While it has a very unique dark/meloncohlic sound with some great use of synths and many basslines being the standouts from an instrumental standpoint, it just gets too samey in a lot of areas to become memorable as a whole. His voice is certainly good, but just comes off as too overdramatic the more I listen to it, it certainly works in some songs but in others it just reminds me of a high school theater kid taking his lines too seriously. Songs also often overstay their welcome, with not much happening in these 7+ minutes that they end up in. Standouts would be Pictures of You, Disintegration, and Love song. Lyrically it's creative, but not much I could relate to personally. No song is outright "bad" though. 6/10
One of the classics for thrash metal, but unfortunately this is just a genre I can only enjoy if I'm really in the mood for it. There's obviously a lot of impressive technical display here across everything... drumming, guitars (THAT SOLO IN DYERS EVE), vocals.... All top notch, but I've always been one to prefer more melodic songs and variety when it comes to instrumention, which isn't really the point of this genre to be fair, so I could probably give this a 3.5-4/5. Fav songs are the title track, Frayed Ends, and Dyers Eve
Pretty solid straight forward rock. Could easily throw this on in the background and almost anyone could enjoy it, which is great, but it doesn't lead to many songs that super memorable. There are standouts for sure like Slide Away, Live Forever, and Supersonic, but overall it switch things up enough to really sink its teeth in. Vocals fit the music well, but aren't much of a standout. 3/5
Given this was an album compromised entirely of covers it was nowhere near bad at all, but I've never been into music from the 60's all that much and for most of these songs, if I did like them, I preferred listening to the originals
This is the first time I've listened to one of his albums all the way through instead of just the singles, and honestly didn't find much to go back to outside of a handful of tracks. Obviously Eminem is incredibly influential and deserves a lot of the success he's gotten, but there just isn't much material here that justifies it being over an hour long. But again maybe it's just not my cup of tea. Standouts are Stan, The Way I Am, and Drug Ballad.
So I've never really had many Beatles songs click with me, and this whole album was no exception. I get how they're incredibly influential, and there's ideas here that are great, but none of it is executed in a way that's either too memorable or enjoyable to listen to. Most of the time it's background noise, and other times it's just a slog to get through. Revolution 9 was particularly bad. I get wanting to experiment but what the actual hell was that?? Anyways, just because they were the first to introduce these sounds doesn't mean they were the best to do it. Standouts include Dear Prudence, Yer Blues, Good Night. 2/5
"Must Hear Album" my ass...
This was the most painfully British shit I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. I want my 50 minutes back.
Awful bars, awful flow, such a nothingburger of a "story", mostly boring instrumentals but some of the strings were nice. Standouts: N/A.
0/5
I can't fault the instrumentals for being all that bad, but that voice was nails on a chalkboard to me personally. Not my style at all
I really liked some of their hits like "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Baba O'Riley", so I was actually looking forward to this, but wow, I was so bored throughout this. For what's apparently regarded as an essential rock album, this really has no bite to it at all. It's just okay to have on in the background and that's about it. Starting to think this early rock from the 60's just isn't for me.
Wow I was really excited to hear this album as a whole since I love Paint It Black, but that ol' 60's rock strikes again.... Now there's no particularly bad songs here, but once again the vast majority of it is just background noise that just isn't memorable at all. I'm sure at the time it was probably newer and exciting, but by today's standards it's just meh...
The singles really do stand out above the rest of the songs here by a large margin, but that's not to say the deep cuts weren't enjoyable either. It was my first time hearing them and enjoyed them for the most part so I'll for sure be returning to this. Really crisp production, amazing vocals, catchy hooks... There's just a charisma to it that is hard to beat. 4/5
All killer no filler. 8 songs spanning 40 min that just never let up. Solid lyrics, impressive technical display across the board. Everyone is in their element here and it shows. This is a band in their prime, and as for me, if I'm in the mood for metal, this is a 5/5. I can't say this is something that'll appeal to everyone though, but for even casual fans of the genre, this is a great time. Standouts are Invaders, the title track, and Run to the Hills.
A couple of standouts on here. The band itself is in point and there's a lot of catchiness to be had there, but wow I swear he was going out of his way to make his vocal delivery as annoying as possible on alot of these tracks. I don't mind a wackier vocalist, but his voice and the instrumentals just don't lend themselves to that style at all
It's an album that gets far better in the second half. Some really good grooves /jam sessions pop up in some of the longer cuts like in the last 2 tracks and that's when I think this album is at it's best. The vocals are really nothing to write home about, and I think the songs could maybe benefit from clearer and more expressive singing, but at the same time it kinda fits the shoegaze/dreamy vibe the instrumentals have so I'm a bit conflicted on it... Overall though I enjoyed this, but it's not something I find myself craving to go back to. 3/5
Quick note while listening, the piano on the title track started out good, then just turned into something so unpleasant to listen to, like a a kid got his hands on a piano for the first time and just started randomly smashing all the keys... Besides that, so far so good.
