I liked the anger but the actual music behind the lyrics I found to be pretty boring. Maybe I'm used to this kind of rage in music now because people like the Sex Pistols paved the way after a pretty chill time.
It's very nice. The sound of the instruments is smooth. It reminds me of the Sim City soundtracks that I like, this sort of music must be the inspiration. I don't think it's an album I would listen to again necessarily but can definitely see myself putting it on for a dinner party. I don't know if that's an insult.
Very mopey. I don't think I'd listen to it again. Very emotional, but not the emotions that I want rattling around my head I guess. I do want to like it though.
I liked it. It had a vibe. I used to write off that 80s sound but I think I quite like it now. Lots of cool sounds used interestingly. Still not sure if I'd have it on regularly but a couple of stand out songs.
It's a good sound and I can see how it has inspired a couple of my favourite bands like TOOL with the unusual rhythms and dueling guitars and even The Decemberists for long epic songs. I don't think I quite liked the sound enough to want to listen to the length of tracks there. I don't think they put their best foot forward with the beginning of the 18 minutes track. Somewhere halfway through I started to like the harmonies they had and it sounded a bit more coherent.
Liked it on the first listen. I think I'll listen to it again. There's a rather unique, ethereal quality to it.
I didn't get around to listening to it again today -_- But I can see myself listening to this album again in the future.
This is so good I can't believe I haven't properly listened before. Listened to it again straight away. The energy is really good. All the instruments sound fantastic, and have a consistent sound throughout but none of the songs blend together.
I listened to it three times and I'll be checking out other Hendrix albums.
Good music, unlike anything I've ever heard. Like a Jazzy Ludovico Einaudi. It certainly doesn't sound like it's from the 70s.
I was initially dreading jumping into another prog rock but the riffs and noises they were making were really good! (When they weren't doing their own radio space opera). They seemed to be having a lot of fun which comes through.
Not my jam. I found it difficult to take in the lyrics, which I imagine is the main focus of this music.
Standout Track: Worms
Pretty cool. Better than I expected. I've always imagined Jay Z as more refined/corporate or more of a collaborator. Guess I'm not quite old enough.
Standout Track: Takeover
New Wave?! NEW wave? But what's this?! Trumpets?! Funky rhythm guitars?! Samba drums?
Evidently I don't know what new wave is, but this is amazing.
Standout Track: Calling Captain Autumn
It's pretty cool. It's just not quite my vibe, which is odd as I do like Disturbed. I don't like the guy's voice too much and a lot of the tracks seem too similar.
Standout Track: Dawn Patrol
This is the first album from this list that I'd already listened to. I'm a fan of Sigur Ros so I already knew that I'd like it.
Fantastic album. I hadn't appreciated how old the album was, the range of sounds that they managed to get in there was amazing. I also looked up the lyrics for the first time and now I'm a bit traumatised.
The hits are great but the songs that were new to me were just kinda, well....
Standout Track: Dirty Diana
Yeah that was pretty good. I think I find a whole album of this middle of the road stuff fairly dull but this was more interesting than I'd given it credit for when I filed it away in my brain somewhere.
Standout Track: Narcissist
Fucking amazing.
Standout Track: Waking the Witch
Dullllllll, couldn't finish.
I liked this more than I thought. Maybe it's because it's sunny right now but feel like I'm in a hazy US street. The album is short in tracks but the whole vibe is very cool.
Standout Track: T.V. Eye
Nothing really stood out to me.
A little indistinct in my opinion and possibly I feel it's a bit dated. I think my flavour of protest/angst music is a bit different.
Standout track: Hoodoo Voodoo
Simple but strong. Sounds like a blast, I reckon everyone must wish they were in the room with an instrument, even a tambourine, just to get involved. Or just me?
Standout track: I've got my mojo working
Brilliant, I'm very surprised I haven't heard of her. Good tracks
Standout Track: Ex-Factor
Very hard to rate this. The bits I like, I really like and the bits I don't, I really don't. I enjoy the experimental sounds and the interesting instrumentation, I do not enjoy Thom's voice or some of the meandering tracks.
This should be right up my alley. I feel I missed out on them when I was younger. Listened to Muse instead probably. It has at least convinced me to listen to more.
Standout track: Everything In It's Right Place
Very evocative, lovely sounds. I think the album feels a bit of a slog as the tracks do sound similar. But no individual track brought it down. Makes me feel like I'm in the middle of a party.
Standout track: So Many Sides Of You
Enjoyed this. Hadn't heard most of them before. I like the unusual sounds she makes though her voice can drag a little sometimes.
