James Taylor
5/5
A few fantastic songs, a few good ones, and definitely some filler. Fire & Rain, Country Road, and Sweet Baby James are just beautiful songs. I like Steamroller’s inclusion here as a gritty blues song that cuts against melancholy of F&R and SBJ.

I never want to hear this again. Give me some yacht rock instead of angry music.

A really great album, particularly for a debut. A nice easy country rock listen. Some nice guitar work on the last song that shows what eventually is to come for the Eagles

LL Cool J
3/5
Dude was hungry while writing this album. Food references dropped everywhere
Talking Heads
4/5
Hugh Masekela
3/5
Enjoyed Part of a Whole and some of the more up tempo songs.
Massive Attack
2/5
Not my jam
The Damned
4/5
Late 70’s punk is great. This is a fun album.
Shack
3/5
A solid album. My review may be skewing more positive since the last album I listened to was by the Incredible String Band. This was an enjoyable listen.
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
Not really my style of music. I
might like it more if they put a bird on it.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Solid album
The Who
3/5
I’m not a fan of the early Who records. I Can See for Miles is a decent tune because you can start to hear some of the anger that later enters The Who’s music. Sunrise is interesting because you can hear part of the opening to Pinball Wizard in the guitar solo.
Doves
3/5
Decent album. Too much electronics of the late 90s/early 2000s for my taste though.
Jethro Tull
4/5
A fun album with some classic songs
Badly Drawn Boy
2/5
Meh. Seems like a decent if enough album.
Eagles
5/5
A really great album, particularly for a debut. A nice easy country rock listen. Some nice guitar work on the last song that shows what eventually is to come for the Eagles
David Bowie
3/5
I generally like Bowie a lot, but this album didn’t do it for me.
Arcade Fire
2/5
Meh. Overly dramatic and too much voice synth
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
It’s ok. A little too much 80’s synth and drum machine for me. Too dance music-y.
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
This is the second Belle & Sebastian album I’ve rated as a part of the 1001 albums. This really good (much better than the other) and I may have to go back and listen to all of their albums now.
Deerhunter
2/5
Meh. It’s ok, I guess.
Jefferson Airplane
5/5
One of the peak psychedelic albums. Embryonic Journey is amazing. Somebody to Love is probably the best song to come out of San Francisco during that period.
The Soft Boys
4/5
I have never heard if this band before. This is really good and should be with Robyn Hitchcock and Kim Rew. Reminds me a lot of Cheap Trick.
Koffi Olomide
3/5
I like the music a lot. However, i don’t really like the vocal style. Feels like island music so it would be something good to listen to while sitting near the ocean while having a Mai Thai
Lou Reed
3/5
Not as good as Transformer but still solid. I like Lou Reed’s vocals so that helps.
System Of A Down
1/5
I never want to hear this again. Give me some yacht rock instead of angry music.
Jerry Lee Lewis
4/5
A fun and high energy album. He played the hits. Definitely a good listen.
The Go-Betweens
4/5
I’ve never heard of this band, but they kind if remind me of 10,000 Maniacs. I like the acoustic driven songs.
Carole King
5/5
SO MANY hits on this one. Amazing album.
Metallica
3/5
I initially like it, but it just kept going and going and going. By the end I was just hoping that each song would be the last.
King Crimson
2/5
Meh. I’m not really into prog rock. It was just ok.
Little Richard
4/5
I’ve never listened to a full Little Richard album before. A lot of hits here (most of which were covered by the early Beatles). Fun and high energy album for Monday morning.
Faust
2/5
I don’t know what to think of this one. Kinda pop, kinda prog rock, kinda just weird.
Neneh Cherry
2/5
I’m surprised this came out in 1989. This sounds like much older (late 70s or really 80s) rap both lyrically and musically. It was an ok album, kind of generic lyrics.
Basement Jaxx
2/5
I’m just not into this style of music.
Beatles
5/5
Jane's Addiction
2/5
This was a big album with the cool skater kid crowd. I was not a cool skater kid and I didn’t care much for it then or now after listening to it 25 years later.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
2/5