Someone else mentioned this just sounding like bland/soulless R&B made in a factory, and for the most part, yeah they're right. Obviously her vocals are good, she's talented in that regard, but the songs themselves have no staying power whatsoever. Just boring bassy instrumentals and nothing to hook you in. Was surprised at how much I disliked this. 1/5
A pretty fun jazzy album that was more vaired in sound than I was expecting. Some of the instrumental tracks really reminded me of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack which I loved. The more laid back tracks were the best ones here even though there was less than I was expecting. The female vocals that popped up every now and then were a nice treat, and there weren't any outright terrible moments besides the "A Gospel" track where he decided to rap in an awful way for some reason. Still a good time though, 3/5
Mostly forgettable and too repetitive synth pop. The only string of tracks I truly enjoyed was Mirror, Walk, and Sweet Dreams (even though I'm kinda sick of this song with how much it's been overplayed). The rest isn't awful, but just nothing that sticks out. 2/5
I'm giving this points for the obviously great musicianship alone and influence he has had on the genre and music as a whole, but this older/more traditional jazz is just something that I don't find myself personally resonating with all that much, plus the fact that this is a live recording isn't ideal either as it doesn't sound too clear. 3/5
I actually didn't expect to like this as much as I did. I mean it's still basically fast food in music form since no one is listening to this expecting any kind of meaningful lyrics, but the production holds up incredibly well and many songs are just so smooth and catchy, it's hard not to like it. There's a lot of charm here and that's worth a 3/5 alone
I'll give points to the instrumentals cause I'll always be a fan of synths, and especially in this album they give off a cool spooky vibe, but wow those vocals completely ruined it for me. Usually I can look past bad vocals if the rest of the music makes up for it but not in this case unfortunately...
I haven't given U2 much attention before besides their hits, but this was a pretty good listen. It definitely got repetitive in a few places but not bad at all. 3/5
I'm honestly curious how the first track on this is far and away the most streamed one as there's so many other tracks that blow it out of the water. Either way, I really really enjoyed this. It's got amazing production and soundscape, like they really know how to do atmosphere. On top of that, it feels grandiose in certain places which isn't suprising considering they apparently had a large backing orchestra and choir in the studio. There are of course moments here that do feel like a miss though... "The Individual" for example just sounds grating to the ears so I'm not really sure what they were trying there. It's clearly an ambient transition track so idk why they drug it out for 4 whole minutes... Overall though it was an amazing experience and I'll definitely be checking out their other albums
That was pretty forgettable to be honest. Outside of the singles (besides EBYT which I still find creepy af) there just wasn't much here hooking me in. Mother was an especially weird track that I don't understand how they ever thought that sounded good. 2/5
I'll give it some points for some neat experimenation and instrumentals, but the songs just feel too all over the place, and her voice is just too out there for me personally to actually enjoy it. 2/5
I'm obviously not the target audience for this, and am not familiar with this genre in the slightest, so I feel like because of that I can't really rate it properly as I'm sure this resonates much more for people within that culture. However if I were go go off of my impressions alone, I did quite enjoy much of the instrumentals for this. There was lots of cool work with the drums along with some synths and guitar sprinkled in. And the soundstage was great too as I felt like I was in the room with them. However the vocals just weren't it for me at all and I can't see myself returning to any of these songs as a result. Again I'm sure this resonates a lot more with people who speak the language and are in that culture, but I just couldn't get into it. 2/5
I'm honestly a pretty big fan of RHCP, but I've always found this album to be one of their weaker ones. There's some major highlights here for sure, but there's a lot more misses than I'd like. 3/5
Besides a slightly weaker second half, this was a pretty consistently great album overall. Not as many obvious earworms compared to Thriller, but still very catchy and not much to complain about. Some slow moments drug on for a bit too long but that's about it. 4/5
I don't mind music that's more on the experimental side but you gotta make it somewhat engaging to listen to at the very least. I just found myself forgetting these songs as soon as they ended, and not to mention his vocals just did nothing for me either. It had its moments here and there but it just wasn't it. Still not a 1 though cause I'd rather listen to this any day of the week than some of the other albums from this list that I've listened to. 2/5
Pretty solid and straightforward 90's rock. Nothing too crazy or super memorable but still an enjoyable listen. I just wish certain songs were longer as there's way too many tracks that end after on a minute or 2. 3/5
As someone else mentioned, the big problem with this list is that they're throwing in albums that barely had time to age, and while some of them stand the test of time, this one for sure didn't. If you're looking for this kind of sound, just check out Massive Attack instead. 2/5
Some solid rock bangers in here. Definitely has a distinct sound that feels timeless in it's own way which I enjoyed. Obviously great vocals and performances across the board but there are too many misses on the individual song level for me to give this any higher than a 3/5
I feel bad giving this such a low rating, but at the same time I like other Bowie songs and albums and since he experiments so much, I'm not surprised that there's bound to be a few albums that just don't click for me. I can't see a single song here that I want to revisit, but at the same time none of them are outright unlistenable so that warrants at least a 2/5.
