively terrible. 1/5.

Hard pass for me. This album belongs in a junkyard.

Nick Cave's voice is undeniable, this album however it's not good.

This album Blast[s] Off with some truly bad music. This one is going to be rough. I tried to like She's Hit and at first I did. But then it got worse the longer it went on. Dead Joe - Right back to pure horse shit. Okay.... From this point forward I will only say positive comments about this album:

And here I thought Rob Zombie drew these pictures... If this album were a movie, Martin Scorsese would consider it Cinema. This is a group of guys who were too late for the punk movement and too old for the hair metal movement. Somewhere in between is not a good place to be. I'm going to listen to Portishead.

absolutely not for me

At least true to its title. Completely junk

Wasn’t great

yikes. sounds like his girl broke up with him and he went to a basement night club to whine about it........................all night long

Pretty awful to be honest, didn't enjoy it at all.

Complete garbage!

Awesome album art, terrible music haha

Noisy. Unpleasant. Incoherent. Not your best, Nick. Conor - 1 Shannah - 0.5 Bill - 1 (0.83/5)

what the fuck

nope. self explanatory. doesn’t deserve my effort. god awful.

...are you shitting me? this is a goddamn mockery of music/fun/creativity. i have a visceral hatred for any/everyone involved with this. 0/10 0 stars. (thus far the third of ~300 albums i couldn't/wouldn't finish)

I won't claim that this was without artistic merit, but I sure hated listening to it. So, um, yeah.

Waking up with a sore neck for the third morning in a row (I'm too old for yard work, I guess), the first few bars of the first track were like a slap in the face as I started my walk, and I thought, "I just can't..." But, I did. There were some moments, when it was more like singing than the grinding and screaming, that I thought there was a maybe here...but then no. I just didn't enjoy this album.

For some reason I was under the impression that I liked Nick Cave. I’m starting to wonder where that impression came from… This and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ MURDER SONGS have really turned me off. I hate the album cover, though it is appropriate for the contents. There’s some musicality to the songs but nothing I am interested in hearing. I will admit that the end of “Release the Bats” made me start to laugh, if a bit maniacally. I’m not sure if I was genuinely amused or giddy because there was only 12 seconds left to listen to. JUNK YARD and I did not make a love connection.

No, tried and kind of had something, but struggled to finish every song

Abscheulich.

Did not finish and did not enjoy

Pretty unlistenable 1

I turned this off seconds into the first song. I tried skimming through a couple others. I don’t know why anyone would choose to listen to this. I would give it a 0 if I could.

Too horrible to make it through. Wish I could give it a 0.

This is kind of interesting in a how much worse can this album get kind of way.

Horrible. Like a birthday party in hell. Truly junk. Etc.

1/5 no

Pretty amazing awesome art, but WTF is this!?! Nick Cave has come quite a way from this. Give me the Peaky Blinders theme song on repeat 1000 times before listening to this again

Ummmmmm no.

OMG. Is this Music?

2/10. This was painful to listen to, and it felt so long. Maybe even a 1.

This album is too difficult for me to recommend it. Song structures, though not non-existent they are dissonant and unconventional and not very appealing to this listener. 1.5 🌟

Tu forces Robert

Too abrasive for me. It’s a challenging listen.

It’s only getting a 1 because the album cover is great

This was pretty terrible from my perspective. It just felt like some messy guitars and a very deep voice singing inaudibly. I skipped most of it and then actually had to force myself to listen since I skipped most of it. 1.7/10

Fell like this was supposed to experimental or bad shit crazy but was really just bat shit.

Ruido sin sentido.

Ugh, not for me - terrible low energy emo garbage

I'm sorry, no. Just no. Maybe the first one I've tapped out of. Not the Monday afternoon vibes we were looking for! Fav new track: She's Hit (as I didn't get much further)

Atrocious. That tinnie 80s cymbal sound is worse than the banjo

not working for me.

Thirty bad therapy sessions wouldn’t be as painful as this album. Can’t think of a subtle redeeming quality of this clusterfuck of noise

Não está disponível no spotify

Too grungy for me, not something I enjoyed listening to

WTF did I just listen to?

The album cover art was already the first warning that this was going to be garbage. Horrendous singing and mashing of instruments. 1/10.

This was just bad

lots of noise, did not enjoy.

I have never heard of The Birthday Party or any of the music on the album. This was hard enough to get through that the album is getting 1 star.

Well, this is certainly interesting. What a mix of styles and sounds. Has some fun moments in there. Overall, a bit too cacophonic and jarring for my own personal listening choice, but it sure does seem original.

Trotz nick cave wirklich schwierig

nahhhhhh not for me fam

Just cos an album is influential doesn't mean its entertaining to listen to.

Barulho

Should’ve left this as did-not-listen

My ear stepped in something, and I can’t seem to scrape it off.

I can't. This album sounds approximately like a cat being run over by an alien person in a loud monster truck thing.

They have a lot inside, but the outside is toooo weird

Vaya mierda, no lo aguanto entero.

Unlistenable. Like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. Hard to tell what is redeeming about this one.

just noisy trash

The worst.

Mölyä ja meteliä, aivan kauheeta paskaa. Tämä pääsi ärsyttävyydessä jo kuninkuusluokkaan!

not to my liking

I get that its groundbreaking yada yada, but it sounded like it was recorded by a highschoolband in a basement.

Bad players, bad singer. They don't even play together.

Self indulgent nonsense.. the sound of a band falling down the stairs!
