A fine example of 80s pop. I'm not sure what makes it an "unmissable" album, though

5-Star Albums (92)

pretentious, artsy nonsense
What a lovely blend of styles, speeds, and sounds. Bonnie sounds great across the board.
not my usual, but very engaging
Apparently it's one of the greats but you have to listen to it 7+ times to "get it". Until then, it's atonal, stream-of-consciousness, free-association junk.

Sorry, just not my cup of tea. I don't enjoy the screaming and dissonant tones and explicit content.
Generally mellow, but some surprisingly punchy songs, too
A fine example of 80s pop. I'm not sure what makes it an "unmissable" album, though
most of it sounds like it belongs with a Bond movie from the 70s
so smooth, so cool
not a fan of Janis Joplin's screaming style of singing
I know some will scream sacrilege at only 4 stars, and while I enjoy it, it's not my jam
Sorry. An album with every track tagged explicit? Can't do it.
hadn't heard of "speed metal" before, but it fits; these songs have a very fast tempo
sounds like you'd expect
drab, bland
not my regular jam, but understandable lyrics and interesting, layered music in a laid-back style
just noisy trash
very jazz, not too out there
basic 90s pop
This one probably deserves another listen
Solid!
grunge but not too angry
just noise
lots of honky tonk
Not really noteworthy
long tracks, I get a Snarky Puppy vibe from many of these, not to mention Guardians 2 end credits from "Any You and I"
just angry noise
intro dialog is annoying but the music is great; interesting variety
hits are real bangers, covers are meh
2 hr 45 min! Only listened to disc 1, but the lyrics are charming
just angry noise
yes, THAT Layla; songs are heavy on instrumentals
not my jam, some swearing, but overall not bad
not bad for post-punk
acoustic guitar and solo voice, very mellow
not my usual, but very engaging
it's fine but just meh...
2nd disc is a whole different experience and pulls the album up from a 2; pretty raunchy lyrics throughout, though
surprisingly big sound for the early 80s
some great ones in there... and some forgettable ones, too
good enough to listen twice
I'm sure it was a touchstone for the genre and culturally relevant but it just isn't my jam
I don't know what he's saying, but it sounds fun
Imagine (song) is legendary, but the rest isn't all that great
classic grunge, last song is a bit much
not your "classic" Beach Boys album, a lot more politically aware and less "young and fun"
Perfect example of the genre and artist and it just kills
very chill Americana folk
wouldn't listen to again due to the explicit lyrics, but musically interesting
definitely heavy metal
Interesting mix of mellow and screaming tracks. Rates a 4 because of the breadth of musicality across the double album
Chock full of holiday hits you hear on the radio
really interesting blend of world and trance beats; The Conference has some crazy-impressive tongue work
middle-of-the-road, mellow acoustic rock
snappy, uptempo beats; first two tracks are fun, rest are more punk
raunchy at times, but on brand
just fun jazz
Broken pianos are no match for this legend
So much more than just "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2"
screamy but not annoyingly, interesting guitar work
Some real solid covers
some great blues instrumentals
What a gem
Unapologetically screamin'
Wow, "Racing in the Street" is something else. How have I not heard this song before?
What a lovely voice! I thoroughly enjoyed the "live" aspect of this, especially when she forgets the lyrics and just rolls with it.
I can't put my finger on why, but this album just speaks to me
loud and relentless, but that's on brand
Solid album
Folk/country really isn't my jam and Cash's voice usually bothers me but this album blew me away. What great storytelling and compelling musicality across all the tracks! It may be full of covers, but each is excellent; familiar yet perfectly matched to Cash's style.
I just don't vibe with the atonality and bizarre aspects of experimental music
I do not understand why people like Pink Floyd so much.
The hits are undeniable bangers but the rest are vulgar and forgettable
Can't knock the queen
I'm not usually a fan of Elvis, but there were some great songs in here
sounds like the most fun that could be had in a prison
Deserves to be on this list. So many familiar tones, riffs, and beats that clearly inspired later artists and samples.
Standard version is ridiculously vulgar, clean version is mid
funky nonsense
Smooth is right, the album flows from one song to the next with no real bumps or distinguishing features for each track. The opener is certainly a standout track but the rest are pretty vanilla.
I don't know if I'm smart enough for Jazz
loud and proud of it
I'm sure it was important to the genre but yuck
Roygbiv is the only interesting song in the bunch
Sounds fun and folksy but those lyrics are dark
Is it music? Technically, I guess. Does it inspire, enrich, or connect with the listener? Not this particular human.
Lovely album and if nothing else took me down a fascinating rabbit hole on "Mbube/The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
I've never seen such a stacked second half of an album. Classic!
I can't put my finger on exactly what elevates this to a 5, but it definitely deserves it. I listened to it four times throughout the day; I just kept getting pulled back to it.
Other than being too long and the songs being too loosely coupled to form a cohesive whole, it's wonderful
you've heard one song, you've heard them all
I mean, how could I not give it 5 stars?
"Tainted Love" is the only real standout
Shiver is okay but the rest are just meh. If I wanted to hear spoken-singing, I'd listen to Cake; their songs are are fun at least
Thrash metal indeed
Apparently it's one of the greats but you have to listen to it 7+ times to "get it". Until then, it's atonal, stream-of-consciousness, free-association junk.
I don't know how you scream like that for an hour but somehow they manage. Is it metal? Very. Would I subject my ears to it again. Nope.
Mostly harmless
unapologetically southern rock
trippy, ambient, and abstract but not in a jarring or nonsensical way
Mellow jazz, very approachable. This is the stuff you introduce people to jazz with before you dive into the deep end with Coltrane or Mingus
Modern? Experimental? Art? Garbage? Yes to all
Wow, that's a lot of vulgar language. They sure tell a story, though.
They've done it again! Not as good as Cosmo's Factory, but close
Good grief is Tom Waits awful
5 stars all the way. It's amazing how much great music they packed into 8 tracks and 30 minutes.
72 minutes of angry screaming
Solid, enjoyable punk
Granted, I don't speak Spanish so I have no idea what the songs are about. That said, fun music and enjoyable to listen to.
Country is not really my thing but she sounds great
Maybe a 4, but it was a little too meandering in style and composition for my taste.
No real standout tracks but interesting lyrically and musically. Variety of styles made it a little jilting.
wow that's explicit and vulgar
Unexpectedly good
Lovely melding of these two great singers
The two halves of this album make for an interesting combination, like two sides of the same coin; complementary but distinct. I prefer "The Lyre of Orpheous" half for pure musicality. Sounds a bit like Tom Waits but actually musical and enjoyable to listen to.
So many wonderful songs
lovely tracks that highlight a great voice
What a lovely blend of styles, speeds, and sounds. Bonnie sounds great across the board.
long but interesting
I do not understand why he has five albums on this list. This is probably my top pick of the five, but boy are they just meh.
Just lovely
not my jam but undeniably great for what it is
No real standout tracks but consistent throughout
Not sure how a Bollywood soundtrack snuck on the list, but it wasn't terrible
I was going to give it a 4 but after compulsively listening to it another three times throughout the day, decided it has an undeniable appeal and deserves that extra star.
pretentious, artsy nonsense
Certainly was noisy
Mellow and long but not bad
dreamy, trippy, I imagine it pairs well with being high
China Girl almost pulls it up to a 3
All French, all live, all highlighting Brel's voice and musicality
Not bad but nothing to really write home about
I could see myself throwing this album on when working in the yard or garage
Such a lovely voice, highlighted by the arrangements. You can hear the raw potential. I wonder how much further she would have risen had her brother not held her back.