Kinda cool to finally know where that White Rabbit song comes from. I can't say I'm a fan of that song in particular, maybe just cause I associate it as cliche hippy music, but I can't deny both its own impact, and the impact of this album as a whole on the psych rock sound. As for my own thoughts, it was more hit or miss and I only saved a handful of tracks, but still an overall enjoyable listen and not much to really hate. Also very interesting to see how this band evolved over the years. I had no idea about the whole Jefferson Airplane -> Jefferson Starship -> Starship thing. 3/5
I'm sure at the time this sound felt new and exciting but by today's standards this just felt boring. Especially in the production as it felt like a one trick pony the whole time. No interesting samples or variability, and forgettable vocals and bars. Still not unlistenable though. 2/5
Pretty decent folksy sounding soft rock. Good uses of harmonized vocals, flutes, and acoustic guitars, plus I always like music that tells a story. But overall I can't think of why this is considered a must hear album as it didn't really do anything that truly makes it stand out. 3/5
This was surprisingly enjoyable to me! I can't say I'm gonna add any of these songs to my main playlist as this is more of a vibe I'd only go for if I'm purely looking to have pleasant background noise, but otherwise it was really engaging despite it being just piano. Not to mention this all being improvised is wild to me. To come up with all of this just on the fly is really a testament to the talent on display here and honestly deservong of this list. 4/5
It gets points for being one of the pioneers in the whole pop rock/power pop sound, and it certainly has the energy, but this is just another example for me that just confirms the notion of "just because you were the first doesn't mean you're the best". I can just think of more modern bands that take inspiration from the best parts of this and do it way better. Still though, it's enjoyable enough. 3/5
Didn't really like this as much as I was expecting. Honestly the slower/ more ballad type songs like Golden Lady are where I gravitated the most. The more 'funk' heavy a song was, the more I didn't like it too much as I don't feel the production aged all that well.
Still can't say it was terrible though, 3/5
A pretty damn fun album with lots of energy and cheesy charm. A good bit of variety too and it was cool to hear parts of songs that I've heard sampled in modern hip hop. The were definitely some misses in here too though that I enjoyed enough in the context of the album, but didn't go back to all that much. Also my excitement at hearing that sample in the last song that I originally heard in the Soldier Boy song can not be understated lol. 3/5
Yeah this was sure a chore to get through. Just nothing interesting going on at all, and the singing is barely singing at all, which doesn't help. 1.5/5 because it's not as bad as others in this list.
A pretty fun time. I didn't like everything here, especially the more zaney tracks, but it was produced in a really satisfying way with good soundstage and diversity among all the songs so I'll be coming back to a few of these for sure.
