Great way to start. Obvious life-time icon tracks here. Not something I would listen to every day but very happy to finally hear it in full.
Would love to give this 3.5 - so close to a 4... An album I missed at the time (there was a bit going on in 93...), but enjoyed the chance to visit it now. Oh heck, factor in 101 and its a 4.
Great album. Definitely worthy of 3.5. Just not a 4 for me.
Great debut - 2 or 3 songs probably still in every setlist till this day. Apparently Steve Harris was always that good.
Never been a big Billy Joel fan, just never got it. Never liked pop singles like Tell Her and Start the Fire.
But. Now I am an old fart and know where the Mets colours come from, listening to the first half a dozen tracks from Stranger. I get it now.
Nice to revisit this after all these years where it's not One Of Many flowing into the studio. 3.5
Coming into this I had no idea if I was going to give it 3 or 5. Played and heard it sooooo many times a lot of it's lost its edge. But jumping over Spirit and starting listening with Bloom made it an easy 5. It changed the fucking world.
Nope. just can't do mediocre prog-rock.
Not heard of these guys before but very much enjoyed this. 3.5
Always been a fan of Joan but don't think I was ever able to go back to some of the older stuff. Nice.
For some reason I didn't hate it like I wanted to.
Great to revisit this album. Had to listen a couple of times to get past a few things, but really enjoyed this.
This was OK but I found most of it pretty average and forgettable.
5/5 for Seven Nation Army. But the rest of White Stripes has alway just been Meh to me. really wanted to get more out of this album.
Didn't mind it but quickly became background dull noise. Another "rapper of the month" putting out same dull urban crap.
All just a bit of a yawn really.
Kinda expected this to be an automatic 5, I almost gave it 3. Brilliant at their best, much of it felt like filler. Can't say I am a huge Beatles fan, but I do respect them. Probably first time listening to this in entirety. Dunno - just expected more from the songs I hadn't heard 1000 times before.
Just found this very disappointing compared to their earlier work. Felt like an AI Musak compilation of some decent Orbital songs.
Probably a 2.5 for me but feeling soft after a couple of 1's. Great to actually hear Steve Winwood in this environment with a decent band. I liked his solo stuff but was completely overwhelmed with the radio play of it.
One of my all time favourites. No idea how a band puts this together for their first release. Brilliant.
Oooooooooooooooooooh yeah....
Kept reminding me of Underworld and early Prince which can't be a bad thing.
Not even listening to this fool just in case he gets the $0.0003 for it.
Still think she was massively over-rated. But this was pretty good to listen to without the hype behind it.
The boy could write a great pop song. Does drag out a bit - probably trying to fill the 80 min CD.
Hmm genuinely thought I would like this more. Much like in the 80's though, I found myself wanting to skip over the filler to the main songs.
Initially thought this might be a 4, couple of all time classic songs. But the rest didn't do much for me.
He's pretty bloody good isn't he. No idea why I don't listen to tom as much as I used too.
I assume this ended at some point... Needs a Mr Steinman and Mr Loaf to carry this kind of thing off.
Almost felt like a trick question - Is it epic? Or just a bit crap? Hmm, can't deny title track and Passenger, but the rest a bit meh.
Excruciating almost perfection.
Wasn't a fan of this when I first heard it - just a bit too different. But came to love it and the new direction. Fantastic cap of an album for such a diverse band.
DJ concept albums. Surely we are not encouraging this???
Pure pop. Pure perfection. Celebrate the 2 minute pop song!
Brilliant set of songs sequenced to take you on a journey. Never really got tired of listening to this album and all the singles from it.
Normally don't mind east-coast rap but this just didn't do it for me
One point for Country and Western but bonus point for the best name on the list so far.
Knee's up! Respect to those that came before.
I remember getting this (and then Hysteria) when they first came out and wondering what the rest of the world was waiting for. 12 months later....
Probably a 3.5 but just for giggles I am going to round up for a change. Because Photograph.
Like most Stones albums - a couple of all time iconic songs, and a bunch of others to round it out.
I loved Pepper and we played the crap out of it. But even back then I couldn't find much else to like.
Didn't grab me at first I think there is something there I will enjoy again.
The funny bit is where I would give this anything other than a 5. Blessed to have known them forever.
