Difficult to rate.
On the other hand it's incredibly played. The rhythm section is otherworldly in their groove and elevates every song.
But the album also lacked that one song that takes you by surprise. It is rock solid rock and roll from start to finish and I might be weird holding that against it.
This leaves me right between a 4 and a 5. Struggling.
What pushes me to round it up, is the production. I never realized before that THIS is the sound of rock and roll for me. Massive guitars, natural and roomy drums, bass holding the low end down. It just works and has not aged a day.
Might just be that I'm on a good mood today, but this will the first 5 I'll give out. Well deserved.
Bloated and boring. Not my thing.
I hope this was made as a joke, because it gets its stars purely because it made me laugh.
Vocals drag this down and the sequencing of the tracks could be better. Really enjoyed some of the background instrumentation.
Smooth but lacked that one "aha" moment for me
2112 overshadows the second half of the album.
What an incredible journey through creatively crafted soundscapes. One of the best ambient records that I've heard in some time.
Started slow but got better as it went along.
Impressive as a show of musicianship, but the music itself left me rather cold.
Now I know where all the blues lawyers get their three licks from
Tuning should not be optional
Some good moments of ambience and angst, but the songs drag on with no development or interest.
Great first half, but then forgets to be interesting for the rest of it. Wish I could give a 3.5 stars.
They didn't care while making it.
I didn't care while listening to it.
Fair play all around.
I had no idea what to expect from a queen album with none of the big hits, but I was positively surprised.
Favorite song:
The march of the black queen
Overproduced, under-performed, unoriginal.
vocals and lyrics pull this one down a notch, but otherwise enjoyable. Odd choice for the opening track.
What a positive surprise.
Band's on point and James Browns vocals characterful.
The mix has surprising depth for a live recording from this era and for a moment I thought I had accidentally put on a remaster of some sort.
I personally don't mind the loud audience noise like some seem to do. For me it adds to the vibe of the album, but I can definitely understand if others find it grating.
On the negative side, "Lost Someone" drags as it takes a whole third of the album and moves directly on to "Please Please Please" that's way too close in tempo and vibe. Maybe one of the instrumental bridges could have been moved after "Lost Someone" to get the palate cleansed a little. Feels like the end of the set struggles to get the same energy from there that the first half had.
Torn between a 3 and a 4.
On the other hand this band has some songs that I absolutely love, on the other, I didn't feel this as an album.
I'll round up as the synth work is good and the vocals lovely.
I smiled all the way through the album.
I didn't like it, but it was so weird I'd be willing to listen to it again. Not a fan of the male vocals.
Oh just fuck off
...some nice songs and soundscapes
While the vocals are slightly middling the music makes up for it. This album is also excellently sequenced, it flows beautifully from start to finish.
Competent but the deeper meaning eluded me
Very difficult to rate as the genre as a whole is not my jam. The lack of musical development during most of the tracks gets boring to me and the albums runtime does not help. Reminds me of ps1/ps2 skateboarding games (positive)
Beats are good though and I can see the vision but had to take a star off for Ragga Jam.
Fav song: Caroline
This is not the kind of list this should be on
Didn't really move me one way or another. Probably difficult to judge through a modern lens
It took full 14 minutes before Lars started to annoy me, good for him.
The absolute horrendous autotune/choppy editing on Hetfields vocals makes matters even worse and takes me fully out of the "live" experience.
There are moments when I'm not sure if the band and the orchestra are playing the same song. Odd chordal choices. I am pleased that the orchestra is not buried in the mix like it too often is in "symphonic metal" and in some songs it works really well. The whole setlist could benefit from being cut in half.
Most of the songs at their core are still solid (but occasionally bloated) and almost everyone in the band plays well, but I found the overall experience grating. Why ever listen to this and not an better Metallica album?
Jasons backing vocals are great.
2.5/5
Somewhere between 3 and a 4. Found some of the samples grating, but the overall groove was very enjoyable.
Perfection of its genre. I would not change a thing.
Proof that concept albums don't need to be 2:10:36 long wankfests.
Not bad, but boring and forgettable
Yet to reach its fullest potential
There were moments of greatness, but the album as a whole did not hit.
Didn't really move me one way or another, but was a pleasant morning listen
pleasant, but not that special.
Beats were groovy and flow good, but the lyrics drag this down for me.
Would make an ok instrumental
Occationally got dangerously close to having an atmosphere.
The title should be "Badly drawn out boy"
There's nothing wrong with this for what it is, but I could not for the life of me figure out why it is on the list.
Groovy, but some songs feel like mindless jams with no meaningful development. 3.5
little one note, but enjoyable
Liked the latter half quite a bit
Very British, very punk. Not bad, but without the brit-bias this would not have made the list.
Sounds like everyone is playing with gut problems and is afraid to fully let go, but that danger of someone shitting their pants is what this album desperately needs.
Now I know there is probably a sca band out there that I like, but it needs to be less reserved than this.
So smooth it slides off my smooth brain
Nostalgic so I probably won't be objective. The first half of the album is good, but the latter drags.
I've been known to like the occasional musical, but this just isn't my thing. Bloated, out of tune and boring.
If this was more condensed and some of the lyrics changed this would be an easy five.
Not every brit punk record that you listened when you were fourteen deserves a spot on this list
Polished, but unremarkable.
I dislike the vocals, but musically there are a lot of good things here. Sadly it is yet another bloated double album and my religion forbids those from receiving a good scores.
Charismatic and French.
Cheered up my morning quite nicely.
I just can't get into 90's hiphop at all.
Started off interesting, but then became monotone and boring.
Finally a hiphop album that clicks with me.
Smooth, pleasing, but lacks something. As an album it's horribly frontloaded.
They are clearly ahead of their time here, but it just didn't move me emotionally at all.
Very good once it gets going. Unpolished.
I was dissapointed that an album with a 5/5 song or two could be this mid.
Pleasant, butoccationally too cheesy.
Björk elevates some songs with her incredible singing, but when the dude is mumbling over the top of it all, it devolves to the Icelandic b-52's. Shit but with a different accent.
Finally this band really clicked with me. Raw aggression, clear message it conveys and the charming lack of good lyrics just hits the spot.
After hit filled start the album sadly has some filler in the mid section and the songs slightly blend to one another, but it picks back up towards the end and delivers some of it's best songs in the the last third of the record.
In a list that desperately lacks non UK/USA bands, this was a welcomed addition.
Charming combination of folk influences that occasionally crosses over to almost religious.
feels like I don't get it
Fails to reach the height of it's opener for the rest of it's runtime.
The second half is perfection