When it comes to the Shoegaze genre, I really need to be in the right mood to enjoy it, and even then I can only stand so much of it. This is no exception. It's definitely pretty to listen to and l mostly like the vocals, but the issue is that it all just sounds the same, and that's made worse but some production choices that feel like the cranked up the treble by a bunch, creating a sound that just hurts the ears after awhile. Still a decent listen though and it gets points for being one of the firsts in the genre. 3/5
Screw all the pretentious snobs on this site, this album is one of the easiest fives I've ever given not only cause it holds up extremely well, but cause it is one of the few examples I can think of where one of the first bands in a certain genre still outdoes the countless newer bands in the genre. The production is punchy, the chemistry of the band is second to none, especially between Mike and Chester, and it's lyrics, while definitely angsty teen sounding in certain places, are still amazing and it's no wonder it still resonates with millions of people 26 years later. This is not only one of the best debut albums of all time, but one of the best albums period. 5/5
This was okay, but had a lot of forgettable tracks. Nothing too interesting either, just run of the mills 80's rock but completely lacking of any memorable hooks on any songs. The vocals aren't all that special either. 2/5
This makes me very grateful that music has evolved greatly since this came out. An absolute slog to get through, idk how this is considered one of the greats cause it sure isn't, 1/5
The first song had me really excited to hear the rest of this but unfortunately it was pretty hit and (mostly) miss from there. Nothing was outright terrible though. 3/5
Didn't know what to expect and surprisingly enjoyed this one! The drums are definitely the start of the show here, super energetic and complex which kept me engaged the whole way through. Even though this is something I'd probably only go back to if I'm looking for this very specific sound (and since these are all 10min tracks which is a lot to commit to) I still really liked it and thought it was a cool new sound to get exposed to. 4/5
A very enjoyable listen. Really solid production that almost felt lo-fi so it was pleasing to the ears. Lyrical wise nothing stood out too much but it wasn't bad either. Some of the samples used were great choices as well like the Marvin Gaye sample in 'Love is...'. Definitely a stronger album in the 2nd half though. 3/5
Yeah this just wasn't my style, at all. 1/5
I feel bad for giving this such a low score cause I know that Bob Marley is iconic, but I have never liked Reggae as a genre and this didn't convince me otherwise either. 2/5
Wow this one caught me by surprise! Such a fun and over the top concept album. Super clean production and vaired instrumentation that has that big band feel but it's subdued enough where it doesn't get exhausting to listen to. While I definitely prefer to first half over then second, this is still something I'd go back to as a whole quite often. 4/5
I've never been too into Queen and this album didn't change that either. It wasn't bad but I've always thought they've been more of a singles band, and tbf this album did show that they had decent deep cuts since the big single off this album (Killer Queen) is one of my least favs. Still though, not bad and enjoyable/energetic enough to listen to, but nothing too memorable 3/5.
An amazing space rock album that I never fully listened to until now. Obviously the singles from this are iconic and still the best songs on the album, but that by no means implies that the rest is forgettable. Outside of Soldiers poem and invincible which are kinda boring, the album doesn't let up with the amazing vocals, varied and unique instrumentals, and cool themes throughout. 4/5
This was mostly just background noise for the first half, nothing terrible, but all just mid-tempo low energy 70s soft rock that didn't do anything too interesting. The second half definitely picked up the energy though and the bigger emphasis on the group backing vocals helped too. 3/5
Pure 80's cheese in the best way possible. Super over the top and varied across almost the whole run time. Such great energy too which is needed because if they weren't 1000% committed then this wouldn't work nearly as well. A couple misses in here but that's expected with how much they experiment. 4/5
While this for sure had gorgeous instrumentation, especially the strings, it did meander along a bit too much for me. While I might come back to the album as a whole if I'm really in the mood for it, I can't find myself coming back to the individual songs that much. The vocals left a lot to be desired too, and maybe part of that is just due to the different language that made it harder to connect with. 3/5
Much like someone else said, the other songs on here besides the hits just sound like less good clones of those hits, which I kinda true. While I liked some of those deeper cuts, the sound definitely got old once I was halfway through. Still something I'd totally be fine to listen to again, but nothing that sticks with you all that much. Still though it's hard to hate too much, so 3/5 for me.
There's songs that I love by Neil Young, but man this album really was boring. Not really anything memorable outside of 2 songs, and even then those weren't anywhere close to his best. I can't say this really gave me beach vibes either. 2/5
Instrumentals are pretty cool but wow that voice ruins it for me unfortunately. 2/5
Pretty cool production and soundscape that unfortunately didn't lead to actual songs that were all that memorable. Only one song I would really go back to here. 2/5
I just couldn't get into this at all, 1/5
Nothing outright terrible but I never clicked with anything by The Beatles or any of it's members' solo projects. Just a bunch of ballads without any kind of hook to them whatsoever. 2/5
Some really clean production that definitely makes parts of this an "audiophile" album, but that production also needs to come paired with interesting songs too, to which this really doesn't. Just a lot of slow and mid tempo tracks with a boring vocalist. 2/5
This felt like a collection of demos/unfinished ideas more than an actual album. Which is a shame since I think there was a good amount of potentially cool ideas here but none of them got fleshed out or polished enough to become memorable. 2/5
Overall a dated sound and not all that memorable outside of one song really, still not unlistenable though and would be content just having it be background noise. 2/5
Honestly a pretty solid listen. Great vocals and just enough variation in the instrumentals to keep it interesting. Also produced in a way that just feels warm/calming to listen to. The middle of the album is definitely the best but overall nothing on here that's bad. All decent to good.
It feels odd to rate this a 3 only because of how influential and large of a part of music history Miles Davis is, but I honestly don't think that pure jazz is for me. I absolutely love certain elements of jazz and think its an amazing ingredient when used in other genres, but never really gravitate to it on its own because it just sounds like elevator music, and this album is no exception. But it's really not bad in the slightest, just not memorable. 3/5