Listened to a lot of Sly over the year - mostly Hits collections as they have put out some bangers. Heard this one a fews. I like it but it's not something I would revisit much over an Essentials playlist.
Never really listened to much Black Sabbath. I think the avatar of Ozzie always put me off. But I enjoyed this and obviously sets up everything to come.
Not a fan, but not terrible.
Have listened to these guys quite a few time and always enjoyed it.
First time really listening to the band. Heard them lots before here and there but never really went out of my way. Enjoyed it.
Always liked the pop of JMC. We played the heck out of Automatic, especially Head On. Great debut album this.
Barely better than his first album on here. Actually, not really. Very dull. Amazing he gets two listings and others get none.
Started really fun and fresh but Jesus it got annoying after a while. 15-20 mins of this would be perfect and 3.
Only the really bad-ass kids at school would listen to Black Flag and Damage. I was not one of them at the time, but I think I kinda wanted to be. Finally got into them during my very late nights on radio. Turn it up!
At first going in I thought, I've heard this a 1000 times, easy 3. Then mebbe it's a 4? Hell is it a 5? Can't think of a more perfect example of 80's UK pop.
I know every one of these songs backwards (Hi, Kylie), even though I was a Howard Jones / Spandau fan at the time. Not to mention the videos.
(Small trivia - they recently found the girl from the cover. Great story - I always figured she was just a made up pic)
Yeah - it's a damn 5.
Do I really have to listen to this muppet? Has to be in the top 5 overrated artists ever.
Record is ok - can't help thinking it sounds like outtakes from Prince & NPG music from the 90's - and that's pretty bad if they didn't want to release it.
For some reason, 2, not 1. I'm not happy about it.
Even for a 60's folk muppet this guy is terribly boring.
Didn't love it - Didn't hate it.
Nice. Didn't mind it. would have been happier stopping half way. Was edging a 3 until then.
Not a huge country music fan but you can't help but respect these three and this terrific piece of work. I imagine for fans this would have been epic.
Think I first listened to this years ago. Probably liked it then but I definitely appreciated it more now. Great stuff.
Love me some Leonard but only listened to this album in full last year I think. Terrific stuff. Couple of all time gems on here.
Couldn't find this album so listened to the iTunes SoHo set. Liked it.
Somehow missed these guys the first time round so first time listening to the album. I liked it. Reminded me of the early 90's UK pop (before Oasis fucked it up).
Didn't hate it. Didn't love it.
Love me some Ella but just not a fan of the Gershins.
Great selection of soul songs and some great takes by Otis.
Brilliant album. Probably my fav Beatles one so far. Looking forward to listening to Rubber Soul.
Obviously hadn't heard this before. It's OK. All sounds a bit same same looking back. I know She's Not There very well. This was fine 60's brit pop. 2 seemed a bit harsh. 2.5
I didn't mind this. Country is not my things but I could appreciate this album. Unlikely to listen again but I do get Dolly.
Enjoyed this a lot. Reminded me a bit of Underworld but a bit less intense.
I'll take my Queen over Dolly all day long. Still fresh today.
I had such hopes at Fever (4), but then the rest was just Elvis.
I bet he didn't smash 70 Hot Wings with his comeback after the army.
Bookended by two classic 5's and enough in the middle to push it past a 3.5.
I don't listen to enough Beck, but I enjoyed listening to this.
Weird to have two Beck albums back to back. Didn't enjoy this as much as Guero but still ok.
Wanted to like it. Some songs ok. Not so much the rest.
Enjoyed listening to the album. Never really clicked with these guys but do appreciate them.
Loooooong time Cure fan, but for whatever reason I never listened to Disintegration until almost 10 years after its release. No clue why. Even after listening to Wish / Show a bazillion times, never felt inclined to go back and listen to this. Knew all the singles of course, but not the album.
The one day in 98 I was driving around Sydney as a sales rep, decided to finally listen to this, had it on in the car. I think finally 3-4 songs in and my brain just flipped on to what I had been casually listening to. I think I sat in the carpark of the Macquarie centre for another 30 mins just listening while I waited for my appointment inside.
Probably one of my all time favourites - but I will love Wish, Bloodflowers, and Songs of a Lost World. But also - see Show if you can.