Album is ok. Couple tunes I liked.
ZZ Top
4/5
Cool album. La Grange is not in my top 5 of ZZ Top songs, but the overall album is pretty good.
Eminem
1/5
I’m not a fan of this at all
Herbie Hancock
4/5
This is pretty cool. I knew his name just not his music. I like it.
Ray Charles
3/5
Ray is great. I’m not a fan of country standards though.
The Mamas & The Papas
5/5
I really love this album. Mama Cass had some pipes on her. Go Where You Want to Go is such a great song and shows off Cass.
Randy Newman
4/5
I didn’t realize so many if his greatest songs were on this one album. Political Science and Sail Away are tremendous. Lonely at the Top and Burn on are also classics. Great album overall.
John Coltrane
4/5
A nice album. I’m not a fan of the extended drum solos and upright bass solos.
Frank Sinatra
4/5
Not Frank’s bes,t but I could listen to this all day.
Sufjan Stevens
2/5
Too much going on here. Songs are all over the place. Not a fan.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
4/5
A solid debut album.
Fugazi
2/5
This isn’t my cup of tea, but it was ok
Isaac Hayes
5/5
Even though most of this is instrumental, it is fantastic. I love the Theme from Shaft.
The Who
3/5
I didn’t really care for much of this album other than Pinball Wizard and Tommy Can You Hear Me
Marty Robbins
4/5
This is an enjoyable album. Nice story telling.
Elvis Costello
3/5
This was just ok in my book.
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
Bad Company
5/5
Fantastic album beginning to end.
3/5
I don’t know what to think of this band…sometimes they sound like U2 and other times they sound like a metal band. I’m not a U2 or a metal fan.
Black Sabbath
4/5
A classic and solid album.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
I didn’t get this one at all.
The Saints
3/5
This is a pretty good album. I’ve not hewed of this group before. Punk with horns was a great mix on the first track.
Adam & The Ants
3/5
This was just ok. Nothing really grabbed my attention so kind of surprising this had so many big hits.
Rod Stewart
5/5
I love this album.
Eminem
2/5
I just don’t enjoy these lyrics. Some of the music is good, but I just can’t get past the lyrics
The Flying Burrito Brothers
4/5
Good album.
The Rolling Stones
5/5
Top notch!
Beatles
4/5
A good album from a slowly evolving band.
3/5
Crosby, Stills & Nash
5/5
A near perfect album. Can you believe Apple Records passed on them?
David Bowie
3/5
I’m not a fan of Bowie’s electronic experimental music which is present throughout this album.
Billy Bragg
4/5
Good album.
Marilyn Manson
1/5
No thanks.
Al Green
3/5
One great song on an ok album.
Duran Duran
4/5
Fun album. Not as great as I thought it would be since it gets a lot of hype.
Love
3/5
Decent album. The Rolling Stones song “She’s a Rainbow” sounds a lot like “She Comes in Colors.” This predates the Stones’ song.
The Beach Boys
4/5
I really liked this album. I’ve never heard the BBs do a blues song. Kinda fun.
2/5
A little too many sonic displays for my liking.
Marvin Gaye
3/5
It was just ok. Not really distinguishable from any other r&b/soul from that era. A little disappointing actually.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Paint it Black is my favorite Stones song. Other than Under My Thumb, this album is pretty mediocre.
Rush
3/5
It’s fine. Not great, just fine.
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
So many excellent songs on this album.
T. Rex
4/5
I haven’t listened to much T. Rex before now. I liked this album.
Rush
3/5
A couple really great songs. The rest of the album is meh.
Deep Purple
2/5
I liked Highway Star and Smoke on the Water. Space Truckin’ is an example of why I don’t generally care for live albums. It goes on forever and has a lot of random sonic acrobatics that just isn’t enjoyable if you aren’t at the concert.
New York Dolls
4/5
I like this straight forward rock/punk album.
Kraftwerk
3/5
Pixies
3/5
A few good tunes on here. Interesting that some of the songs have a ska feel to them. Overall this is a pretty good album.
Beastie Boys
4/5
A really solid album. I forgot how much I liked these songs as a kid.
The Pogues
3/5
A few good tunes here. Overall, I don’t think I like Irish music enough to listen to an entire album of it. It is good in small doses.
Bee Gees
2/5
Interesting folk rock/slightly psychedelic album. I listened to it twice thinking it would grow on me. It did not.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4/5