Standout track: Sober II (Melodrama)
A pretty dark album. The whole thing feels pretty strung out and puts me on edge.
Standout track: The Passenger
I didn't quite like it as much as I felt I should, though I do suspect that if I were there live it would have been much more enjoyable. I thought the tracks meandered a lot.
Standout track: I'll Go Crazy
It's a shame they chucked this at me right after the James Brown Live at the Apollo album as they've both blended together in my mind. I think I preferred this to James Brown, though I was shocked by some of the banter depicting some casual domestic violence. Anyways, the music was good, obviously, but I hope that I'll get given a studio album.
Standout Track: How Blue Can You Get?
Another album to rid me of my 80s distaste. I love the clear sounds. The bass is always stabbing through the rest of the music.
Standout track: I mean... it's gotta be Rio
Not crazy about it. Hopefully some newer FF albums turn up on here. Or I could just listen on my own initiative, shocker.
Standout track: Good Grief
I think it's a shame that this has popped up before any other Johnny Cash albums (I assume he's made it elsewhere in this list) as I felt the whole album was a bit slow and meandering. It seemed like something which would hit a bit harder having more context around the guy. As it was I did not find it very engaging. I'll come back to it. It does have the fantastic cover of Hurt on though. Despite being a big NIN fan, I think this version is truly the natural manifestation of that song.
Standout track: We'll Meet Again
I liked this. I wonder how much of that is some sort of historical cultural tourism where I associate this sound with cool 60s/70s movies. I dunno, but I liked it.
Standout track: Green River
I quite liked it as a vibe but I can't see myself putting it on just to listen to.
Standout Track: Chan Chan
It was alright but I think a little bland. Nothing stood out to me, though I have previously favourited Frontier Psychiatrist.
Standout track: Live at Dominos
I like the sound on some of the tracks but I'm not as into the prog-rock whirling guitar sounds that they have going on. When they did tracks I thought they were pretty good.
Standout Track: Is and Is and Is
I was down on this one as well (didn't like the Smiths album) but I didn't rate it straight away and, you know what, it's grown on me a bit. I'd say I still find the majority of the songs whiny, even though I reckon I agree with most of what he's whining about. The music itself sounds less whiny than The Smiths.
Standout Track: You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side
Oooh, I really liked this. Hadn't really listened to this one before. Shame the guy's gone off the rails as he makes good music.
Standout Track: Never Let Me Down
Not really my cup of tea, even Hotel California the track I'm not too bothered about. Not my sound.
Standout track: Life in the Fast Lane
Pretty good. Never heard of this guy before. Not much to really make my ears perk up. A bit DJ Shadow-ish but none of the big beats (tm).
Standout Track: Lever Street
Not my usual cup of tea but on my second listen I found more to like about it. I couldn't comment on how it sounded when it was released but some songs sounded quite bold. My standout track was, by FAR, the most listened to on the album according to Spotify.
Standout Track: Boxcars
Ooh baby. Lots on here that I hadn't actually heard before. It's ridiculous (E-mail My Heart) but I kinda love it. Chose my standout track as I hadn't heard it before and it instantly makes me think of school discos and not having to give a shit about anything.
Standout Track: Soda Pop
Whoooa, this is really good! I'm assuming it's a remastered album I listened to as it sounds very clean. Much better than I'd given them credit for in my narrow, narrow mind. I reckon this would've been a 4 but because it finishes with Free Bird I'm pumping it up.
Standout Track: Simple Man
I couldn't quite get into this. I've liked one of their songs already which I do really like (Lemon Glow) but this album was very different. That's how artists and albums work though. This one just wasn't for me.
Standout Track: Take Care
Not heard this album before and I quite like Queens of the Stone Age. I don't like it quite as much as the stuff of theirs I already know but their overall sound is as good as ever, with the screeching guitars and driving bass. Liked it.
Standout Track: If Only
I did not like this and found it very difficult to pick a standout track. I do not like the guy's voice, I do not like the instrumentation, I do not like the energy of the songs.
Standout Track: The Cutter
This didn't really click with me. I'm not a big fan of that old symphonic band for lead singer sound.
Standout Track: Son of a Preacher Man
Actually liked this a lot less than I thought I would. The whole vibe of the album is creepy and off to me. It does not have the charm of the Britney Spears album I listened to and very little interesting music stuff to go on. And his voice is dull.
Standout Track: Senorita
Really enjoyed this. Not what I was expecting. Good melodies.