Paul and Jam another artist I should probably listen more too
I listened to this a LOT during the 80's (even had the ZZ keyring for my car). I still listen to ZZ Top a bit but haven't really heard this album for years. Surprised me how much of the "album tracks" would fit in with their regular blues rock stuff, alongside the obvious pop-singles on this album. Back in the day I'd probably want to skip over them lol
A surprisingly solid ZZ Top album.
Loads of power and energy from just 3 dudes
Enjoyed cruising through this.
Enjoyed listening to this but was a bit similar to bands like Single Gun Theory who deserve waaaaay more attention.
Really enjoyed this. Was not expecting this out of 1972.
Had such a nice run of albums that didn't suck. Over.
This album was such a big part of my living Sydney for a couple of years and still reminds me of people (ok, person) and places. Saw the last concert of the 2 year Pump tour in Sydney and it was terrible though - they were so burnt out. But otherwise great memories.
I just find her so average and tedious. So overrated. There are no less than 6 versions of this album in iTunes. Why? I feel sorry for fans of these kinds of mega artists who just get abused by "editions: to generate false listens and income.
Couple of all time classic songs and the rest is pretty good. Nile Rogers rocks.
I never understood why Pop Song 89 was released in 88. Why not just call it Pop Song 88?? Such a mix of the past and what was to come for the band. Thought a lot about giving it a 5 but was more like a 4.5.
Thought this might be interesting at first. But no, got annoying.
Surely there are better Kinks albums to come?
Probably the first (only?) album of Mum and Dad's that I got into more than them. Loved Deb and Blondie.
I got to know ELO as a kid thru Discovery / Time albums, and found this one years later via Doctor Who :) Such a great band and sound.
Utter nonsense. See also Tubular Bells.
Probably my fav Stones album from this list.
Boring. Tedious. Repetitive. How many ways can I say bad 60's folk crap that the list seems to love?
Read the notes on the album and sounds like a bit of a messy recording. I get it's subsequence influence, but not on my like of country.
I remember listening to this when Eileen first came out and wondering if they would be a one hit wonder or there was more to it. Well I don't think they had many more hits but I did enjoy the album.
I know everyone gets excited about Arcade Fire but I find them pretty dull.
Do not drive while listening to this - will cause drowsiness.
This is not the Slade you're looking for... Slayed Alive is the way.
Apart from the opening track, Mr Soul, the rest was pretty forgettable.
No surprise one of the guys behind Sade is part of Maxwell. Great album. Definitely a "new" artist to explore.
My opinion of Metallica hasn't changed much in 30+ years. Meh.
But I will give this one point each for Sandman, Unforgiven, and Nothing Else. Mostly for Sandman and the Mariano.
Really hope someone at Ample Music or Last FM don't think that I meant to listen to this on purpose. Typical 90's pretend-punk garbage.
Edit: Worked out how to delete their listened history in Last FM. Perks of being Pro - worth it.
I was not expecting better from Iggy.
I get why you put Lust for Life on this list, but a second album from the same year? Complete waste.
Oh it's fine. Bonus point for reminding my of Broken / Fixed EP and the look on my program managers face when I played it at 2 in the afternoon.
Looks creepy. Sounds creepy. Is creepy.
Umm... Yeah... It's fine. Just sounds like every other album from these guys. Backbeats and tunes are just cut and paste.
Still remember getting the CD and trying to work out what couple of tracks we would rip to 8-track for the rest of the station to play. Think I ended up donating my CD for a couple of weeks for everyone to play.
Such a great album. So glad I never got that wrapped up in it to get the tats though. 5.5
Know these songs all too well. No idea why though? Country radio growing up? Triple M Sydney? All of the above?
Nice to hear the rest of the album. See - all country needs is a bit of jazz thrown in.
Always had a complicated relationship with this album. Watched the performance on 9/MTV and initially felt a bit meh. Ignored it as just more Nirvana hype for a long time.
But gradually began to appreciate it as you could look back at the journey I think everyone was taking over those 3-4 years. It's a significant document of wanting to be allowed to change but being pretty sure the world isn't going to let you. So maybe your life as such is completed?
First time listening to Adele. Have the feeling this album would really benefit from being a big fan of 19. Or at least listened to it. It's nice work, nothing spectacular for me.
Actually kinda enjoyed listening to this. Could see me and some mates, with a six pack of good beer each, and staring into a fire for a night listening to this.
