1001 Albums Summary

Liked this way more than I thought I would! I've never listened to much Honky Tonk but it's pretty nice. Interesting knowing all of the influences, especially the pseudo-Hawaiian, pacific island orientalist tropical type of sound. Plays really well of off Lynn's sometimes playful, sometimes sexy, all the time powerful voice. Interesting!

I think it's just too torn between experimental and just 80s pop to me. The grounded moments suck for me and the moments that push really hard just feel questionable. Worst of all the production is pretty poopy. Those stock keyboard sounds just grind my gears idk

This type of just fucking around is so awesome. The last song and the Thai song do venture into the too far territory for me but isn't that point

I generally prefer his ambient stuff and I find that true here. Still very good.

"Ultimately just terribly boring to me. The ""plastic"" part of plastic soul really shines through. It feels very disingenuous. Love Bowie, love his voice, style, etc., hate this. The butchering of Across the Universe feels like the defining moment. Just flippant, a sorta cocaine fueled shrug. Fame is the best song for me, and I've got really big issues with it. Terrible ending, some studio tricks that feel heartless to me. David Bowie plays best when he's got an edge. I think the edge he's going for here is that he's friends with black people, which I know in 1975 means something more but to me right now it feels just very shallow. I would much rather listen to the music he's pulling from. I will say I appreciate that it's a collaboration, especially with relatively unknown musicians, given the history of white artists showing up and wholesale stealing black music. It still does very very little for me."

First half was such a bore. When they got into the dancey stuff I had a lot of fun.

First of all shockingly long. There's some good points but it's just soooo long that eventually the mid stuff becomes grating and really drags it down. There should be French Horn through the whole thing. The Nick Drake/Harry Nilsson comp is so unearned IMO

Perfect album. Grew up listening and they're from MSP so obviously a bias for me but still

I quite liked it it fit the vibe of the day very well