Standout track: One of Them
A surprise hit for me! Not that I was expecting to dislike it but it certainly grew on me more than I thought. Perhaps I should review albums on the day they get released to me because I had this and "Can't Buy A Thrill" very close together and I think I formed my opinion on both of them simultaneously.
I like the sweet melancholy that they've created and the stories they're telling with each track. Very close standout track was Charlie Freak.
Standout Tracks: Barrytown
Again, I really liked this. They really play with different instruments and let them stand out. Each track has a strong character. I think I slightly preferred Pretzel Logic but it's close. Close standout track was Kings. Had this close choice for both the albums.
Standout track: Fire in the Hole
I struggled with this. I consider myself pretty open minded with music and I enjoy a lot of sounds which others would consider noise or incoherent but I found it hard to take something away from this. After reading up it seems like a lot of the acclaim for this album comes from comparing it to their previous.
I couldn't...
Standout track:
Daft Punk are one of my favourite acts, and they have put out so many albums I consider to be fucking brilliant. Despite this, I've never properly enjoyed this one. I can see how this album needed to happen to pave the way for the rest but the strict house-ness doesn't quite hit for me. I am a huge fan of the sounds that they've managed to create here though. The crunchy punchy noises throughout are a joy. Overall, not an album I'd put on but I can enjoy it to a degree.
Standout Track: Da Funk
Again, this music isn't usually my jam and there's nothing on this album which really changes my mind on that. I like the strong sense of character (presumably Dolly's herself?) I get from the album. And obviously the title track is very evocative. I'm just not a big fan of the music behind the songs.
Standout track: Travelling Man
An interesting concept album. I don't think I'd listen to individual tracks necessarily but at a whole it's very cohesive.
Standout track: Yes Sir, No Sir
I like Metallica. I think this album is just alright, Master of Puppets is a banger, obviously, but I think a lot of the others do the same thing as that song but slightly worse. Orion was a surprise, I hadn't heard that before and enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to any other Metallica albums which turn up.
Standout Track: Orion (Instrumental)
This is such a lively album. I love the instrumentation here and the energy is a treat, however, I really struggle to engage with his singing style. Even on Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes, a song which has been deep in my soul since I can remember, I enjoy despite his singing. I love the inspiration he's obviously got from other cultures and I think he manages to let them shine while keeping the music his own here. Also, You Can Call Me Al is sublime.
Standout Track: Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes
This music doesn't do much for me but it's fun hearing the audience in this one and the guy clearly has a commanding stage presence.
Standout Track: San Quentin
I enjoyed this more than I expected. The sounds were very modern and the whole album had an energetic melancholy I really liked.
However I found myself enjoying a song and then it would turn around into something else for the chorus/verse which I enjoyed less!
Standout Track: But I'm Different Now
I couldn't get into this much. First WTC I've properly listened to but nothing stood out to me on this album.
Standout Track: C.R.E.A.M (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)
There were glimmers of music which I could enjoy in here but they were few, far between and didn't last long. I think that enjoying this sort of music takes a lot of work, which I'm not prepared to put in for this.
A great example of music I wouldn't look twice at normally but that I quite enjoyed. The opening track really hooked me in. It has an epic but ethereal quality. I don't think I'd put this on often but I think it's really well made, the instruments sound good and he has a swell voice (crooner).
Standout Track: The Seventh Seal
Really liked this. I haven't listened to much Bowie. This is an interesting little album. He does write catchy tunes but I have to admit I need some more time to warm up to him as a singer. I also really enjoyed the instrumental tracks here. A great range. Looking forward to going through more albums which I assume will pop up.
Standout Track: Moss Garden
Did not dig this. Spotify describes them as the "archetypal jam band" and it feels like it. Like sitting in on someone else's workshop session. There are good bits but not worth the time in my opinion. Maybe they have some more focused songs on other albums and maybe this creates a great vibe live but not for me in this form.
Standout Track (..?): The Eleven
I'd never considered listening to these guys beyond Dreaming of You. The album was better than I imagined but didn't blow me away. I like the instrumentation, they use some interesting sounds. I didn't find any songs I prefer to the big one though.
Standout Track: Dreaming of You
Enjoyed this. Never listened to Springsteen. I definitely enjoy his more energetic songs here to the slower ones. Candy's Room absolutely blew me away. What a song! Close choice between that and Adam Raised A Cain.
Standout Track: Candy's Room
Enjoyed this. I haven't listened to much of his work and this is obviously relatively recent. The baseline in You Want It Darker is piercing but I had to resist choosing that as my standout track as I've had that in my playlists for ages. Steer Your Way has an almost jovial fiddle/violin tune which comes as a sort of relief when it hits during the song.