They have occasional brilliance, none of it is here.
Probably enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Not sure I have listened to Harvest before.
I liked the story about the row boat. 4.5
Hadn't heard of these guys before. Didn't mind the album. Might seek out some more later.
Somehow he has become a bit cool nowadays - I think some people think they are buying a Robbie Williams album with the cover photos... (Have we actually seen Morrissey and Robbie in the same room???)
But he really is just miserable, and not in a good way.
Added to list of bands to listen to more. Definitely fell through the cracks. Confused with band from WA?
Really enjoyed listening to this a couple of times. Looking forward to a couple more of their on the list to come.
The Split Enz album we finally had to have? Love Tim but wasn't a fan of him muscling in on the House. But looking back, this is magic, mostly.
You can like it if you want, and I respect that, but I will never listen to it again.
This was a very nice surprise. I usually prefer a little sax with my jazz, but I can hang with Miles too. This is a great combination - great drums and the piano surprised me more than once. Terrific stuff.
Actually thought this was pretty good. Honestly very different to what I was expecting from the cover - and I got the album title and band name mixed up lol
Would love to hear the dub version of this.
Born to Go is a helluva way to rip into a concert. Some great jam stuff here. Could do without the talkie talkie bits in-between but if I was ripped off my tits I'd probably be into it. Solid 3.5.
Just sounds like everything else that comes out of these bands.
So these guys are to blame?
Didn't mind this. He must be getting old...
I appreciate the dude, I really do. A pox on his family though for giving us Matchbox 20 forever. This was ok.
Had no idea that DLR wasn't the first to combine Gigolo / Nobody. But shouldn't be too surprised as I know he is a huge fan of this sort of stuff.
Not for me but it was a bit fun spending 1/2 hour in this world.
I know I know, #First. Don't care.
What the ever-loving crap is this mess?
Really enjoyed listening to this album. What a banging collection of songs / everlasting hits. Brilliant performance from the GOAT.
Yay I got to listen to Appetite for my homework. Such a great album - delivered on every angry promise it made. To me Appetite was the end point of all the hair metal bands in the 80's, we had been building to this. And maybe the success of GNR opened the door for Grunge and what was next in the 90's.
Enjoyed this, especially Pretty Green and Entertainment. But a lot of the anger is gone.
Didn't want to rush getting past this album. Gave it a few listens while I'm here. Brilliant stuff.
I think on any other Sunday this would get a 2, or maybe a 4. But I'll give it a 3 for giving me the Black Crowes.
A little (very) confused as to why this is listed here and not Breakfast in America? This was fine, but not great.
Neil is a very tedious, very overrated, nutty old man.
Such a great album and artist. Add to the list of wanting to listen to more.
Interesting album and artist. Kept drifting into Sade territory for me. Lovely French pop.
Never wanted to rate something 0 more. I would actually consider looking into how I can remove this garbage from my play history on Apple Music. Certainly will be deleting from Last FM.
Just .... ew.
Like most New Order albums there are a couple of epic 5 star tracks, and the rest not so much. But this one holds up bit better than most. Was going to go 3 but deserves a 4.
Didn't mind this. Didn't love it. Unlikely to come this way again.
Some absolute career defining highlights (Rent, It's a Sin, Heart, and fine, What Have I Done to Deserve This). Songs I still listen to regularly nearly 40 years later. Some brilliant pop, important cultural messages, keeping strong to their identity without making it "the thing".
Probably not as constantly great as the Please debut, or the Behaviour third album which I still think is their best, a damn good album.
Currently #49 on my all time LastFM play list.
Definitely was not my favourite Pet Shop Boys album at the time, just couldn't get into it. Very different world in 1993. At the time I read so many great reviews for it though - just didn't click with me. But years later I would hear songs on compilations that I liked and many came from here.
Can You Forgive Her, Wouldn't Normally Do, Liberation, Yesterday, Speak is a Sin, and the "hidden" Go West. But no Absolutely Fabulous!!
Disco 2 - released the year after - was a great version of Very.
Probably haven't listened to Jimi Hendrix deliberately since I was a kid in the 70's (ditto Beatles for those taking notes)...
Some moments of absolute brilliance, with lots of indulgence in-between. Kinda explains Princes first album a lot too...