Solid album with some interesting songs that are outside of what I normally think of when I think about Tom Petty. One sounded like it would be from the Talking Heads or B-52s.
Mudhoney
3/5
Much better than I anticipated. Not really my style though.
David Bowie
3/5
Bowie seems to be hit or miss. This was a miss for me, but the album was still decent.
Pink Floyd
5/5
A great album.
Pink Floyd
4/5
This is one of those albums that I could have playing in the background on repeat all day long and just enjoy the ambiance.
Minutemen
4/5
This was a pretty good album. Some good songs among the 40+ songs. I liked it.
XTC
4/5
A really solid album with some eclectic songs. I’ve never listened to this band before. I’m going to check out some of their other albums.
The Smiths
4/5
Enjoyable.
Arrested Development
4/5
I really like this album. Reminds me of a gentler Public Enemy.
Le Tigre
4/5
This seemed much older than 1999. I would have pegged the music style as from the 80’s. Fun and high energy songs.
Wilco
4/5
I haven’t listened to much Wilco. This album is really good. Some songs remind me of the Rolling Stones.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
Amazing album. A couple throw away songs but the rest is outstanding. I actually really liked the first song on the album. Great riffs.
Thin Lizzy
4/5
This is a great live album. I didn’t know many of the songs but they all were good songs. Huey Lewis on harmonica!
The Prodigy
2/5
I don’t get this.
The Clash
5/5
Iconic album with many different musical genres mixed in.
Tangerine Dream
3/5
I kinda liked it. Mellow electronic music is soothing.
Soul II Soul
2/5
It’s ok. I remember one of the songs from back in the 90s that got a lot of airplay. I’m not a dance music fan though.
Radiohead
4/5
Super mellow. Would be a good Sunday morning album.
Public Enemy
4/5
I sometimes think how much better PE would be without hype man, Flavor Flav. Chuck D is amazing and carries an awesome group.
5/5
Probably Bowie’s finest album. Although, I’m partial to the A side of Low.
Baaba Maal
4/5
A good album to zone out to.
Mekons
3/5
It was ok.
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
Chicago
3/5
Alice In Chains
3/5
Not much of a Alice in Chains fan. I think this was probably their most popular album.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Fun album that reminds me of a more soulful Theme from Shaft.
Cream
5/5
Super group comprised of Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton. This is a fantastic album. If I recall correctly, Tales of Brave Ullyses was one of the first song to feature a wah-wha pedal.
Yes
4/5
A better album tham I expected. I enjoyed the whimsical nature of a couple songs.
Jane's Addiction
2/5
I bought this album not long after it came out because everyone loved this album. I tried to like it then, but didn't. I tried to like it now, but I still don't.
The Monks
3/5
This album sounded pretty ordinary for the time period. I don't get why it is on the list other than some protest lyrics.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
5/5
Really solid psychedelic and blues album. Really good.
Tom Waits
4/5
A great eclectic listen. Downtown Train is an all-timer.
Judas Priest
4/5
I’m surprised that I liked this album as much as I did. Almost has a bit of a punk feel to it.
Marvin Gaye
3/5
Meh. Lots of redundancy in this one.
Kacey Musgraves
2/5
Something about this didn’t work for me. It’s like the album is trying to hard to be light and carefree.
Sade
3/5
MC Solaar
3/5

Def Leppard
4/5
The Temptations
4/5
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
It’s is an ok album.
Soundgarden
3/5
A few good tunes on here including Fell on Black Days and Black Hole Sun. The rest is a little heavier than I prefer.
50 Cent
2/5
I’m not big on the language in the lyrics. I’m old. The music is fine though.

Reminds me a bit of Neil Diamond. I enjoyed this album.
Dead Kennedys
2/5
Meh
Billy Joel
5/5
A superb album by a national treasure
Talking Heads
4/5
The Monkees
4/5
That first song sounds like it belongs on Ticket to Ride or Rubber Soul with a little Pinball Wizard lick thrown in at the beginning. Interesting album that would have been amazing if it hit two years earlier.
D'Angelo
3/5
Meh
Muddy Waters
5/5
I love some Muddy Waters.
Elvis Presley
2/5
I expected more from this album. Dr. Evil seems to have stolen his mojo.