Standout Track: Steer Your Way
I couldn't get into this or connect with it in any way. A good thing I can say about it is that I enjoyed the ethereal quality of the sound. I didn't find it exciting or sobering or thought provoking.
Standout Track: Winter Song
It was ok. I wasn't blown away. I haven't listened to a lot of Elton John and this wasn't the one to convince me to listen to more. I expect, though, that more will come.
Standout track: Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)
Liked this album. I was surprised it was '98, it sounds newer. I don't think the tracks are transcendent or anything but they definitely sound a bit timeless. I think this kind of music is perhaps being done better now but this stuff is iconic.
Standout Track: Praise You
Considering that I can definitely hear this band's influence in a lot of the artists that I have listened to over the years, I was not enamored with this album.
Standout Track: Is She Weird
Definitely my jam from when I was back in school. This is an album full of great riffs and lyrics you can join in with. I think this is an album with a defining sound. Kurt's singing is probably something I would bounce off hard elsewhere but it is cemented into the sound of the music with Nirvana so strongly that it's an integral part of what makes it great. There's a lot I feel I could say.
Standout Track: Breed
An interesting album. The subject matter is quite intense which is at odds with the upbeat music. I think I'm put off a bit by the "jam-band" element of it.
Standout Track: Zombie
It's a bit hard to approach a Coldplay album purely objectively as it is difficult to separate their "casual" reputation from the music that I'm listening to. This is a decent album, they have a good, rich sound with the piano and Clocks is so unique. I think Coldplay have a bit of an unfair shake. I think I mainly prefer the smaller songs of theirs.
Standout Track: Daylight
Enjoyed this. A good sound and I enjoy his drawling singing style. Not bangers throughout but I did enjoy.
Standout Track: Red Morning Light
Not crazy about this one.
Standout Track: Gimme Shelter
This one didn't hit quite as hard as Green River but the singer is still great and the guitars still sound good.
Standout Track: Ramble Tamble
I can't decide whether I really like this or if I find it grating. I don't think I'm a fan of the vocals. There are definitely aspects of the music that I think are unique and sound quality entering my ear. I think I would enjoy it less if it didn't sound like the whole hand was barely containing a certain type of rage.
Standout track: Fascination Street
Loved this. This hit me hard and swept me up and along until the end. The songs are extremely varied but all have their place. I've listened to some Bjork before but never album by album. That will change now.
Standout Track: Big Time Sensuality
Not hitting. I don't think any of these songs were enjoyable enough to justify their length. In particular, the bass stood out as grating to me, like the wind getting caught in a small gap in a car window going down the motorway making your ears go.
Standout Track: A Venture
This is a very smokey album. The album has very strong character which helps me get immersed in the slow progression of each song, but it does mean I struggle to differentiate individual songs.
Standout Track: I Don't Get It
Good, but I feel it stretches out the schtick a bit too much. It's not an album that earns a listen in its entirety in one sitting.
Standout track: Apache
Amazing singing. Classic composition. It feels very powerful.
Standout track: A Change Is Gonna Come
A unique vocalist. And the drumming has be a very organic sound. Some of the tracks feel like jam sessions though which isn't really my jam.
Standout track: Combination of the Two
I went into this not expecting much as this particular brand of rock has never stood out to me as being very interesting. It definitely had a lot of tracks that did the aural equivalent of making my eyes go unfocused but there were some cool sounds and intros to songs that surprised me.
Standout track: Water Song / Janie's Got A Gun
Coming in expecting to like this album, I was left feeling like it was up and down. I think I prefer their more unusual and less conventional songs on this one. The combination of her voice (which is striking) and the screeching guitars begins to grate over the course of this album.
Standout Track: Man
Great album! The only thing stopping it from being a 5 is that there are two trakcs I wasn't super into. The rest are all bangers with an amazing combination of the guitars, bass and drums. I especially enjoy their use of empty space in their songs.
Standout Track: Closer
Better than I expected.
Standout track: Rumour Has It
Standout Track: Feel to Believe
Standout Track: Tales Of Brave Ulysses
Standout Track: Sex Dwarf
Ok, I've definitely been missing out on Billy Joel. This was fantastic.
Standout Track: Only the Good Die Young
Standout Track: Lively Up Yourself
Very interesting. I think it would be 5/5 if it were shorter. I did not enjoy all tracks the same amount but I enjoyed some of them a lot. Concept is fun.
Standout Track: Is There Anybody Out There?
Not my jam at all. There was nothing of interest for me here.
Not my jam but I can't put my finger on why. It feels like not my type of lazy.
Standout track: Hotwax