OK FINE. I get it now. Happy Dave and Phil??
Always nice to meet another Michael Quinn...
After reminding myself of the sporadic awesomeness from the albums and singles before and after this record, I listened to this LP.
Um.... what? This is so meh. Terrific example of lazy 90's BritPop followup albums when no matter what you do, NME is going to suck your cock.
I can see we are going to be very good friends...
First new artist from this project that I will be adding to my favourites going forward.
Longtime Coltrane fan, but I can definitely appreciate the work of Monk, Rollins, and Henry here.
I respect Elvis for his massive once in a generation influence for bringing rock and blues to the white masses. Dad loved him.
Am I Elvis or Beatles fan? Alway Rolling Stones.
To me this would be like some white guy covering Prince or James Brown.
It's fine. Just not for me. Would I listen to it again? No. That's what 2 stars will probably mean for me.
So many great originals mixed in with perfect covers done in their own way.
Always found it hard to get into Pornography (and Faith) for some reason. Appreciate them both more the last few years as I have watched many live concerts on YouTube from the last tour, and live is where the indulgent magic happens with The Cure - especially for these songs.
Hadn't heard of these guys before but I liked the album. Plan to explore a bit more.
I remember playing Move Any Mountain a lot when I first started DJ'ing (and of course Ebeneezer Goode). The rest of the album is "of its time" like this band always was. Good album but not something I will listen to again.
Don't think I have ever listened to this album front to back. A little bit at a time is perfect. IE, about 2-3 tracks.
Is there a more successful UK band in the UK outside of The Beatles? Go ahead, I'll wait. The record of Madness is amazing.
15 out of their first 17 singles went top 10 in the UK - 33 Top 40 hits all time.
All but one of their 13 studio albums went Top 20 (9 Top 10's, 6 Top 5), and their latest release in 2023 was their first #1. WTF?
This would be the 4th and last of what most would call their classic records with \"silly fun songs\". Some classic songs, but mixed in with a lot of songs that probably came from cranking out 4 albums in 4 years and initially trying a \"concept\" album. The boys grew up.
Look, I've had to sit through a lot worse on this list in the few months I've been going through it.
Since listening to radio in the early 70's I feel like I've had this and other folky stuff forced onto me like it's the bestus thing ever. Nope. Still not a fan.
Hmm just couldn't love it. I know in the past I have dived into Tom and enjoyed it - but looking at his albums now I can't think which ones or recognise anything really. Odd.
Keep working on it fellas. I think you could do ok with some more practice.
Very good. Great to listen to something like this having never dived into them before.
Soul and funky Davie Bowie is my favourite David Bowie.
Love the fact that something like this was the best selling album in 1973. Never heard of the band, know the songs, too much funk is barely enough.
Good stuff. But not for me.
... and to the Cubs winning the World Series !!
This kind of Country Music is the reason I don't like Country Music.
Crazy time. Much respect. Not really for me but still appreciate it.
Southern White Hillbilly 70's Rock wasn't my thing at the time, and certainly not now.
Kinda like Tom Waites, but without the talent.
Mudhoney just never been my thing for whatever reason.
Not my favourite rap / hip-hop album or artist but I respect the shit out of them. Probably remember this more for saving Adidas than anything else. First time proper listen in years.
Probably 3-4 stars for the opening track and the albums to come. But two for this album.
Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Better than most Folky stuff "popular" at the time. Sneaks in 3 stars.
Genuinely enjoyed this and #finally exploring this band a bit more.
3 for the album when it was released but 4 for what the songs became over time.
Really wanted to like this.
There is a reason you have heard of Human League, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, David Bowie, Heaven 17, Depeche Mode, ABC, XTC, Thompson Twins, Flock of Seagulls, OMD, Ultravox, Erasure, etc etc - and NEVER heard of these guys.
Remember the good ol days when people just collected CD's to look part of the Cool Club and bands didn't have to depend on people actually listening to their music to make money? I give you Exhibit A.
TVOTR been one of my favourite finds in this album thing.
Musics worst crime on itself - the 80 minute CD.
These guys need an editor / producer who can say NO.
Actually, 80 mins had nothing to do with it. I was well bored before then.
Which is weird, because I have heard Wilco before an enjoyed them.
First time really listening to Ryan I think.
Band reminds me a lot of Belle and Sebastian. Could do worse. A think a little bit goes a long way but I liked it.
Seriously, kill me now. Can I vote 0?
Honestly thought I would be giving this a 4.
A 3.5 if I could, but not a 4.
I have no idea how this scraped in a 2 - probably Emmylou.
Another album I have never really put on to listen to. But excellent to hear a bit more of Motorhead.
Clearly didn't click with me today. Thought it might, but no. Initially I was going to give it a 2 but the more I listened...
Never a big OMD fan. Listening to this a couple of times didn't change that.
These are not love songs...
So close to a 1 but I could hear the B52's and Talking Heads in there so...
Sounded so familiar of the 70's rock on the radio growing up. In a good way for a change...
Nice. Very groovy, man. Appreciating the jazz today.
Delivered on the promise.
Scream mumble and distort the lyrics. Take some old RHCP funk and slam it in behind. Turn your K around. Voila - instant wank noise for skater bois looking for something noisier.
Oh so you invented British folk-rock. Well at least I know who to slap now.
Sadly, Graceland will appear higher on this list, I have no doubt.
Been ages since I have heard this album.
Has there ever been a time in the last 50 years where someone hasn't said "Still feels appropriate today"?
Bit sad that really. Great piece of work.
I feel like her first couple of albums were not just more important, but better...
While I liked this album I think he gets way too complicated in later stuff.
Started really hopeful with some 70's funky sound. But quickly degenerated into some dull MOR songs Kool and the Gang rejected.
After the dull Thundercat, the Real Thing steps up.
Bob meets Lenny meets Billy
Stay angry. Especially when people are shooting at you.
Surprised (well, no, not really) how little I liked this
Important because it was a mediocre 82 New Wave album or it launched Nick Haywards haircut onto us? Either way...
Enjoyed it. Was fun exploring her other songs too.
You all know the rants against it. But two points for Al.
Usually not my thing but there guys did it best. Some great tracks here.
He is growing on me slowly....
Thought this was going to be a slam dunk 3, mebbee a 4. Caught me on an off day?
Punk done dumb. Not my thing.
Even the KISS cover is lazy AF.
Was initially excited to listen to a bit of CCR. But ultimately Proud Mary did it for me, not much else nowadays.
This album always makes me smile
I think I will always favour Boy With The Arab Strap (5*) but they had to go here first.
Gotta say as an overall piece, I was a left a little "meh". Surprised me. In a not great way.
Solid collection of some great songs. Still stands out.
Really wanted to like this more.
Before Absolute Beginners there was Absolute Rubbish (sans Jean Genie).
No wonder he killed off Ziggy months after this came out.
Very nice Black Flag cover band...
Gotta respect your elders. Really enjoyed getting into this and other stuff from them.
Again, because I'm in a good mood today.
Jingly Jangly Pop. What's not to love?
Took me a while to work out less than half the album is on Apple Music but even less to work out I didn't really care. Heard it all before.
Kinda forget how good / fresh these guys were for a brief moment.
Same, sure, but different enough.
Caught me on a good day I think...
Who doesn't love a good 60 second punk song. Bless em.
Nope. Still think it's complete shite.
What's the modern equivalent of everyone buying an album to put in their CD collection to look cool in case friends came over, but never actually listen to the thing.
Radiohead hate streaming. But probably love vinyl collectors too.
More or less missed the whole Arcade Fire thing but everytime I sample a bit I enjoy it for what it is.
New artist to me. Big fan.
Wasn't a huge fan of this album (Music and American Pie are terrible), but tracks like Don't Tell Me save it for me. 2.5, rounded up.
I had actually been in to Dire Straits / Mark Knoffler a bit before this came out, hence the pop sound of this made it a very different album. And also made it very hard for Dire Straits to be Dire Straits later on.
I quickly liked it a lot - Walk of Life was my song to blast while I walked home from the bus after school. Latest Trick, Why Worry, Ride Across, Man Too Strong - were all kinda classic Dire Straits. My early fav was the title track which the world discovered later.
And of course the video that changed everything.
Significant? I guess. Not for me today.
I SO wanted to give this two stars, but dammit, Vincent.
It's like The Wonder Stuff tried to make a pretty decent Coldplay album
